New Hampshire Voters Say College Costs, Unemployment Top Issues

‘It’s hard for graduates, not being able to pay their loans and find a job,’ one young voter tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Sway Calloway A young voter casts his ballot in the New Hampshire primary Photo: T.J. Kirkpatrick/ Getty Images MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — There were no excuses to skip Tuesday’s (January 10) primary in the Granite State. The weather was balmy for this time of year, there was no snow on the ground and the body-slamming back-and-forth between the Republican contenders was worthy of a backyard wrestling ring. But what brought out an expected record 250,000 voters for Tuesday’s contest? MTV’s Power of 12 hit the polls early and late in the day to ask young voters what was on their minds when they stepped up to be counted. Lifeguard and Special Olympics basketball coach (go, Manchester Mustangs!) Keating Tufts, 21, emerged from casting his vote just before dinnertime with college tuition on his mind. “We’re paying more for school every single year, the tuition keeps on going up … I feel like [I should] do my part and vote,” said the Southern New Hampshire University student who was not willing to fall in line and cast his lot with GOP front-runner Mitt Romney, instead opting for unconventional congressman Ron Paul. “He’s got a different view than normal candidates, so I feel like it would be interesting to see what he can do.” As high school English teacher Kelly Ilacqua, 25, emerged from the Carol M. Rines Health Center in Manchester’s Ward 3, she said she went with former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum because of her pro-life beliefs. “He is the author of the legislation that outlawed partial-birth abortion … and he’s also been a big proponent of two legislations that have stopped doctors in abortion clinics from ending the lives of abortion-surviving infants.” Earlier in the day, first-time voter Amelia Dickinson, 18, had several different motivations for voting. “Right now I’d have to say the economy and foreign policy … with [North Korea’s] Kim Jong-Il passing and everyone on edge about what’s going to happen next,” she said. “Obviously with the economy with how there’s so much unemployment, people are worried about inflation with the dollar. I think the next president really needs to have an understanding and know what to do with those two problems and really be willing to compromise with the two parties.” For another first-time voter, 18-year-old high school student Emily Flanders, it was not the economy but social issues including gay rights and abortion, while Andrew Judd, 19, said he was thinking a lot about foreign policy as well as who the eventual candidates are beholden to in getting to the big game. “Intellect in general, how smart the candidates are,” he said. “You want a smart president. Also, how people were financially backed. I don’t want somebody going to Washington with a lot of promises they have to fill.” Danielle Courtemanche, 23, was focused squarely on the same things so many millions of Americans are: unemployment. After meeting former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman several times at her job at the local Hilton Garden Inn hotel, Courtemanche said she felt that he understood her struggles and those of her peers and had the best plan to help them out. “As a graduate of 2011, I feel that it is very important for people my age to go out and vote. I feel like it’s a big problem,” she said of the difficulty new graduates are having finding jobs. “It’s hard for graduates with loans … not being able to pay their loans and to find a job.” Like many of the other voters MTV News has talked to in Iowa and New Hampshire, high school senior David Chester, 19, said the #1 issue is the economy. “[Definitely] the economy, which affects everyone,” he said. “I think one of the huge things that we need to acknowledge is that the financial crisis was due in large part to the financial sector, not the public sector, and a little regulation in Wall Street would not hurt to have a little responsibility there.” What issues are important to you as you get ready to hit the polls for your primary? Newt Gingrich Hammers "Timid" Mitt Romney in New Ad

Timid. That sums up Mitt Romney in one word, according to Newt Gingrich, who touts himself as a bold, conservative leader for America’s future in this new ad spot. Coming out hard after Romney derailed him in Iowa , where he once held a sizable edge, Newt calls Mitt’s economic plan “timid” and “virtually identical to Obama’s.” Newt Gingrich Attack Ad Gingrich, despite a disappointing fourth-place finish in the first Republican caucus of the primary season, is showing no signs he’ll drop out, at least for now. “Timid won’t create jobs, and timid certainly won’t defeat Barack Obama,” the narrator says, quickly delivering on Gingrich’s promise to draw a sharp contrast. “Newt Gingrich’s bold leadership balanced the budget, reformed welfare and helped create millions of new jobs. The Gingrich jobs plan is a powerful plan to grow our economy and create jobs, rebuilding the America we love with bold conservative leadership.” You buying it?

REVIEW: Ellen Barkin Snarls to Life in Ruthless, Unpleasant Another Happy Day

As a general rule in the movies, dysfunction is better offered as a side dish rather than a main course, accenting what’s really a story of grieving and letting go, or coming of age, or self-acceptance. Screaming, crying, acting out and mistreating others are tougher to take when they’re the primary focus instead of symptomatic of something deeper to be excavated and explored.

Brooke Mueller: Caught with a Crack Pipe?

So much for Brooke Mueller reportedly doing well . A picture has surfaced online that appears to depict Charlie Sheen’s troubled ex-wife in possession of a homemade crack pipe. See it for yourself at TMZ. No word yet from Mueller or her team, but sources say Brooke fled from the scene as quickly as possible once she saw the photographer. Mueller, who is the primary caretaker for the twins she shares with Sheen, has been in and out of rehab 15 times. Less than a month ago, she was found wandering the streets of Hawaii, cash in hand . The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, meanwhile, has not visited either Brooke or Charlie at any point in the last six months. It’s safe to say an appointment might have to be made now. [Photo: WENN.com]

Bloomberg’s Carlson Slams Christine O’Donnell as Brainless, But Gushed Over Primary Victories of Boxer and Feinstein in ’92

In a zinger that roused the indignation of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Bloomberg columnist Margaret Carlson cast Christine O’Donnell as Sarah Palin’s protege – but “with not a fully-functioning human brain.” But in 1992, Carlson gushed over the primary victories of current Sens. Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein. Does she hold a double-standard? Co-host Mika Brzezinski was taken aback when the panel had to discuss Carlson’s piece for The Daily Beast, “Watch Your Back, Sarah.” She silently mouthed the word “bitchy” to Carlson to describe the article, adding that it was “searing.” Carlson’s piece focuses on the emergence of the Republican Delaware Senate nominee as the next Sarah Palin protege, predicting a political catfight of sorts between the two female GOP stars. Carlson labeled O’Donnell an “obvious knockoff” of Palin, “hawking her wares on the shores of the Delaware.” Appearing on “Morning Joe” Wednesday, Carlson sneered that O’Donnell lacks a “fully-functioning human brain.” Of course, there was a time when she smiled upon the emergence of female Senate candidates. In 1992, Carlson hailed the primary victories of now California Sens. Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein, both Democrats and both liberal feminists. “There was a rush, an exultation that surpassed any political moment I have ever known – better even than Geraldine Ferraro’s vice-presidential candidacy,” she wrote. Eighteen years later, it’s conservative Republican women who are heating up the 2010 midterm season, and Carlson can’t do enough to bash them at every turn. A transcript of the segment, which aired on September 22 at 6:24 a.m. EDT, is as follows: MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Margaret wrote a searing piece on this woman called “Watch Your Back, Sarah.” And I’m sorry, it’s a little – JOE SCARBOROUGH: A little harsh? BRZEZINSKI: (Mouthing words) Bitchy. A little – I’m sorry. (…) MARGARET: This is how we get in trouble. BRZEZINSKI: I’m just saying – “rarr.” (Imitating cat noise) CARLSON: No, I was just suggesting that – BRZEZINSKI: You more than suggest. CARLSON: Christine O’Donnell is, you know, what the Republican Party’s been heading to for a long time. It’s – she’s post-Sarah Palin. And she’s got a fully – SCARBOROUGH: (Laughing) Post-modernist. (Crosstalk) CARLSON: With not a fully-functioning human brain. (Collective groan) WILLIE GEIST: That’s not fair. BRZEZINSKI: You go below the belt. CARLSON: This is where the elites will be getting out the e-mail now to me. But, you know, she’s not, she’s not ready for this. I think she’s more fluent than Sarah Palin, in that what she says comes out better and you can parse it. But she’s taken on – she’s taken on – she’s copying her act. I mean, already, you know, she’s putting on the glasses. She doesn’t need them except for cosmetic reasons.

GOP losing hope to take back congress, Tea Partys fault

With polls showing significant GOP momentum this fall, Republicans in recent weeks began to believe they had a real chance of retaking control of the Senate in November. But a major primary upset at the hands of a tea party insurgent on Tuesday may have put the Senate GOP's dreams of a majority at serious risk. In the biggest electoral surprise of the night, conservative activist Christine O'Donnell defeated longtime GOP Rep. Mike Castle in Delaware's Republican Senate primary. Castle, a moderate who once served as the state's governor, had been so favored to win in November that his decision to run had reportedly influenced Democrat Beau Biden, son of Vice President Joe Biden, to abandon plans to seek his father's old seat. But with O'Donnell's come-from-nowhere win Tuesday night, top Republicans in Washington now see virtually no chance the GOP will be able to pick up the Delaware seat this fall. As a result, they admit their already slim chance of winning back Republican control of the Senate is likely dead. “It's hard to see a path for us,” one senior Republican official, who declined to be named while discussing party strategy, told The Upshot. “Never say never, but it has become much harder for us after tonight.” According to Public Policy Polling, just 31 percent of Delaware voters believe O'Donnell is “fit” to hold office. She trails Democrat opponent Chris Coons by 16 points, according to the latest PPP survey. On Tuesday night, the National Republican Senatorial Committee issued a tepid statement of congratulations to O'Donnell, but a GOP official told Fox News the party has no plans of putting money into the race. Still, O'Donnell's surprise victory was significant win for the Tea Party Express, which spent $250,000 at the last minute to boost O'Donnell's campaign. Since the first primaries in early spring, she's the eighth tea party-endorsed candidate to defeat an establishment-backed GOP contender in an election cycle that has been dominated by voters choosing change over experience. Two weeks ago, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski lost her primary race to Joe Miller, who was backed by Palin and the Tea Party. Other surprise tea party wins among Senate candidates this year include Sharron Angle in Nevada and Rand Paul in Kentucky. In Florida, Marco Rubio was also endorsed by tea party activists, although he's tried to move toward the middle since winning the primary last month. The difference between O'Donnell and other tea party-backed Senate candidates is she's running in a state that traditionally elects moderates. O'Donnell, a perennial candidate who once argued against masturbation on a MTV special, is not likely to move toward the middle, as Rubio has, and she doesn't look to benefit from the same anti-incumbent wave that's driven Angle's poll numbers against Harry Reid in Nevada. That's the key reason why national Republicans are so loathe to embrace O'Donnell's candidacy. Not that she cares. “They have a losing track record,” O'Donnell told CNN Tuesday night. “If they're too lazy to put in the effort that we need to win, then so be it.” http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100915/el_yblog_upshot/tea-party-victory-… added by: littlwarrior
