Early on the morning of September 25, Miami Marlins pitching phenom Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident . The two-time MLB All-Star and former National League rookie of the year was just 24 years old. In their first game back following Fernandez’s tragic passing, the Marlins paid loving tribute to Fernandez, with the entire team wearing his jersey. Fernandez’s friend and teammate Dee Gordon led off the game with a home run – his first in 358 days – and welled up with tears as he rounded the bases. Two friends of Fernandez’s, Eddy Rivero and Emilio Macias, were also killed when Fernandez’s 32-foot fishing boat crashed into a jetty off the coast of Miami Beach. Now, details about what brought all three men our on that fateful late-night excursion are beginning to emerge thanks to information provided by family and friends. According to several of his teammates was eager to head out on the water due to a fight with his pregnant girlfriend. Aware of his fragile emotional state, friends say they cautioned him to be careful. “That night I told him, ‘Don’t go out,’” outfielder Marcell Ozuna told the Miami Herald . “Everybody knew he was crazy about that boat and loved being out on the water. I told him I couldn’t go out that night because I had the kids and my wife waiting for me.” Fernandez assured Ozuna that all would be well and asked his friend to help make sure he made it to the ballpark on time the following morning: “He told me if I didn’t hear from him by 10 a.m. (Sunday) to call him and wake him up so he could get back to the ballpark on time for the game,” Ozuna said “I told him, ‘Yeah no problem. I’ll call you.’ I woke up Sunday and that’s when I found out. I cried and cried.” Will Bernal, a close friend of Rivero’s posted the above photo, along with his and Rivero’s final text message exchange, on his Instagram page. As you can see, Bernal also had concerns about the planned boating trip. He captioned the photo: “Our last phone conversation and text messages last night. I feel sick to my stomach. “Everyone is talking about Jose Fernandez but you died trying to be there for him and be a good friend. This doesn’t sit with me well. “I can’t get over this nightmare. I already miss you and our daily conversations. You died being a great friend. “I feel guilty that I didn’t do a better job of trying to convince you not get on that boat. You told me just so I know in case something happens. You had a gut feeling and that is killing me. Anyway, it turns out Lochte is only slightly better at dancing than he is at lying his way out of tight spots. On tonight’s elimination show, he and Cheryl Burke are on the chopping block along with several other couples who all failed to earn immunity during last night’s competition . Marilu Henner and Derek Hough, Amber Rose and Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Allison Holker, or Terra Jolé and Sasha Farber could all be sent packing. Of course, a bad attitude is often a deal-breaker on DWTS and thus far, two stars have allegedly been caught speaking ill about their show and their experiences in the race for the Mirrored Ball. Last week, sources claimed that Amber Rose griped that the show is “rigged.” Now, it seems Lochte is echoing her complaint . According to Radar Online, the Olympian is not happy about facing elimination, and he feels that the judges knew he would never win the competition before he ever set foot on the floor. “Ryan and Cheryl are pretty sure that they are going to be eliminated tonight,” a source tells the website. “Ryan was actually telling people that he thought the show was rigged and that everyone was out to sabotage him.” The 32-year-old also took issue with last night’s unorthodox head-to-head format: “He also said that it was unfair of them to put him and Cheryl up against James Hinchcliffe and his partner Sharna Burgess, because he said that they are both ‘really strong dancers.’” The insider adds that Lochte was visibly upset after Hinchcliffe and Burgess emerged victorious: “After they lost last night, Ryan was not even trying to hide his emotions,” the source says. “He was super upset and Cheryl was trying to console him, but he was not having any of it.” So could Lochte be facing yet another public humiliation? Tragedy has struck the world of professional sports: Jose Fernandez, one of the best young players in Major League Baseball, was found dead early Sunday morning. He was 24 years old. The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed Fernandez was one of three people killed in a boat crash off Miami Beach after the vessel he was on crashed into a jetty. In response to the tragedy, the Miami Marlins announced that Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves had been canceled. The team also released the following statement: “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.” Chief Petty Officer Nyxolyno Cangemi told The Associated Press that a Coast Guard patrol boat spotted an overturned boat at approximately 3:30 a.m. on a jetty near Government Cut. The bodies of all three victims were discovered a short while later. Fernandez was on a 32-foot board that had a “severe impact” with the jetty, said Fish and Wildlife spokesman Lorenzo Veloz. Just last week, Fernandez had announced that his girlfriend was pregnant. “All of Baseball is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández,” Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “He was one of our game’s great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life.” Fernandez emigrated to the United States from Cuba in 2008, following three failed defection attempts. He eventually settled in Tampa, Florida and became a United States citizen last year. He was the 14th overall draft pick in 2011 by the Marlins, out of Tampa’s Alonso High School. Two years later, Fernandez was named the National League Rookie of the Year. This past year, he was 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA this season, earning his second appearance in the All-Star Game. Major League Baseball Players Associated executive director Tony Clark also released a statement Sunday morning in response to the awful news: “We are devastated by the news that Jose Fernandez has tragically passed. Jose was a remarkable young man and a tremendously gifted athlete, who at just 24, established himself as one of the game’s biggest and brightest stars. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jose’s family, friends, teammates, Miami Marlins organization and legions of fans in the United States and Latin America.” We also send our thoughts and prayers to Fernandez’s friends, family members and loved ones.
