Biggie To Bon Jovi: Killa Kyleon’s Many Inspirations

Candy Paint N Texas Plates 2 has a wide range of samples, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting from James Smith Killa Kyleon Photo: Ray Tamarra/ Getty Images Main Pick Artist : Killa Kyleon and Rapid Ric Representing : Houston Mixtape : Candy Paint & Texas Plates 2 Real Spit : Killa Kyleon may still be making a name from himself in rap, but the Houston MC is no rookie. The seasoned Southern spitter got his start running alongside Big Pokey, Chris Ward and DJ Screw’s Screwed Up Click, before really making an impact with Slim Thug’s group Boss Hogg Outlawz. It’s his gruff vocal tone, butter flow and hard-nosed lyrics that make Killa Kyleon a fan favorite. On his latest mixtape, Candy Paint N Texas Plates 2, Killa puts it all on display. With the tape’s 21 soul-drenched tracks, Killa Ky hooks up notable producers like Lex Luger, Cookin’ Soul and Cy Frye to lay his sound bed. On “Top Down,” Killa spits over a dreamy loop that incorporates a small sample from the Notorious B.I.G.’s 1995 song “Who Shot Ya,” so it’s only right that Kyleon tries his hand over the classic Biggie beat on the next track. His inspiration isn’t all rap. On “Bodies Hit the Floor,” Killa recruits Bun B and producer Lex Luger to add a hip-hop twist to Drowning Pool’s 2001 metal track “Bodies.” It doesn’t stop there: On “Hustler’s Prayer,” Big K.R.I.T. samples Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” as Ky goes in lyrically against his rap competitors. (“Lyin’ about they real on these records in front of cameramen/ Run a background check, them n—as fake as mannequins.” Mac Miller joins in on “Come on Baby,” and “Letter to Pimp C” is a heartfelt dedication track to the fallen UGK pioneer. Whether from the Deep South, Northeast or West Coast, Killa Kyleon’s Candy Paints & Texas Plates 2 has something for every hip-hop fan. Joints to Check For

Pure Comedy: Rick Perry Buys Hundreds Of Florida Voters Breakfast And Still Can’t Beat Herman Cain In “Straw Poll” Vote

These guys… Pizza mogul Herman Cain shocked pundits to win an early test vote in Florida, beating GOP frontrunners Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. Despite Perry buying hundreds of activists breakfasts on the sidelines before heading to Michigan, he came in second with only 15.4 per cent of the vote. Cain, who owns Godfather’s Pizza, captured 37.1 percent of the vote at Saturday’s Presidency 5 straw poll in Orlando, with Texas Governor Rick Perry coming in second with 15.4 percent. Mitt Romney came in third with 14 percent and Rick Santorum followed with 10.88 percent. While all declared candidates were on the ballot, the first-tier candidates did not compete. Perry bought hundreds of activists’ breakfasts on the sidelines before heading to Michigan. Romney and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota both left Florida before the voting began and their campaigns discounted the straw poll’s role in the campaign. Bachmann finished eighth with 1.51 percent in the straw poll. The results were unlikely to shuffle the campaign’s standings. Instead, they were mostly a popularity contest among the delegates selected by local party organisations. But previous straw polls have predicted the Republican nominee. Ronald Reagan won in 1979, George H.W. Bush in 1987 and Kansas Senator Bob Dole in 1995. The Republican Party of Florida, however, has not organized the test vote in recent years. As much as we hope this doesn’t mean Herman Cain is gonna be the Republican Party’s candidate, it does make for a funny Rick Perry story. Source

Student Suspended For Saying “I’m A Christian And I Think Gay Is Wrong” [Video]

Thank God the Bossip staff doesn’t have this problem… An honors student in Fort Worth, Texas, was sent to the principal’s office and punished for telling a classmate that he believes homosexuality is wrong. Holly Pope said she was “absolutely stunned” when she received a telephone call from an assistant principal at Western Hills High School informing her that her son, Dakota Ary, had been sent to in-school suspension. “Dakota is a very well-grounded 14-year-old,” she told Fox News Radio noting that her son is an honors student, plays on the football team and is active in his church youth group. “He’s been in church his whole life and he’s been taught to stand up for what he believes.” And that’s what got him in trouble. Dakota was in a German class at the high school when the conversation shifted to religion and homosexuality in Germany. At some point during the conversation, he turned to a friend and said that he was a Christian and “being a homosexual is wrong. “It wasn’t directed to anyone except my friend who was sitting behind me,” Dakota told Fox. “I guess [the teacher] heard me. He started yelling. He told me he was going to write me an infraction and send me to the office.” Dakota was sentenced to one day in-school suspension – and two days of full suspension. His mother was flabbergasted, noting that her son had a spotless record, was an honor student, volunteered at his church and played on the school football team.

Are You Ready For A Disaster?

Read more from the original source:

Ever heard the saying, “Stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready?” . . . Well, with the ambush of earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis and tornadoes we’ve experienced since the beginning of the year, you should’ve seen enough by now to know how devastating the effects of any disaster – natural or man-made, can be. Since January, FEMA has confirmed over 80 major disaster declarations in the United States alone. Regardless of whether you live in a typical disaster zone or not, the reality is you are now fair game for experiencing one. So, the question is whether you’ll take steps now to safe guard your family in case of emergency or wait until disaster actually strikes. President Obama declared September as National Preparedness Month , appropriately so as the 10th anniversary of 9/11 lingers. In his proclamation, the President encouraged “all Americans to recognize the importance of preparedness and observe this month by working together to enhance our national security, resilience, and readiness.” When preparing for a natural disaster, the necessities that usually come to mind are food, water and shelter. While physical safety is definitely a primary concern, few tend to think of finances as the next major priority. So, in addition to checking out sites like www.ready.gov for physical preparedness, below you’ll find a few tips to get your financial house in order in case of catastrophe. 1. Get it together. The last thing you want to do in the event of an emergency is scurry through papers in your kitchen’s junk drawer. Create a filing system that allows you to get all of your documents together in one, organized place. 2. Take inventory. Maintain an updated inventory of all valuables along with serial numbers, warranty information, photos, and even videos, if possible. Some people walk through their home with a video camera to document everything. Having an inventory is going to save you lots of headaches in the event of a disaster which produces subsequent insurance claims. Remember, however, to keep the list, photos and videos off-site for obvious reasons. READ MORE Is It Time To Start Christmas Shopping? 10 Ways To Avoid Overdraft Fees

Meet Annie Ilonzeh: “Charlie’s” First Black Angel [EXCLUSIVE]

Read the original post:

Annie Ilonzeh is one tough cookie.  After an exhausting 15 hour shoot the night before, the actress still manages to find the time to sign up for an early  Saturday morning phone interview to chat about her role as Kate Prince in  the iconic “Charlie’s Angels” franchise.  After getting her feet wet in the biz as Maya Ward on daytime sudser “General Hospital”, the stunning biracial beauty  now has the distinction of being the very first African-American “Angel.”  Not bad for a girl from Grapevine, Texas, whose strict Nigerian father gave her an ultimatum: to make it as an actress in Hollywood in one year, or come back home. Ilonzeh shares her intense audition process, working with Hollywood powerhouse Drew Barrymore, and why she proudly waves her “curly girl” flag high with The Urban Daily . Tell us about your character Kate Prince on “Charlie’s Angels.” Kate Prince is an ex-cop detective turned dirty.  And now Charlie has given her a second chance as an Angel, an attempt at redemption.  Throughout the series, her overall objection is to seek redemption.  She also has other motivations like trying to seek validation and seek approval from the other Angels and Bosley.  And then her ex-fiance (Isaiah Mustufa) pops into the picture, which creates all this new tension. What was the audition process like? I was given the opportunity to audition back in November 2010.  I didn’t have a script but the Charlie’s Angels franchise is iconic.  When I read the breakdown of the character I fell in love with the project immediately.  I found so many similarities between Kate and myself: we’re both athletic, both very strong mentally.  There’s also the relationship Kate has with the other Angels—and I come from a family with four sisters, so I understand the sisterhood.  We’re also the same in knowing we have flaws, that we make mistakes and using those experiences to turn it into something positive.  So between Fall 2010 and February 2011 I had about six auditions.  I finally landed the part and started shooting in March.  It was a tough process but like Kate, it shows that we’re tough and we don’t give up. Drew Barrymore is the Executive Producer of the series–have you met her? How involved has she been in this project? Drew is very involved.  She was there at every one of my auditions.  She was very charming and would give me suggestions.  She’s a very good director and it’s a pleasure working with her.  She’s like that veteran Angel and you look up to her. What kind of training did you have to undergo to prepare for the role? A lot, actually. I’m a gym rat; I”ll lift weights or hit the treadmill.  I like to explore different types of extreme exercising.  For this role we had to do specific training like martial arts, scuba diving and gun training.  My character’s specialty is martial arts so she knows kung-fu, jujitsu That was really different for me because I come from a basketball background.  So I had to change the muscle memory. The gun training was fun though.  As my co-star Minka Kelly likes to say “We’re trained assassins now!” Do you think your newfound combat skills would allow you to defend yourself if you ever found yourself in danger in real life? At the end of the day you never never if you’re going to go into flight or fight mode but I would definitely be more confident in defending myself. You are the first African-American angel in the “Charlie’s Angels” franchise.  What kind of responsibility do you feel in the representation of black women on television? In the beginning I didn’t really think about it.  My mother is White and my father emigrated here from Nigeria, so I didn’t look at it color wise.  I don’t see a distinction between myself, Minka and Rachael (Taylor).  It took me a while to realize it is an accomplishment. It’s great to set a stage to tell women that no matter your color or nationality, you can do it.  I want African-Americans to know that with Obama in office, there’s no ceiling anymore.  Sometimes it might feel like that, but we have to keep pushing and that’s what makes us strong as a people. Let’s talk about the hair.  When you landed the role of Kate Prince, was there ever a discussion in how you would wear your hair? Yeah, we did talk about it like “So, what can we do with this kind of hair?”  Women are embracing their natural hair, which is great, but we don’t always do that as African-American women. Sometimes we’ll perm it or put some tracks in it, which is awesome because we like play and explore.  I wear my hair natural, but I have a few pieces I’ll use when I go undercover on the show.  But the producers want me to wear my hair natural, to be true to Annie, instead of washing me into a different person, of what society thinks is more appealing. As a black actress in Hollywood, What would you say to women who are worried about not being accepted or seen as beautiful when wearing their hair in its natural state? I would say go for it.  You see women who shave their head and  think that is the most beautiful thing.  You should wear your hair however you feel comfortable.  You might see a woman with long straight flowing hair down her back and there might be a little African-American girl who knows her hair will never grow that long.  If you’ve got a mini-fro or a kitchen in the back, if you want to put a little heat on it, just embrace it and keep it movin’.   I wake up with dreds some mornings because my hair locks up, but I just work with it.  You’re never going to please everyone, so you should find your own beauty. 2011 Emmys Ruled By ‘Modern Family’

‘Mad Men,’ ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Mildred Pierce’ also snag big awards. By Jocelyn Vena “Modern Family” castmembers Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen at the 2011 Emmy Awards Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images On Sunday night (September 18), TV’s biggest stars turned up at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles to see who would go home with hardware and who would leave empty-handed. The night’s hostess, “Glee” star Jane Lynch, opened the show with a musical number that featured “Star Trek” star Leonard Nimoy and a slew of other stars, like Randy Jackson and Jon Hamm, along with his “Mad Men” crew, singing about the glories of TV and the perils of awards shows. “I know this feels stupid and schlocky and already feels overly long,” Lynch joked in song. Lynch’s “Glee” alter ego Sue Sylvester, in her signature tracksuit, eventually made an appearance, and the hostess did something the show’s fans have been waiting for: She slushied Coach Sylvester. During the comedy portion of the night, “Modern Family” owned, starting with Julie Bowen beating out co-star Sofia Vergara for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. “I don’t know what I’m going to talk about in therapy now; I won something!” she joked. The Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy category was filled with “Modern Family” actors, but it was Bowen’s TV husband Ty Burrell who took it home, joking, “I have a job where every day I go to work in full makeup.” “Welcome back to the ‘Modern Family’ Awards!” Lynch joked when the show came back from break. “We decided to throw them into the drama category just to see what happens.” Charlie Sheen presented Outstanding Lead Actor In a Comedy Series to “Big Bang Theory” star Jim Parsons. After all the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy nominees got onstage and received a standing ovation, the Emmy went to Melissa McCarthy for her work on “Mike and Molly.” In addition to an Emmy, she got a bouquet of roses and a tiara. She told the room, “Wow, it’s my first and best pageant ever.” “The Amazing Race” won for Outstanding Reality Competition right before the Lonely Island crew took to the stage , along with a number of A-listers like Michael Bolton, Akon, John Stamos, Ed Helms and Maya Rudolph, for a medley of their tunes like “I Just Had Sex,” “3-Way” and “Jack Sparrow.” “Glee” star Lea Michele and “Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder then presented Outstanding Directing in a Variety, Music or Comedy Series to Don Roy King for “Saturday Night Live.” The vampy Anna Paquin and Scott Caan presented the Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy series award to “The Daily Show,” which won for the ninth year in a row. As the night turned more dramatic, more and more shows got in the winning mix. Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama went to Margo Martindale for her turn on the FX series “Justified.” Martin Scorsese took home his first-ever Emmy, winning Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for “Boardwalk Empire.” Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series went to Peter Dinklage for his work on “Game of Thrones.” “Wow, I followed Martin Scorsese,” he gushed. “My heart is pounding; you are a legend. … I would like to thank my dog sitter, whose name is Kitty,” he later joked. Julianna Margulies won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her turn on “The Good Wife.” Drew Barrymore passed the torch to the new “Charlie’s Angels” as they handed out the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series to Kyle Chandler for the final season of “Friday Night Lights.” Chandler thanked “the people of Austin, Texas, who welcomed us into their homes.” Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Mini Series or Movie went to Maggie Smith for “Dowager Countess of Grantham,” while Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie went to “The Kennedys” star Barry Pepper. Both Smith and Pepper weren’t there to accept their awards. It was all about “Mildred Pierce” in the remaining Mini Series or Movie categories. Outstanding Supporting Actor went to Guy Pearce, who teased, “This was really a delightful experience making ‘Mildred Pierce’: I got to have sex with Kate Winslet many, many times and I didn’t know it would result in this,” he said holding his trophy. It was a delightful night for Kate Winslet as well, who won Outstanding Lead Actress for “Mildred Pierce. She seemed pretty stunned as she took the stage, saying, “This means such a great deal to all of us!” Next, Outstanding Mini Series or Movie went to “Downton Abbey (Masterpiece),” while Outstanding Drama Series went to “Mad Men.” “I did not think that was going to happen,” “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner said. “We are so grateful. President Obama Addresses Employment Head On With Interactive One Team

Read this article:

Earlier this week our sister sites, “ Hello Beautiful “, “ NewsOne ” and “ The Urban Dail y” participated in hosting an  interactive conversation about the state of the union  with top Aides in the White House. The discussion ended with a surprise visit from the President answering questions directly for over 15 minutes. The forum, titled “Open for Questions with Interactive One,” featured various administration officials discussing how the administration’s polices have affected and will affect the Black community, taking questions from  the Interactive One network sites,  TheGrio.com, and   BlackPlanet.com. Make sure to visit the site and watch the discussion here: We Must Pump It Up To Pass Jobs President Obama charged all in attendance to get the truth out about the state of employment and what is happening across the nation. Though it’s difficult to be optimistic about the bleak job market when unemployment is stuck at around 9.1%, but a survey just released by employment services firm ManpowerGroup offers hope for job seekers in many places around the country. The survey reveals that the metropolitan area with the most optimistic forecast of all for hiring this fall is San Antonio, Texas, and there’s also the good news that employers in 45 states expect the bleak employment picture to perk up. In fact, hiring managers in dozens of metropolitan areas anticipate considerable increases in hiring, while others present a darker forecast. In fact, Baltimore-Towson employers are expressing similar sentiments. Twenty percent of that metro area’s hiring managers anticipate a bright fourth quarter. Meanwhile, 7% expect to decrease their payrolls, 71% anticipate no change and 2% are uncertain. This yields a net employment outlook of 13% and positions the Maryland metropolis as the third best place for finding a job this fall. Greensboro-High Point, N.C., St. Louis and Tulsa enjoy the same rank. Part of the fact is that America at large feels  that lawmakers are acting like spoiled brats. Here is a recent poll taken during the debt ceiling discussion: Tell us what you think.  We want to hear from you.
