By Adam Stewart Designer Drugs Photo: MTV It’s been a long road for Pennsylvania electronic duo Designer Drugs, but for Michael Vincent Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson, that’s half the fun. Having been making music together for well over 10 years, the duo recently debuted their second album, Hardcore/Softcore, on Ultra Records and have been thrust into the ever-expanding American dance-music audience. Now, on the heels of the album’s second single, “Through the Prism,” featuring rapper and fellow Brooklynite Cerebral Vortex, Designer Drugs are poised to bring their unique brand of grind-house electronic to the masses Thursday night (March 17) at Austin, Texas’ South by Southwest, followed by a huge set on the Live Stage at Ultra Music Festival in Miami on March 25. “We started doing a lot of remixes and just trying to make a specific kind of music,” Patrick told MTV News. “But now, with the album, we are just doing whatever we want and making more of an electronic album.” “We had, like, a hundred songs and riffs,” Nelson added. “And we just basically picked ones we thought were the best for the album and put them all on. We didn’t really have a good idea of what we wanted to accomplish, but it ended up being what it was and we were pretty happy with it at the end.” Kicking things off with the first single “Drop Down,” a wobbly synth monster reminiscent of an edgy Prodigy-esque sound garnished with Gregorian chants, the vibe DD bring to the dance-music game is unique and captivating. Hardcore/Softcore brings the art of an album back to the table, melding full-length tracks with melodic interludes. “I think it kind of helped to tell a story for this album, but we didn’t plan it,” Patrick said. “Nothing for this album was really planned. It all kind of happened; we wrote all the music and then kind of linked it together.” “We just thought, ‘This sounded cool, but let’s not make it an entire song; let’s just kind of put it in there and see what happens,’ ” Nelson added. “But we do listen to a lot of old classic-rock stuff, too, like Pink Floyd and all that other stuff. When we spoke to Wayne about signing Minaj, he told us how she developed into an artist who can hold her own. “I can’t front, I just thought she was going to be the new female MC that none of these other female MCs can touch,” Wayne told MTV News about Nicki . “But now, she’s blossomed into a megastar with this new attitude and this style. Now when I talk to her, I just tell her, ‘Do what you do, baby.’ I used to be able to go into the studio and say, ‘Nah, don’t say that, don’t say that.’ You know, ‘That was better.’ Now, do what you do, baby. 50 Cent Says Fans Can Expect Black Magic ‘This Summer’

The G-Unit rapper has continued to make inroads into Hollywood since his last project, 2009’s Before I Self-Destruct , but Fif told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival that he’ll be focusing on music in the near future. “[Fans] should look forward to the actual album this summer, so I have to release something soon,” he said about when to expect the first single. “I’m not sure if I’ll make a full mixtape [beforehand]. That’s what I was doing when I was making collaborations with new artists: I was working with artists that wouldn’t exactly be my equal because they don’t have a successful track record. But at some point you have to make the decision to just be an artist and work because you enjoy the music and you think it’s a good idea, as opposed to it being someone of your caliber.” 50 had already announced Eminem will appear on the album. But the Queens lyricist also said he’ll be working with a slew of new collaborators, including Boi-1da, Alex Da Kid and Kanye West’s “Power” producer Symbolyc One . Lil Wayne producers The Surf Club — Hit-Boy and Chase N. Cashe — said the Get Rich or Die Tryin’ superstar will revisit the aggression of his earlier work on his latest set. “He’s taking it back to the old 50,” Hit-Boy told us late last year. “And he had some new records that were some different-sounding stuff too. I’m excited to see how people react to it, and hopefully we end up with some stuff on the album. I gave him some stuff he really loved. On Thursday (January 13), DJ Khaled’s latest star-studded posse cut and first Cash Money offering, “Welcome to My Hood” hit the Net , featuring bars from Weezy, fellow Florida rappers Rick Ross and Plies and rumored Young Money signee T-Pain . The track, crafted by the Renegades, Khaled and the Nasty Beatmakers, features the victorious, speaker-shattering, hometown-pumping energy typical of the DJ’s all-star collabos, with Pain belting lines like, “Everybody know everybody/ And if I got it, everybody got it,” over the steely, bass-heavy beat. Ross leads things off, balancing glossy images of Audemars Piguet-laced wrists and mortgage-payment-sized bar tabs with grimy street operations, wrapping up with, “The Ferrari just a front/ Got the Lambo in the back/ Told you we the best forever/ DJ Khaled handle that.” Plies follows with a souped-up, eardrum-busting flow, detailing the exploits of his city’s hardened thugs. “I know some n—as from my ‘hood that would’ve rocked Noriega/ I’m taking Noriega, n—a, the real Noriega,” the Fort Myers rapper spits about hometown hooligans capable of ripping apart the infamous Panamanian politician and drug kingpin — not the Queens rapper Noreaga. Wayne closes the track with lyrics that reference his return to the game — and Khaled-helmed collabos — after his 2010 prison stay . “Back from hell, cell 23/ Tell the warden kiss my ass, pockets are Mo’Nique,” Weezy rhymes, shrugging off the drama of the jail bid. He also briefly touches on the 2007 weapons arrest that landed him in the pen, spitting, “Sh– happens, and since I’m the sh–, I’m who it happened to.” The I Am Not a Human Being rapper finishes with lines about his single-minded focus on re-conquering the game, rhyming, “All that bullsh– is for the birds/ Throw some bread out/ Got it sewed up/ Check the thread count.” Khaled hinted to MTV News last year that the first single for the forthcoming We The Best Forever would get the Wayne treatment. “When I work with Wayne, I always get the most classic verses, like ‘We Taking Over,’ ” Khaled said. “And this verse with my new one, it’s … I’m not even gonna lie: It’s amazing. “It’s one of them anthems that I do,” he added. “The streets are gonna embrace it on another level.
