REVIEW: The Double Chokes on Cold-War Tropes, Gere-Grace Mismatch

The Double shows its cards right away, when the screen fills with a cable news show on which a congressman insists “Russia’s back!,” noting that the country has reignited its nuclear program, its president is openly hostile toward the U.S. and it has more covert agents inside our borders than ever before. Russia’s back, baby!

Video: Sandra Bullock’s Lost 1991 Audition Tape Shows Her Knack for Comedy, High-Waisted Jeans

Now that I’m finally over The Blind Side ‘s undeserved Oscar presence, I can get back to celebrating the things I love about Sandra Bullock. She is feisty! And sincere! And funny! In 1991, she’d apparently already nailed down that Bullockian trifecta, because she is positively charming in this audition tape from the beginning of her career. Check it out after the jump, along with the rest of Buzz Break (including Lindsay Lohan’s newest $1 million offer).

Watch Ryan Gosling Make a Fool of Himself in New Ides of March Clip

Whether he is heroically stopping (and then resolving ) New York City street fights, making spooky dioramas for journalists or dispensing cryptic sex advice to paparazzi , Ryan Gosling can do no wrong. This point has never been more clear than in the latest clip for Ides of March , George Clooney’s fall political thriller, in which the actor flirts with a campaign intern (Evan Rachel Wood) whose name he clearly doesn’t remember.

REVIEW: Deep Cast Can’t Make The Debt Pay Off

No one comes out looking good in The Debt , a grim thriller from director John Madden: Not the Nazi purveyor of concentration camp atrocities, which is a given, but not the trio of young, dedicated Mossad agents sent to bring him to justice after the war either. The film’s a remake of a 2007 Israeli effort that never made it to US theaters, but that presumably carried with it a sense of self-critique, of taking on national mythologizing. Forgoing that focus, The Debt comes across as critical of human nature in general, as a tale of self-interest winning out over the greater good. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, particularly when the character who first offers up this assessment is the aforementioned Nazi monster.

Brad Pitt Thought Angelina Jolie’s First Screenplay Was ‘Not That Bad’

One of the more mysterious curios of the fall movie season is Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey . In an interview with Vanity Fair (on newsstands in New York and Los Angeles this week), Jolie says that she wrote the script for the Bosnian War-set romance while she was ill and quarantined from her children. “I don’t watch TV and I wasn’t reading anything. So I started writing. I went from the beginning to the end. I didn’t know any other way.” Afterward, she passed the draft to Brad Pitt; what did her super-famous husband think? “He called and said, ‘You know, honey, it’s not that bad.'” Oh. Maybe leave that one off the poster. [ VF. com ]
