Muse Bassist Compares Being On ‘Twilight’ Soundtracks To Selling Soul

Chris Wolstenholme is ambivalent about soundtracks that have boosted his band’s profile in the U.S. By Gil Kaufman Muse’s Chris Wolstenholme Photo: Stuart Wilson/ Getty Images After making millions of potential new fans thanks to the inclusion of their songs on all three “Twilight” soundtrack albums, Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme may be risking the bloodthirsty wrath of the Twi-Hard Nation with some comments he recently made about the vampire sensation. “I’m not sure how cool it is to be on those kind of things, but sometimes you’ve just got to get your music out there in different ways,” the told BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat column. Even with the films’ box-office success and the massive exposure for the band, which is stadium-rocking huge in Europe but has not yet broken through in the same way in the U.S., Wolstenholme said he’s not sure the trade-off has been worth it. “It’s very difficult in America, because you don’t have anything like Radio 1, nothing is national,” he said. “You have to take every opportunity you get over there, and sometimes you have to sell your soul.” The group’s “Supermassive Black Hole” was the lead track on the original “Twilight” soundtrack — and it played a pivotal role in the key baseball scene in the film — while “I Belong to You (New Moon Remix)” appeared on the “New Moon” disc, and “Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)” is on the “Eclipse” album. “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer is an avowed fan of the drama-loving band and has said that their music inspired her writing, but Wolstenholme appeared ambivalent about how the music has been used in the films. He said he watched the original movie and “quite enjoyed it,” even if it wasn’t his “cup of tea,” but he has not seen the two sequels. When it came time to place “Neutron Star Collision” in “Eclipse,” there appears to have been some confusion over where it would fit in that added to his uneasiness about participating in the project. “When we were in the studio writing it, one minute they said they wanted to use it in the end credits, then they said they wanted to use it in another scene,” he said. “Then it was another scene, and in the end, we were like, ‘Do what you want with it, we don’t care any more.’ ” The comments were a bit of a turnabout from ones drummer Dominic Howard made in October, when he said the band was flattered to be the only group to appear on the first two “Twilight” soundtracks. “It might be something to do with Stephenie Meyer and that she loves us,” Howard told MTV News. “We met her quite awhile ago in Phoenix — it was before ‘Twilight’ came out. She’s a very nice lady and talked about how she listens to our music as she writes her books. This is all way before it turned into this huge success that it is, before everyone went vampire nuts.” At the time, Howard said that inclusion in the “Twilight” franchise had helped Muse reach out to “whole loads of new people that haven’t heard us before. … It’s a nice side project to be involved in.” After pushing back, rearranging and canceling a pair of North American dates due to the impending birth of Wolstenholme’s fifth child, Muse are slated to be back on the road in the U.S. for a September 22 show in San Diego. And the bassist said things are finally breaking through for them stateside. “It’s going great over there,” he said. “Early this year, we started playing in arenas, so it was great to finally take over the full production that we toured with in Europe. … For a long time, America fell by the wayside and nothing was really happening at all, and we were having problems with our record company over there.” But with a full slate of dates through the end of the year, don’t expect a follow-up to last year’s Resistance any time soon. “The touring schedules are so crazy that just the thought of another album is just not even there at the moment,” he said. “I’m sure [singer] Matt [Bellamy] has plenty of ideas, but physically trying to get together and work on stuff is just not possible on tour. … The few days off we do have, we like to go home or go somewhere and chill out. We prefer to keep the two things separate and not try and think too much about recording when we’re touring.” What do you think of Chris’ comments about “Twilight”? Sound off in the comments. ‘Breaking Dawn’ Part Two Release Date Not Set For Summer 2012

Summit exec says the final ‘Twilight’ movie’s release date is ‘still the source of discussions.’ By Eric Ditzian Stephenie Meyer’s “Breaking Dawn” Photo: Little, Brown and Company In June, Summit Entertainment announced that “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” will be released as two separate films , with the first part arriving on November 18, 2011. Though no release date for the second part has been announced, the conventional wisdom has been that the second part would follow in the summer of 2012. Not so fast. Summit distribution chief Richie Fay told MTV News that no such decision has been made and that the studio is still exploring multiple release dates, not just ones in the summer. “We’ve targeted a number of dates, and we have yet to determine when it will happen,” Fay said. “We haven’t even determined that it will be the summer. It’s still the source of discussions.” Of course, studios always explore various release dates for pictures, especially established blockbusters, and the fact that Summit hasn’t committed the second “Breaking Dawn” to the summer season shouldn’t be mistaken for confusion or indecision within studio headquarters. But the 2012 summer movie calendar is rapidly filling up, not necessarily with films that widely share an audience with “Breaking Dawn,” but with established franchises or properties in their own right. That May will offer “The Avengers,” “Madagascar 3” and “Men in Black 3,” while June delivers a “Star Trek” sequel. The rebooted “Spider-Man” has already nabbed the July 4th slot (occupied this year by “Eclipse”), followed closely by another “Ice Age” and a third “Batman.” Surely there’s room here for “Breaking Dawn,” but Summit now has experience releasing “Twilight” movies both in the summer and the fall. And, as Fay says, the studio might not be ready to pick a season for “Breaking Dawn” until “Eclipse” finishes up its theatrical run . “We might have a preference when we see where ‘Eclipse’ ends up,” he said of choosing one season over another. “It certainly might color our thinking, but we’re comfortable with either place. Right now, it’s a bit early in that stage of planning.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Stephenie Meyer Wants ‘Breaking Dawn’ Birth Scene To Be ‘Awful’

‘For those of us who have been through childbirth … it is a scary, terrifying experience,’ she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephenie Meyer Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images While Stephenie Meyer’s favorite scene in “Eclipse” was very much on par with that of her “Twilight” fans (the “tent scene” ), she might stand alone with her favorite scene in “Breaking Dawn,” which creeped out a lot of her devoted fans. When MTV News chatted with the best-selling author at the Los Angeles premiere of “Eclipse” last week, Meyer revealed that she is most excited to see the very descriptive and messy “birth scene” on the big screen. “I’d love to have the birth scene be every bit as awful — I know it freaked people out, but for those of us who have been through childbirth a couple times, it is a scary, terrifying experience,” she said. “This is just taking that to an exponential power, and I love going there.” By Meyer’s estimation, another challenging scene for “Dawn” director Bill Condon and company to tackle in their upcoming two films will be the infamous and also fairly controversial/creepy werewolf imprinting. “The imprinting thing, how do you have that come across?” Meyer wondered about Jacob’s relationship with Bella and Edward’s baby, Renesmee . “How do you make it clear what’s going on inside someone that way? It’s a challenge. I think Bill might be up to it, though. He’s really smart and on top of it.” Meyer wouldn’t reveal what she and Condon have discussed for each film specifically, of course, only that she is very happy with his work thus far. “I love his ideas so far,” she said. “He’s had some good ones.” Does the birth scene in “Breaking Dawn” creep you out? ‘Twilight’ Author Stephenie Meyer Talks ‘Midnight Sun,’ Potential Spin-Offs

‘I’d be really happy … if I could just pick up that thread of thought and go with it,’ she tells MTV News of the leaked ‘Sun.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephenie Meyer Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images When MTV News caught up with “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer at the “Eclipse” premiere in Los Angeles last week, she reiterated that her “burned-out on vampires” sentiments are still preventing her from finishing “Midnight Sun.” “This is really fun,” she said, referencing the big premiere and extensive red carpet, “But I am burned out on vampires. It’s like homework now. I think some of that is working on the [‘The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide’], and it really is like homework, because I love to write and I want to write with joy.” When asked whether “Sun,” the unfinished “Twilight” companion book told from Edward’s perspective, would be completely different from the version that leaked online in 2008, Meyer was undecided. “I’d be really happy if it was not different, if I could just pick up that thread of thought and go with it,” she said. “One of the things that makes it hard to write is knowing people are going to say, ‘This is so much worse than the original’ or ‘This is so much better.’ … That’s why you don’t want your early drafts leaked, because the magic of editing, you kind of see the man behind the curtain at that point.” Regarding her recent “Twilight” spin-off book “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner,” Meyer was reluctant to speculate on what other characters in her “Twilight” world could be featured in future standalone books. “I don’t know if there are spin-off books,” she said. “We’re doing the guide, and a lot of those backstories I was telling [screenwriter] Melissa [Rosenberg] about, that’s where the source is. … I think a lot of those stories will be out there with the guide — not in a very long version, but I think, in a way, people feel like they know all those stories.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Eclipse’: The Reviews Are In!

Some reviewers agree with one critic who praised the novelty of a blockbuster saga centered on ‘a girl’s primal dream of being desired.’ By Eric Ditzian Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Would it be an exaggeration to say “Eclipse” is the most polarizing film of the year so far? In one corner, you have the Twilighters lining up outside theaters across the country to be among the first to check out the latest romance-laden adventure starring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. Those fans will line up again and again before the weekend is over, likely bringing “Eclipse” an opening box-office haul to match, if not exceed, the $142.8 million that “New Moon” grossed in November. In the other corner, you’ve got the skeptics, the who-watches-this-crap haters and the bloggers taking to the Web to spew vitriol at every moment of teen romance “Eclipse” has to offer. There will be no d

Nikki Reed Was ‘Intimidated’ By Rosalie’s Backstory In ‘Eclipse’

‘I know that the fans have expectations,’ she tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Nikki Reed Photo: Damian Vaca/ MTV News “Twilight” was all about Bella and Edward. Then in “New Moon,” Jacob really stepped it up. While “Eclipse” definitely focuses on the love triangle, fans also get to learn a bit more about their friends and family. When Nikki Reed had to shoot Rosalie’s backstory, her biggest moment yet in “The Twilight Saga,” she was feeling the pressure. “I was torn, because I was definitely looking forward to it. I mean, I read the first three books before we began filming ‘Twilight,’ so I knew what I had in store if we made all three movies,” she told MTV News about going back in time and showing the fans Rosalie’s story. “But I was obviously very intimidated, and I felt a little insecure, and I was nervous, and maybe I should not be saying all these things, but I was.” For those unfamiliar with the “Twilight” series ( spoiler alert! ), when she was a human, Rosalie was attacked by a group of men, including her fianc

‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’: Vampires Wanted, By Kurt Loder

Third time’s not the charm. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit “Eclipse” might be as good as the “Twilight” films are going to get. The main actors have settled comfortably into their roles in this third installment of the franchise. Jackson Rathbone, Nikki Reed and Ashley Greene, the more interesting of the home-team vampires, have a welcome new prominence, and Robert Pattinson even has a scene in which he displays a twinge of character-development. The movie also has some actual action, as everyone must know by now — a big vampires-versus-vampires-versus-werewolves battle sequence at the end of the picture. However, having imposed something like narrative clarity on the story, new director David Slade is still stuck with the story — which, deriving as it does from the paceless goop of Stephenie Meyer’s books, and having been wrestled into a script by Melissa Rosenberg, is a threadbare quilt of pre-teen romantic clich

The 9 Best Lines From Harry Knowles’s Highly Sexualized Review of Eclipse

Confession time: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ? It’s…kinda fun. No, really. I mean, it’s corny as all get out, but it’s just a big dumb ball of well-directed, wink-wink romance — why, just ask Harry Knowles! The Ain’t It Cool News webmaster published his review of the film today , and it’s a borderline giddy, possibly intoxicated missive that really get to the heart (and genitals) of the matter. Here are the 9 best passages:

It looks like Sheldon Turner might have gotten his Oscar season frustrations out with the help of Final Draft. The Up in the Air co-writer has his directorial debut lined up: By Virtue Fall , a drama that “charts a professional and personal relationship between two characters that evolves from friendship to betrayal and retribution.” So, it’s a reality-based tale about his Academy Award rivalry with Jason Reitman? Got it. Adding to the fun: wild card Nicolas Chartier’s Voltage Pictures is setting up the financing for the indie, which may star Colin Farrell and Eric Bana. [ Deadline ]

REVIEW: Actors Might Give Up on Eclipse, But Fans Won’t

It’s all too tempting to look down on the Twilight movie series — based on Stephenie Meyer’s explosively popular series of novels — as quickie pictures designed to herd in large audiences of indiscriminate, ticket-buying, Robert Pattinson-and/or-Taylor Lautner-loving teen- and tweenage girls. And with the exception of the first movie in the series, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, that’s exactly what they are. The real horror isn’t simply that these movies are bad — plenty of us were raised on, and loved, junk movies and crap TV. It’s that the folks at the top don’t think teen and tween audiences deserve better. The latest installment, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, directed by David Slade ( 30 Days of Night, Hard Candy ), while admittedly an improvement over last year’s barely coherent New Moon, only adds insult to injury. Nothing so grand as a real eclipse, it’s more just a massive blind spot.
