Adele Back At #1 On Billboard Chart, Pushing Britney Spears To #2

Spears drops to #2 as sales of Femme Fatale trail off in second week. By Gil Kaufman Adele’s 21 Photo: Columbia Records It’s a bit early to call it a changing of the guard, but British songbird Adele will make a strong case that she is a major force to be reckoned with on the Billboard charts next week when her album 21 retakes the #1 spot. Thanks to sales of 88,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Adele pulls the feat off — her fourth non-consecutive week at #1 since the album’s release in late February — while forcing last week’s #1, Britney Spears ‘ Femme Fatale , down to #2. Spears’ highly anticipated new effort suffers a steep drop-off in its second chart cycle , plunging 73 percent on sales of 75,000, for a two-week total of 352,000. In contrast, Adele has pushed past the 1 million mark in seven weeks to notch the best-selling album of 2011 to date. Also losing a significant amount (70 percent) of business in its second week is rapper Wiz Khalifa ‘s Rolling Papers , which falls three spots to #5 on sales of 59,000. Masked rap-rock crew Hollywood Undead scored their best chart debut ever with American Tragedy, which comes in at #4 (66,000), while little-known metalers Asking Alexandria come in at #9 on sales of 31,000. The rest of the top 10: Radiohead , King of Limbs (#3, 67,000); Chris Brown , F.A.M.E. (#6, 51,000); the iTunes Songs for Japan compilation (#7, 51,000); Mumford & Sons ‘ Sigh No More (#8, 34,000); and Kirk Franklin ‘s Hello Fear (#10, 31,000). Jennifer Hudson ‘s I Remember Me slips four spots to #11 as sales dip 46 percent to 31,000, while Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and former Band member Robbie Robertson scores a #13 debut (22,000) for How to Become Clairvoyant, his first studio album in 13 years. Is Nicki Minaj A Good Fit For Britney Spears’ Tour? Experts Weigh In

‘If people are going mainly for Britney, they will be excited to see Nicki as well and vice versa,’ one insider tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj and Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images After lots of rumors, it was officially announced Tuesday (April 12) that Britney Spears would be bringing along Nicki Minaj (as well as up-and-comers Nervo and Jessie and the Toyboys) on her Femme Fatale tour, kicking off this summer. The Spears/Minaj matchup may not initially make sense, given their very different styles, but according to industry insiders who work on booking talent for venues throughout the country, this really is a match made in heaven. “Bringing [together] two genres of music — one icon and one rising icon — is great for the music business. The combination of Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj on tour together is great for the music industry [and] shows its growing diversity,” Matt Levine of Brandsway Creative, a branding and marketing group in New York City, explained to MTV News. “It gives concertgoers the opportunity to see two independently creative females excelling in their craft and showcasing their talent.” Dawn M. Britt, the director of public relations for the Venetian and Palazzo hotels in Las Vegas, said seeing these ladies on tour together screams girl power. “Both Britney and Nicki give off a very ‘girl power’ attitude, and combining the Femme Fatale and Barbie themes is a smart marketing tool with the all-female tour,” Britt explained. ” … Nicki is a mainstream rapper and collaborates with a lot of pop artists . Their audiences overlap enough that if people are going mainly for Britney, they will be excited to see Nicki as well and vice versa.” Britt said this tour makes tons of sense as it combines “two of the biggest names in music right now. Britney is a legend and in the midst of a huge comeback right now with her new Femme Fatale CD,” she said. “Her recent performance in Vegas was a huge success and really got people excited for the tour. Nicki has been making a name for herself the last few years and is in high demand for collaborations and appearances.” Gary Bongiovanni, editor in chief of Pollstar, explained that Nicki is a good fit for the tour since “that tour likely needs a strong support act, and Nicki is not a bad choice. Options at this late date had to be limited.” He added that since Spears is launching a new phase of her career, “Fan response on an act like Britney … is always a question mark until you put the first shows on sale and the public answers the demand-level question with their wallets.” What do you think of the Britney/Nicki combo? Young Jeezy Drops TM 103 Track ‘Ballin’,’ Featuring Lil Wayne

Song’s arrival could mean long-delayed album is on the way. By Alvin Blanco Young Jeezy Photo: Prince Williams/Getty Images Despite maintaining a low profile lately, Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy is still hard at work. On Tuesday (April 12), the Snowman released “Ballin’,” featuring Lil Wayne, the latest single from his repeatedly delayed fourth album TM 103. On Monday, Jeezy released a preview video that showed him in the studio working on the Lil Lody-produced track. The rapper is seen mixing the song while it plays in the background of the minute-long clip, which announced at the end that the full song would be available Monday at 1:03 p.m. “Ballin’ ” arrived as promised, available for download via Jeezy’s USDA2Day.com website. “Still ballin’ like a mother—-er, tell ’em that/ Three platinum chains to match my platinum plaques,” Jeezy raps over the rugged, bass-heavy beat at the start of the second verse. Weezy closes the song out with his third verse. Last year, Jeezy released “Lose My Mind,” featuring Plies, which was supposed to be the lead single from TM 103, the follow-up album to 2008’s The Recession. Another pair of singles — “All White Everything,” featuring Yo Gotti, and “Jizzle,” featuring Lil Jon — were also released, but the announced September 28 due date for the album came and went with no new record in stores or iTunes. “It took me damn near a year and some change to make this album,” Jeezy told MTV News. “Me and Shawty Redd went back to the … basics. We got in this n—a basement, I moved in with that n—a for three months to finish this album,” Jeezy said. “No nothing, no clubbing. Just straight grinding, all day and all night.” Besides getting his album ready for release, this past weekend Jeezy officially announced the signing of Gary, Indiana, rapper Freddie Gibbs to his CTE label . Britney Spears Didn’t Write Femme Fatale Tracks: Does It Matter?

Ke$ha, Ryan Tedder and other Spears songwriters defend the pop ‘icon’ from criticism that she didn’t pen songs on her latest release. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: C. Flanigan/ WireImage Britney Spears launched her career as a fresh face with the perfect amount of girl-next-door charm and sex appeal and rocketed her way up to pop superstardom. She followed her debut, … Baby One More Time, with a series of chart-topping albums, including her latest release, Femme Fatale. And while fans are loving the new album, some critics are making a fuss over Spears’ lack of songwriting credits. Spears didn’t write any of the tracks on her 1999 debut, but by her second album, Oops! … I Did It Again, she had was making some songwriting contributions. Over the course of five albums, she has co-written 17 tracks, including hit singles “Everytime” and “Me Against the Music.” With Femme Fatale, Brit left the writing to others. And many industry insiders are defending the star for not taking credit for work she didn’t do on Femme Fatale. Songwriter Heather Bright , who wrote the track “Trouble for Me” on Spears’ latest, gave Spears credit for not pushing to get credit for a song she had nothing to do with. “I would just like to address one thing! The media is talking trash about how Britney didn’t write any of the songs on her album … HELLO! Wake up everybody! NONE OF THESE ARTISTS WRITE THEIR OWN SONGS!!!!!!” she wrote, before slamming a laundry list of stars who do seek credit for songs they don’t write. Bright also praised pop stars who in fact write their own songs. Like Bright, Ke$ha, who penned the Femme Fatale track “Till the World Ends,” defended the pop star. Not writing any songs on the album doesn’t make Britney any less of an artist, Ke$ha said. “I think people should be themselves and be their own artist, whatever that means for her,” Ke$ha said in an interview with MTV Canada. “She’s an amazing singer, an amazing performer and she’s an icon. I don’t think that that means she has to write. I do write my own music, some people don’t and it doesn’t at all make them any less of a brilliant artist, obviously, in her case, an icon.” While Spears didn’t write for her current album, she explained that it was important to pick songs that were right for her. “I really like to choose songs that empower people and make them feel good about themselves, first and foremost. I have a team of people that I work with, Max Martin and Dr. Luke, that are amazing producers,” she told MTV News recently. “They bring me a load of songs but usually I’m very quick with the way I work and the type of songs that I like. And if I like it, then I’ll record it.” “Gasoline” songwriter Claude Kelly told us that Spears always knows what’s best for her. “She’s very, very much in control of what she records, how she sounds, how she portrays herself on the record,” Kelly said of Britney’s process. “There’s no grand master puppeteering — that’s kind of a myth. She knows what she’s going to cut. She’s not going to sing anything she doesn’t want to and she has this amazing ability when she gets behind the mic. It’s like eye of the tiger.” Songwriter and One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder also gave props to Spears for not taking credit for music she had nothing to do with. “I love that Britney does that. She knows where she is, and she shows up to the studio and says, ‘What am I singing today guys? Okay, cool! Let me look at it,’ ” he said. “So to me it’s whatever, be thankful for what you have.” Do you think Britney is less of a pop star because she doesn’t write her own songs? Sound off in the comments.
