Like, nightmare fuel. Unbelievably misguided, lazy, slapped-together and unsightly. And really, that’s not even counting the American marketing at this point.

Movieline wondered whether the raciness of the images might actually win the franchise more fans but it appears the production team isn’t willing to take that risk.

Adam Sandler’s Box-Office Victory Over Justin Bieber Explained

Experts weigh in on how ‘Just Go With It’ beat ‘Never Say Never.’ By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler in “Just Go With It” Photo: Sony Pictures Contrary to Bieber Fever-induced speculation that “Never Say Never” was going to gross seven gajillion dollars this weekend, Justin Bieber’s 3-D concert flick fell just short of the #1 box-office spot. Instead, Adam Sandler’s weakly reviewed rom-com “Just Go With It” came out on top , with the film’s estimated $31 million haul just besting the $30.3 million that “Never Say Never” took in. Both films deserve B.O. kudos, but the question remains: With a rabid fanbase and a premium ticket price, why didn’t Bieber’s movie do better? After all, “Hannah Montana/ Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” opened in 2,400 fewer theaters in 2008 yet managed to open with $31.1 million. So what happened? “I think two reasons why Justin didn’t beat Miley were that the ‘Hannah Montana’ movie came at the beginning of the 3-D boom, so it was more of a special and rare event,” Gitesh Pandya, editor of BoxOfficeGuru.com, told MTV News. “Plus it was promoted as a one-week-only run, so fans felt there would not be another time to see it. In addition, tickets were $15 each for Miley where they varied across the country for Justin but were mostly lower.” There’s also potentially a gender-based explanation, according to Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations . “Tween girls showing their ‘love’ for another girl is widely acceptable, because at that age, they are more than likely to have mostly girls as friends,” he said. “As a tween-ager, often admitting you like boys is still a bit of a taboo, which makes the nearly $30 million debut of Biebs all the more impressive.” The “Never Say Never” audience, it should be noted, was 84 percent female, according to Paramount’s exit data. “Just Go With It,” meanwhile, appealed to a vastly different demographic. So the two films didn’t suffer from audience cannibalization. The truth just might be that $30.3 million, at this point in time, is as high as “Never Say Never” could ever go. As Bock put it, the movie “definitely maxed out its box-office appeal over the weekend.” That being said, it remains impressive that “Just Go With It” — which received a measly 18 pecent freshness rating at the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator — was able to notch a $30 million-plus opening. To begin with, while it didn’t benefit from premium 3-D ticket prices, Sandler’s comedy debuted on about 700 more screens than “Never Say Never.” And though Bieber is new to Hollywood, Sandler has become one of its most reliable brands. “Reviews are irrelevant in Sandler’s world,” Pandya said. “He makes formulaic comedy vehicles that are easy to digest and require little thinking and a lot of people like that sort of thing. It’s the same formula for hit sitcoms but used in a multiplex. Say what you want about his talents, but the man has had $100 million hits in 10 of the last 13 years and has accomplished this without doing sequels, even though it seems he plays the same guy every time.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Just Go With It” and “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Just Go With It’: The Reviews Are In!

Adam Sandler fans will surely hit the theater whether critics are into it or not. By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler in “Just Go With It” Photo: Sony Pictures Like the iPhone 4, Adam Sandler movies are basically review-proof. His comedies never engender the sort of critical praise that, say, Judd Apatow’s often do, yet crowds reliably show up to watch Sandler do his thing. So perhaps we shouldn’t pay much mind to the often harsh reviews that have greeted his latest laugher, the Jennifer Aniston-co-starring rom-com, “Just Go With It.” After all, even in the face of stiff competition from Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never,” Sandler’s flick is expected to win the weekend’s box-office crown. Possibly, though, you want to know a little more about “Just Go With It” than whose face fills nearly every scene. In that case, read on to find out what the critics have to say! The Story “Sandler plays Danny, a plastic surgeon and schlub who marries a shrew but discovers post-divorce (and post-nose job) that the gold band is a magnet for bar chicks. That changes when he meets Palmer (the stunning Brooklyn Decker), which prompts him to shove the ring in his pocket to woo her beachside. Everything’s hunky-dory until Palmer discovers the ring in Danny’s pocket and naturally assumes he’s married. Here’s where the film takes its first characteristic step: Instead of explaining himself, Danny concocts a bizarre lie that he’s separated from his wife and close to a divorce. To maintain that lie, he persuades his assistant, Katherine (Aniston), to not only play his soon-to-be-ex-wife but to come with her two children to Hawaii to, well, make the movie feature length.” — Scott Bowles, USA Today The Look and the Laughs “[Director Dennis] Dugan constantly shoots their paid vacation and indeed the entire film like a commercial, and with the rampant product placement, it’s hard not to believe that’s the case. Cuts are sloppy, dialogue looping is obvious, and although they must’ve seemed fresh after every take on set, Sandler’s perpetual off-the-cuff name checks become a monotonous crutch in scene after scene. The man can’t resist ethnic stereotypes, plastic surgery mishaps, shots to the groin or sheep resuscitation gags (a moment any other film would’ve played off as something funnier said than shown), and the film runs nearly two hours for all its allegedly comedic indulgences.” — William Goss, Cinematical The Chemistry “[Aniston] has got expert comic timing when all those around her have none; she’s got lightness and finesse when everyone else is being indulgently silly. She plays like a grown-up; she looks fab. And she gets a real commitment out of Sandler — her performance makes him grow up, too. Amidst the wreckage of ‘Just Go With It,’ Aniston and Sandler have a real chemistry. They should go elsewhere with it.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly The Dissenters “Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production team has rarely put much stock in the rules of classical storytelling, but its newest project, ‘Just Go With It,’ manages to misfire in two seemingly incompatible directions. A puerile kiddie-comedy without the anarchic energy, and a schmaltzy romantic comedy without the sweetness, this Hawaii-set farce is too frantic and too lackadaisical a take on the oft-adapted French play ‘Cactus Flower.’ Working with longtime director Dennis Dugan, Sandler and the rest of the film’s marquee cast could nonetheless steer it toward good returns.” — Andrew Barker, Variety The Final Word “It had been one of the minor inducements to longevity, this crazy hope of one day actually seeing Jennifer Aniston in a good movie. That day arrives with ‘Just Go With It,’ a very funny romantic comedy that nicely combines Adam Sandler’s acerbic sweetness with Aniston’s down-to-earth warmth — and that finds an excuse for Aniston to both play an average person and yet dress like a movie star. The screenplay has a setup that borders on farce, but the romantic heart of it is strong and expresses something unusual. It’s a movie about the romance of familiarity, about the satisfaction and spiritual necessity of actually knowing someone and being known. So much of movie romance is usually about the opposite of that, about going off into the unknown, about adventure in the form of, not physical danger, but emotional danger. ‘Just Go With It’ makes a feint in that direction, but not enough to fool anybody.” — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle Check out everything we’ve got on “Just Go With It.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Johnny Depp To Cameo In Adam Sandler’s ‘Jack And Jill’

Director Dennis Dugan confirms Depp’s cameo to MTV News at ‘Just Go With It’ premiere. By Eric Ditzian Johnny Depp Photo: CBS On the absolutely frigid red carpet for Adam Sandler’s “Just Go With It” on Tuesday night, MTV News got an answer to a burning question about another upcoming Sandler comedy, “Jack and Jill.” Last month, paparazzi photos surfaced showing Johnny Depp visiting the set of “Jack and Jill,” in which Sandler plays both halves of a boy/girl set of twins, leading to speculation that the “Pirates of Caribbean” star will make a cameo in the flick. We put that question to director Dennis Dugan — who’s helmed not only “Just Go With It” and “Jack and Jill,” but five other Sandler films — and got a cameo confirmation. “There’s a secret guest star, but I can’t say who it is,” Dugan said, before admitting: “Johnny Depp.” We followed up to make sure Dugan wasn’t just messing with us. “No!” he said. So we can mark that rumor as official fact, though Dugan stopped short of letting us know the exact nature of Depp’s cameo. But the mere fact that Depp has signed on for the appearance is not only kind of great, but gives us hope that he’ll also pop up for a cameo in the big-screen adaptation of “21 Jump Street.” Goodness knows MTV News has been doing everything we can to make that happen . In non-Depp-related “Jack and Jill” news, we’ve got another scoop for you: the answer to the question of what Sandler looks like dressed up as a woman. Said Dugan, “Not Brooklyn Decker in ‘Just Go with It.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Just Go With It.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston Discuss Box-Office Showdown With Justin Bieber

Their ‘Just Go With It’ opens against ‘Never Say Never’ this weekend. By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler at the “Just Go With it” premiere Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage NEW YORK — The palm trees, tiki-themed decorations and ocean-blue carpet at the Tuesday-night premiere of Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston’s “Just Go With It” didn’t fool anyone: Despite a tent meant to keep the winter at bay, it was freezing outside the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York, a far cry from the sunny Hawaiian clime in which much of the romantic comedy takes place. Yet Sandler, Aniston and their co-stars projected nothing but warm vibes as they made their way past a massive throng of photographers and toward an equally long line of TV and print journalists. Days from now, this new flick — a comedy of errors in which Sandler convinces Aniston to pretend to be his wife in a wild scheme to secure the affections of Brooklyn Decker — opens up against Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never.” This weekend at the box office is setting up to be a compelling clash between teen heartthrob and established big-screen players, but Aniston is approaching the whole thing blissfully unaware — or so she liked to joke when MTV News asked her about the face-off. “Who?” she asked when the topic of Bieber came up. Sandler stepped in with a little intro to the “Never Say Never” star. “Nice little kid. He sings,” he explained. “He grew up in front of our eyes. He’s a handsome boy.” “Very handsome,” Aniston added, suddenly finding herself with a case of Bieber Fever. For moviegoers on the fence this weekend, Sandler suggested catching a double feature at the multiplex. “We don’t start fights with people. You can go to both,” he said. “We’ll go to Justin’s movie. We’ll show some respect to that kid and his family — get him some more money.” “Yeah! I hear he’s hurting,” deadpanned Aniston. Others in the cast were more forthcoming about the prospect of opening up against “Never Say Never.” “It’s hard. We’re nervous,” Decker admitted. “I love myself some Justin Bieber, so I’m not going to bash anyone who goes to see that movie. I will say I love our movie!” Dave Matthews, who co-stars as Nicole Kidman’s absurdly pretentious husband, was even more blunt. “That’s going to blow everything out of the water. Justin Bieber is going to blow everything out of the water for a few years,” he told us. “That’s what I expect — and deservedly so. What better than Bieber to blow everything out of the water? I expect nothing but my daughter’s devotion to him and I will support it absolutely.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Just Go With It.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
