Catching Fire: First Look at Finnick!

We still have nearly a year to go until Catching Fire hits the theaters, but Hunger Games fans are in for a thrill this week: The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly features Jennifer Lawrence on the cover as Katniss Everdeen – and also Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair! It’s our first look at this British actor in the key role: Claflin tells the magazine that he was petrified to film the infamous scene in which Finnick interacts with Katniss while donning nothing but strategically placed netting, explaining: It was “the scariest moment of my life. I’m on Twitter and so many people have been like ‘Don’t mess this up, or we will kill you.’” Considering the rising star is still alive – and in the running to play Four in Divergent – it’s safe to assume he nailed the role. This copy of EW will be available newsstands Friday, January 11.

‘Amour’ Is A Masterpiece For Brave Audiences

Amour is a true rarity, and for lovers of cinema it is one of the year’s high notes, though it’s most certainly no easy ride. Austria’s Best Foreign-language contender in the Oscars race, the feature by director Michael Haneke is a true masterpiece dealing with a topic most would rather ignore. The feature, which will be released by Sony Pictures Classics this weekend Stateside, most certainly is in the running for more than one Oscar nomination or at least it should be. Amour deservedly won the Palme d’Or in Cannes in May where it debuted and was even picked by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association as their Best Film of 2012. That is some feat for a film that centers on an elderly Parisian couple who are suddenly faced with illness and life’s sunset, beating out Hollywood’s big contenders. [ Related: LA Film Critics Name ‘Amour’ Best Picture, Boost ‘The Master,’ Jazz Up Oscar Race ] [ Editor’s Note: Movieline covered comments by ‘Amour’ director Michael Haneke and its terrific actors Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva at the Cannes Film Festival in May and is re-published here timed to the film’s opening Friday December 21. ] Haneke is certainly no stranger to awards in Cannes. He won the top prize just in 2009 for The White Ribbon as well as Best Director in 2005 for Caché (Hidden) and the Grand Prize of the Jury for The Piano Teacher back in 2001. Actors Jean-Louis Trintignant ( The Conformist ) and Emmanuelle Riva ( Priest ) sublimely portray the couple whose lives suddenly change after Riva’s character, Anne, suffers an attack. She is left in a slowly deteriorating state of dementia and her husband takes on the burden of caring for her while their daughter, played by Isabella Huppert, feels shut out. Mostly a theater actor in recent years, Trintignant was persuaded by Haneke to once again take to the screen for his first film since 1998’s Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train by Patrice Chéreau. “I didn’t want to act in films; I prefer the theater. But Haneke offered me this great opportunity,” he said — then clarified, “But I won’t do it again.” Trintignant, who was an early target of the paparazzi here back in the late ’50s because of rumors he was having an affair with Brigitte Bardot, his co-star in …And God Created Woman , added, “It’s a great joy to work with Michael Haneke. I’ve never met such a demanding director. He knows the cinema through and through.” Haneke will probably never be accused of being overly forthcoming when discussing his films. The heavy subject matter in Amour quite frankly will not appeal to everyone, but it’s already being called a masterpiece. He did acknowledge, however, that the material is challenging. “I never write a film to show something. Once you reach a given age, you have to contend with the suffering of someone you love,” Haneke said. “It’s inevitable – in my family as well.” In telling this story of slow loss, Haneke made great effort to avoid heavy emotion, which might have been an easy method of audience seduction. With that backdrop, Riva said she became familiar with Anne as she played her on set for over two months. She also noted that she almost doesn’t think of the person she sees on screen as herself. “Michael said to me, ‘Don’t be overly sentimental when playing Anne,’ and then it really clicked into place for me,” she said. “When I watch the film I get the feeling I’m seeing someone else. Obviously it’s not a universe steeped in beauty. I raced to the set every morning. I was in a hurry to get back to the set to act.” Added Haneke: “Within a dialog you have to find the right emotions. It’s like an opera in that sense.”

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ First Look: Dane DeHaan Is Your New Harry Osborn

Fanboy movie news is out of control today. If this were the 1930s we’d need a massive montage of spinning newspaper headlines. First, talk of Darkseid in Justice League , then the (extremely uninspired) poster from Star Trek Into Darkness , and new art from Man of Steel . Not to be outdone, Marc Webb , readying The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , has thwipped a tweet our way with the first glimpse of our new Harry Osborne – Dane DeHaan. Dane DeHaan, whose ten letter name makes economic a mere three consonants and two vowels, was said to be in the running for Spidey’s new foe against other young men like Alden Ehrenreich (a good actor, but too many letters), Brady Corbet, Eddie Redmayne , Boyd Holbrook, Douglas Booth and Sam Claflin . DeHaan, if you recall, was the main character in the surprisingly effective found-footage superhero (or was it supervillain ?) film Chronicle . Harry Osborn, the son of OsCorp’s Norman Osborn, was played by James Franco in the original Sam Raimi trilogy. DeHaan certainly has that weight-of-the-world sulk down pat, which is a key part of Webb’s Spider-Man aesthetic. The gals who flock to see skinny high school aged white boys will have their needs met, despite DeHaan actually being nearly 27. (That’s okay, Andrew Garfield will be over 30 when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 comes out, which leads me to think that I should probably be rubbing some of that sticky, milky Spidey substance all over my pores.) In the first Amazing Spider-Man 2 look Tweeted today by Webb, DeHaan has a bit of a scrappy look (don’tcha just want to tussle his hair?) but there’s something ominous in his eyes… as if off in the distance he sees an epic climax involving well known New York City landmarks and an inordinate amount of computer generated imagery. About Time!!! Ex-Florida GOP Chair Admits Shady Republican Voter Laws Focused On Race

Finally, one of these fools speaks out ; even if we already knew what they were doing down in Florida . According to The Huffington Post , Jim Greer’s putting Governor Rick Scott on blast and has nothing to hide…anymore: Jim Greer, the former head of the Florida Republican Party, recently claimed that a law shortening the early voting period in the state was deliberately designed to suppress voting among groups that tend to support Democratic candidates, the Palm Beach Post reports. “The Republican Party, the strategists, the consultants, they firmly believe that early voting is bad for Republican Party candidates,” Greer told the Post. “It’s done for one reason and one reason only…‘We’ve got to cut down on early voting because early voting is not good for us.’” The HB 1355 law, which was passed by Florida’s Republican legislature and signed by Gov. Rick Scott (R) in Nov. 2011, cut the number of early voting days from 14 to eight. It was publicly sold as an effort to reduce voter fraud and to save money, but Greer says that this was simply a “marketing ploy.” Greer served as Florida’s GOP chairman from 2006 until 2010 when he was forced to resign after allegedly stealing money from the party. He was arrested and his case is pending. Scott’s predecessor, Republican-turned-Independent Charlie Crist, resisted efforts from Republicans to shorten the state’s early voting period, citing reasons that mesh with Greer’s claims. In an interview with The Huffington Post earlier this month, Crist said the new law is clearly aimed at curbing turnout among Democrats. “The only thing that makes any sense as to why this is happening and being done is voter suppression,” he said. Crist added, “People have fought and died for our right to vote, and unfortunately our legislature and this governor have decided they want to make early voting less available to Floridians rather than more available … It’s hard for me as an American to comprehend why you don’t make democracy as easy as possible to exercise for the people of our state. It’s frankly unconscionable.” Greer also acknowledged that the effort to restrict early voting would directly affect turnout among Florida’s African Americans, a demographic that consistently supports Democrats. “The sad thing about that is yes, there is prejudice and racism in the party but the real prevailing thought is that they don’t think minorities will ever vote Republican,” he told the Post. He may have just stated the obvious but we’ll take the admission anyway! Images via tumblr

James Cameron Eyes Post-Avatar Life With The Informationist

James Cameron said last Spring he disbanded his production company’s development wing, noting that aside from his deep-sea submarine dives, that he’s exclusively in the ” Avatar business – meaning Avatar 2 , Avatar 3 and possibly Avatar 4 . Well, that was then and this is now… But, Cameron’s production company has picked up rights to Taylor Stevens’ thriller novel The Informationist which he’ll likely direct and produce. “I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them,” he told the New York Times earlier in the year. While Avatar -orama is still on, Cameron is eyeing a filmmaking life beyond the 3-D behemoth. Avatar ‘s follow-up may not hit screens for another four to five years, so it may be quite a number of years before The Informationist actually makes its way into production. But for now the plan is that his Lightstorm Entertainment label will develop the adaptation for 20th Century Fox, THR reports . “This was an opportunity to continue our relationship with Fox and Jim Gianopulos beyond the Avatar films,” Landau said in a statement to THR. “We were drawn to this book because of the terrific, compelling narrative and the character, who typifies the strong female protagonists that have inhabited Jim’s work. In this case, Vanessa Munroe is essentially a mix of Lisbeth Salander and Jason Bourne.” Said Cameron: “Taylor Stevens’ Vanessa Michael Munroe is an intriguing and compelling heroine with an agile mind and a thirst for adventure. Equally fascinating for me is her emotional life and her unexpected love story.” Amazon’s description of The Informationist: Stevens’s blazingly brilliant debut introduces a great new action heroine, Vanessa Michael Munroe, who doesn’t have to kick over a hornet’s nest to get attention, though her feral, take-no-prisoners attitude reflects the fire of Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander….Thriller fans will eagerly await the sequel to this high-octane page-turner.” —Publishers Weekly, starred, boxed review Vanessa “Michael” Munroe deals in information—expensive information—working for corporations, heads of state, private clients, and anyone else who can pay for her unique brand of expertise. Born to missionary parents in lawless central Africa, Munroe took up with an infamous gunrunner and his mercenary crew when she was just fourteen. As his protégé, she earned the respect of the jungle’s most dangerous men, cultivating her own reputation for years until something sent her running. After almost a decade building a new life and lucrative career from her home base in Dallas, she’s never looked back. [ Sources: THR , The Film Stage , Amazon ]

Kelly Clarkson Goes Gaga in Houston

Kelly Clarkson went Gaga during a concert in Houston on Friday night. Lady Gaga, that is! The singer took her incredible act to her home state of Texas over the weekend and continued to honor fan requests, as she’s done so all summer long at stops in Illinois (” Cry Me a River “) and Virgina (” No Scrubs “). This time, the evening’s cover focused on the music world’s most eccentric Twitter user, with Clarkson risking the wrath of 25 million Little Monsters. Did she deserve their admiration or their ire following a version of “You and I?” Decide for yourself now:

Ryan Lochte Angling For Gossip Girl Cameo

Ryan Lochte would love to score a cameo on Gossip Girl. The reason is simple: Blake Lively stars on Gossip Girl . Since his powerhouse performances at the London Olympics, the swimming champion has already booked guest-starring gigs on both 90210 and 30 Rock and was even considered (briefly) as a candidate for The Bachelor (he’s now out of the running). Not shabby. At the Rebecca Minkoff show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC last week, Ryan was asked what show would he love to book next? “Gossip Girl,” the 28-year-old answered with a big smile, adding that “If I’m ever [considered for a cameo on] Gossip Girl, I will not turn that down .” Why? “Because I have a big crush on Blake Lively!” Sorry man. Blake Lively married Ryan Reynolds last night in S.C. But it’s okay to crush on her still, right? At least that’s what we’re telling ourselves. [Photos: WENN.com]
