T.I. And B.o.B Wave Grand Hustle Flag At SXSW

Grand Hustle artists were joined by Wale, Meek Mill, Curren$y at Warner Music showcase. By Nadeska Alexis T.I. and B.o.B perform at SXSW Photo: Universal Pictures AUSTIN, Texas — There was no shortage of options in Austin, Texas, on Thursday night if you happened to be a hip-hop fan at SXSW on the hunt for a good show. While Lil Wayne and YMCMB put their talents on display at Austin Music Hall, just five minutes down the road T.I. , B.o.B , Wale , Meek Mill and Curren$y brought down the house at the Warner Sound showcase. MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway hosted the event at La Zona Rosa, where Grand Hustle Records had a triumphant night and Maybach Music Group continued to rep their expanding roster. Curren$y, Kirko Bangz and XV got the packed house adequately warmed up for a night that easily stretched into the wee hours of Friday morning (March 16). Grand Hustle announced their arrival with B.o.B’s raucous entrance to “Beast Mode,” backed by a live band. His next number, “How Bout Dat,” commanded a fleet of backup dancers. He followed that with the upbeat single “Magic” off his debut album, B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. The song faded into a dubstep beat, pushing the dancers front and center to showcase their moves before the venue finally went dark. With nothing to see or hear, the crowd hung back, wondering what would be next. That would be Mr. Grand Hustle himself. “They say Grand Hustle is in the building,” Tip announced over the mic, followed by a long pause before “I’m Back” came booming through the speakers. “Rubberband Man” was a natural choice to follow, sending the crowd soaring along with “U Don’t Know Me.” Tip took a break only to plug his upcoming eighth album, Trouble Man, which is tentatively due out this summer, before continuing with fan favorites like “What You Know” and one of his more recent singles, “Pyro.” From there, B.o.B and T.I. continued to tag-team the set, and Tip was proud to announce that this was the first time he and his signee had “done a full show together.” Playboy Tre was on hand for “Bet I Bust.” “Don’t Let Me Fall” was delivered on acoustic guitar, and T.I. even threw in “Whatever You Like” to round out Bobby Ray’s “Airplanes” and “Strange Clouds,” the title track of his upcoming album. It was already after midnight when MMG rappers Meek Mill, Stalley and Wale finally took the stage. Meek and Stalley were up first, with energetic singles like “I’ma Boss” aiming to keep the crowd going. Wale did his part to keep the energy alive, performing his hits “Lotus Flower Bomb” and “Slight Work” and commanding a guest appearance from Travis Porter. The D.C. rapper closed out the night with his street anthem “Bait” and the cult favorite “No Hands.” Related Artists T.I. B.o.B Wale Meek Mill

Fun. Call ‘We Are Young’ Success ‘Weird Icing’ On Cake

Band talks to MTV News backstage at SXSW about their breakout single, which sits at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. By James Montgomery Fun. performs at the 8th Annual MtvU Woodie Festival Photo: C Flanigan/ FilmMagic AUSTIN, Texas — Last week, Fun. became the first rock act in nearly four years to ascend to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, as their breakout hit “We Are Young” overtook Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” as the #1 song in the country. And while that was certainly shocking, this week Fun. proved that their success was no fluke, as “Young” remains atop the charts for a second consecutive week. And when MTV News caught up with the guys backstage at the mtvU Woodie Awards (where they’d subsequently play the song to rapturous applause), they let us in on a little secret: They can’t believe any of this is happening either. “It’s weird. It’s amazing. Actually, the last year, ever since we started making the album Some Nights, has been a daydream that has come true,” frontman Nate Ruess said. “I mean, in 10 years of us doing this, collectively, we never thought we’d have a #1 song. Probably since we were 14 years old, we realized those type of things were impossible.” “We thought we were too old, like, a decade ago,” guitarist Jack Antonoff laughed. And yet, here they are, with the #1 song in the country and an album that only continues to pick up speed. And though it’s certainly a dream come true, Fun. are trying very hard to keep their heads to the ground, and push on to bigger and better things. While still remaining humble, of course. “We’re used to being the bridesmaids, and we always wanted to be the bridesmaids, and I hope we can still continue to be the bridesmaids, it’s who we are,” Ruess said. “Any of this stuff is just some sort of weird icing on a very weird-ass cake.” Then again, there are some definite perks to being #1 … like no longer having to engage in awkward conversations with family members. Because after a decade spent slogging it out in different bands, Fun. have finally earned the approval of the most important of critics: their parents. “The weirdest part is our extended family now feels like we’re doing OK,” Antonoff said. “Forever our entire extended family has been like ‘Are you OK? Maybe there’s a career in management.'” The best of the 2012 Woodie Awards will air Sunday, March 18 at 8 p.m. ET on MTV and mtvU. Lil Wayne Brings His YMCMB Family To SXSW

Mystikal, Birdman, Cory Gunz and others help Weezy kick off his Mountain Dew partnership in Austin. When Lil Wayne took over the Austin Music Hall for his SXSW show in Texas on Thursday night, the rapper-turned-skateboarder had the venue draped in banners upon banners, shouting out his team, his new clothing line and his new partnership with Mountain Dew. Earlier in the day, Wayne invited his pro skateboard friends — including Paul Rodriguez and Theotis Beasley — to get their grind on on the top floor of the venue while the Mountain Dew-sponsored show was being prepped. By showtime later that night, the boys were all freshly prepped for their closing appearance at the concert. (For photos from the concert, click here.) And while Wayne saved his skateboard family to wrap the night, his YMCMB family members came out to open the show and made brief appearances throughout his set. U.K. singer Jay Sean hit the stage early, along with Lil Chuckee and recent Cash Money signee Mystikal, who gave the crowd a taste of his hits including “Here I Go” and “Shake Ya Ass.” Wayne finally hit the stage around 12:30 a.m., decked out in his Trukfit gear, with skateboard in hand, bringing a burst of energy for fans who’d already started a few “Weezy” chants in anticipation of his performance. He kicked things off with “I’m Goin’ In,” and “A Milli,” with head banging and dreads flying everywhere. During his one-hour set, Wayne gave the crowd some words of inspiration on falling and getting back up. “Life is like skateboarding,” he said. He later dropped another one-liner, “It’s not what you do, it’s how you do it,” admitting to the crowd that they’d just participated in a commercial shoot for his new DeWeezy campaign with Mountain Dew. With that out of the way, there were still plenty of hits left to go around, including “She Will” and “Blunt Blowin’,” plus a few more guest appearances. Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga were all noticeably absent from the show, but after giving them a shout-out, Wayne brought out a few more YMCMB members including Shanell, Bow Wow, Gudda Gudda, Mack Maine and Birdman, who performed his single “Y.U. Mad.” Despite Drake’s absence, Wayne delivered his verse on “The Motto” and saved Tha Carter IV single “6 Foot, 7 Foot” for the finale. Maybe the most surprising cameo of the night came from rapper Cory Gunz, who was recently arrested for gun possession. The young Gunz joined Wayne and his crew of pro skateboarders onstage to assist on the track before calling it a night. SXSW Proves That Indie Chicks Like to Get Naked Too [PIC]

Since its founding in 1987, South by Southwest has evolved from a small independent music festival into what can best be described as “Hipster Spring Break” as thousands of hard-partying kids with ironic haircuts descend on Austin, Texas for ten days of debauchery (as personified by the topless partygoer above). This year, Fleshlight is even sending porn stars Tori Black and Lisa Ann to wander the streets of Austin and take pictures of festival-goers with their new mascot, Mr. Bator…no, seriously . But don’t worry if your travels won’t take you anywhere near Austin this weekend- just check out Mr. Skin’s Hipster Chicks Nude playlist and you’ll be ogling more indie tits than the door guy at the super-secret Pitchfork showcase. Well, almost. Image courtesy of Village Voice Media

SXSW 2012 Kicks Off With ‘Cabin In The Woods’

On the South by Southwest film festival red carpet, Joss Whedon tells MTV News the flick had ‘a very weirdly organic genesis.’ By Kara Warner Joss Whedon at SXSW Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images The annual South by Southwest film festival kicked off in splendid, if slightly soggy, fashion Friday night with the world premiere of “Cabin in the Woods.” Amidst unseasonably chilly temperatures and intermittent downpours in Austin, Texas, the film’s cast and crew braved the elements to walk the red carpet ahead of the highly anticipated horror film’s packed screening. “We are so excited to be premiering at South by Southwest: We really couldn’t have asked for a better place to premiere this film,” first-time director Drew Goddard told MTV News. “We feel like we’re a South by Southwest film, so we’re happy to be here. It worked out well for us. “I feel like South by Southwest has a swagger, a rock and roll feel to it. When you hear those words, you feel like their pushing the edge of what’s acceptable in society and I feel like — I hope — that we did the same,” Goddard added, speaking to the film’s intrigue and appeal. “Apparently, South by Southwest is a really rad festival, and I think this is a really rad film, so it’s a good fit,” star Anna Hutchison said. “Also Joss is really excited about it, so if he’s excited, you know that it’s a good thing.” Speaking of co-writer and fan-boy favorite Joss Whedon, the “Avengers” director and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” mastermind said that the long-delayed and slightly troubled backstory surrounding “Cabin” makes it even more perfect for a SXSW showing. “It was created very independently, and it came up very organically,” Whedon said. “It wasn’t churned out of a studio system. The fact that MGM, Mary Parent was taking a lot of risks. She let us shoot word-for-word exactly what we wrote. That’s the movie we made. Then obviously it had some troubles, and Lionsgate came in, and it had a very weirdly organic genesis.” Co-star Bradley Whitford summed up his SXSW excitement with his love for its host city: “I love, love, love Austin — even when it feels like Iceland,” he said with a smile from under an umbrella. “I love this town, so I was thrilled to be able to come here.” He said “Cabin” has “a very young, hip, humorous, smart, astute thing going on.” Kristen Connolly added: “It’s awesome to know that people are excited about the movie, and it’s awesome to be here. It’s such a cool festival, I’ve wanted to come to it for ages, so I’m thrilled to be here.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Super Tuesday Turnout ‘A Little Disappointing’ To Boston Student

Mitt Romney is expected to take the Massachusetts primary, but experts are predicting record-low turnout. By Jacob Soboroff Jacob Soboroff looks for young voters on Super Tuesday in Boston, Massachusetts Photo: Adam Murphy/MTV News BOSTON — What happens when a reporter goes on the hunt for young voters in a state with 969,000 of them on Super Tuesday ? He finds two — and a guy waiting for a bus — at the state’s largest university. At Boston University, over the course of the lunch hour, only two students came into the polling place at Myles Standish Hall to exercise their civic duty. Ben Nichols and Simon Wentzell cast ballots at a polling place on campus where a quick walk-through revealed everything was going smoothly — but the number of poll workers outnumbered voters by far. So where is everybody? Nichols, an independent voter who supports Texas Congressman Ron Paul, said he wasn’t surprised. “It’s a primary. They don’t usually get nearly as many voters as an actual election,” he said. As to why he turned out, the first-time voter said, “To be honest, I live right there. That’s my room. So it kind of helps.” Wentzell, a member of the BU College Democrats, was also greeted by a lack of fellow voters. “It’s been pretty empty, seems like, so far,” he said. The low turnout didn’t get the best of the 19-year-old’s political optimism, though. “It’s a little disappointing. But it’s a little early and we are one of many districts.” A Boston elections official tells me — no joke — that there was a 2.5 percent voter turnout citywide as of noon. In former Governor Mitt Romney’s home state. Then again, the traditionally blue state wasn’t expected to put up record-high numbers in a year when only the GOP side of the equation is being decided. With an incumbent Democrat waiting in the wings in the form of President Obama, many Massachusetts voters appear to be keeping their powder dry for the general election in November. While he is looking at potential runner-up finishes in a number of Southern states and an uncomfortably close race in key swing state Ohio , Romney is expected to cruise to an easy victory in Massachusetts, where 41 delegates are at stake on a day when a total of 419 delegates are in the mix. On the sidewalk outside, though, as he squatted waiting for the bus, Aaron S. wouldn’t be adding to that vote total because he said he wasn’t voting and wasn’t interested. “Around 11 o’clock — or is it 12? — most people are already in class,” he explained. Dressed in a pair of SpongeBob SquarePants pajama bottoms, the physics major said it wasn’t a matter of Boston being a Democratic town or kids getting ready for spring break that was keeping turnout down. “I spend most of my time in the lab,” he said. With that, he got on the bus in front of the polling place and rolled away. MTV has Super Tuesday covered, with reporters on the scene in Georgia, Ohio and Massachusetts! Mac Miller, Machine Gun Kelly Talk Woodie Noms

Miller and MGK, along with EDM artist Steve Aoki, talk about getting set for mtvU awards show, which returns to SXSW. By Nadeska Alexis Mac Miller Photo: Getty Images The mtvU Woodie Awards are set to be bigger and better than ever this year: The annual awards show will once again take place in Austin, Texas, at South by Southwest, where the first-ever Woodies Festival will be launched. The current lineup of performers includes Santigold , Childish Gambino, A$AP Rocky and EDM artist Steve Aoki, who is also nominated for Woodie awards alongside Mac Miller and Machine Gun Kelly. All three artists had plenty to say about their nominations during a Woodies conference call on Thursday. Machine Gun Kelly, who won MTV’s 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC award, is nominated for Breaking Woodie , and the Bad Boy rapper is taking a rather optimistic approach to the contest. “I’m just so focused on that award and I’m trying to speak it into existence,” MGK said. “I’ve been mixing my debut album, and I’ve got a DMX collaboration and so many others, but there were people we fought to make sure we finally got them. We spoke it into existence and we really believed in it. It was the same thing with the Breakthrough award. No one expected us to win, we were the super-underdogs, so I’m just trying to speak [this award] into existence. And if I win it, my speech is going to be hilarious.” In addition to performing, Aoki is also nominated for the EDM Effect Woodie award, a new category that recognizes artists who are pushing boundaries in the electronic music arena. “The scene in America is really vibrant — a lot of the international artists are most excited to play out here,” Aoki said of EDM’s growth in the States. “Sometimes their biggest markets are out here. America is really juicy with electronic music right now. “I’m on this 60-day bus tour across the U.S. There’s no way I could’ve done this three or four years ago,” Aoki added. “We’re definitely at a really impactful time for our music scene, and I think this is just the start.” Pittsburgh rapper Miller made a splash this year with both his debut album, Blue Slide Park, and his subsequent tours, thanks to an adept social media following. He’s been nominated for both Woodie of the Year and Performing Woodie. “It’s crazy, it makes me feel like there’s no way I’m going to win,” Mac said of receiving nods in categories that include veterans like Jay-Z. “But it’s just great to be nominated with people that I grew up being some of my favorite artists. It makes me feel like I’m in the big leagues.” The Woodies invade SXSW on March 15 with the Woodies Festival. The best of the 2012 mtvU Woodies will air on MTV and mtvU on March 18 at 8 p.m. ET.
