Just ask Mary J Blige , whose purported collaboration with Nicki Minaj on a song called “Feel Inside” prematurely surfaced online a few weeks ago. Soon after the leak, Blige’s camp revealed that, while the duo are working on a track together for the singer’s new album, My Life Too: The Journey Continues (dropping October 4), the song that hit the blogosphere was the result of two different studio sessions and not the real thing. MTV News recently caught up with Blige to get her take on the leak, and she was none too pleased. “I was pissed about the leaking of the Nicki Minaj and Mary J Blige record, because that’s not fair and people shouldn’t do that,” she said bluntly. “But I’m over it. We move on. We’re going to make more hot music.” Asked what other special guests can be expected on the forthcoming project, MJB remained coy, saying she didn’t want to reveal any other featured collaborators until “maybe a month from now” to make sure everything is “etched in stone.” While Blige didn’t dish too many details about her and Minaj’s collabo, songwriter Andrea Martin (Melanie Fiona, Leona Lewis), the woman who penned the tune, did offer some insight into the Harajuku Barbie-assisted track. “It was a surprise to know that Nicki Minaj jumped on the song and nobody wanted to tell me. I was like ‘What’s going on? What’s going on?’ ” Martin told MTV News. “It’s just such a great thing. I’ve always wanted to work with Mary J. Blige, and I finally got the chance to, and it was a good time for me to prove myself that I can write songs for you, baby.” For fans who are still waiting for the finalized collabo to surface, they’ll be happy to hear that the song is tentatively scheduled to be one of the project’s first singles, with MJB’s camp already scouting a video director for the song. Bruce Beresford-Redman, the former TV producer accused of killing his wife outside a resort in Cancun, has been ordered back to Quintana Roo, Mexico to stand trial on charges of aggravated homicide. The incident took place in November, when the body of Bruce’s wife, Monica, washed up in a sewer system near the hotel where she had been staying with her family. The cause of death was asphyxiation. Bruce’s attorneys claimed the police were too quick to charge their client and lacked any physical evidence. But United States prosecutors say fellow guests heard screams emanating from the couple’s room and that detectives subsequent discovered blood spatter in the bathroom and in other areas of the room. The ex- Survivor producer has been behind bars in Los Angeles, but will soon be moved to Mexico. He faces up to 30 years in prison if found guilty.
Nicki Minaj says she was struck in the face by a male acquaintance yesterday. But the artist does not want to press any charges. Here’s what went down: Minaj and an unidentified man were allegedly arguing poolside at the Palomar Hotel in Dallas. As the verbal sparring intensified, the man left for his hotel room, the singer told an employee to call the cops and then she followed the man back inside. Once there, she says he hit her in the lower lip. When the police arrived, Minaj explained what happened but said she did not want to press charges. She added that the opponent was not her boyfriend. Demi Lovato premiered the single “Skyscraper” today on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. That was her big move professionally. Personally, though, the 18-year old gave fans an open look into the struggles over the last few months, which landed her in rehab and caused her to admit that she’s bipolar . Demi Lovato on Ryan Seacrest “I just had so much growing up to do… I ended up doing things that I regret to this day,” Lovato said about the inner turmoil that led to her attacking dancer Alex Welch . What was the most difficult time for the singer? “Spending Christmas in treatment was really, really difficult,” she said. “I just remember sometimes sitting there and being like, ‘I had so much just six months ago, and here I am in a treatment center. What has my life become? How did I let it get to this point?'” Demi says she was never suicidal, but times grew “really dark.” Lovato recorded “Skyscraper” soon before entering rehab. She says of the experience: “I just sat there and I just cried my eyes out, I was almost doubled over with emotion… it was crazy. I tried to re-record it but, it didn’t have that same emotion and that same almost cry for help that I had when I first recorded it.” Look for the music video to come out this week.
‘What Doesn’t Kill You,’ ‘I Forgive You’ and ‘Dumb + Dumb =U’ hit the Internet over the weekend, following earlier leak of ‘Let Me Down.’ By Gil Kaufman Kelly Clarkson Photo: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images Kelly Clarkson fans got a big sneak preview of the singer’s upcoming album over the weekend when three tracks reportedly slated for her fifth effort leaked onto the Internet. The leaks came less than a week after another never-before-heard song, the rocking “Let Me Down,” popped up online amid rumors that it could be the first single from the still untitled follow-up to 2009’s return to form All I Ever Wanted . Though the audio tracks were quickly pulled down, a number of sites that got a listen described the songs as very different from the angsty “Let Me Down.” One, “What Doesn’t Kill You,” reportedly features the lines, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger/ Stand a little taller/ Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone.” The Idolator blog described that song as a Pink-style empowerment anthem. Another leaked song, titled “Forgive You,” is a peace offering to a person from her past, in which Clarkson sings, “We were just a couple of kids trying to figure out how to live, doing it our way/ No shame, no blame, ’cause the damage is done.” She’s back to her old tricks in “Dumb + Dumb = U,” a slap at an unnamed ex who clearly rubbed her the wrong way. The song reportedly has the same pop-rock vibe as Clarkson’s smash hit “Since U Been Gone.” In the latest effort, she gets her revenge in lyrics such as “It ain’t rocket science/ I may not be Einstein, but I know that dumb plus dumb equals you!” A spokesperson for Clarkson could not be reached for comment at press time to confirm the legitimacy of the songs or if they are slated to be included on the album. According to an update from Clarkson earlier this year, the album is due in the fall and she recorded the final tune in late February. Songwriter Claude Kelly told MTV News in March that the delays in the album’s release are tied to efforts by Clarkson’s label to ensure the album is set up correctly. “They want to make sure that the arena is clean for Kelly Clarkson’s return , ’cause when she comes back, she always comes back pretty big,” he said. “They want to make sure when her first single comes out, there’s nothing out there that’s competing with it. ‘We liked working together, so I can see it working,’ Joe tells MTV News of his ‘See No More’ partner. Well, he’s grown up a lot since then. He chopped off his hair and, on his first-ever solo album , Fast Life, he’s opening up about falling in and out of love. And in August, the middle JoBro turns a very grown-up 22. So, what does he have planned for the big day? “I don’t have any birthday plans yet, actually,” he told MTV News recently. “I don’t even know where we’re going to be because we’re trying to figure out a touring situation right now and it either looks like I’m going on my tour, my own tour, or opening up for somebody, supporting somebody on tour.” While his plans are still to be determined, he was sure of one thing: “Wherever I am, there will be a party and it will be fun.” Speaking of tours, Joe was once rumored to be hitting the road with Britney Spears on her now all-female Femme Fatale trek . Those plans didn’t pan out, of course, and now he’s looking to hook up with someone else on the road. Joe even shared his dream tourmate with us. “My dream list, wow … I mean, doing a tour with Chris would be cool,” he said of Chris Brown, who helped the singer pen his first single, “See No More.” “I feel like, musically, we both have the same sounds and we liked working together, so I can see it working.” Joe’s album drops in September , and he told us that he’s not holding back on it. “It was scary in the beginning,” he said of doing a solo LP, “just because I knew this is my one opportunity to show people my journal: the good and bad of every relationship I’ve been in, you know, [and] what I look for [in relationships],” he explained.
