‘John Carter’ Director Initially ‘Bristled’ At Title Change

‘If you like a movie, heck, you can call it ‘Dirt,’ ‘ Andrew Stanton says of dropping ‘of Mars’ from the title. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Kitsch in “John Carter” Photo: Disney After decades in development limbo, the hero of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel, “John Carter of Mars,” will finally find his way onto the big screen with the guidance of director Andrew Stanton . But when he gets there, he’ll have dropped the “of Mars.” After a rather controversial title change, the classic title “John Carter of Mars” became the shortened and genre-neutral “John Carter.” For fans of the original Burroughs novels, this came as a move away from the beloved source materials, and Stanton admitted to MTV News’ Josh Horowitz that the change concerned him initially as well. “At first, I bristled, to be really honest. You can’t control people’s first impressions as much as you’d like,” he said. “There are just a lot of people that assume that it’s this weird astronaut/ space thing when you have ‘Mars’ in the title.” The change took time to accept, but with it, Stanton found a new angle of the story to explore. “Even then, I wasn’t going to be swayed, but then I realized, ‘Wow, the movie’s really about a guy that becomes John Carter of Mars,'” Stanton said. “I don’t want to reveal any spoilers, but then I sort of thought, ‘All right, so now that actually makes sense. Maybe I can pull something that I haven’t seen people do in a movie before.’ ” But what’s in a name? Stanton said that if he made a movie people can love, then not much. “My feeling is, if you like a movie, heck, you can call it ‘Dirt,’ and they’ll call it whatever for the rest of the time it exists,” Stanton said. The title change was among Disney’s several marketing choices that took heat from fans. But Stanton said he understands the challenge of marketing one of his unorthodox films, like his last movie, “WALL-E.” “Disney’s been changing hands, so it’s been a little bit of all hands on deck, but I feel we’re finally in good hands and we’re settling in,” Stanton said. “It’s not like anything else exactly. I’m used to giving Disney movies that they’re not used to selling, so I knew it would be a bumpy road, to be fair to them.” What do you think of Disney’s decision to drop “of Mars” from the title? Taylor Kitsch Talks ‘All-Or-Nothing’ 2012

Roles in ‘Battleship,’ ‘John Carter’ and ‘Savages’ make the ‘Friday Night Lights’ alum one to watch in 2012. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Kitsch in “John Carter” Photo: Disney Kids are growing up fast these days. One day, they’re playing fullback for the Dillon Panthers. Next thing you know, they’re saving Mars, selling weed and fighting aliens on a battleship. For Taylor Kitsch , 2012 is the year he grows up. A fan favorite from the “Friday Night Lights” television show, Kitsch makes the transition to full-on action star with “John Carter” and “Battleship.” If that weren’t enough, later in the year, he’ll star in “Savages,” a crime film helmed by one of Hollywood’s most formidable directors, Oliver Stone. And Kitsch knows exactly what he’s getting into: “It’s a pretty all-or-nothing year, right?” “All-or-nothing” is about as close as you can get to properly describing the year Kitsch has in front of him. Aside from starring in “FNL” creator Peter Berg’s next film, “Battleship,” Kitsch is smack-dab in the middle of Disney’s big-budget sci-fi epic “John Carter.” When it comes down to it, the fate of “John Carter” may rest firmly on Kitsch’s abs. “Of course, there’s the physicality,” said Kitsch, explaining his revealing wardrobe, comprised mostly of a glorified loincloth. “You’re pretty out there, not going to lie.” Kitsch insisted that the fashion choices never bothered him because it was true to the character. “It felt right, so it wasn’t such a big deal,” he said. Despite the film’s special effects and high budget, Kitsch said there is something much deeper to this story of a transported Civil War captain. “There’s kind of that stigma with big movies that it’s just action,” Kitsch said. “But with this, it’s really just the core of this guy and his journey of reinventing himself and finding himself again.” With such a full plate, Kitsch said he feels a whole mix of emotions, both good and bad. “I think it’s a bit of everything,” he said. “I’m excited. I’m nervous, but I’m also super proud of it, and I can’t wait to show. Especially from ‘John Carter’ to ‘Battleship’ to ‘Savages,’ that’s such a different landscape of a character.” It’s not just you, Taylor. We’re excited too. What are you waiting for? New John Carter Poster: Red Dawn

The new poster for the long-delayed Disney caper John Carter , based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ old series, is awesome in three ways: 1) It is quite red. 2) It is quite bold. 3) It looks like a Super Nintendo/Playstation video game cover. Maybe an RPG featuring shirtless warriors and choppy computer-animated sequences? And the vocals talents of Dana Gould? Or maybe it just resembles the video for Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy.” Whatever, all of these. Click ahead.

Jeremy Renner Wasn’t Really Anyone’s First Pick For New Bourne Series

In a fascinating peek into the sausage factory that is the new Jason Bourne-less Bourne series, Vulture is reporting that Jeremy Renner’s recent casting as the new heir apparent to Jason Bourne came about not because of some great desire for Renner but as part of a grand compromise between director Tony Gilroy and Universal. It seems like Renner wasn’t so much the bowl of porridge that was just right, but the bowl of porridge that was least objectionable.

‘Bang Bang Club’ Stars Talk Meeting Their Real-Life Inspirations

‘It was very tough for them,’ Taylor Kitsch says of photojournalists reliving their pasts. By Kara Warner Taylor Kitsch in “The Bang Bang Club” Photo: Tribeca Film New film “The Bang Bang Club” revolves around the real-life story of four combat photographers — Greg Marinovich, Joao Silva, Kevin Carter and Ken Oosterbroek — who risked their lives to capture the brutality and violence around the first free elections in post-apartheid South Africa in the early ’90s. Taylor Kitsch and Ryan Philippe star as two of the photographers, along with Malin Akerman as Robin Comley, their conflicted newspaper photo editor. When MTV News caught up with Kitsch and Akerman recently, we discussed the topical nature of the film , as well as the emotional aspect involved in meeting the real-life inspirations for the characters they portrayed. “When I first met Greg Marinovich, that was a big one for me, and Joao — obviously playing someone that has taken their own life, it hurts them a lot too,” Kitsch explained of portraying Carter. “It wasn’t that long ago, and obviously these guys went through a lot more than what I have with my best friends. Asking them to talk about that was very hard for them. It turned into quite — it was very tough for them.” Akerman’s meeting with the woman who inspired her character was equally emotionally charged. “I was lucky to have met Robin Comley,” she said. “She’s a fantastic woman, and she actually came to set one day — she tried coming to set and saw some of the characters in costume, and she just lost it. She couldn’t even deal. Like Taylor said, these people, it was like family, so for them to go through this and relive it, I was actually surprised that Greg and Joao were on set pretty much every day reliving everything.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Bang Bang Club.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Jeremy Renner Cast In ‘The Bourne Legacy’

Film is not set to include Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne. By Kara Warner Jeremy Renner Photo: Getty Images After months of speculation, Universal has officially named actor Jeremy Renner as the star of “The Bourne Legacy.” According to Deadline , the two-time Oscar nominee (for “The Hurt Locker” and “The Town”) is expected to “sign on quickly” to play a new character in the spin-off film written and directed by “Bourne” screenwriter Tony Gilroy. Renner will reportedly play an operative from a covert government program that is even more dangerous than the Treadstone brainwashing program that hatched Jason Bourne, memorably played by Matt Damon in the first three hit films. For those who have been following the ups and downs of the “Bourne” saga, Renner’s casting is not at all a surprise, given reports that leaked earlier this month saying he had been offered the role. The actor beat out a slew of talented and buzzworthy contenders, which reportedly included Alex Pettyfer, Taylor Kitsch, Dominic Cooper, Garrett Hedlund and Luke Evans. Gilroy has previously stated that although Damon’s Bourne will not be a part of “Legacy,” he has left the door open for future Bourne-centric films down the road. “The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal,” Gilroy said of his story for “Legacy.” “Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy. … The world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].” Production is said to begin in September.
