Ryan Phillippe On Drake, Jay-Z And His Hip-Hop Aspirations

‘I’ve grown up a hip-hop head since I was mad young,’ ‘MacGruber’ star says. By Eric Ditzian Ryan Phillippe Photo: MTV News At first it seemed like a joke. Ryan Phillippe appeared on “Saturday Night Live” in a sketch called “Hip-Hop Kids” that had him challenging a grizzly bear to a rap battle. “The only thing that bear is going to eat is my rhymes!” he boasted. But maybe he wasn’t just playing around with the world of hip-hop. In an interview published weeks after his “SNL” gig, the 35-year-old actor claimed he’s a seriously gifted rapper. “I rap really well,” he told Women’s Health, of all people. “I can sound like Lil Wayne or Ludacris. I’m dead serious…I can spit!” [ Really? This was something MTV News had to investigate, and we got the chance when Phillippe was promoting his upcoming action-comedy, “MacGruber.” Does he really harbor hip-hop aspirations? “True,” he said. “I would like to, at some point, produce an artist down the line. It’s always been a passion of mine. I’ve grown up a hip-hop head since I was mad young.” So who’s he listening to these days to get inspiration for the day he heads into the recording studio with an up-and-coming lyricist? Turns out Phillippe just checked out one of hip-hop’s hottest acts when he made his way to Drake’s sold-out show at Los Angeles’ Club Nokia earlier this week. “[H]e was amazing,” Phillippe said. “Not only was it Drake, but he brought out Nicki Minaj. Birdman came out and Tyga and Soulja Boy.” “There’s this guy Jay Electronica that I’m really into right now,” he added, going on to name-check some of his other favorite artists. “Jay-Z. Biggie. All of ’em, everybody, the whole gang!” Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: ‘MacGruber’ Related Artists Drake Jay-Z

How Much More Money Can NBC Make Off of Betty White?

This morning, NBC announced that it plans on taking advantage of the same social networking tool that swept Betty White into Studio 8H and helped rally over 12 million people into actually watching Saturday Night Live this weekend. The network’s Facebook-compatible program, Fan It, will reward NBC viewers for talking online to their friends about NBC shows with NBC merchandise. Interested, I clicked over to NBC’ s web store just to see if there was any swag that could possibly sway me into enlisting in NBC’ s incestuous PR machine. And there it was, right next to the Biggest Loser Bath Scale ($40) and the Heroes Helix Symbol Pendant Necklace ($15): proof that NBC is still exploiting Betty White.

5 Other Award Shows Betty White Should Host

Only 72 hours after Betty White whipped Saturday Night Live into the best shape of its season, the Internet is already campaigning for the Golden Girl to host another historic television institution: the Oscars. But what Betty’s Facebook foot soldiers don’t understand is that her charisma, naughty one-liners and white-hot fan appeal could better energize some of the industry’s other tired award shows . Here are Movieline’s five pitches.

Should Betty White Host the Academy Awards?

Thanks to Betty White, the May 8 edition of Saturday Night Live posted the show’s highest ratings in 18 months. That hilarious hosting gig came about as the result of a passionate group of White supporters on Facebook, who created a group that pressured NBC to consider the actress. Now, fans of White are at it again: the Facebook page “Getting Betty White to Host the Academy Awards” has amassed over 6,000 followers since launching Sunday night. Not shabby support for an 88-year old former sitcom star. But will it enough to land her the job? Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin served as co-hosts of last year’s ceremony. Though each made us laugh a bunch of times, let’s be honest: Oscar fashion has become a hotter topic than anything related to the ceremony itself. Choosing White as next year’s MC would go a long way toward changing that. Do you think this is a good idea? Should Betty White host the Academy Awards?

Ke$ha On ‘Saturday Night Live’ Backlash: ‘I Don’t Care’

‘I had a fun time. I played laser beams,’ she says of her divisive performance. By James Montgomery Ke$ha on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — Ke$ha’s recent performance on “Saturday Night Live” was divisive, to put it mildly. Some saw her two-song set — which featured laser beams, body paint, spoken-word interludes, dancing astronauts, fireworks and an American-flag cape — as an attempt at “artistic expression” gone awry, while others praised her efforts, calling the performance “spirited” and writing pieces in her “defen$e.” Either way, it didn’t really matter to Ke$ha. As she told MTV News on Saturday at the Bamboozle festival, she’s not listening to anything anyone has to say about her these days. “If you don’t like dancing astronauts, laser beams that play music, me talking about aliens, glow-in the dark things, vocoders and a hot chick, I don’t know what to tell you,” she laughed. “My new theory is … I don’t really listen or look at anything. But I have heard through the grapevine that some people thought it sucked and some people thought it was great. [I] don’t care. I had a fun time. I played laser beams.” She did, indeed. If anything, Ke$ha didn’t think the backlash from her “SNL” appearance had anything to do with, you know, her actual performances as it did with the fact that she refuses to be categorized. In an increasingly segmented industry, she proudly — almost defiantly — sticks out like a sore thumb. A sore thumb with laser beams, of course. “I don’t use Auto-Tune. I come from a country-music-writing family, a punk-rock loving brother who gave me his records, and in a society where everything is supposed to be perfect — down to what I wear, what I look like, my body, my voice, my outfits — I’m not perfect, and I embrace it,” she said. “And I think that’s what a lot of people are finding not being up to par to, like, the standard that other people have set, but I’m just being real. And I think what I’m doing is good.” What did you think of Ke$ha’s “SNL” performance? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Ke$ha Related Artists Ke$ha

Alec Baldwin to Host Saturday Night Live Season Finale

Take that Steve Martin! Alec Baldwin told reporters at last night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner that he would be hosting the season finale of Saturday Night Live on May 15th. Fittingly, that will mark the fifteenth time he’s handled the duties, tying him with Steve Martin for the most in the show’s history. And somewhere, Steven Seagal waits by the phone for Lorne Michaels’ call. [ TV Guide ]
