Lil Wayne’s Jail Time: A Prison Guard Breaks Down His Routine

Rapper is expected to start one-year prison sentence Tuesday. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway and Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne Photo: Thaddeus Now that Lil Wayne’s teeth are in order , the superstar MC is expected once again to turn himself in to authorities, this time on Tuesday, to finally begin his one-year prison sentence stemming from a 2007 arrest on gun charges. The rapper will be formally sentenced in a Manhattan courtroom by Judge Charles H. Solomon after last month’s postponement due to Wayne’s dental surgery . Wayne is scheduled to enter his plea, and authorities will then whisk him away for processing at New York’s Rikers Island. There, Weezy’s world will be unlike anything he’s experienced before in his life. According to a prison guard who spoke with MTV News, the Cash Money lyricist’s hectic life of recording, touring and performing will be replaced by a regimented routine that features wakeup calls at 4 a.m. and dinner at 3 p.m. The guard, who declined to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the information, said Wayne should be treated like a regular inmate for the most part, obvious safety concerns aside. “He’ll be housed with inmates who are classified in his category, and he’ll be able to be a regular inmate,” the guard said. “He’ll be able to watch television, go into the day room and congregate with people of his classification.” Wayne’s classification, however, will most likely be decided based in part on his fame, the guard said. The guard also suggested Wayne would be placed in the Eric M. Taylor Center at Rikers, on the north side of the facility in East Elmhurst, New York. “It’s a high-class area where he will be segregated from [the general] population,” the guard explained. The rapper, though, won’t be in a dormitory setting, as a retired corrections officer told MTV News last month. He’ll likely have his own 10-by-15-foot cell with a toilet, sink, bed and one window. “He’ll be able to see another wall [outside the window],” the guard said. Wayne also will not be able to make many of his own decisions during his incarceration, including what recreation he participates in and the option to work. “He probably won’t be assigned a job, just to keep things quiet,” the guard said, alluding to the rapper’s safety and the overall safety of the unit he’s placed in. When Wayne graced the cover of Rolling Stone recently, he said he would bring an iPod loaded with music he could write to; the guard, however, emphasized that an mp3 player would be classified as contraband, meaning the rapper would not be permitted to have one. Weezy will have plenty of downtime, though, of which he can choose how he passes the time. In between the rapper’s 4 a.m. wakeup calls for breakfast, 11 a.m. lunchtimes, 3 p.m. dinners and evening lights out, he has a number of options. He’s allowed to receive two visits per week, which can be any day of the week or weekends at various times. With his commissary money, he can purchase a transistor radio. It’s unlikely that he’ll visit the law library, as he has no appeal to make for his case; he’s widely expected to be released after eight months if he serves with good behavior. If he wishes to participate in religious activity, he can be excused to visit the places of worship within the prison. Throughout Wayne’s sentence, he’ll have an intermittent amount of time to interact with fellow inmates. According to the guard, that decision is one that is made by the governing officers of the facility to keep things orderly. For the most part, Wayne will be isolated and treated like any other numbered prisoner at Rikers Island. “He’ll have no preferable treatment at all. He’ll be treated like a regular inmate,” the guard said, with one added caveat: “He may have heightened security. A guard will walk with him when he moves from location to location.” Related Videos Lil Wayne Goes To Jail

Yung Berg Denies Being Robbed

‘I’m fine; I’m good,’ rapper says in video blog dispelling rumors that he was beaten and robbed in L.A. By Jayson Rodriguez Yung Berg Photo: Neilson Barnard/ Getty Images “Sexy Can I” rapper Yung Berg has taken to Twitter and YouTube to dispel rumors that he was beaten and robbed at gunpoint in Los Angeles last weekend. On Wednesday morning (February 24), TMZ reported that the Chicago-born lyricist was “violently beaten” during a house party after four assailants entered the premises. The gossip site said that Berg and another person were attacked, and the suspects made away with $10,000 in chase and jewelry. But police told MTV News on Wednesday that there was no police report on file that mentioned the rapper (born Christian Ward). Berg himself denied the report on Wednesday afternoon (February 24) in a two-minute video blog he posted on YouTube . The rapper looked directly into the camera and displayed no traces of having been assaulted. “I’m fine; I’m good,” he said. “There’s nothing wrong with nobody. I’m still gorgeous. I love you Mom, thanks you for these good genes.” Young Berg’s reps had not responded at press time to an inquiry made by MTV News, but TMZ reported that a rep for the rapper indicated he wasn’t even in California when the crime was allegedly committed. Instead, Berg was in Las Vegas, and in the YouTube clip he says he’s been there recording music. News of the alleged incident made #YungBergsChain one of the top trending topics on Twitter and Yung Berg became a top Google search term. “Shout out to TMZ,” Berg said in his video. “Thank you for the free promo and publicity — it’s just not the right publicity. I wish I was talking about the album or the mixtape.” The rapper has been subject to numerous robbery hoaxes after reported altercations occurred between the upstart artist and Detroit underground act Trick Trick, and after a separate incident involving Maino. But Berg urged his Twitter followers to dismiss the latest rumors. “PLEASE BELIEVE HALF OF WHAT U SEE,” he wrote in all caps. “AND NONE OF WAT U HEAR!!!! : )” Related Artists Yung Berg

Lil Wayne, Shanell Deny They’re Having A Baby

‘It’s so foolish we’ve haven’t paid it any attention,’ Shanell tells MTV News of rumors. By Hillary Crosley, with additional reporting from Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne and Shanell Photo: Prince Williams/ATLPics.net Lil Wayne may have an impending jail sentence, but in recent days some news about the MC has set the Internet chatter ablaze: Does he have another baby on the way? The Cash Money MC has been spotted attending events and snuggling with a new artist on his Young Money label named Shanell. The Massachusetts-born/Atlanta-raised songstress (real name: Shanell Woodgett), sister of former Danity Kane member D. Woods, began as a background dancer for artists like Kandi Burress, Petey Pablo and Ne-Yo before deciding to write songs. Teaming with her high school friend and producer Bangladesh, Shanell recorded a demo tape and aimed to become an artist herself along with writing for other people. She met Wayne while serving as a back-up dancer for Ne-Yo during the Up Close and Personal Tour (which featured the rapper along with Chris Brown) and eventually passed the rapper Bangladesh’s beat for “A Milli,” which became a huge street hit for the Young Money leader. Soon after, Shanell joined Lil Wayne’s artist enclave and began recording, touring and performing her single “Play in My Band” as well as co-writing songs for Wayne. Now, as she preps her as-yet-untitled debut album, Shanell said the rumors about whether she’s dating Lil Wayne have run rampant but have no basis in reality. “Basically it came from a corny rumor that escalated,” Shanell told MTV News.”First I was dating him, then I was his girlfriend, then we were getting married, then we were settling down and now I’m pregnant. It’s so foolish we’ve haven’t paid it any attention.” So what of the widely circulated photo where the two are hugging? “We’re taking a picture,” she said. The singer-songwriter says that the dating rumors were fine, but the pregnancy chatter was not. “All the rest of the rumors were kinda funny except that one,” she admitted. “When my mother called me like, ‘Um?,’ [I was] like, ‘No! Are you serious?’ I don’t care about the rumors, but I just want people to know that I’m not pregnant. I’ve got an album coming out, I’m a dancer, I’m in shape and children are not anywhere in my future.” Lil Wayne agrees. “Let me clear up this rumor, man: Shanell is not pregnant from me,” Wayne said in a serious tone on a Ustream video last weekend. “Shanell isn’t even pregnant! Period. Clear that up right now, man. Everybody talking about Shanell pregnant by … No, she not even pregnant. Period.” Lil Wayne may not be the father this go round, but he saw the birth of three sons — from an unnamed Ohio native, singer Nivea Nash and actress Lauren London — between 2008 and 2009 alone. His first child’s name is Reginae Carter, from his marriage to Toya Carter. Related Photos Lil Wayne, Drake Celebrate Shanell’s Birthday Related Artists Lil Wayne

Kanye West On Alexander McQueen: ‘We Lost An Angel!’

‘He was so important and special,’ West blogs. ‘We lost an angel!’ By Jayson Rodriguez Alexander McQueen and Kanye West Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage Kanye West has always had an affinity for fashion, and the late designer Alexander McQueen was one of the rapper’s favorite icons. McQueen was found dead in London on Thursday (February 11). West remembered McQueen in a blog post on Thursday afternoon calling the edgy designer a “genius” and an “angel.” “McQueen … So devastating,” ‘Ye wrote in all capital letters. “He was a genius … He was so important and special … We lost an angel!” It wasn’t the first time the 808s & Heartbreak star shouted out the popular British native on his blog. Last year, West heaped praise on McQueen’s spring show collection , and even posted images of the entire collection online. The entry spanned four pages on the rapper’s site and featured over 30 pairs of funky heels that enamored fans of McQueen’s with their obtuse designs. West, like Kelis, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga , among other musicians and celebrities, were huge fans of McQueen’s work. The rapper regularly attended McQueen’s fashion shows: In 2007, he and his former fiance, neophyte designer Alexis Pfeiffer, were spotted in France at McQueen’s show for Paris Fashion Week. And West attended McQueen’s showcase in New York last year, during Fall Fashion Week. West called the 2009 event in a blog post. Lil Wayne: Off to the Dentist, Prison

Lil Wayne is off to prison . But first, dude needs to get his grill fixed. After giving the judge in his weapons possession case a mouthful (har har), Weezy won a temporary reprieve from prison, where he was supposed to be sent today. His one-year-term was to begin at today’s sentencing, but it didn’t. That’s because Lil Wayne has to go to the dentist to fix all the bull$h!t going on in his mouth. The judge won’t throw him in the can until his surgery is complete. GRILLED : The judge in Lil Wayne’s weapons case gave him a temporary reprieve . But this will be the rapper’s last oral (har har!) argument. The judge said no more excuses on March 2, when Wayne shows up for sentencing … for real this time. The frequent baby daddy was already planning a T.I.-like farewell, having sent one final message to his fans via his Ustream page : “Don’t forget about me!” On what was to be his final night of freedom for a year (he’s now got 20 more), he told his online supporters simply: “I really, really, really, really love you.”
