Katy Perry’s ‘E.T.’ Video Look Inspired By Jellyfish, Stylist Says

‘I just wanted [Katy] to look really odd … but still fashionable,” Carol Beadle tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in her “E.T.” music video Photo: Capitol Katy Perry leaves Candyfornia for outer space in her latest video, “E.T.” The otherworldly clip follows an alien woman played by the Teenage Dream singer as she falls to a planet to find her lost extraterrestrial lover. While fans are used to seeing Perry in dresses made from cupcakes and cotton candy, this time around she sports flowing gowns, metal body armor and lots of intricate makeup. Stylist Carol Beadle, who worked with director Floria Sigismondi on the style for the video, explained to MTV News that she wanted to take things to a more “avant-garde” level in the clip. “I just wanted [Katy] to look really odd, unreal if we could, but still fashionable,” she said. “I was looking at jellyfishes and amoebas; those words were constantly used and we wanted it to look like a flash of an amoeba and then it coming to life,” Beadle explained about the video’s fashion inspiration. “It’s like falling to the sky and the amoeba brought in the color palette and I wanted to hit it with a bit of color, so that it would pop. But to make it look 2011, it has to have a context and a reference point.” While Beadle kept Perry in mind when thinking up looks for the video, she also wanted to make sure that the fashions would fit the clip’s themes and story. “I tried to see her body type and her personality and how she’s perceived but, really, the main focus was on the director and I and making the story work and making her the lead,” she said. “I designed her first outfit and last outfit,” Beadle continued, adding about the flowing red dress Perry is first seen wearing, as she falls from space to the planet where her lover waits for her, “We wanted her to look like she was on fire and falling from the sky.” Soon the red dress becomes this “one massive white piece” by Viktor & Rolf, which, Beadle said, was “one of the most interesting pieces from the runway.” Perry’s next look is a flowing gown combined with metal pieces. “I built all the metal,” Beadle revealed. “All the skirts and stuff were designed and built by me.” While Perry went spacey glam in the video, her “E.T.” collaborator Kanye West kept his look decidedly Yeezy. “I went and talked to him and went through his things and his stylist had gone shopping,” Beadle said. “I’ve worked with him before [on ‘Love Lockdown’]. I did one of his other videos. He’s got very good style. I always find him very lovely. He’s got good taste, a good eye.” Related Videos MTV First: Katy Perry’s ‘E.T.’ Related Artists Katy Perry

Katy Perry Says She Swiped ‘E.T.’ From Three 6 Mafia

Perry’s latest single was actually meant for the Academy Award-winning rap group. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Katy Perry has already said that when she was writing songs for her Teenage Dream album, her goal was to “make a different ‘movie’ for each song.” So it’s ironic that her latest single, “E.T.,” was actually meant for a group who knows a thing or two about movies … and they’ve got the Academy Award to prove it. “I’ll tell you, it’s funny … this song, I remember writing with Max Martin and Dr. Luke, and there’s this producer they wrote with, named Ammo as well, and they were just showing me different samples of songs or tracks or beats, and they accidentally pulled up this beat, and it was for Three 6 Mafia,” Perry told MTV News. “I heard it and I always knew I wanted to write this futuristic, alienistic song, and they pulled it up and I was like, ‘Wait, I can wrap my head around this. I know this seems like a long shot, but I think I have the perfect material to put on top of this sound.’ And I did, and it really worked out perfectly.” So if you’re one of those Katy fans who’s a bit mystified by the abrupt change of pace of “E.T.” — and its equally left-of-center video — well, then you can sort of understand why: Deep down, it’s actually a Three 6 Mafia track. “It’s a whole different vibe for me. It’s kind of a bit harder, it does have that urban feel underneath it. I think that’s why Kanye added even another layer on top of it,” Perry explained. “And it has … amazing … sonics — I mean, there’s so much to it, there’s a lot in the song if you really put your headphones on and sink into the song.” And that’s just part of what drew Perry to the track in the first place. After all, on Teenage Dream, she set out to make movies … and though it may confound some of her fans, “E.T.” is perhaps the most wonderfully odd movie she’s ever made. And she knows it. “Even teasing people with different images from ‘E.T.,’ people are so perplexed, ” she laughed. “They’re like, ‘Katy Perry, you’re supposed to be Betty Boop! You’re supposed to be wearing pink!’ It’s exciting to be able to push my audience, to be like, ‘There’s always more, I’ve got all of this hidden up my sleeve that I’ve really longed to show people.'” What did you think of Katy’s new video? By MTV News staff Katy Perry Photo: MTV News When Katy Perry’s “E.T.” video , featuring Kanye West, premieres on MTV and MTV.com on Thursday, fans should expect a decidedly cinematic experience. “With Teenage Dream, the record in whole, I knew I wanted to give so many different flavors, so many different ideas, and just make a different ‘movie’ for each song,” Perry told MTV News of her latest album, which has already spawned clips for “California Gurls,” “Firework” and the title track. “I feel like I’ve done that.” The “E.T.” video will premiere at noon Thursday on MTV.com, VH1.com and LogoTV.com. Then, “MTV First: Katy Perry’s ‘E.T.’ ” will bow on air at 7:53 p.m. ET before tossing to an MTV.com live stream, featuring MTV News correspondent Sway’s exclusive chat with Perry, an interview with director Floria Sigismondi and reaction from Perry’s fans. Perry has noticed a shift in public opinion about her with the release of each Teenage Dream video, and she’s thinking “E.T.” will be no exception. “It’s interesting to see a lot of the commentary that goes along with growth,” she marveled. “People are like, ‘OK, I like her,’ finally, or like, ‘Damn, I hate to admit it, but we’re on the Katy Perry train,’ which is really exciting, and i feel like I worked really hard for that. “I knew starting with ‘I Kissed a Girl’ that it might have taken a little bit longer to get everybody just onboard the Katy Perry train, I guess,” she added. “But now, I’m having so much fun and I get to be so creative and try different things and expand, and I never play it safe — in any way, really.” Don’t miss the premiere of Katy Perry’s “E.T.” video, featuring Kanye West, at 7:53 p.m. ET Thursday on MTV, followed by our live “MTV First” interview with Katy Perry on MTV.com! Kanye West Joins Katy Perry On ‘E.T.’

Fourth Teenage Dream single to be released this week. By Jocelyn Vena Kanye West and Katy Perry Photo: EMI In her next single from Teenage Dream, “E.T.,” Katy Perry sings about falling in love with an alien to a spacey dance track. And unlike in the version on the album, the radio version features the extraterrestrial stylings of Kanye West. The rapper not only makes a cameo on the song, but he will also appear in the video alongside the California Gurl. The video was shot by “The Runaways” director Floria Sigismondi , who is known for putting her dark, feminine spin on clips for artists like Christina Aguilera, Marilyn Manson and the White Stripes. Little else is known about West’s contribution to the song and the video, but in a photo released by Perry’s label, Kanye appears in regular street clothes while Perry looks like perhaps she’s playing the alien character she sings about in the song — complete with pastel-colored makeup and giant braided headpiece. In fact, the look harks back to some of the costumes former Sigismondi collaborator Bj

Darren Criss Talks About Life Before Glee, Relating to Blaine, and Old Hollywood

It’s rare that an Internet star and self-described theater junkie can be called “debonair,” but 23-year-old Glee heartthrob Darren Criss fits the bill. The San Francisco native catapulted to offline fame with a suave rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” during Glee ‘s “Never Been Kissed” episode, and two months later, he shares an EW cover with co-star Chris Colfer. Just shy of Glee ‘s big post-Super Bowl episode this Sunday, we caught up with Criss to discuss his character Blaine, ambitions, and the movie scene he loves most.
