End Of Days: 23 Earthquakes Hit Arkansas In The Last 2 Days!

First the birds, then the fish, now this, act accordingly… The Earth is shaking in central Arkansas. Almost two dozen earthquakes of magnitude 2.3 or greater have struck the region since midnight Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reports. The largest of the temblors, at 4.3 magnitude, hit at 2:13 a.m. Friday. It followed a 4.0-magnitude event at 11 p.m. Thursday. No damage has been reported from any of the quakes, all centered near the town of Greenbrier in Faulkner County, CNN affiliate KARK reports. Residents reported hearing a boom at the time of Friday morning’s quake, KARK reported. The earthquake swarm is reminiscent of a swarm that hit the area last fall. More than 500 were recorded in less than a month. Mother nature isn’t happy with us, and it seems like she’s intent on letting us know exactly how pissed off she is. What do YOU think is going on out here?? Source

America’s First Black President Is Voted Most Admirable Man Three Years In A Row

Americans still love Barry O : His party may have suffered a shellacking in November’s elections, but President Obama remains the unchallenged champion on another front: For the third year in a row, he is by far the most-admired man. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton continues an even longer run, ranked in the USA TODAY/Gallup Poll as the most-admired woman for the ninth straight year. Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin is second, as she was in 2009. Despite Americans’ unhappiness with the nation’s politics, politicians dominate both lists. The top 10 men include not only the president but also three living former presidents. Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton take the top three spots. Among women, nine of the top 11 are connected to politics through public service, political activism or marriage. “It’s all about power,” says Richard Slotkin, professor emeritus of American studies at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. “When we think of importance, we think politically, that’s really clear — with religion a close second, though Bill Gates beats out Pope Benedict. It’s almost like a register of power.” Not on either top 10 list: a Supreme Court justice, senator or House member, athlete or scientist. Conservative commentator Glenn Beck edges ahead of the Dalai Lama, who ranks 10th. Gates, a philanthropist and co-founder of Microsoft, stands just behind South African icon Nelson Mandela and just before Pope Benedict XVI. Evangelist Billy Graham, tied for sixth, has made the top 10 every year the survey has been taken since 1955. The top 11 women (three are tied for ninth place) counts four first ladies, including Michelle Obama in fourth place. Celebrities Oprah Winfrey and Angelina Jolie, both of whom pursue charitable causes, are on the list. Three of the women are leaders from abroad: Queen Elizabeth and former prime minister Margaret Thatcher of Great Britain and democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma. Barack Obama’s standing has fallen from the heady days after his election in 2008. That year, he was cited by 32%, a historic rating that trailed only Bush’s percentage in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 and President Kennedy in 1961. This year, Obama was named by 22%, and Bush was named by 5%. Some of the findings reflect a partisan cast. Obama is named by almost half of Democrats but just 6% of Republicans. Bush is the most-admired man among Republicans, cited by 11%. Hillary Clinton is cited by nearly a third of Democrats but just 5% of Republicans. Palin is the most-admired woman among Republicans, at 26%. Not everyone has a hero. Twenty-five percent declined to name a most-admired man, and 22% didn’t name a most-admired woman. About one in 10 chose a friend or relative. The Dec. 10-12 survey of 1,019 adults has a margin of error of +/–4 percentage points. SMH at Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck being on the list as well. Source

MTV’s ’16 And Pregnant’ Credited For Decline In Teen Pregnancy Rates

Eighty-two percent of teens say the hit series helps them understand the trials of parenthood, according to a new report. By James Dinh Chelsea on “16 and Pregnant” From the chaotic family dynamics to the aftermath of childbirth, MTV’s hit show “16 and Pregnant” has illustrated that teen parenthood is not always an easy journey. These candid glimpses inside the trials of young parents apparently are making a mark on youth across America, as the series is being credited with helping to spur a decrease in teen pregnancy. According to a new government study, U.S. teen birthrates have plunged dramatically in 2009 after a five percent increase from 2005 to 2007. And a report by National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy recognizes “16 and Pregnant,” specifying that 82 percent of teenagers credit the hit show in helping them understand the challenges that come with unexpected parenthood. Bill Albert, a spokesman for the National Campaign, believes that “16 and Pregnant” helps broaden insight into teen pregnancy. “Entertainment media is one of the nation’s favorite punching bags, but we have to acknowledge that when we’re talking about teen pregnancies media can be and often is a force for good, and that is particularly true when it comes to shows like ’16 and Pregnant.’ ” While “16 and Pregnant” has received some media criticism for its apparent glamorization of its subject, Albert stands by the findings of the survey. “Some critics say these shows glamorize teen pregnancy, but our survey data shows that’s not the case,” he points out. “That not only do they not glamorize it, but teens who have seen it suggest it makes the realities of teen parenthood more real to them.” Teen pregnancy leveled off in 2008, but rates declined by six percent the following year — a record low, according to a study from Centers for Disease Prevention and Control released Tuesday (December 21). The decrease cut across all ethnicities and races, with Hispanic teen pregnancy percentages dropping by 10 percent. Not only does Albert think “16 and Pregnant” is a useful showcase for teens, but the spokesperson also believes the program can aide parents in educating their children about the reality of unexpected pregnancy. “What you see on TV, as a parent, isn’t always exactly what you’d want your teen to know or say or see, but it does deflect the conversation from, ‘What are you doing?’ to more of an abstract, and that can be a good way to start conversations,” he explains. “The fact is, this is not your parents’ sex talk, not a one-time white-knuckle conversation, but this should be an 18-year conversation that you’re having with your kids.” Do you think “16 and Pregnant” has helped with the decline in teen pregnancy? Dutch Anti-Piracy Group, With MPAA’s Help, Able To Grab 29 US-Hosted Domains… With No Trial Or Notice

Now that the US government appears to be endorsing the idea of simply seizing domain names without notice( http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20101128/15302012021/who-needs-coica-when-homel… ) to the proprietors of those domains, it appears that others are doing the same as well. TorrentFreak reports that the Dutch anti-piracy group, BREIN, with help from the MPAA, has been able to get 29 different domain names — all hosted in the US — to point to BREIN's homepage instead( http://torrentfreak.com/mpaa-shuts-down-29-bittorrent-and-nzb-sites-101215/ ). The owners of those domains were apparently given no notice and no recourse. It sounds like most of the sites did not host any content but linked to potentially infringing content. Whether or not you believe that simply linking to potentially infringing content should be against the law, we're seeing yet another example of the simple lack of due process and how this may impact other areas. If BREIN can get US domains shut down, what's to stop other countries from doing the same thing? China doesn't like reporting by an American site about China? What's to stop it from trying to “seize” that domain? Even if we grant the idea that many of these domains were engaged in or encouraging unauthorized copying of works covered by copyright, why should BREIN and the MPAA simply get to shut them down without any sort of trial? http://torrentfreak.com/mpaa-shuts-down-29-bittorrent-and-nzb-sites-101215/ Update: TorrentFreak requested a list of the affected domains from BREIN and received this response from Tim Kuik. “No that would amount to free PR for the sites that intend to continue their unlawful activities at another hosting provider. These are not large sites and we want to keep it that way.” In response to a question about how the sites were taken offline: “The sites were taken down by the hosting provider,” said Kuik. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20101215/11300412292/dutch-anti-piracy-group-wi… added by: toyotabedzrock

Poll: Obama Beats Any Republican in 2012

His party got hammered in the midterm election, he's taking heat for compromising with Republicans on taxes and his approval levels are hovering around 45 percent, but a new survey concludes President Obama's prospects for re-election in 2012 are fairly strong. The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll out Thursday finds while only 42 percent of respondents say they'd probably vote for the president if he runs again, just 39 percent say they'd vote for a Republican. Ten percent say it depends who the GOP opponent is. But when you put a Republican name into the equation, the numbers change — in favor of Obama. The president leads former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 47 to 40 percent. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota trails by 20 points, 47 to 27 percent. The president leads former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin 55 to 33 percent. NBC says that 22 percent spread is “an indication that the former Republican vice presidential nominee remains a polarizing figure who actually wins support for Mr. Obama.” The survey finds that nearly three-quarters of Americans personally like the president, even if they don't agree with his stands on the issues. Democratic pollster Peter Hart tells NBC the White House can see this poll as a pretty good review at the half-way point of his first term. “From my point of view, this poll is anything but a lump of coal in the president's Christmas stocking,” said Hart, who conducted the survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff. “But there is a lot of work to be done.” McInturff concludes Obama “retains very strong numbers with a political core constituency.” Another poll out Thursday gauged Obama's re-election chances in eight swing states, most of which he won in 2008: Montana, Virginia, North Carolina, Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio. The Public Policy Polling survey found the president's chances remain good in each state, with Romney the potential candidate who could put up the best fight for Republicans. added by: TimALoftis

92% of Afghans have never heard of 9/11, think U.S. is in country to "destroy Islam"

Note the siege mentality: why the leap to the conclusion that the U.S. must have gratuitously entered Afghanistan in order to “destroy Islam”? And with the U.S. building hospitals and schools and roads in Afghanistan, the notion is laughable — but that never stopped the conspiracy paranoia before. “Think tank: 92% of Afghans never heard of 9/11,” by Daniel Tencer for Raw Story, November 19: 'Fewer than one in 10 Afghans are aware of the 9/11 attacks and their precipitation of the war in Afghanistan, says a study from an international think tank. A report (PDF) from the International Council on Security and Development (ICOS) shows that 92 percent of those surveyed had never heard of the coordinated multiple attacks on US soil on September 11, 2001. It also shows that four in 10 Afghans believe the US is on their soil in order to “destroy Islam or occupy Afghanistan.” To be sure, the survey can't claim to be definitive: It only canvassed men, and relied primarily on respondents from Helmand and Kandahar, the two most war-torn provinces in the country. But the results nonetheless show that Western forces fighting insurgents in Afghanistan have largely failed to connect with the local population. “We need to explain to the Afghan people why we are here, and both show and convince them that their future is better with us than with the Taliban,” ICOS lead field researcher Norine MacDonald said in a statement….' Good luck with that, Norine. added by: crystalman

CBS Slams O’Donnell as ‘Ultra-Conservative’ and Sees Repeat of 1964, Touts Public Siding with Obama on Economy and Taxes

The night after a Tea Party candidate in Delaware stunned the GOP establishment, the CBS Evening News blamed voter “anger,” tried to marginalize Christine O’Donnell as an “ultra-conservative,” relayed the contention of establishment Republicans that Tea Party wins will lead to a re-run of the GOP’s 1964 debacle, and highlighted how more Americans blame George W. Bush over President Barack Obama for the economy followed by how most side with Obama on not extending the current tax rates for those earning $250,000 or more. All in a day’s work for Katie Couric. She led by declaring “American voters are in one angry mood” as “nearly three out of four registered voters say they’re dissatisfied with or angry about what’s going on in Washington,” though the new CBS News/New York Times poll actually found just as many “satisfied” as angry and twice as many “dissatisfied but not angry” over “angry.” In the lead story, Nancy Cordes described how Christine O’Donnell “beat a veteran moderate Congressman who was considered a general election shoo-in” while “polls show O’Donnell’s ultra-conservative social views make her a decided underdog in this blue-leaning state.” Her proof of O’Donnell’s “ultra-conservative” views: a vintage video clip in which O’Donnell sounded eerily like Jimmy Carter: “Lust in your heart is committing adultery.” Following a soundbite of a Delaware Republican saying he’ll vote for the Democrat, Cordes identified O’Donnell’s November opponent sans any ideological tag: “And that’s giving new life to the Democrat in the race, Chris Coons.” Up next, Bob Schieffer ruminated about another 1964-like debacle for Republicans. “It is very much like 1964,” Schieffer contended, when Republicans “threw out all the establishment candidates” and nominated Barry Goldwater who “was far to the right of most of the people in his party, and they lost in a landslide.” So that’s why, Schieffer insisted, “you have establishment Republicans worried about what’s going to happen now in November.” Looking at the public’s views on the economy, Dean Reynolds highlighted how “the country still blames the Bush administration [37%] for the condition of the economy followed by Wall Street [5% blame Obama], and only 27 percent believe congressional Republicans are doing more to improve things, compared to 49 percent who say that about the President.” Plus: “Nor, apparently, is the country with the Republicans on taxes. While the GOP favors extending tax cuts for all income brackets, 53 percent of Americans believe tax cuts should end for those with incomes above $250,000, as the President has proposed.” Unmentioned by Reynolds: The 53 percent level is down nine points since February when it stood at 62 percent. PDF of the survey results . CBSNews.com summary of the “anger” question . CBSNews.com look at the tax cut numbers . Portions of the Wednesday, September 15 CBS Evening News, gathered by the MRC’s Brad Wilmouth: KATIE COURIC: Good evening, everyone. American voters are in one angry mood. It’s evident at the polls and in the polls. Look at this: A CBS News/New York Times poll out tonight finds a record 55 percent of American voters say it’s time for their representative in Congress to go. They don’t like what the incumbents are doing – 58 percent disapprove of the Democrats; 68 percent disapprove of the Republicans. Nearly three out of four registered voters say they’re dissatisfied with or angry about what’s going on in Washington. And some of that feeling was reflected in yesterday’s primaries with victories by candidates supported by the Tea Party…. NANCY CORDES: …O’Donnell becomes the seventh Tea Party-affiliated candidate to defeat a more mainstream Republican in a Senate primary this season. Six Tea Partiers have won primaries for governor. Carl Paladino of New York joined their ranks last night. But Republican leaders are keeping their distance from him, too, after he named his dog his chief of staff and proposed that welfare recipients be housed in unused prisons. CARL PALADINO, NEW YORK REPUBLICAN GUBERNATORIAL NOMINEE: New Yorkers are as mad as hell, and we’re not gonna take it anymore! CORDES: In Delaware, O’Donnell beat a veteran moderate Congressman who was considered a general election shoo-in. Polls show O’Donnell’s ultraconservative social views- CHRISTINE O’DONNELL, DELAWARE REPUBLICAN SENATE NOMINEE, IN OLD VIDEO: Lust in your heart is committing adultery. CORDES: -make her a decided underdog in this blue-leaning state. STEVEN DAVIS, DELAWARE REPUBLICAN RESIDENT: Given Christine O’Donnell’s background, I have a very difficult time supporting her. I think I’d be more likely to cross party lines in this situation. CORDES: And that’s giving new life to the Democrat in the race, Chris Coons. CHRIS COONS, DELAWARE DEMOCRATIC SENATE NOMINEE: Christine O’Donnell is a different sort of Republican in the general election than I expected. CORDES: Republicans have a narrow window to take back the Senate, and it involves picking up 10 seats. If they don’t win in Delaware, that window is all but closed, Katie.  … COURIC: And, Bob, as Robert Gibbs said, and other people have asked, is this going to be a fight for the heart and soul of the Republican party? BOB SCHIEFFER: Oh, I think it very much is just that. I mean, it is very much like 1964. In 1960, Republicans lost narrowly with an establishment candidate, Richard Nixon. They got to 1964, they threw out all the establishment candidates, they threw out their party leaders and they nominated Barry Goldwater who – fine man – but he was far to the right of most of the people in his party, and they lost in a landslide. And that’s why you have establishment Republicans worried about what’s going to happen now in November. … DEAN REYNOLDS: …Other sobering findings for the White House: Only 38 percent think the President has a clear plan for creating jobs, and some 46 percent think the Obama stimulus package has had no impact – 20 percent think it made matters worse. But 63 percent say Mr. Obama is doing about as well as they expected. DOLORES CLARK, POLL PARTICIPANT: It’s too soon to make any final assessment of his presidency. I think he will be better and better as time passes. REYNOLDS: Actually, the country still blames the Bush administration for the condition of the economy followed by Wall Street, and only 27 percent believe congressional Republicans are doing more to improve things, compared to 49 percent who say that about the President. Sam Greco is a retired Chicago detective. Do you think the Republicans have a plan? SAM GRECO, RETIRED DETECTIVE: Nothing that comes to the forefront. And this is what bothers me. REYNOLDS: Nor, apparently, is the country with the Republicans on taxes. While the GOP favors extending tax cuts for all income brackets, 53 percent of Americans believe tax cuts should end for those with incomes above $250,000, as the President has proposed. A mixed report card with the midterms approaching. Dean Reynolds, CBS News, Chicago.
