Drake, Nicki Minaj Talk Jay-Z And Lil Wayne At Madison Square Garden

‘It was the stuff that dreams are made of,’ Minaj says of appearing on the stage with Jay-Z and her Young Money boss. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by MTV News staff Drake Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Lil Wayne and his Young Money cohorts Drake and Nicki Minaj stormed the stage at Madison Square Garden two weeks ago for a guest turn during Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour . The Roc Nation head called the spot “fantastic.” Turns out, Drake and Nicki Minaj thought so too. Young Jeezy, who welcomed the trio to his set, first introduced Nicki Minaj to thunderous applause. The Queens native said that prior to the concert, she and everyone else in Wayne’s camp were spending time with the rapper after he learned he had an extra day of freedom. Lil Wayne was scheduled to turn himself in to begin his prison stint that afternoon. A fire at the courthouse , however, prevented Wayne’s sentencing. With some time to kill, the crew got a phone call to put the plans in motion. “We were just talking to Wayne and he was being his crazy self,” Nicki told MTV News. “I got a call from Gee [Wayne’s co-manager and former executive at Roc-A-Fella] and the first name I heard was Jay-Z and I thought, ‘There’s no way Jay-Z approved me to be on this show.’ And I was like, ‘Do I want to?’ I’m on the next thing, smoking. I canceled meeting that day and the next day. “Madison Square Garden? I’m from New York,” she continued. “This means the world to me — to be there with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Drake. It was the stuff that dreams are made of for a girl. Girls aren’t usually in those unique little circles.” Drake heaped praise on his boss, Lil Wayne, for sharing his extra day (that turned into an extra week) with his fans. “It was a moment where people thought Wayne had gone in and the surprise was he had an extra day, and a selfless individual came out and showed up for the people of New York,” Drake told MTV News. “The city he got convicted in, of all places. It was a great night.” The “Best I Ever Had” MC even joked about violating Jay-Z’s all-black dress code that was set for the festivities. “That’s just who I am,” Drake said, laughing about his all-white getup. “Young Angel.” Related Videos Nicki Minaj And Drake Speak On Their Surprise Blueprint 3 Show Related Artists Drake Nicki Minaj

The Stooges, ABBA Headline Eclectic Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Ceremony

Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, the Hollies also inducted in show featuring Phish, Green Day and more. By James Montgomery The Stooges’ Iggy Pop performs with Greenday’s Billie Joe Armstrong at the 25th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images NEW YORK — It opened with a Phish show, nearly exploded into a (very well-heeled) proto-punk riot, got giddy on a fix of sunshiny Swedish pop, and finally wrapped up with a ’50’s-tinged tribute. It was the 25th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, back in NYC after a one-year sojourn in Cleveland (where the titular hall actually exists). And while it may have been lacking the star power of previous years’ ceremonies — Eminem and Metallica in 2009 , Madonna and Justin Timberlake in ’08 — it certainly showcased the breadth and depth of this thing we call rock music. 2010 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony ABBA, Genesis, the Stooges, Jimmy Cliff and the Hollies were the performers that headlined the 2010 class, inducted into the hall by the likes of the Bee Gees’ Barry and Robin Gibb and Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. Variety was the theme of the night, expressed in the wide range of performances and the revered tones of the inductors, which ranged from genuinely geeky (Phish’s Trey Anastasio, who inducted Genesis and spoke at length about the group’s “seven-note guitar lines” and the technical prowess of their 1973 album Selling England by the Pound ) to gleefully amped (Armstrong swore a whole lot as he inducted the Stooges). The show began with Phish running through Genesis’s proggy “Watchers of the Sky,” then Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford took the stage to accept their award, thanking Anastasio for his “really convincing argument” about the oft-derided band’s legacy. Original singer Peter Gabriel wasn’t there because he was “rehearsing for an orchestral tour,” according to Collins. Phish then played a second Genesis tune, “No Reply at All.” Up next were the Stooges, long denied a slot in the hall despite their obvious influences on everything from punk to metal, and they more than made up for lost time. First, Armstrong — who was “very excited and nervous as hell” to be inducting them — strode to the podium and launched into a heartfelt speech that praised the band’s commitment to “blood and guts, sex and drugs … peanut butter and poetry.” The Green Day frontman rattled off basically every band the Stooges had ever influenced, a list that included Nirvana, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Queens of the Stone Age “and my f—ing band too.” “It is my honor to induct into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — and it’s about f—ing time — the Stooges!” Armstrong exclaimed. Stooge main man Iggy Pop strutted onto the stage and — still wearing a shirt — gave the tuxedoed crowd a double middle-finger salute, followed by a genuinely touching speech that mentioned late members Dave Alexander and Ron Asheton , shouted out “all the poor people who actually started rock and roll” and concluded with a thanks to all his fans for giving the band “a second act,” getting choked up as he said it. Pop turned the mic over to fellow Stooges James Williamson and Ron’s brother Scott and began unbuttoning his white dress shirt as they spoke. He then stormed off to the stage, and, aided by bassist Mike Watt and tenor sax skronker Steve Mackay, ripped through a pair of the Stooges’ burners — “Search and Destroy” and “I Wanna Be Your Dog” — the latter of which saw Iggy prowl the front row of the audience, belt out the chorus under the watchful gaze of Dr. Oz (for real), then invite anyone and everyone onstage. Green Day and members of Pearl Jam gleefully obliged, as did a few fairly radical men and women in their formal wear. Back in the press room, Iggy explained his impromptu invasion thusly: “Well, you can’t really stage-dive in a place like this.” Legendary record exec David Geffen and British rock act the Hollies were inducted next, followed by Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff (who was lovingly introduced by Wyclef Jean) and then, in perhaps the night’s most anticipated moment, globally revered Swedish pop quartet ABBA, who hadn’t performed together in public in nearly 25 years. Unfortunately, only half of the group’s members — Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson (who were married once upon a time) — showed up to accept their trophies from the Gibbs. They seemed touched by the honor, and Andersson took to the piano to perform one of the group’s most masterful hits, “The Winner Takes It All,” with country star Faith Hill on vocals. There was a tribute to the night’s honored songwriters — a list that included luminaries like Otis Blackwell and Jesse Stone (who wrote songs made famous by the likes of Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis) — featuring Rob Thomas, Ronnie Spector, Eric Burdon, Chris Isaak, Peter Wolf and Fefe Dobson, who rolled through the hits and then closed the show with a version of Stone’s “Shake, Rattle and Roll.” By this point, the telecast was nearly four hours long, and the audience — though weary — cheered mightily. It was worth the wait. Variety takes time, after all. Related Photos 2010 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Ceremony Related Artists Iggy Pop & The Stooges ABBA Green Day

Siobhan Magnus Profile: Is She Too Quirky To Win ‘American Idol’?

Our ‘American Idol’ top 12 cheat sheet looks at Magnus’ strengths and weaknesses. By Jim Cantiello Siobhan Magnus at the “American Idol” top 12 party Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage On Thursday night, “American Idol” revealed its top 12 finalists for the ninth season of the hit show. MTV News “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello whipped up a handy cheat sheet for each finalist, breaking down each specific “Idol” journey thus far. He also got the “Idol” hopefuls to weigh in when he caught up with them at Thursday night’s top 12 party in Hollywood. Siobhan Magnus Siobhan Magnus may look like an extra from “Gossip Girl,” but she’d probably be more at home on an episode of “Freaks and Geeks.” She speaks like she’s on lithium and dresses like a Benihana hostess, but, most importantly, she sings like a champ. The odd combination has proven an irresistible and appetizing mix for “Idol” viewers and judges alike. In a season overrun with quirky contestants, Siobhan Magnus definitely takes the (fruit) cake. Best Performance : Siobhan’s partially a cappella “House of the Rising Sun” was a haunting triumph, made all the more poignant due to its “this one goes out to my dad” dedication. Weakest Performance : It’s a little unfair to call Magnus’ “Think” weak since it featured a stunning rebel yell of a high note that was one of the most unexpected and thrilling moments of the season. Unfortunately, the rest of her Aretha Franklin performance was off-putting in a “why is this skinny white girl marching around onstage and pointing at audience members haphazardly?” kind of way. Tragic Backstory : Siobhan has a heavy home life that “Idol” producers often glob onto, but so far, the only things we know about Magnus is that she’s a glassblowing apprentice, she does silly warm-ups with her mouth, and she trained herself to wail high notes by singing Kelly Clarkson songs in the shower. ‘American Idol’ Top 12 Party Why She Will Win : Siobhan is, as Simon said, “a strange little thing.” You can’t deny that she’d make for interesting television every week. Viewers may decide to vote her to the finale just to see what the wild child might sing (or say) next. It also helps that she has real vocal chops behind the quirk. Why She Will Lose : Is she too quirky? The last time “Idol” voters rewarded a “zany” contestant, we ended up with a Taylor Hicks victory. And we all know how well that turned out. What She Should Sing : If Siobhan brought her guttural wail and lilting croon to Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” she’d be incomparable. And unstoppable. On Her Own “Sasha Fierce” Performance Persona : “I’m in a different place when I’m onstage. I kind of go inside my head and do my own thing. It’s not just me talking to somebody. It’s me in the zone, doing what I love to do more than anything.” What do you think of Siobhan’s chances on “Idol”? Were you happy to see her make it to the top 12? Let us know! 311 Thrill Fans During Epic Five-Hour Set

Mellow rockers play to sold-out Las Vegas crowd on 311 Day. By Matt Elias, with additional reporting by Lauren Black and Dave Kosin 311’s Nick Hexum (file) Photo: Dana Nalbandian/ WireImage “It’s the most epic show in the world,” declared die-hard fan Matthew Brill of 311 Day, a five-hour-plus marathon of music put on by veteran mellow rockers 311. Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas served as the worship center for the most holy of holidays for 311 fans (March 11, of course). Fans lined up as early as 1 p.m. to secure spots close to the stage, which was tricked out with the most advanced stage displays that the band has ever used. 311 shirts plastered the arena as eager fans waited for the show to begin, shortly after 7:30 p.m. As the boys from Omaha hit the stage, the sold-out crowd rejoiced as loudly as the reverberating amplifiers that were blaring the opening notes of “Jackpot.” Vocalists Nick Hexum and S.A. Martinez pogoed around the 360-degree stage, taking full advantage of the sprawling space. Above the band hung a multi-tier circular screen playing the simultaneous webcast of the show. The crowd kept up with the band, staying on its feet and dancing during the entire 60-song set. In addition to all of the hits (“Beautiful Disaster,” “All Mixed Up” and “Down”), 311 sprinkled rare, older gems into the mix, “Sun Come Through,” “Slinky” and “Loco” to name a few. Fans especially responded to “Taiyed,” which included an extended midsong jam session. 311 maintained their stamina by dividing the show into three sets, taking short breaks in between. They also officially announced the 2010 Summer Unity Tour, featuring the Offspring, bringing a huge roar of approval from the audience. 311 closed out the impressive event with “Unity” as an encore. Over the five hours of music, every bandmember got his time to shine, with Aaron “P-Nut” Wills lighting up his backlit bass, Tim Mahoney proving his acrobatics on the guitar, and drummer Chad Sexton performing impeccable drum solos. By the end of the night everyone was drenched in sweat — both the band and the crowd — suggesting that 311 Day is more than just a concert, it’s a religious experience. 2010 Oscar Mysteries: Explained! [Sleuthing]

If you were like me, last night you were watching the show with plenty of questions. Why so long? Why so bad? Who is that weird red-haired lady crashing the stage? Well, we found some answers and even more questions. Mystery : Who the hell was that red-haired lady crashing the stage during the Best Documentary Short acceptance speech? What Happened : Some crazy lady in a purple dress pulled a Kanye and hopped up to the mic and just started talking over director-producer Roger Ross Williams. She made no sense at all. Status : Solved. That woman was producer Elinor Burkett. She and Williams had a bitter feud over the direction of the film that resulted in a lawsuit. Salon has the full, awesome story . She accuses Williams’ mother of tripping her with a cane to keep her from getting on stage. The Oscars needed a lot more of this . Mystery : What was up with George Clooney ‘s face? What Happened : The silver fox was acting squirrelier than usual and making strange grimaces at the camera. Status : Solved: As we told you earlier Clooney was drunk from his secret flask. Who knows if the faces were because he was pissed (drunk) or pissed (upset) but we venture it was a combo of the two. Mystery : Did the Academy leave Farrah Fawcett and others out of the Dead People Montage? What Happened : The video collection of dead people highlights seemed shorter than usual this year (if you don’t count the entirely separate shout out to John Hughes who was never once nominated for an Oscar in his life) but they left several people out, like Fawcett, Bea Arthur , and Ed McMahon. Status : Solved. Yes, it was intentional . The Academy felt that in all three instances their work didn’t qualify them for inclusion, even though Michael Jackson and Brittany Murphy made the grade. They are not apologizing for skipping them either, saying every year some people must be left out. We smell Betty White’s hand in this. Mystery : Did Sandra Bullock diss Meryl Streep ? What Happened : When she got up to accept her trophy, Sandy B made a move toward Meryl, who tried to hug her or something, and then Sandy walked away and Meryl made the “Oh, never mind” gesture. The video is here . Status : Solved: Yes, she did. It doesn’t seem intentional, but the hug clearly didn’t connect. Maybe that is why Sandy repeatedly called Meryl her lover in her speech, to make up for causing her to look a fool on television. Mystery : What was up with those lamp shades? What Happened : At various points in the broadcast, a giant wall of lamp shades descended from heaven to make the stage look like the party room at a T.G.I. Friday’s in Wilkes-Barre. Status : Solved: It was a mistake—a very bad mistake. Mystery : Does Cameron Diaz not know how to read? What Happened : When she came out to present the award for Best Animated Feature with Steve Carell , they read their little banter and Cameron called Steve “Jude” by mistake before he corrected her and said their skit was originally written for Jude Law and they never fixed the Teleprompter Status : Solved: It was just a really bad joke, people. See, they talk about how Animated Features keep their beautiful faces off screen, and then we find out that it was supposed to be written for Jude Law, because, of course, no one would ever call Steve Carell attractive. Ha! Jokes. Too bad the show was so lame and riddled with mistakes that their very plausible meaning was a little too plausible. Mystery : What the fuck happened to Judd Nelson ? What Happened : When a bunch of brat packers, including a radiant Molly Ringwald, came out to pay tribute to John Hughes, it was apparent that all of them had aged, but none as badly as The Breakfast Club bad boy, who was practically unrecognizable. Status : Unsolved. He’s still working as an actor, so no one thinks he is destitute or drug-riddled or something. Everyone noticed he looked crazy but no one knows why. Yet. Mystery : Was Kathy Ireland drunk or on drugs? What Happened : The former supermodel was one of three co-hosts for ABC’s 30-minute red carpet special before the show began. She was horrible. Bad interview followed bad interview, she seemed semi-coherent, and her non-microphone-holding arm barely moved. Status : Solved. She was not on drugs . Now we have even more questions. Considering she has a billion (yes, that’s a b) dollar design business and we have never seen her host on TV before, what the hell was she doing there? Of all the people that ABC could have tapped to do the gig, why choose an inexperience lady who looks like she has a prosthetic? Is Kelly Ripa too normal or something? And if we wanted some crazy old lady with lots of plastic surgery on the red carpet, why not bring back Joan Rivers? Our mind is still boggling. Mystery : Will people watch again? What Happened : Last night’s telecast had the highest ratings in five years with 41.3 million viewers. It was also one of the worst productions in recent memories. Will people bother next year? Status : Solved. Of course. It’s the Oscars. Maybe not as many, but you know they’ll be there. And please, please, just let Neil Patrick Harris host next year. He promises his tux won’t be nearly as shiny. Mystery : Why the hell was there street dancing at the Oscars? What Happened : A troupe of television dancers were given the stage to do strange hip-hop contortions to the classically-influenced music of the Best Score nominees. Status : Unclear. We solved how it happened—director Adam Shankman who is a choreographer and TV dance show host—but we will forever be asking why. Why, why, why?
