GTFOHWTBS: Michigan Man Who Shot Black Teen Dead On His Porch Says He “Feared For His Life”

Would you be afraid enough to shoot without looking to see who it was first if someone was pounding on your door at 4 am? Michigan Man Claims He Shot Black Teen On His Porch Because He Feared For His Life The trial is underway for Theodore Wafer, a white suburban homeowner who shot 19-year-old McBride in the face as she sought help on his porch and he’s hoping the jury will sympathize with his fearfulness. Via Al-Jazeera America reports: Defense attorney Cheryl Carpenter on Wednesday appealed to a Detroit jury to “understand how Ted felt” before he shot an unarmed black teen on his porch last fall. “He was acting and reacting to escalating fear,” Carpenter said in her opening statement about Theodore Wafer, 55, on trial for second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Renisha McBride. “He had never been so scared in his entire life. It’s horrible and it’s sad that a 19-year-old woman is dead. But Ted is justified in what he did.” Whether it was reasonable for Wafer to think his house was under attack is the key question the jury must weigh as this galvanizing, racially charged trial proceeds in Detroit. Wafer is white and lives in the mostly white Detroit border city of Dearborn Heights. He killed McBride in the early hours of Nov. 2, when, he says, she was banging on his door. To the prosecution, this is a straightforward case of a trigger-happy homeowner who opened the front door and shot McBride rather than, if he was truly afraid, calling 911. He called 911 after the shooting occurred. “There was no sign of any attempted burglary, there’s no evidence of any effort to breaking in,” said prosecutor Danielle Hagaman-Clark in her opening remarks. “His actions that night are unnecessary, unjustified and unreasonable. Because of that, a 19-year-old girl is dead on a porch in Dearborn Heights. Would you have called 911 first? The defense attorney is already doing a “bang up” job describing Wafer’s state of mind before he pulled the trigger: Carpenter said Wafer was fast asleep in a recliner in his living room when, at around 4:20 a.m., someone banged on his door. Fearful, he lay on the floor and groped for his cellphone but could not find it. Over the subsequent minutes he panicked, believing his home was under siege by possibly more than one attacker and asserting he heard metal in the front door frame “breaking.” “They’re coming to get me,” Carpenter said, narrating Wafer’s thoughts in the moment. “It’s metal breaking. Breaking! On his front door. Ted hears it. Ted is thinking they’re coming in. They’re breaking [into] my house. Why? He doesn’t have a clue. He just knows they’re coming in.” Carpenter sought to defuse the racial elements of the case by insisting that Wafer didn’t know the color or gender of the person when he shot her. All he knew, she said, was that he opened his front door, noticed the screen frame a few inches out of its hinge and then fired the gun when McBride leaped onto the stoop, startling him. “Ted is shattered,” Carpenter said. “He knows immediately that he killed somebody … It was only after that he saw it was a shorter person. She seemed dark-complected but he isn’t sure. He didn’t know anything before he shot. All he knew was, ‘People are breaking into my house.’” Do you believe that he didn’t know she was black? In the meantime there is a lot working against the prosecution’s case, namely the fact that an autopsy has established McBride’s blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit and witnesses have confirmed she was drinking and smoking marijuana earlier that night. After opening statements, prosecutors called McBride’s mother and best friend. Between the two of them, they established that McBride had drunk vodka and smoked marijuana in the evening of Nov. 1 at home. Her mother said she and McBride argued because the teen hadn’t cleaned the house, and McBride left the house by car at around 11:15 p.m. Around 1 a.m., she crashed her car into that of Carmen Beasley, who lives about a mile from Wafer on the Detroit side of the city limits. Beasley said she tried to get McBride to stay put as they waited for the police and an ambulance, but McBride vanished. “She just wanted to go home,” Beasley testified. “She wasn’t belligerent. She was young and she just wanted to be at home. That was her goal, to be home.” This case is so sad. We really feel for McBride and her family and the prosecution is building a strong case that Wafer’s greatest error was going to the door with a locked and loaded shotgun, a weapon likely to do serious damage at such close range. But if a stranger knocked on your door at 4 am can you say you wouldn’t do the same? It’s not like he could see in the dark that she was bleeding from the head and needed help. Do you think it’s an open and shut case of him being guilty of second degree murder and manslaughter? AP Images

Jesus Take The Wheel: Malaysia Airlines Passenger Jokes About Possible Disappearance, Just Hours Before It Crashes

Irony at it’s worst. Dutchman Ironically Documents Malaysian Flight MH17 “In Case It Disappears” After the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 , it’s surprising that the airline was able to still book passengers. One passenger on today’s doomed flight actually joked about the plane possibly disappearing moments before he boarded. Via MailOnline : A haunting photograph of flight MH17 is believed to have been posted on Facebook by a Dutch passenger just moments before he boarded the doomed plane. The plane, pictured on tarmac, took off from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport at lunchtime today. It was shot down hours later on the Russia-Ukraine border in an ‘act of terrorism’, killing all 295 people on board. Cor Pan, who is listed on Facebook as living in Volendam in North Holland, uploaded the picture of the aircraft with the caption: ‘If it disappears, this is what it looks like.’ The comment is believed to have been a reference to Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 which disappeared while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8 March. After seeing the photo friends initially went along with the joke and wished him a good trip, but their messages quickly turned frantic when news of the crash emerged. Posting underneath the picture they asked whether his flight was the one that had gone down and said that they were praying that it wasn’t true. His cousin later posted the flight number underneath the picture and wrote: ‘Turns out our cousin Cor was on this plane.’ Yikes! Safe to say no one else is booking tickets on Air Malaysia. SMH. Katherine Webb and A.J. McCarron: Married!

Katherine Webb and AJ McCarron have tied the knot! The 2012 Miss Alabama, who became a quasi-celeb when ESPN announcer Brent Musberger ogled her during a football game, wed the recent NFL draft pick. She tied the knot with the former University of Alabama quarterback at the United Methodist Church in Orange Beach, Alabama, on Saturday afternoon. The 25-year-old Webb walked down the aisle with her father, Alan, and was attended by 10 bridesmaids, including her sister, Laurie, at the family affair. The groom’s best man was his brother Corey. McCarron, 23, started dating Webb (actually an Auburn graduate) in 2012, and a close-up shot of her at the national title game in 2013 put her on the map. Musberger went a little overboard admiring her in the stands, and soon enough, she was modeling in SI and being offered TV gigs left and right. McCarron proposed with a huge ring he designed himself this March. After graduating from Alabama, he was picked by the Cincinnati Bengals. Quite a big year for them! Congratulations! 25 Hot Katherine Webb Photos: ROLL TIDE! 1. Katherine Webb Bikini Pic Katherine Webb is your reigning Miss Alabama. She is also dating Tide quarterback AJ McCarron.

Cory Monteith Remembered: A Life in Pictures

One year ago today,  Cory Monteith died from a fatal heroin overdose. The actor’s shocking passing caused Glee to delay shooting for a few weeks while colleague mourned, especially girlfriend Lea Michele.  She went on to release her first solo album, saying in many interviews that Monteith helped her write many of the tracks and that many were penned with the star in mind. Take ” If You Say So ,” for example. Glee creator Ryan Murphy, meanwhile, has already said that he knows the final scene of his series (which wraps up in 2015) and that it will serve in some way to honor Monteith’s memory. We’ve published the following photo montage with the same goal in mind and continue to extend our condolences to the late actor’s loved ones… Cory Monteith Photos: In Memoriam… 1. Intellectual Idiots: Columnist Calls Politician A “Spear Chucker” Then Claims He Didn’t Know It Was Racial Slur

SMH… Talk about ignorance is bliss . NY Post Columnist Calls Politician A “Spear Chucker” This guy needs to face some serious repercussions for his careless choice of words. According to NY Daily News reports: New York Post political columnist Fred Dicker called an upstate senator a “spear chucker” for the predominantly black New York City Democratic delegation in a controversial on-air comment Thursday. A listener to Dicker’s radio show immediately called him out for the racially offensive comment. Dicker insisted he didn’t know the phrase was a racist slur. “There was NEVER any racial suggestion at all,” Dicker told the Daily News in an email. “I said on the air that I was referring to a political ‘spear carrier’ and thought that the other phrase meant the same thing,” Dicker said. “As soon as a listener called a possible misinterpretation to my attention, I quickly explained my position.” During his radio show on WGDJ Talk AM 1300, the veteran columnist, who is white, criticized state Sen. Neil Breslin (D-Albany), who is also white. “Has anyone heard anything from Neil Breslin in the last few years? He’s just like a spear carrier, spear chucker, for these New York City Democrats, but he doesn’t say anything about what’s going on around here,” Dicker said. Following a commercial break, Dicker clarified his statement after receiving the email from a listener. “I didn’t think it was a slur,” Dicker said on air. A spokeswoman for Rep. Charles Rangel said Dicker should apologize, saying, “Fred Dicker’s use of an unacceptable racial term on his radio program was highly insensitive and offensive.” The blunder comes after another on-air gaffe in January in which Dicker called the Newtown school shooting a “little convenient massacre.” Do you think they should take him off the air? Should the Post suspend him? CBS Local

Miley Cyrus Sends Video Message to Sick Fan Just Hours Before Her Death

Regardless of your feelings about Miley Cyrus’ revealing selfies or celebrity feuds, the following story is sure to leave you with admiration for the controversial pop star’s love for her fans. Caley Camarillo was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at a young age. She had been a fan of Miley’s since her Hannah Montana days and her parents were able to arrange for her to meet Miley during the early stages of her illness. Sadly, Caley passed away this week at the age  of 12. Fortunately, Miley was able to play a heartwarming role in the young girl’s final moments. Miley Cyrus Message to Sick Fan The above video was recorded by Miley the day that Caley died. According to a Facebook post written by Caley’s mother, watching the personal message from her favorite was one of the last things Caley did: “I just wanted to share how things go full circle,” wrote Theresa Camarillo. “Miley Cyrus was the very first celebrity that Caley was into and the very first celebrity that she met. Miley sent this video to Caley and she was able to watch it an hour before she passed. She managed to let out a smile. I take great comfort in this for some reason.” After her initial meeting with Miley, Caley went on to meet several other celebrities.  Taylor Swift’s work with sick children  led her to cross paths with Caley  on at least one occasion. But Caley was a Miley fan first and foremost. And it was a final, impeccably timed act of kindness by Miley that brought joy to a young girl’s final hour.
