Latino Group: Drinking Tequila, Eating Tacos Is Offensive To Mexicans According to these folks, your shady Jose Cuervo shots and guacamole eating on Cinco De Mayo is offensive! Via Fox News Radio: “Drinking tequila shots, eating tacos, and wearing sombreros do not commemorate Mexican culture; on the contrary, that offends, marginalizes and isolates many of our friends, classmates, and community leaders and casts our entire community in poor light,” wrote members of the group Alianza in a letter that was published in The Daily Northwestern. The letter was signed by members of the university’s Associated Student Government as well as members of the Latino group in response to Cinco de Mayo celebrations. “Some of our peers choose to throw ‘Mexican-themed’ parties that are culturally insensitive, offensive and detrimental to the Northwestern community,” they wrote. Instead, the group wanted students to celebrate Mexico’s “rich history” through parades, family gatherings and “folk dances.” However, a number of students who actually grew up in Mexico, said the student government association and the Latino group are way off base. “To whomever wrote and signed that letter, I’d like to say that I proudly embrace my tacos, tequila and sombreros,” said Ruben Antonio Marcos Bours. “To me, they are a key part of my childhood, growing up in Monterrey, Mexico.” And it turns out that the two co-presidents of Alianza are not even Mexican. “People think Alianza is representing Mexican culture on campus,” student Garcia Romero told the campus newspaper. “I see them as representing U.S. Hispanic culture. Very few of them have actually been to Mexico.” Romero said his friends back home probably celebrated Cinco de Mayo by drinking tequila and eating tacos. After generating widespread campus ridicule, the student group backtracked and said they were not trying to tell students how to celebrate the holiday. “We don’t even know how to celebrate,” co-president Darlene Reyes told the campus newspaper. As for their group – the Alianza marked Cinco de Mayo by roasting marshmallows. Really, though?? Glad there were some Mexican students to defend themselves on this one. Rush Limbaugh Compares Boston Marathon Bomber To Trayvon Martin Babbling bigot and right-wing enthusiast Rush Limbaugh is back on his best bullish in the wake of last week’s Boston Marathon bombing that rocked the nation . In true idiot fashion, Limbaugh took to his nationally syndicated radio show to voice his douche-bag opinion that the media coverage of the bombing suspect mirrors that of the media portrayal of slain teenager Trayvon Martin. via Think Progress Conservative radio prognosticator Rush Limbaugh used his nationally syndicated show on Tuesday to try and tie Dzhakar Tsarnaev, the captured suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings last week, to murdered teenager Trayvon Martin. Last March, weeks after 17-year-old Martin was shot and killed, Limbaugh and the rest of the conservative echo chamber spent a considerable amount of time attacking Martin’s character and pushing back against a widely circulated photograph of the teen, claiming that the media was trying to gin up sympathy for the murdered boy. On Tuesday, Limbaugh compared the media’s portrayal of Trayvon to the treatment of the captured Tsarnaev, citing the media’s use of slightly outdated photographs in both instances: He said that showing images of Tsarnaev at 14-years-old is an effort to humanize him and frame him as a “normal” or “mixed-up kid,” rather than an accused murder[er] and terrorist. ‘The news media are doing to Dzhokhar what they did to Trayvon Martin,” Limbaugh observed. “They’re regularly showing a photo of Dzhokhar that was taken when he was about 14. Soft, angelic, nice little boy. Harmless. Cute. Big, loveable eyes.” “Not at all what he looks like today,” Limbaugh added. “The way, when we’re shown Osama bin Laden, it’s in his shepherd pose with his walking stick, walking through the mountains or whatever.” It’s so interesting how this guy is so quick to point out alleged “similarities” between minorities who are accused of violence but makes no mention of similar media portrayal when the suspects in question are white (see: Sandy Hook gunman Adam Lanza , Batman Massacre gunman James Holmes,etc.) And by “so interesting,” we mean blatantly racist. SMH.

Soooo what exactly are they trying to say with the accessories though? Parents beware. Mattel is under fire for opening the door on the ugly immigration debate with their latest toy. Via International Business Times reports : A new Mexican Barbie in Mattel’s “Dolls of the World” series has sparked outrage for what opponents argue is an offensive depiction of Mexican culture. According to Fox News Latino, the new line of Barbie dolls was launched to appeal to a more “diverse generation” of customers and boasts a number of dolls from Latin America. But the Mexican Barbie, its newest addition, sparked a particular backlash when journalist Laura Martinez mocked it on her blog, writing, “The folks over at Mattel are so smart, that not only they have come up with a Mexican Barbie, but they have given her all the possible tools to go around the U.S. the world undisturbed [sic].” By “tools,” Martinez was referring not to the Barbie’s fiesta dress and pet Chihuahua, but more specifically, to the passport and sticker sheet she came with. “It is not for me to inform you about the ‘play value’ that a passport provides, so go ahead! Play with your Barbie Mexicana and don’t even think of calling her indocumentada,” Martinez wrote. While the bright pink passport isn’t specific to the Mexican Barbie (a passport comes included with all of the Barbies in the “Dolls of the World” collection, which was created in 1980) its inclusion struck a nerve among readers on sites like Twitter and Reddit. “’Mexican Barbie’: Only doll in International Collection that needs to show her passport. Unbelievable,” Twitter user @CSGRealty wrote. “Uh, #clueless? Mexican Barbie: Doll Comes With Documentation And Passport” journalist @AnneKeramer tweeted. In an interview with Fox News, Chairman and Co-founder of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts Felix Sanchez didn’t seem to take issue with the passport, but he said that Mattel could stand to modernize their dolls and make them less stereotypical. “It would be nice to see some contemporary images from these countries,” Sanchez said. “These images seem very dated and seem to have been created for a different time.” Sara Rosales, a spokeswoman for Mattel, said that the Barbie was created to help foster learning and appreciation of different countries and cultures. “Girls enjoy exploring the world and learning about different cultures through play,” Rosales said. “The Barbie brand understands the significance of introducing new cultures to girls in a relatable way.” If all the dolls come with a passport it doesn’t seem like a huge issue, but times are definitely changing and all corporations need to come with some serious cultural sensitivity training. Can somebody tell Suzy Lee Weiss we said, ‘Cry us a muhfuggin river!’ ? Please and thank you. On Sunday the illustrious Wall Street Journal published an article penned by a senior at Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh complaining that she was rejected from her schools of choice because she lacked diversity, among other things. But we’re thinking maybe admissions offices just figured out she might manage to tick off everyone else on campus. Some choice excerpts below: Colleges tell you, “Just be yourself.” That is great advice, as long as yourself has nine extracurriculars, six leadership positions, three varsity sports, killer SAT scores and two moms. Then by all means, be yourself! If you work at a local pizza shop and are the slowest person on the cross-country team, consider taking your business elsewhere. What could I have done differently over the past years? For starters, had I known two years ago what I know now, I would have gladly worn a headdress to school . Show me to any closet, and I would’ve happily come out of it. “Diversity!” I offer about as much diversity as a saltine cracker. If it were up to me, I would’ve been any of the diversities: Navajo, Pacific Islander, anything. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, I salute you and your 1/32 Cherokee heritage. I also probably should have started a fake charity. Providing veterinary services for homeless people’s pets. Collecting donations for the underprivileged chimpanzees of the Congo . Raising awareness for Chapped-Lips-in-the-Winter Syndrome. Fun-runs, dance-a-thons, bake sales—as long as you’re using someone else’s misfortunes to try to propel yourself into the Ivy League, you’re golden. Having a tiger mom helps, too. As the youngest of four daughters, I noticed long ago that my parents gave up on parenting me. It has been great in certain ways: Instead of “Be home by 11,” it’s “Don’t wake us up when you come through the door, we’re trying to sleep.” But my parents also left me with a dearth of hobbies that make admissions committees salivate. I’ve never sat down at a piano, never plucked a violin. Karate lasted about a week and the swim team didn’t last past the first lap. Why couldn’t Amy Chua have adopted me as one of her cubs ? Then there was summer camp. I should’ve done what I knew was best— go to Africa, scoop up some suffering child, take a few pictures, and write my essays about how spending that afternoon with Kinto changed my life. Because everyone knows that if you don’t have anything difficult going on in your own life, you should just hop on a plane so you’re able to talk about what other people have to deal with. Dark-skinned, light-skinned, Asian, and White women… Parks Department Workers Paid $165,000 Settlement For Racist Transfer Practices Via NYDailyNews The city will pay thousands of dollars to dark-skinned Parks Department workers who claim they were transferred out of tony Battery Park City in favor of white and light-skinned staffers amid threats and veiled complaints that they were too aggressive. The workers filed a discrimination suit after the March 2011 transfers — which came after months of escalating tensions between the mostly minority agents and some residents of the ritzy enclave. Racist signs and graffiti calling the Public Enforcement Patrol officers “thugs,” “pigs” and “n—–s” started popping up on benches and walls, according to the suit filed by 13 workers. The Parks Department wrongfully transferred eight dark-skinned workers out and brought in eight white, Asian or light-skinned Hispanics after the Battery Park City Authority — a private trust that pays the city $2 million for 31 PEP workers on its 32 acres — complained that some officers were too aggressive in ticketing residents, the suit charged. Residents of the waterfront neighborhood were pleased when PEP workers ticketed visitors — but annoyed when they got tickets for the same petty violations, said Charles St. Louis, a retired NYPD officer and PEP agent who is a plaintiff in the suit. What part of the game is THAT?! The city admitted no wrongdoing in the February agreement of $165,000 — $8,000 to each of the dark-skinned workers, plus the same payment to the replacement workers, who charged they were unwittingly put in the middle of a hostile situation. One black worker, George Parker, 62, will get a payment of $14,000 because a white resident went after him in a fury after another park worker questioned why his dog was off-leash. “I’ve been around a bit in my time, even Birmingham, Ala., and I’ve not seen much that was as bad as Battery Park City,” said Parker. “I got a lot of ‘I pay your salary’ and ‘You work for me’ when I tried to enforce the rules.” PEP worker Keshun Anderson, 40, said she was once called a “f—ing n—–” by the white resident who fought with Parker. Even in his advanced age Harry Belafonte remains a rebel with a cause… without a pause! Via Page Six reports : Harry Belafonte recalled the racism he suffered in the 1950s as a performer at Waldorf-Astoria during a speech there at the Amy Winehouse Foundation Gala Thursday, saying it “used to be one of the most racist pieces of real estate in America.” Belafonte recounted being hired by Claude Philippe, who was trying to desegregate the hotel. “I went into the hotel and [executives] realized that Belafonte wasn’t, as they suspected, some Frenchman on the loose. They went ape[bleep].” The hotel fired Philippe and tried to cancel Belafonte’s contract, he said, but it was iron-clad. “I did all I could to encourage my friends from Harlem, from Bed-Stuy to come . . . it was just a sea of black folk,” Belafonte continued, explaining they placed him in the Starlight Roof to avoid “racial contamination” in the Empire Room. He ended with how far the Waldorf has come. “I now have the lifetime right to stay in any Hilton hotel anywhere in the world for free if I would just keep my mouth shut and not tell this story.” We love this guy! Race Matters: Black People Are Three Times More Likely To Face The Death Sentence In Texas Than Whites

Black defendants facing trial in Houston, the death penalty capital of America – are more than three times as likely to face a possible death sentence than whites , new academic research has revealed. Black Prisoners More Likely To Get Death Penalty Than Whites Via The Guardian reports: The study, by a criminologist at the University of Maryland, exposes the extent of racial discrimination inherent in the administering of capital punishment in Harris County, the ground zero of the death penalty in the US. The county, which incorporates Houston, Texas’s largest city, has carried out 116 executions in the modern era – more than any entire state in the union apart from Texas itself. Professor Raymond Paternoster of the university’s institute of criminal justice and criminology was commissioned by defence lawyers acting in the case of Duane Buck, a death row prisoner from Houston whose 1995 death sentence is currently being reconsidered by the Texas courts. Paternoster, whose report is based on the latest quantitative methods, looked at 504 cases involving adult defendants who had been indicted for capital murder in Harris County between 1992 and 1999 – the period during which Buck was charged for murdering his former girlfriend, Debra Gardner, and a man called Kenneth Butler. Paternoster whittled down that pool to 20 cases that most closely echoed that of Buck’s own in terms of the factors involved in the crime that were likely to incur a death sentence. He found that of the 21 men, including Buck, seven out of the 10 who were African American were sent by the Harris County district attorney for capital trial, compared with just one of the five white defendants. “The probability that the district attorney will advance a case to a [death] penalty trial is more than three times as high when the defendant is African American than for white defendants,” Paternoster writes. He adds: “The disparity by race of the defendant, moreover, cannot be attributed to observed case characteristics because these cases are those that were most comparable”. The habeus petition chronicles the long and controversial history of the death penalty in Texas, particularly in Harris County. Though the county has a black population of 19%, African Americans represent almost 50% of the people detained in its jails, while 68% of the past 34 executions to emerge from the area involved black inmates. Derrick Rose Offers To Pay For Funeral Of Slain Chicago Infant Chicago Bulls player Derrick Rose has reached out to the family of the 6-month old baby girl who was tragically shot to death in Chicago on Monday and offered to cover the cost of her funeral.   Rose, who has a 4-month-old newborn baby boy himself [pictured above], also took to his Twitter express his condolences and love for his city following the horrific shooting news. via Inquisitor Defending Chicago Bulls MVP Derrick Rosehas reportedly offered to pay for the funeral of Jonylah Watkins, the 6-month-old baby who was tragically shot to death on the south side of the city on Monday. The Inquisitr reported earlier that an unidentified man walked up to a minivan on Monday and fired several shots in the window. Jonathan Watkins, who was the target of the shooting, was changing Jonylah Watkins’ diaper at the time. The little girl was shot five times. Watkins was also hit but he managed to survive the shooting. Rev. Corey Brooks, acting as a spokesman for Jonylah Watkins’ family, said: “He is giving them the information that they are asking for … He is answering every question.” Brooks also said that the family won’t have to worry about funeral costs as Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose has offered to take care of the funeral costs. This is such a horribly sad story. We continue to keep this family in our thoughts and prayers.

How much punishment is enough punishment for using a racial slur ? NASCAR is allowing Jeremy Clements to return to the track after some counseling following use of a racial slur in an interview. He wasn’t referring to blacks when he said the n-word and he’s since paid a fine and taken sensitivity training. So is it time to forgive him his indiscretion? Via Latinos Post : Two weeks after being suspended indefinitely by NASCAR for using an inappropriate slur during an interview at Daytona, Jeremy Clements has been reinstated to race again. Clements, a Nationwide Series driver, was reinstated on Wednesday, NASCAR officials announced, roughly two weeks after he was suspended for what NASCAR says was Clements’ use of the “n-word” during a Feb. 23 interview with MTV blogger Marty Beckerman during the weekend of the Daytona 500. After taking several racial insensitivity counseling sessions, NASCAR has agreed to reactivate Clements, but will keep him on probation until September. “As part of the requirements for reinstatement, Jeremy Clements participated in an individualized program with Dr. Richard Lapchick and his staff at the National Consortium for Academics and Sports,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR senior vice president of racing operations in an official statement on NASCAR’s website. “In Dr. Lapchick and his staff’s judgment, Jeremy has successfully completed the program. We’re pleased that Jeremy has taken these important steps and will return to racing starting this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway.” The suspension cost Clements $2,400 to take the classes and he missed out on two races at Phoenix and Las Vegas. In an interview with ESPN, Clements, 28, said that this period was a tough time for him, but he had learned a lot from the experience and about using certain words in a racial context. “I learned a great deal about that and myself, how it affects everything that has to do with family, friends, church, sponsors and the team. I’m excited to be back in the race car. Nothing like that will ever happen again,” he said. The comment drew attention at a time where NASCAR has been blossoming outwards in diversity with the rise of female race car star Danica Patrick and the arrival of African-American driver Darrell Wallace Jr. as a full-time Truck Series participant. “We want as many different fans as we can get,” Clements said. “We want a diverse set of fans and people to be in the sport. I definitely don’t want people turned away from [NASCAR] just because that word was used one time. Based on the original account of the incident, Clements used the word to refer to a “racing term” and not in regards to any specific person or race of people. Via ESPN : “He [Clements] walked us toward where she was, and on the way over, I explained to him that ‘Guy Code’ [the name of an MTV blog] is rules for guys, how you treat your friends, how you treat your ladies, things like that. I was there to do a humor piece, so I asked him what would be ‘Guy Code’ for race car drivers, and he blurted out [a phrase that used the N-word].” Should that matter? NASCAR
