Usher’s ‘OMG’ Is MTV News’ #1 Song Of 2010!

Club smash, featuring will.i.am, tops our list of the Top 25 Songs of the year. By James Montgomery Usher Photo: Getty Images MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 has reached an end. We’ve already counted down the rest, and now it’s time to get to the best: Usher’s “OMG,” the song that perfectly sums up the past 12 months of popular music — and makes you wanna move until you can’t move no more. If 2010 proved anything, it’s that a DJ really can save your life … or at least get you to #1 on the Hot 100. After years of staring at each other from across the room, hip-hop, pop and R&B all decided to finally get in bed with dance music, and the results weren’t always pretty, but they were certainly successful. To date, only 17 songs have made it to the top spot of Billboard ‘s singles chart in 2010, and nearly two-thirds of them — from Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” to Far East Movement’s “Like a G6” — were, in some way, dance songs. In that regard, no song better sums up 2010 pop music quite like Usher’s “OMG,” the dance song to end all dance songs. Sure, it may not have matched the swagger of Kanye West’s “Power,” the snarl of Rick Ross’ “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)” or the inbox-clogging spread of Cee Lo’s “F— You,” but it didn’t have to. None of those songs went to #1, after all. “OMG” did. Twice. Even among songs that managed to snag that top spot — Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” B.o.B and Bruno Mars’ “Nothin’ on You” — “OMG” stood out from the pack, mostly because of its pedigree. It’s not a stretch to say that any of those tracks could’ve (and probably would’ve) been #1 in any other year; “OMG” could only have done it in 2010, because it was crafted to do nothing else. No other song this year was as of the moment, as singular and shiny and downright undeniable. There’s a reason it was named on more ballots than any other song on our countdown and justly takes the title of MTV News’ #1 Song of 2010. And while all that is important, it’s largely beside the point. “OMG” is the kind of song that truly defies deep inspection, because it’s not exactly headphone music. Rather, it was made for the clubs, designed to envelop you on the dance floor and not let go until the final “oh-ohh-oh-ooh-oh.” And in that regard, it succeeds in spades. It is a masterful melding of R&B, and Euro dance, all icy synths and handclaps, starbursts and stutters and sing-along chants. It ebbs and flows, stops and starts, pumps and preens. Simply put, you cannot listen to it without moving in some way. (MTV’s Dee Caligiuri, who voted on our countdown, probably put it best one night when she declared: “There are so many dances you can do to it!”) And if that’s not the definition of a success, well, then I don’t know what is. A large portion of the credit for “OMG” has to go to will.i.am, who not only produced the track (I know!), but was smart enough to see this whole dance thing coming when he teamed up with producer David Guetta last year. Those songs — “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling” — were, of course, massive, but neither of them are as good as this. Given full control, Will goes off the deep end, cramming the song with every dance trick in the book — and probably some new ones he just invented on the spot. And Usher, whose career, truth be told, was sort of in need of a shot in the arm, is the beneficiary. He floats and gloats above the mix, suave and cocksure, knowing that he is exactly the right man at the right time. That time, of course, had to be 2010. Because in a year when so many big-name acts embraced the DJ, he flat-out did it better than any of them. “OMG” represents the peak of the dance-pop era in which we live, a song as undeniable as it is of the moment. We can only speculate as to what next year will bring, but there’s really no denying that, as 2010 comes to a close, Usher stands above all else, reinvigorated and ready for more. It’s enough to make you say “Oh My God,” really. How does Usher’s “OMG” rank among the year’s best songs? Let us know in the comments! MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 have all been counted down. First "Monster" Listen: Michael Jackson & 50 Cent!

A new track from Michael Jackson’s posthumous, forthcoming album has just leaked. This time, the late King of Pop teams up with 50 Cent on a “Monster” track. Only literally. That’s the name of the song, which is actually mediocre. At least in our opinion. The first two releases, ” Breaking News ” and ” Hold My Hand ” (featuring Akon) are superior. You tell us, though, after listening here: Michael Jackson Feat. 50 Cent: Monster What do you think of MJ and 50’s “Monster”?

Eminem’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Is MTV News’ #9 Song Of 2010

Rihanna collaboration topped the charts and got real, landing it high on our Top 25 songs of the year. By James Montgomery Eminem Photo: John Shearer/ Getty Images Last week, MTV News kicked off our countdown of the Top 25 Songs of 2010, an all-encompassing list that has already included the likes of Rick Ross and Robyn, Lady Gaga and Kanye West , to name just a few. Now, we’re pulling the curtain back on our pick for #9 … Eminem and Rihanna’s massive “Love the Way You Lie,” a song that resonated with both fans and critics alike, mostly because it was unafraid to get unspeakably real. For more than a decade now, Eminem has always operated with a safety net: his Slim Shady alter ego. Slim says and does the kind of things that normal people can’t (or don’t), dealing almost exclusively in wanton acts of violence and/or depravity and never, ever apologizing for any of it. At times, the act has been so convincing that you’re not quite sure if Em is Slim Shady, which is how he’s been able to get away with songs like “Kim” (in which he stuffs his wife in the trunk of his car), “Kill You” (where he rapes his own mother) and even “3 a.m.” (the one where he goes on a pill-addled murder spree). Because of Slim, no matter how brutal or unflinching Eminem’s subject matter, his fans have always been able to laugh it away, even if, deep down inside, that darkness still terrifies them. “That isn’t really Eminem,” the logic goes. “It’s Slim Shady. It’s different. ” But in 2010, Eminem changed things up. He got sober, he got serious and — for the most part — he shelved the Slim Shady character altogether. It was a bold, if not necessary, move, and the end result was Recovery, an album that has wowed critics and fans alike, thanks in no small part to the complete absence of that alter ego. Instead, we all got to see Em as his most honest, his most brutal … and, in the case of “Love the Way You Lie,” his darkest. On the surface, “Lie” is an unblinking, unyielding examination of a relationship gone horribly awry, a rapidly descending tale of two lovers who cannot live without each other, and seem destined to die because of it. It’s a masterwork of unfiltered angst, full of violence (both real and imagined) and threats (or promises), and the fact that it resonated to such a degree with the record-buying public — it was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks — is both a testament to its power and more terrifying than a dozen songs about stuffing someone in a trunk. But no matter how you choose to analyze the song and its success, you cannot deny the fact that the song works mostly because it’s so terribly real. When Em screams “Next time/ There will be no next time,” you can’t help but believe that he’s telling the truth, no matter how frightening that may be, and you get the creeping suspicion that he’s actually shouted that threat to someone very close to him at some point in his past. Perhaps even more terrifying is the fact that he follows that line up with “I apologize.” You cannot write a song any better than that, because that’s how this kind of thing happens in real life. And though she might seem an odd choice to sing the hook, Rihanna more than holds her own against Eminem’s bluster. She returns serve, her rage and heartbreak are equally as tangible as his … once again, because you get the feeling (well, or you know for a fact) that she’s been in situations like this before. Sadly, there’s no substitute for experience. “Love the Way You Lie” is about many things, most of which are very bad. But it’s also a testament to Eminem’s courage and willingness to put it all on the line, his gifted skills as a storyteller and his deft ability to turn his gaze inward. For the first time, he sheds Slim Shady and walks the tightrope without the aid of a safety net, a balancing act that’s scarier — and more thrilling — than a dozen ax murders. For better or worse. Where would you place Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” among the top songs of 2010? Let us know in the comments! MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 countdown continues. Katy Perry Gets Patriotic With ‘California Gurls,’ ‘Firework’ For ‘VH1 Divas’

The pop star traded whipped cream for stars and stripes as she saluted the troops. By Aly Semigran Katy Perry performs “Firework” during “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images It was that fitting Katy Perry did a live version her joyously inescapable summer smash “California Gurls” for the service men and women at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops,” and then closed the night out with “Firework.” Earlier in the show, Perry performed “California Gurls,” the song not only propelled her to the top of the charts in 2010 (it spent six consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100) and helped her snag one of her four Grammy nominations earlier this week (“Gurls” garnered Perry and her musical partner Snoop Dogg a nom for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals), but it’s an unconventional love letter to the very state where the show was taking place. (Click here to see photos from “VH1 Divas Salute The Troops” .) The never-subtle singer left her whipped-cream-shooting bra at home (perhaps it’s not terribly useful in combat?) and arrived onstage via a stars-and-stripes parachute dressed head to toe in red, white, and blue attire. Perry’s onstage antics while performing “Gurls” on previous shows, like the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, have always been fitting of the bubblegum pop ditty, and her “Divas” set was no different. Snoop may have been regrettably MIA, but Perry had a set of scantily clad backup singers and dancers to help elevate her. Despite a slight crack in her voice during the song’s rising “Ohhh-oh-oh”s, “California Gurls” still got a warm reception and melted more than a few popsicles in San Diego. For Sunday’s show, Perry also found time to recall ’40s glam with Keri Hilson and Jennifer Nettles for a cover of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” and ’80s pop with Nicki Minaj for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” But that was hardly the end of Perry’s marathon evening, as the pop star did another, final outfit change to perform “Firework.” Looking rather Jessica Rabbit-esque in a bombshell-red, sparkly dress paired long red gloves, Perry tapped into the emotional tune, which took on a whole new meaning with this particular crowd. While the song is less an ode to patriotism as it is to individuality, lyrics like “Just own the night/ Like the 4th of July,” and “Come on, let your colors burst” turned out to be unexpectedly apropos of the event. The show-stopper felt even more patriotic when paired with the footage of, naturally, fireworks exploding in the background. Not one to fizzle out, Perry (who was once again joined by backup singers and dancers) eventually had onstage pyrotechnics and actual fireworks lighting up the night sky. “Firework” which currently resides at the #1 spot on digital download charts, also feels like Perry’s most personal single of her Teenage Dream album to date, something that was quite evident in her final, shining performance of the night. 50 Cent Calls Michael Jackson Collabo The ‘2010 Version’ Of ‘Thriller’

Rapper reflects on ‘Monster,’ revealing that the duo did not record together. By James Dinh 50 Cent Photo: Getty Images/Jakubaszek In less than two weeks, Michael Jackson ‘s first posthumous album, Michael, will hit stores and include a string of unreleased MJ tracks. The 10-song set includes a collaboration between the iconic performer and 50 Cent . In a candid interview that appeared on MJJackson.com , 50 Cent reminiscences about how the song “Monster” came about. “I didn’t have the opportunity to physically be in Michael Jackson’s presence,” Fif said. “But my DJ, Whoo Kid, he had the opportunity to actually meet Mike, because he was interested in working with me and he said that he had something he wanted me to actually hear, a song he created. He thought it would be perfect for us to collaborate on and then he put me on the telephone.” While 50 has teamed up with a slew of artists in the past, he said the Jackson opportunity was unlike any other. “I don’t usually get nervous, because I really don’t care about a lot of the artists,” he said. “But Mike is special. He’s different. I don’t know how to explain it.” After the shocking news of Jackson’s sudden death, Fif received a call to come into the studio and perform his portion of the track. Once in the studio, the rapper worked with producer Teddy Riley (Jackson’s Dangerous ) on the song. “When I sat down and listened to the actual song, I was excited. I said, ‘This is the 2010 version of “Thriller,” ‘ ” the rapper recalled. A snippet of the track (minus 50) reportedly leaked onto the Internet just a few days ago. Despite not being able to actually record the track with Jackson, 50 Cent intended to make his mark on the song. “I missed an opportunity to be on a record not just with a great artist, but a legend,” he lamented. “So I wanted more, and I made adjustments to my cadence so I don’t sound like I sound on music that people have previously heard from me, because I’m adjusting to the production.” While not everyone has been excited about the posthumous release, Fif thinks it will be welcomed by most. “I think this album is more special,” he said. “It’ll be embraced different because it’s the last of really great material that Mike created, so I think people will want it to go in their actual collection to go in their Michael Jackson material. It’s a great example of how the art and the material will last longer than we will.” Last July, the MC told MTV News that he was inspired by a piece of artwork featuring the legendary performer for the cover of his Forever King mixtape . “When Michael Jackson passed, there was a piece of artwork that had ‘King of Pop, King of Rap’ with me and his pictures,” he said.” “That’s what gave me the concept of the artwork. There’s a real human skull that’s got diamonds embedded in it.” Are you excited to hear the 50 Cent and MJ collabo? Tell us below! Amber Portwood Welcomes Home Baby Leah!

Amber Portwood and her baby Leah have reunited. The two-year-old was under Indiana’s control (as in the State of Indiana) after a very turbulent period, but officials returned her to the Teen Mom star Monday. “Leah is moving into Amber’s new home, where Amber had her daughter’s bedroom all set up,” a source says. “Amber is so excited to have Leah back!” LEAH’S HOME : Mother and daughter are together once again . Just last week, we learned that Leah became a ward of the state, meaning decisions over where she lives falls to a judge and a government agency. Portwood and ex-fiance Gary Shirley had earlier agreed that Leah was better off living with him for the time being. Child Protective Services agreed. “It was safer for her to stay at Gary’s because of all the photographers outside my house,” Amber Portwood , who lives in Anderson, Ind., explained. The star, who’s battling serious anger issues, said living without Leah was “the lowest of the low. Every night she’s been saying, ‘Where’s Mommy?'” On November 18, Portwood was charged by Anderson police for attacking Shirley in front of Leah; she is faced with two felony battery charges . Now she says she’s picking up what’s left of her life – or at least trying: “I’m trying to put the pieces back together,” she said . “I have to get better so when I get my baby back, she sees her mom as happy as can be.” Here’s wishing her the best in that difficult, ongoing quest.

Swizz Beatz, Diddy-Dirty Money Get Their ‘Ass On The Floor’

Swizzy drops Monster Monday track days after previewing new Haute Living cuts on Ustream. By Mawuse Ziegbe Swizz Beatz Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Following in the tradition of fellow production star Kanye West, Swizz Beatz has conjured up Monster Mondays to dole out free joints on the Web featuring some of his celebrity pals. His latest offering, “Ass on the Floor,” corrals Diddy-Dirty Money into the mix for a slickly atmospheric dance-floor-filler. Reinvigorating the rapid-fire drums made famous by Major Lazer’s 2009 party must-have “Pon De Floor,” Swizzy adds the spacey sheen of synth chords as the Dirty Money ladies croon about drowning their sorrows over a frustratingly volatile relationship. “You’re the love of my life/ But you hurt my heart twice/ Now I’m drunker than a motherf—– / Trying to find my way back to your heart you motherf—–,” Kalenna sings. Production duties aside, Swizzy plays hypeman, commanding the lovelorn souls to forget the drama and “get ya ass on the floor/ Them haters can’t tell you nothing!” The track’s amped-up rhythm is somewhat at odds with the melancholy lyrics, as Diddy also laments potent heartbreak in his verse. “That love’s gon’ get ya, motherf—– / Smoke weed, listening to Sade/ I left my pain in Paris/ Why can’t you see sh– my way?” Diddy spits. The vibe of the song definitely stays on track with the naked emotion the Bad Boy mogul promised on the trio’s long-delayed effort, Last Train to Paris. “One of the things we’re trying to represent is emotion,” Diddy told MTV News last year. “Not being afraid to show emotion on record. A lot of records out right now — no disrespect to them, but they’re all surface. It’s about what people have or a dance. All our records are gonna be about love, feelings and emotion. Last Train to Paris is a love story and the most vulnerable album I’ve ever been involved in. It’s raw emotion — you get a feeling, a vibe.” In addition to his Monster Mondays series, Swizzy has been staying busy in the studio and recently previewed some joints from his upcoming Haute Living album on Ustream. Tracks included a thumping midtempo banger featuring Chris Brown, and another song boasting the breathy vocals of his new wife Alicia Keys . Katy Perry Sets Off ‘Firework’ At AMAs

Singer sparkles during-high energy American Music Awards set on Sunday. By James Dinh Katy Perry performs at the American Music Awards on Sunday Photo: Kevin Winter/AMA2010/Getty Images/DCP Katy Perry has already revealed her inspiration for her latest single, “Firework.” But the pop star took the track a step further during a high-energy performance that included sparklers at the American Music Awards on Sunday (November 21). As the number began, a children’s choir crooned the chorus of the empowering tune. It was Perry, however, who really made an entrance, descending from a star suspended from the ceiling. Dressed in a furry red dress (one she later ripped off to reveal another ensemble), the “Teenage Dream” singer walked to the front of the stage as the choir dispersed and backup dancers joined her onstage. Meanwhile, backdrop screens showed a slew of fireworks as Perry’s dancers shot sparklers through hand-held gadgets. The pop star ended the visual light-fest on a high note, singing the last few notes of “Firework” while her dancers lifted her high up in the air. Perry is also nominated in multiple AMA categories , including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Album and Artist of the Year. The newly married Mrs. Brand teased the performance via Twitter a few days ago, writing, “Just finished AMA rehearsal… I am so excited about this remix performance. It’s going to be a mixture of adorable & gorgeous. #AMA’S.” Perry spoke to MTV News about writing the inspirational track, her third single from Teenage Dream. “I think that’s why I wrote it, is because I really believe in people and I believe that people have a spark to be a firework,” she said. “It’s just up to them, and a lot of times it’s only us that’s standing in the way of reaching our goals, fulfilling our destinies, being the best version of who we possibly can be, so that’s why I wrote it.” What did you think of Katy’s sparkling performance? Justin Bieber Gets Serious With ‘Pray’ At AMAs

Teen star performed his new ballad at Sunday’s American Music Awards. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs at the 2010 American Music Awards on Sunday Photo: ABC Sitting at a piano, Justin Bieber showed his haters he’s more than a pretty face and floppy hair for his American Music Awards performance. Bieber played his new single, the uplifting ballad “Pray,” which is a departure from his usual upbeat pop fare. There were no pyrotechnics and no backup dancers. The beginning of the performance was all about Bieber singing the new track off his My Worlds Acoustic album (out on Friday). Midway through the song, however, Bieber threw in that showmanship that’s made him famous. Just one performance after Katy Perry used a children’s choir for her performance of her equally inspirational song, “Firework,” Bieber was joined by a choir of his own. He ended the song on his knees while the crowd rose to their feet to give him a standing ovation. The track — which features a mid-tempo, world-music beat, synths and Bieber’s vocals in a lower key than we’ve heard before — repeats one simple refrain in the chorus. “I close my eyes and I can see a better day/ I close my eyes and pray,” he sings. “It’s a very uplifting song, very motivational,” Bieber told Ryan Seacrest earlier this week about the song. “It definitely comes from the heart. It’s very beautiful. I definitely thought of Michael [Jackson’s] ‘Man in the Mirror’ when I was writing it. The track can be found on the singer’s third release in a year, which features acoustic versions of some of his biggest hits like “Baby.” What did you think of Justin Bieber’s AMA performance?
