50 Cent and Eminem Join Forces At SXSW

50 Cent performs his 2003 album “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” with some help from Marshall Mathers. By Nadeska Alexis 50 Cent and Eminem perform March 16 Photo: Sam Hendrick/ MTV News 50 Cent made a rare appearance in Austin, Texas on Friday night to perform his classic 2003 album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ in its entirety, and fans who were hoping for that rumored Eminem performance were not the least bit disappointed. The opening lineup at the SXSW Shady 2.0 Showcase included 50 Cent’s new G-Unit artists Paris and Kidd Kidd, plus Action Bronson, Black Hippy’s Schoolboy Q, Don Trip and Big K.R.I.T. Yelawolf was forced to cancel his appearance due to an injury but his fellow Shady Records signees, Slaughterhouse, took the stage before Fif dishing out freestyles, in addition to singles like “Hammer Dance” from their upcoming album welcome to: Our House . 50 Cent hit the stage shortly after 11pm, launching into “What Up Gangsta?” decked out in an appropriately nostalgic outfit–a camouflage bullet-proof best and Yankees cap. Throughout the week there had been whispers of an Eminem guest appearance during Fif’s set, and Marshall Mathers confirmed those rumors on the second song of the night. Fifty rolled right into “Patiently Waiting,” spitting his first verse and within seconds Em burst onto the stage, delivering the hook and his verse, casually decked out in jeans a baseball cap and his signature hoodie. At times, Fif’s commentary during the show was just as entertaining as the actual songs. “It’s been 10 years. That album sold 13 million copies,” he told the crowd, marveling at the success of Get Rich or Die Tryin.’ “The money came so fast, I couldn’t f— it up,” he added, getting some laughs from the crowd. “I was trying everything I could think of.” Tony Yayo hung by Fif’s side as the crowd continued to go wild for tracks like “Many Men,” and “In Da Club.” And although the Queens rapper was in great spirits, he still managed to get in a bit of a rant, taking aim at some of his critics. “I guess it’s not what have I done, but what have I done for you lately, is that right?” he said, the annoyance evident on his face. Still, Fif treated fans to a few more songs, including an encore performance and a freestyle over Eminem’s “Till I Collapse,” which commanded another Shady appearance on stage. “Wanksta” was the closing number of the night, and though fans stayed put, expectantly, for another few minutes, that was it folks. Wiz Khalifa Comparisons ‘Huge’ To Newbie T. Mills

‘I thought that whole signing to a major label, getting on the radio only happened in movies,’ ‘Stupid Boy’ MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman T. Mills Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: T. Mills One listen to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and that was all she wrote for young Travis Mills. The 22-year-old Riverside, California, native was so enamored by the multiplatinum rap quintet that he decided to jump into music. “The fact that they could sing and rap at the same time, integrate melody and stuff into their songs, I was blown away,” T. Mills told Mixtape Daily. Now that Mills does in fact blend rap and pop melodies in his music, some are comparing the tatted-up newcomer to Wiz Khalifa. While Mills insisted that he’s his own man, he’s also flattered by the comparison. “I think it’s definitely a compliment. I’m a huge Wiz fan,” he said. “Even for someone to put me in the same category as Wiz is a huge accomplishment for myself because I been f—in’ with Wiz a long time and he’s on top of the game right now.” T. Mills hopes to eventually occupy a similar space. When he was 17, the young rapper began recording songs on his MacBook, and by 18, he was posting his music on MySpace. In 2009, Mills performed 60 shows as part of the Vans Warped Tour, where a dance tent was his stage. He went on to sign with independent label Uprising Records, the home of his 2010 debut Ready, Fire, Aim! Although he’s still a relative unknown, his video for “Stupid Boy” has clocked 1.8 million views on YouTube. And T. Mills is just getting started. At the top of the year, he signed to Columbia Records, dropping his free LP Leaving Home with the label. “Originally, the concept for the album was a mixtape, I just wanted to put out a mixtape,” he explained. “What if we do an album that I give to my fans as gratitude?” he remembered asking the record company. While “Stupid Boy” is a party track, Mills believes he has grown since then, so on Leaving Home, he offers up more than just carefree, feel-good music. “It was my first time in a real studio, so it was my first time having access to all that stuff,” he said of his breakout single. “Before then I just recorded on my laptop. I feel like it was a good learning experience for me. It’s not who I am now but it gave me that platform.” That’s not to say that Leaving Home isn’t fun. There’s the sneakers-and-sex ode “Vans On,” where Mills sings about making love while wearing his skater kicks, for example. And to add balance, there’s also the inspirational “Smoke & Mirrors” and the cautionary “Hollywood.” With his major-label debut scheduled for a 2012 release, it seems T. Mills is well on his way. The reality of it all, though, is still a bit much for the small-town kid. “When I was 19, I didn’t think anything could happen,” he admitted. “I’m from a small town; I thought that whole signing to a major label, getting on the radio only happened in movies.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Yelawolf Drops ‘Hard White’ Remix With T.I., Slaughterhouse

‘In the Shady crew first, for me, it’s not to be the best because it ain’t gonna happen,’ Wolf tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Yelawolf Photo: MTV News The Shady Records cipher at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards was one of the year’s best hip-hop moments. YelaWolf , Slaughterhouse and Eminem dropped some of the most densely packed rhymes in recent memory. Now, with his newly released remix of “Hard White,” Gadsden, Alabama’s Wolf aims to recapture some of that magic. While Em isn’t present, T.I. ., Crooked I, Royce Da 5’9,” Joell Ortiz and Joe Budden all hold it down lyrically alongside Yela. And just like the Shady Cypher, picking a standout verse on the track could be difficult. T.I. sets it off with his usual swagger as Yela picks up with a vivid story rhyme that details a high-school shooting. Crooked, Royce, Joell and Budden all follow with tightly woven verses, boasting of their rap supremacy — much like the Shady crew did in the BET cipher. “The BET cipher, yeah, we killed it,” Wolf told MTV News last week. “That was a huge day for me, going up to Detroit and having that time with me, Slaughter and Marshall [Mathers]. That’s the first we ever had that closed environment, uninterrupted by fans.” Surely, a room full of respected MCs must get competitive, but when it comes to collaborating with his crew, Yela said he’s actually humbled to be down with such talent. “In the Shady crew, first, for me it’s not to be the best because it ain’t gonna happen,” he said modestly. “You just have to be confident in what you’re doing and know that you might get ate up at any moment by any of these dudes because they’re all so ridiculous and just be honored to be a part of it.” On November 21, Yelawolf is set to drop his debut album, Radioactive. So far we know the album boasts appearances from Eminem, Kid Rock and Gangsta Boo as well as production from the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and WillPower. Related Artists YelaWolf

‘Thor’ Star Chris Hemsworth Says There’s ‘Tension’ In ‘Avengers’

‘You’ve got big egos on these superheroes,’ he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Chris Hemsworth Photo: MTV News All of MTV News’ recent interactions with Chris Hemsworth, a.k.a. the man about to grace movie screens as the God of Thunder in “Thor,” have naturally been very focused on the highly anticipated film and all the nerdy details that come with portraying a comic book superhero. We love everything “Thor,” of course, but since the Norseman will also be appearing in the possibly even more anticipated and mysterious “Avengers” movie , we can’t help but pester everyone in the high-profile cast about the film, which just started production . So when we caught up with Hemsworth recently to expand on our ever-growing database of “Thor” information, we prodded the Aussie for some “Avengers” details. Although he couldn’t give us much, he seemed excited that his onscreen brother Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston) will be joining him on set, as well as the potential for a superhero smackdown. “[It’s great] to have my brother there. Even if we don’t get along,” Hemsworth joked. “[Hiddleston] is fantastic. [He gave] an incredible, incredible performance in the film, and he’s going to do the same in this one.” With regard to how all those superheroes will be interacting, particularly Tony Stark, Hemsworth said the environment will be tense. “There’s certainly some tension. You’ve got big egos on these superheroes,” he said. “None of them want to be told what to do or form an alliance with these people who they don’t understand anything about,” he said. “In the comic books, you see that it’s not an easy mix; that’s definitely in [the movie].” When asked if we’ll see the ensemble cast (Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Hemsworth and Hiddleston) come to blows, Hemsworth surprised us with an answer in the affirmative. “Well, you’d want it, wouldn’t you? Otherwise, why are we all there? I think it would be safe to say you can expect something like that,” he said. Bad Meets Evil Producers Tease ‘Top-Secret’ Eminem/ Royce Da 5’9" EP

‘The album is dope. That’s all I can tell you about it,’ Denaun Porter tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Eminem and Royce Da 5′ 9″ Photo: Courtesy of Tim Westwood Behind the Beats: Denaun Porter, Havoc, DJ Khalil and Bangladesh Eminem is looking to thrill hip-hop fans once again. Earlier this week, it was announced that Shady Records will release a joint EP featuring Em himself and fellow Detroit lyricist Royce Da 5’9″, under the group moniker Bad Meets Evil. But fans aren’t the only ones excited about the upcoming project. Producers Denaun Porter, Mobb Deep’s Havoc, DJ Khalil and Bangladesh have all been tapped to provide beats for the project and seem to be pretty pumped for the final product, which is set to drop June 14. “The album is dope. That’s all I can tell you about it,” said Porter when Mixtape Daily caught up with him at his Detroit studio. (Big Mixtape shout-out to photographer Patrick Daly.) The idea for a Bad Meets Evil EP first came about while Porter and Royce were working on Royce’s solo album. “We had one song and it turned into, ‘Yo, what do you think about getting Em on this record?’ ” Denuan recalled. Soon, Royce and Em were bouncing ideas back and forth, and more producers were eventually brought into the fold. Havoc, who also worked on Eminem’s Recovery, submitted a number of tracks to the Shady camp, but initially had no idea what Em and Royce were cooking up. “A couple of months ago I got hit up and they told me that they’re using another track for some future project,” he said. “So I found out along with everybody else what it was actually for, because they like to keep things top-secret.” West Coast beatsmith DJ Khalil has been a longtime fan of the Bad Meets Evil duo and has fond memories of buying Em and Royce’s first collaborative 1999 single, “Nothin’ to Do.” “I remember buying the 12-inch back in the day when I was DJ’in’,” he said. “It’s like a classic; I still have the vinyl.” Bangladesh , like Havoc, didn’t learn that he was going to be on the EP until recently. “I ain’t know that [Eminem] even had this beat, I didn’t even know he liked the beat. I ain’t know I was gonna be on this EP until probably like two weeks ago.” The producers couldn’t say much in terms of song detail, but Bangladesh did confirm that his track has a vocal sample in the hook, while Havoc said his beat has an eerie feel and sounds like, “You’re going down a dark hall with a whole bunch of monks just screamin’ at you.” Denuan, an original member of D12 and a longtime friend and collaborator of both Em and Royce, is perhaps the most thrilled about the upcoming Bad Meets Evil project. “I was happy to see it because I thought the songs that they did back in the day was dope.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Yelawolf Takes It Home For ‘Pop The Trunk’ Video

Shady Records rapper talks to ‘RapFix Live’ on Thursday (March 10). By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Yelawolf Photo: MTV News Most young artists dream about life on the road, touring and rubbing shoulders with stars backstage. But for Yelawolf, that was an existence he experienced early in his life. His mother, who he describes as “super rock and roll,” dated a stage designer, and soon her son found himself meeting Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon and Randy Travis, among others. “I definitely saw pieces of this life early,” Yela told “RapFix Live” on Thursday (March 10). That authenticity is what still powers the upstart Alabama rapper. His video for “Pop the Trunk” personifies his gritty appeal. He recruited his actual parents and hometown friends to star in the clip. “We took a camera to Gadsden, my hometown, and we shot this video with no script,” he explained. “I went to the locations that I was talking about and I got the people that I was talking about to play themselves.” Recently, Yelawolf aligned his talents with Eminem, inking a deal to join his Shady Records . The move bolstered the label’s roster, as he was also joined by underground supergroup Slaughterhouse. The move re-ignites the collective that’s also home to 50 Cent and D-12. “It’s a huge deal being able to have a mentor in someone who’s done this for so long and been through so much,” Yelawolf said of joining the team. “And also artistically, just pushing me to be better. Being around them dudes will make you better naturally. So, we’re excited, man.” Share your comments about Yelawolf below! Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Yelawolf Related Artists YelaWolf

Kevin Smith Defends ‘Red State’ Road Show

While critics bemoan high ticket prices, director says his ‘fanbase is already paying 60, 65 bucks to see me stand there by myself.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kevin Smith Photo: MTV News People were pissed off. Kevin Smith had seemed to indicate that he was going to hold a one-of-a-kind auction at the Sundance Film Festival last month, selling the rights to “Red State” to the highest bidder. Instead, after the genre-bending, horror-meets-thriller-meets-buddy-comedy flick premiered, Smith announced he was bypassing the traditional distribution model and releasing the movie himself. And people were even more pissed when they found out what that strategy would entail — namely, $60 or more to see “Red State” as Smith took it on a road show across the country. As the writer/director himself put it during a live-stream interview with MTV News, “I saw a lot of people saying online, ’60 bucks to see a movie? F— him!’ ” But those people, Smith argued, are missing the point. He and his producing pals are seeking a way to avoid getting sucked down the Hollywood marketing rabbit hole and instead bring the movie directly to their fans — building buzz along the way — before the film hit theaters nationwide in the fall. The 15-city tour will include both a screening of the film and a talk by Smith, akin to the shows he’s long staged on college campuses and other venues. “Fanbase is already paying 60, 65 bucks to see me stand there by myself, sweating, fatty, go like, ‘I got thrown off a plane once,’ ” Smith laughed, referencing the Southwest Airlines incident in which he was chucked from a plane for being overweight. Smith originally wanted to kick off the tour at Carnegie Hall, the same venue he sold out for a talk last year. But the venue was already booked, so they settled on another iconic New York theater: Radio City Music Hall. The venue holds almost 6,000 people, and while Smith doesn’t expect to be able to fill all those seats, he’ll be able to show off the film in a high-profile setting and start to pay back his investors. To all his detractors, who scoff at the idea of $60 for a movie and talk, Smith has one thing to say: “Wait till October and you’ll see it for, like, 10 bucks in a multiplex.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Eminem/Slaughterhouse Deal Was ‘A Long Time Coming,’ Joell Ortiz Says

‘We’re four solo artists first, so the deal took longer than we expected,’ he tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Ade Mangum Slaughterhouse’s Joell Ortiz Photo: MTV News According to Joell Ortiz, one-fourth of the Slaughterhouse crew, the collective took so long to close their deal with Eminem because he, Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9″ and Crooked I operate as solo artists. “It’s been a long time coming,” Ortiz said of the Shady Records deal. “We’re four solo artists first, so the deal took longer than we expected. We had to get contracts and things in order and things of that nature. But I believe it’s been in the works for a little over a year, and it finally came to life a few weeks back, and everybody is excited, including Eminem. And we’re looking forward to a powerhouse year in 2011.” Last month, Slaughterhouse finally announced their signing, after news of the union had been in the air for over a year. The deal was made public via XXL. The four MCs graced the magazine’s cover with solo upstart rapper Yelawolf, who also joined Team Shady. Em christened the signings as the start of a new regime. “Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse, it’s kinda phase two of Shady,” Eminem explained in a statement. “It’s the new generation of Shady Records, and as we’re trying to rebuild our label, it’s exciting for hip-hop, and with all of these forces coming together and with what everybody’s capable of on the mic, it’s gonna be fun.” In a radio interview shortly after the news broke, Crooked I commented on his new deal with Slaughterhouse, saying the underground group gets a larger platform by affiliating with Eminem. “I look at it like, for hip-hop on a whole, to have four dudes come together and represent different regions and represent hip-hop to the fullest, and get a deal to where we could travel into the mainstream and take our music to a bigger stage, I think it’s good for hip-hop,” he said.
