Fonzworth Bentley Talks ‘Heavy’ New Song ‘Fireside Chat’

‘I did this song for Black History Month,’ Atlanta MC says of the track. By Shaheem Reid Fonzworth Bentley Photo: MTV Fonzworth Bentley says “knowledge is the new currency” — he wanted to get rebellious and deep on his new song and video “Fireside Chat.” President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his fireside chats to the country in the ’30s and ’40s; Bentley’s “Fireside Chat” talks to the hip-hop community. “It’s kinda heavy for some heads,” Bentley said. “Some kids, it’s gonna be heavy for them. They don’t wanna be reminded they have a responsibility.” Bentley’s song stresses education and community responsibility and calls for more substantial hip-hop music. The video shows montages of images ranging from lynchings of young black men, Rosa Parks and Rush Limbaugh up to the protest in the wake of the Sean Bell shooting. “I did this song for Black History Month and possibly for my EP,” Bentley explained. “Originally I wanted to put it out at the top of Black History Month. I was thinking through things. I was like, Black History Month — first of all, it’s the shortest month. Second of all, we’re gung-ho the first couple of weeks, then towards the end, you don’t hear nothing. Have you heard anything about Black History Month this week? Not at all. I just think that, ultimately for us, in this generation, it’s a time to really reflect and learn something new about yourself. I said if we could just do that, I think that you would be doing yourself a good service. If learn about yourself, you’re going to do what it is you’re supposed to do. You’ll understand you’re standing on the shoulders of somebody else. “The piece was basically a fireside chat to African-Americans, but it was to also hip-hop. Hip-hop was a completely new genre of music. It’s like someone saying, ‘Go home and create a completely new genre of music.’ What? We created a completely new genre of music that is beautiful, ultimately to express ourselves about what was going on in our communities because we didn’t feel we had a voice … we said things to empower the community. To me, that has been missed. The most important words in that piece to me is ‘There’s a lot of folks that die for these rights/ We act like we don’t know it,’ which is at the beginning. Then at the end it is ‘These stripes and stars used to evoke better bars.’ That’s not deniable.” Fonz says he has more inspiring songs in his vaults. “Oh yeah. I went to [Morehouse College], the same school as Martin Luther King Jr,” he said. “I went to the same school as Spike Lee. I went to the same school and Maynard Jackson, the first African-American mayor of Atlanta.” Bentley, signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label, said he plans to work with ‘Ye in Hawaii very soon. He’s putting The Cool Outrageous Fingerprint EP this summer and his full-length C.O.L.O.R.S. is due later this year. Related Artists Fonzworth Bentley

Roscoe Dash Says ‘All The Way Turnt Up’ Is ‘New Age Crunk’

‘Roscoe, he goes hard,’ Soulja Boy Tell’em says. By Shaheem Reid Roscoe Dash Photo: MTV News Roscoe Dash’s “All the Way Turnt Up” is so hot that artists such as Ludacris and Lupe Fiasco had to jump on it and put it on their mixtapes — but Soulja Boy Tell’em openly lobbied via Twitter to appear on the record officially. “When I first heard the ‘All the Way Turnt Up’ song, Roscoe reminded me of myself,” Soulja said recently on the Atlanta set of the video. “I was like, ‘That sounds like a “Turn My Swag On” times 10. I gotta get on that. Roscoe, he goes hard.” Dash, who is a new signee to Soulja Boy’s recording home Interscope Records, obliged the request. “The definition of ‘All the Way Turnt Up’ is a new age crunk — a 2010 crunk,” said Dash, whose stage surname was inspired by the fastest of “The Incredibles.” “I’m not afraid to be different, or do things other people would be afraid to do or do different because they’re afraid of what somebody else might say. I don’t have that thought process.” “Turnt Up” went through some controversy last year when Dash, born Jeffrey Johnson Jr., had guest stars Travis Porter on the record. They put the song out on their mixtape and fans thought the record was actually Travis Porter featuring ATL (Dash’s former moniker) instead of the other way around. The trio have been dropped from the song, as Roscoe is trying to forge his own brand. “When I heard the beat I said, ‘I have to make something different than anything that’s out right now,’ ” Dash explained. “Roscoe Dash is somebody who’s versatile and has a big wide body of different sounds. I just run with it and make good music.” The video for “All the Way Turnt Up” premieres soon and Dash’s debut album Ready Set Go! is slated for a May 11 release. Kanye West Didn’t Want To Be In ‘Coldest Winter’ Video

‘He’s in that place in his life where he just wants to make art,’ director Nabil Elderkin says. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Stefania D’Alessandro/ Getty Images Kanye West is a bold personality and presence, so when director Nabil Elderkin and the rapper decided to film the “Coldest Winter” video they both agreed on one thing: to leave the 808s & Heartbreak star out of the clip. The video, which premiered on Monday via iTunes, features an ominous woman in white, running throughout a dark, wintry forest populated by scary Grim Reaper-like characters. And West is nowhere in sight. Elderkin didn’t even have to sell the rapper on that concept. “You know what, the funny thing is, he didn’t want to be in it,” Elderkin told MTV News. “I wasn’t even gonna put him in it. He didn’t want to be in ‘Paranoid,’ to be honest. There was more Kanye in ‘Paranoid’ [originally], and I took him out. He’s just cool right now with putting out visuals that fit the song without having to be in it. I think he’s in that place in his life where right now he just wants to make art.” When Elderkin — who has collaborated with West on “Welcome to Heartbreak” and “Paranoid” — presented the rapper with this latest idea, it wasn’t in treatment form. The director simply told West about the concept, and the rapper was onboard almost immediately. Elderkin said he feared overshadowing the song, one of the most personal on the emotional 808s & Heartbreak, which was inspired in part by West’s mother passing and a failed relationship. Instead, he wanted the visuals to complement the music, which features West’s eerie production and the haunting refrain: “Goodbye, my friend, will I ever love again.” Much like ‘Ye’s “Flashing Lights” clip , this one doesn’t have a linear plot. “Sometimes I don’t want to get too literal with videos, like, ‘This is what this is suppose to mean, and that’s what that is suppose to mean,’ ” he said. “I wanted to leave it open to interpretation. I want people to get whatever they want out of it.” What do you think of Kanye West’s “Coldest Winter” video? Would you rather have seen him in the new video? Let us know in the comments below. Jermaine Dupri Says New Janet Jackson Song Is ‘A Good Record’

‘Y’all haven’t heard her sound like this in a long time,’ producer says of Jackson’s tune for the ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ soundtrack. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage Jermaine Dupri recently told MTV News he had produced a new Janet Jackson song for the upcoming Tyler Perry film in which the singer also stars, “Why Did I Get Married Too?” According to the So So Def boss, the track is slated to be the first single from the movie’s soundtrack — the film is scheduled to arrive in theaters April 2. “I watched the movie with [Jackson and Perry] and it’s incredible,” Dupri said. “I’m not married but married people go through what I seen in this movie. I think Tyler hit it on the head again. But the song is perfect for the movie and it’s a good record.” The producer was tight-lipped about the track, only revealing that the title was “Nothing.” He promised, however, that the song will showcase a Jackson that fans haven’t seen in a while. “I can say this — y’all haven’t heard her sound like this in a long time,” he teased. Jackson is currently working on her next album, one that Rodney Jerkins told MTV News would be more emotional that her past efforts. “You gotta understand, she lost her brother,” Jerkins said. “She was in a relationship for seven years [with Jermaine Dupri] that’s over now. There’s things that she told me that I didn’t even realize. You know, certain [things] like self-esteem that I didn’t even realize that she dealt with for years that, you know. … She’s working on her book and she’ll deal with that in her book, but also in songs, certain songs we’re dealing with that head on. And sometimes it can be a touchy subject for us to even go into, and I kinda had to persuade her, ‘Let’s just go, let’s talk about that.’ And she’s been doing it, and she’s a pro about it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Why Did I Get Married Too?” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
