13 Reasons Why: Does It Glorify Suicide?

13 Reasons Why is a breakout hit for Netflix. The streaming network never goes public with download numbers for its programs, but it came out last week that the drama has been the most Tweeted-about series of 2017. In this day and age, there’s nearly no better metric with which to measure success. But 13 Reasons Why has been making headlines ever since its March 31 release for reasons aside from hashtags and social media mentions. The series has raised numerous red flags for mental health experts, many of whom believe it sends a potentially dangerous message about teenage suicide. In short, the show centers around a high school student named Hannah. We find out almost immediately that she’s killed herself, although she still narrates the entire first season because Hannah recorded 13 tapes prior to slitting her wrists, each of which calls out certain individuals at her high school for how they treated her. And, therefore, how each contributed to her decision to take her own life. The drama (co-produced by Selena Gomez ) is meant to leave a strong impact on its viewers, touching on such topics as bullying, sexual assault and underage drinking. Netflix makes it clear, via a special message, at the outset of various episodes that the upcoming content is graphic and mature in nature. But this isn’t enough for some institutions and some doctors. A handful of middle schools and high schools have sent letters home, urging parents to not allow their children to watch 13 Reasons Why without adult supervision. “Suicide is a tough issue to talk about,” says Dr. Christina Conolly, who works for Maryland’s Montgomery County School District, where she helped write a letter that states “adolescents watching without an adult … could be at increased risk of self-harm.” Dr. Conolly doesn’t necessarily call out 13 Reasons Why for any of its storylines, simply saying in general: “Watching a suicide or knowing someone who has died by suicide can lead others to completing a suicide themselves.” The National Association of School Psychologists agrees, declaring in its own statement: “We do not recommend that vulnerable youth, especially those who have any degree of suicidal ideation, watch this series.” More specifically, some in the professional field question why the show never really brings up the topic of mental health in general, while also finding fault with the way in which it paints suicide as a form of revenge. They also have a major problem with how a guidance counselor appears to blame Hannah for having been raped by a fellow student. It’s this conversation, Hannah herself says in one of her audio tapes, that serves as the final nail in her tragic coffin. In the upstate New York community of Grand Island, school administrators warned that the series “sensationalizes suicide.” Indiana’s largest school district warned in an email that the series “does not accurately model what we would want or hope individuals do if they are struggling or in crisis.” 13 Reasons Why is based on a 2007 novel by the same name. But the TV version takes many liberties, veering far off the original script at times and expanding on many developments and character arcs. Gomez, who has talked openly about her own emotional struggles over the years, said she was braced for a backlash upon agreeing to produce the drama. “It’s going to come no matter what. It’s not an easy subject to talk about. But I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing,” she has said. Brian Yorkey, who won a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize for the musical Next to Normal, was one of the main writers on 13 Reasons Why. He disagrees with the critics who think the show paints suicide in any sort of positive or glamorous light.  “Many people are accusing the show of glamorizing suicide and I feel strongly – and I think everyone who made the show – feel very strongly that we did the exact opposite,” he says, adding: What we did was portray suicide and we portrayed it as very ugly and very damaging.” View Slideshow: 21 Stars Who Committed Suicide According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, suicide is the second-leading cause of death among American teens between the ages of 15 to 19. It’s a real issue, one that those behind 13 Reasons Why say they have taken as seriously as possible. Asked about troubled teens and their possible response to what they see on screen, including a graphic depiction of Hannah killing herself, Gomez says: “They have to see something that’s going to shake them. This show is as real as it can possibly get.”

Demi Lovato Shills For Weight Loss Tea as Self Love, Fans Go Ham

Demi Lovato has become a body-positivity “champion” in recent years, and for good reason. The 24-year-old is a strong role model. Since announcing her struggles with eating disorders and mental health issues, she’s been renowned for her candor and message. So what’s the issue? Lovato is a spokeswoman for the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), and as a noted ED survivor herself, she fits the bill. Fans were shocked, however, after the singer posted a photo promoting “detox tea” and a vexing message on her vaunted Instagram. “This year is all about #selflove truly taking care of myself and exercising has changed everything for me,” she captioned the picture. “@teamiblends has #sponsored my 30 day detox challenge to help get rid of toxins and my bloating for summer,” adds Demi. “I’m on Day 7 right now and it’s so easy!” “I just drink their tea every single day in my favorite purple tumbler. I love taking it to shoots and the studio with me.” “If you are ready to be your best YOU this summer, use my Code: DEMI for 20% off your detox program when you check out!” “I want all of you to do the challenge!” The issue, if it wasn’t abundantly clear, is that “detox teas” are 1. fairly unhealthy and 2. usually touted as weight-loss products. In fairness, Lovato didn’t outright promote the tea for weight loss purposes, but the implication is such that fans were unhappy. Many believe that even such teas can be triggers for people with eating disorders, as they are often misused as laxatives or purgers. Moreover, the health community is divided on such drinks in general as it is believed that they can cause a myriad of problems. Needless to say, Lovato was quickly taken to task for irresponsible promotion by many of her 57 million Instagram followers. “How has detox tea something to do with self love and eating disorerrecovery?” @heidirecovering wrote in the comments.  “Self love is about accepting oneself, not detoxing. I used to look up to you, but this is the lowest point ever.” Fans called her out for pushing such a thing on people who view her as a role model thanks to her own struggles with bulimia. @thebalanced.babe wrote, “I love you Demi, but please.” “Ask yourself why would you advertise something so damaging to people struggling with EDs, disordered eating, and more.” “Impressionable young people to look up to you.” Others were less harsh, but still un-enthralled. “Please take this post down Demi, a laxative will NOT make me the best me,” urged another Lovatic, @selenamyqueef. The guise of “self-love” was what really left her army of followers steamed, and @chooselifewarrior, for one, took her to TASK on Snapchat: Look, obviously Demi is a very well-meaning girl. She’s built up a lot of credibility at this point, being open and honest about her body image issues and self-esteem struggles for years. Those Demi Lovato swimsuit pics she’s been flaunting lately are jaw-dropping, as is the incredible confidence level she’s shown. There isn’t anything wrong with wanting to change one’s body, or sharing your experiences with others who follow you on social media. Using questionable products to do so, however? Especially products potentially harmful for people with eating disorders – many of whom look up to Demi for exactly that reason? View Slideshow: Demi Lovato Instagram Pics Are the Hottest Thing in Human History The star and NEDA have yet to comment, but we expect some kind of response soon, given the current backlash against this plug.

Jill Duggar: Did She Just Reveal Her Unborn Baby’s Name?

It’s been four months since we first learned that Jill Duggar is pregnant with her second child , and while she’s not quite as tight-lipped about her expanding family as her sister, Jessa Duggar, Jill hasn’t offered fans many updates in recent weeks. Granted, part of the reason for that is the fact that she and her son and husband are currently back in South America performing missionary work, and Internet connections are reportedly hard to come by in their village. Even so, it seems that Jill is occasionally able to login and fill fans in on the status of her forthcoming bundle of joy. Jill posted a lengthy blog post to her family’s official website yesterday, and she ended with a surprising reveal. She started with the sad news that the grandfather of her husband, Derick Dillard, passed away last week. Jill thanked fans for their support and explained that while the Dillards are enduring a difficult time, there’s a good deal of joy on the horizon: “Although the past few days have brought sadness to our hearts, we’ve also had reason to celebrate, since Israel turned 2 years old just a few days ago!” Jill wrote. She went on to offer fans an insight into her pregnancy as she approaches her third trimester: “Little ‘Samuelito’ (as the locals call him) sometimes wakes mommy up at night now with his active kicking,” Jill wrote. “We look forward to returning home soon to prepare for the birth (before we can’t fly anymore!).” The “Samuelito” tidbit has been interpreted by some fans as Jill’s way of revealing that she’s planning on naming her baby Samuel. It’s a tad traditional for a Duggar baby name, but it’s in keeping with Jill and Derick’s habit of choosing names that reflect their faith. Their first child, Israel Dillard , was named in commemoration of of the Christian holy land and the country where Derick performed his earliest missionary work. It may seem like a casual way to make such a big reveal, but Jill isn’t as secretive as other members of her family. Plus, we suppose when you can only access the Internet once a week, you’re not as selective about what you share online. Watch Counting On online for more from the Dillard clan. Halle Berry Shares Rare Picture of Son: What a Cutie!

Halle Berry may not have starred in a hit movie in many years, but the actress is quickly becoming quite a big hit on the Internet. To close the month of March, for example, Berry treated her 1.3 million Instagram followers to a gorgeous  photo of herself without a bra on . “Me when someone says ‘I’m coming over and I’ve got snacks,'” Berry wrote as a caption to the photo down below, eliciting quite a few VERY positive reactions online. “Um @halleberry…I’m coming over and I’ve got snacks? #TheNewAllStateMantra,” wrote Questlove, for instance. Late last week, meanwhile, Berry made headlines for a social media snapshot of a very different kind. The former Oscar winner gave fans a rare glimpse at son Maceo Martinez, who was enjoying a positively radiant glimpse of the deep blue ocean himself. “When you find a pair of pj’s that rock your world,” the 50-years old star captioned the sweet image of the three-year-old dressed in rumpled white pajamas, peering out through a window. The peaceful picture was snapped from behind and does not show the boy’s face. Berry has always been extra careful to protect her kids from the limelight. She knows how dangerous fame can be for children. On the rare occasion that she does share photos of little Maceo or her nine-year-old daughter, Nahla Aubry, she makes sure to obscure their eyes, noses and mouth. We admire Berry for this strategy. But some idiots out there have actually criticized her for it. Last October, the actress clapped back at an Instagram troll who somehow took issue with Berry for cropping her kids’ faces out of a photo. “I’ve noticed you have said this several times now so let me be clear – I’m not at all ashamed of my children,” Berry was forced to write, adding: “I try to find creative ways to incorporate them into my feed because they are the biggest part of my life, but I also work very hard to keep their identities as private as I can considering they are only children.” Despite this being an obvious and admirable point of view, Berry continued. She concluded her reply to this online moron as follows: “It’s my belief, and I’m not criticizing others who have different beliefs, that it’s my job as their mother to protect their privacy as best I can. “When they grow and they’re of age and they want to share their images on the internet, that will be for them to decide, not me. Feel me? Have a beautiful day.” View Slideshow: Esquire’s Sexiest Women Alive: A Sizzling Summation Berry shares young Maceo with ex-husband Olivier Martinez and Nahla with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry. She was also previously married to former Major League Baseball outfielder David Justice and singer Eric Benet. Indeed, Berry hasn’t had the best of luck when it comes to men. But she has had the best of luck when it comes to her looks (see slideshow, above) and when it comes to producing precious children. Those are pretty important things, too.

Halle Berry and the Slutty Instagram Picture of the Day

Nothing reminds me how irrelevant titty blogs like this are – than seeing the other blogs like this post shit about Halle Berry’s slutty instagram pics – like she wasn’t 1000 fucking years old. The fact is, this is an old timer internet concept and the kids use the internet different, leaving us fucking impotent fucks who remember dial up – and bitches like Hallle Berry to have conversations about her tits. Halle Berry’s tits that were great in Y2k…are still tits, she’s still a white as fuck Hollywood brat who can spin her story into “blackness”…because of her skin color and her deadbeat dad being black….who she only met when she won the Oscar and he decided to collect. Josh Duggar Visits Noah’s Ark, Appears in Throwback Pic as Quiet PR Blitz Continues

Josh Duggar and wife Anna appeared a few times on the Duggar family Facebook page this week as they start to rebuild their media presence. As you can see above, the family made a pilgrimage to Ark Encounter, a Christian fundamentalist theme park in Grant County, Kentucky. If it wasn’t obvious, it features a Noah’s Ark replica. “Visiting the Ark Encounter is a great time the whole family can appreciate,” the Duggar family wrote on their official Facebook page. “Our family looked at the life of Noah and saw how the righteousness and obedience of one man’s life spared all of humanity.” They encouraged their fans to support the Ark’s website, and implicitly to support Josh, 29, as he begins this new phase of life. The inclusion of Josh Duggar in the above photo may not be an endorsement of his righteousness or obedience, but it speaks volumes. With Josh and Anna expecting their fifth child , the family is working the local pariah back into the fold gradually but very much deliberately. Josh’s sordid past aside, by and large, fans of Counting On have been very supportive of the inclusion of Josh and Anna in family life. One follower wrote, “Nice to see josh included in the picture. Beautiful picture. Thanks for sharing,” while another Duggar fan commented:  “It is nice to see Josh in the family photos again. We went to see the ark three weeks ago I hate we missed you we would love to meet you.” Yet another supporter remarked, “Love seeing the ENTIRE family together. So good to see Josh and Anna again … I love this family!” He remains a polarizing figure, but with such loving support from their core fans, the Duggars may no longer feel the need to hide Josh. At least not as obviously as they have in the past … View Slideshow: Josh Duggar: Scrubbed From Jinger’s Wedding with Reshoots, Fake Sun Glare, Kid in Front of Face TLC has used sun glare, re-shoots, creative editing and even small children as human shields to protect viewers from the human eyesore. Now that he’s having baby #5 though, social media sightings may increase and writers may give Anna Duggar a bigger role on Counting On . Josh’s molestation scandal and infidelity were the reason his family’s popular reality TV show 19 Kids and Counting was axed in 2015. Two years later, however, the reborn Counting On is chugging along, Anna somehow didn’t divorce him, and all seems right in Arkansas. Well, mostly. Jill and Jessa were radio silent on social media after his pregnancy announcement, which is highly unusual for the duo. But if the silence is deafening, this also says a lot: Michelle Duggar shared this baby picture of Josh, Jana Duggar and John-David Duggar – the inaugural trio of her 19 kids – from 1994. Josh was an innocent little boy once! Who knew! The quiet PR blitz is underway after Josh and Anna Duggar wrote on the family blog earlier this month that their fifth child is en route: “For nearly the last two years, we have quietly worked to save our marriage, focus on our children, and rebuild our lives together as a family.”  “Doing so is never easy after a breach of trust. We’ve learned that a life of faith and rebuilding a life together is simply done one day at a time.” “As we continue our journey as a family and rebuild our lives, we are delighted to share with you that we are expecting a new baby boy later this year.” “Beauty comes from ashes and we cannot wait to see and kiss the face of this sweet new boy!” Josh and Anna wrote in their announcement. Of course, he’s not entirely out of the woods yet. Josh is being sued by a photographer whose photo he used as his profile pic on Ashley Madison, the adultery-driven website he used. Matthew McCarthy claims that Josh’s wrongful, “extreme and outrageous” use of his image subjected him to lost work and epic harassment. While it’s dubious that the photographer/DJ is seeking damages, claiming he can’t get work because Josh did this, it still hangs over his head. Doesn’t seem like the family is too worried, in any case, based on how Josh is being treated in their carefully-crafted postings lately. Will fans ever truly accept him again, though?
