Carrie Underwood Blows Away Audience at Billboard Music Awards

Blond beauty Carrie Underwood performed the title track to her chart-topping new album, Blown Away, live at last night’s Billboard Music Awards. Showing off her unmistakably powerful pipes (and other attributes), Carrie commanded the stage with what she calls one of the darkest songs she’s ever written. Dark or not, it was a terrific effort, don’t you agree? Carrie Underwood – “Blown Away” (Billboard Music Awards) At the event, Carrie talked to reporters about Robin Gibb , who died earlier in the day, and how she used to listen to the late Bee Gees singer as a kid. “My parents both listened to the Bee Gees quite a bit when I was little, so I was definitely exposed to them at an early age,” she said. “They just had a sound that was all their own, obviously, [it was] never duplicated,” she added. “They were very influential on music in general.” “It’s very sad to hear about any loss. There have been a lot of legends lost this year, so it’s always sad to see it happen, but they are paying a couple of tributes here, and I know that they’ll be classy and respectful and allow us all to remember them.” The most notable: John Legend and Jordin Sparks’ tribute to Whitney .

Chris Brown Performs at Billboard Music Awards; Fans Divided Over Obvious Lip-Syncing

Chris Brown brought his BMX skills to the Billboard Music Awards Sunday. His vocal skills? Mmmnot so much, from the looks of the performance. The singer rode onstage in Las Vegas to perform his high-energy hit “Turn Up the Music” against a colorful, bike ramp backdrop dubbed the “Fun Zone.” Breezy’s leopard fur-lined jacket (open to show off his muscular, tattooed chest, obvi) and impressive dance moves wowed the crowd, but his singing? Chris Brown – “Turn Up The Music” (Billboard Music Awards 2012) Fans on Twitter were disappointed, at least in part, for Chris’ lip-syncing. Some viewers tweeted sentiments like, “What’s the point of performing live if you’re gonna lip sync? You should just become a back up dancer.” “I don’t mind Chris Brown lip synching… at least he PERFORMS !!!” wrote one fan in defense of Chris. “CB performance never disappoints.” The event, which also featured Justin Bieber’s performance and Jordin Sparks’ tribute to Whitney Houston, certainly featured the big names. What do you think of Chris’ performance? Thumbs up or down?

My name is Amber. I’m 21 years old, and I’m a…

My name is Amber. I’m 21 years old, and I’m a Belieber. I FINALLY met Justin on May 3rd, 2012. It was at a MTV event for 18+ (aka “Legal Beliebers”). Now, I need to give a HUGE SHOUT OUT to my girl Shelby (@shelbaybayluvjb) for getting me in! I am forever grateful for her. The event was awesome. MTV was nice enough to give us sandwiches and cookies beforehand. We hung out for a bit then, it was show time. When Justin walked in, I was the first person he hugged. He came right up to me and hugged me. It was amazing! He announced that he would be releasing a song he wrote for his mom around Mothers Day. He was very relaxed and funny. Even carried some conversations with some fans. Afterwards, we asked for pictures and he was happy to meet/take a picture with EVERY belieber there. I believe he was even a bit late to the studio that night for that. But that’s Justin for you. Always giving back to the fans and supporting us like we do him. Thank you, Justin! Can’t wait for the BELIEVE TOUR and more experiences for everyone! -@ AlwaysAmber13 Link: My name is Amber. I’m 21 years old, and I’m a…

Teyana Taylor Is G.O.O.D. Music’s ‘Spoiled Brat’

‘I could get whatever I want,’ 21-year-old Harlem rapper tells MTV News about her new record deal with Kanye West. By Nadeska Alexis Teyana Taylor Photo: MTV News Teyana Taylor collaborated with Kanye West on his 2010 album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , and now, as an official member of the G.O.O.D. Music team, the Harlem rapper confirms that she will also appear on the upcoming G.O.O.D. compilation album. When MTV News caught up with Taylor after news broke that she’d officially been added to the Def Jam roster, she said the deal was finalized in April. “I had been actually working with the whole G.O.O.D. Music family for quite a while,” she explained. “Around the time we did the ‘Dark Fantasy’ song, I was still in my contract with Star Trak/Interscope Records, and I asked for release because I wanted to find myself as an artist. I had options to go to different labels, but I felt like G.O.O.D. Music was where I wanted to be, where I fit in. “This is the second go ’round for me, and hopefully, the second time’s the charm,” the 21-year-old continued. “I signed to Star Trak with Pharrell when I was 15, and now I’m at a new chapter in my life where I’m signed to G.O.O.D. Music, and I’m blessed and happy to be part of the team.” The rapper, singer, writer and actress said the new deal will definitely improve her worth ethic. “Being signed to G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam has opened more doors now that I finally have a team behind me that can push me to work harder,” she said. Taylor has already recorded her tracks for the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music album, another humbling experience. “Recording ‘Dark Fantasy’ and recording the G.O.O.D. Music album was both crazy,” she shared. “When we did ‘Dark Fantasy,’ the album had to be turned in in three hours, so that was a song that we made happen so last minute, which happened to be the first song on the album, so that was very exciting. “The same amount of work, same amount of pressure, same amount of heart, intensity, passion [went into recording the G.O.O.D. Music LP]. It was a great experience to be able to work with someone like Kanye and with Pusha T, Big Sean, Kid Cudi, Common and the whole G.O.O.D. family. When it’s time to do something, we all come together, we make it work, everyone’s focused.” Taylor recorded with West in both Los Angeles and New York, laughing off rumors that the crew ticked off the Royal Family while recording in London . Right now, Taylor is simply enjoying her new family circle. “I am the princess of G.O.O.D. Music, the first lady of G.O.O.D. Music, the baby of G.O.O.D. Music,” she said, laughing. “I’m kinda the spoiled brat right now. I could get whatever I want.” Related Artists Teyana Taylor Kanye West

Usher’s ‘Climax’ Is ‘Not About Sex’

Looking 4 Myself single is about reaching ‘a place where you’re gonna dive in or let it go,’ Usher explains on ‘MTV First.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sway and Usher Photo: Jessica Hyndman / MTV News Usher admits that “over the last three years of my life, it’s no secret I went through some heavy transitions.” And he’s not joking. In 2009, he filed for a divorce from his wife , Tameka Foster, after marrying her in 2007 . In the lead-up to the split, their relationship certainly came with drama, including a rift with his mother and a major health scare for Foster during a 2009 trip to Brazil. And even with his divorce finalized, Usher is still in and out of court dealing with custody issues over their two sons, Usher and Naviyd. However, he is ready to put all that drama aside now that he’s purged those emotions for his June 12 album release, the aptly titled Looking 4 Myself . “There’s an emotional side to it. Over the last three years of my life, it’s no secret I went through some heavy transitions and in that I really came out new,” he told MTV News during “MTV First.” “I came out feeling a sense of entitlement and a sense of ownership of all of that I went through to become better and in being able to survive it. “So I was looking for something in the music,” he continued. “I was looking for something in life. I was looking for something in it has always been right here. It has always been there. So I kind of used the music as a dairy in a way, but a creative, artistic, art-in-motion diary.” But, Usher is no stranger to putting his drama to music. With albums titled Confessions and Raymond v. Raymond, he has always put his personal business right where people can hear it. “Oddly, I’ve unfortunately left my life an open book,” he said. “So every record people would assume that each and every detail is specific, even the videos.” That includes his most recent clip for “Climax,” which follows jilted lover Usher as he contemplates shooting his girl’s other man. Soon, he charges in the house, and a gunshot is fired off. What’s unclear is whether it’s reality or just Usher’s fantasy. “OK, I’m not sitting out in front of somebody’s house and shoot up the crib, just so you know,” he joked. ” ‘Climax’ was an interpretation to really give people a better understanding cause I felt like people really looked at the record for what you heard first, which was ‘Climax’. So, people thought ‘sex.’ It’s not about sex. Well, climax is about sex, but not the song. Just so we’re clear.” The Diplo-produced track actually has more to do with the events of the last few years of his life than events in the bedroom. “The song is really about kind of the crescendo of a relationship, where you’ve reached a place where you’re gonna dive in or let it go,” he said. “And the ‘Climax’ is what it is.” Related Videos MTV First: Usher

Suspiria Remake Finds Lead in Orphan, Hunger Games Star Isabelle Fuhrman

David Gordon Green ‘s remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 horror pic Suspiria was once set to star Natalie Portman , re-envisioning Argento’s stylish tale of a young woman who discovers spooky goings-on at her boarding school. Now Green has found his lead in 15-year-old Isabelle Fuhrman , who herself spooked audiences in her 2009 breakout film The Orphan , and most recently nabbed a role as the sadistic tribute Clove in The Hunger Games . But that’s not all! A report out of Cannes reveals that a line-up of European veterans will be joining Fuhrman — or menacing her — in the pic. Argento’s moody classic told the tale of an American ballet student (Jessica Harper) who begins noticing strange happenings at her European ballet school and discovers that it’s run by a coven of witches; Green’s script removes the ballet aspect, but as he told Movieline last year he plans on paying homage to the original with nods to scenes, shots, dialogue and the film’s iconic score by Goblin. For Fuhrman, this is huge; it marks a coveted lead role and a major step in breaking away from being “that girl from The Orphan ,” a film in which she made quite an impression at the age of 12. (She’s currently filming M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth .) According to Screen Daily , Suspiria has Isabelle Huppert, Albert Nobbs ‘ Janet McTeer, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ‘s Michael Nyqvist and Man of Steel ‘s Antje Traue set to play roles in the film. (You can guess that some or all of these folks might be set to play members of the school/coven, though I imagine Udo Kier’s helpful psychologist from the original might also pop up in some form.) Green is directing from his script with co-writer Chris Gebert, with I Am Love director Luca Guadagnino among the producers; filming begins in September. [ Screen Daily , Variety ]

Cannes Jury Talks ‘Taboo,’ Women Filmmakers and Flirting With Oscar

One of the funniest moments during a “meet the jury session” Wednesday afternoon in Cannes came toward the end of a press conference. The annual first-day Q&A has long been a peculiar dance, with jurors giving vague answers about being happy to be on the jury and how they’ll pursue the next 11 days viewing all of the competition entries with an open mind. And this year was pretty much no exception: Joined by fellow jurors Ewan McGregor, Diane Kruger, Jean Paul Gaultier, Raoul Peck, Andrea Arnold, Hiam Abbass and Emmanuelle Devos, jury president Nanni Moretti — whose own film Habemus Papam ( We Have a Pope ) screened in competition here last year — recalled a wall of silence surrounding the jury when he last served many years back. “When I was here 15 years ago, we weren’t allowed to speak out,” Moretti said, comparing how times have changed for the Cannes Film Festival. “Now we have this press conference and another one after [the winners are chosen].” He likened the former wall of silence to a Vatican conclave, the secret meeting of the Catholic Church’s cardinals who select a pope, a drama that figured so prominently in his film that debuted here one year ago. “Speaking to the press used to be taboo,” he said. “But now only conclaves must be silent.” But the fact of the matter is they do speak, both today and after the awards are announced (but supposedly not in between). This year, the dearth of female directors in the official competition has again caused controversy . Last year, four women directors screened in competition (there were none in 2010 ), but this year’s lineup is again dominated by the males. “I’d absolutely hate if one of my films got selected to be in Cannes only because I’m a woman,” Arnold said when asked about the lack of female representation among the films she’ll judge this year. “I’d only want it selected if it were worthy to be here. But I also think Cannes is a pocket of the world and the fact of the matter is, there are a lack of female directors out there.” Arnold won two jury prizes in Cannes for Red Road (2006) and Fish Tank (2009). Beyond controversy, there is the ever present discussion of the Oscars, something that typically figures in with Toronto in the early fall. But last year, Cannes debuted three Academy Award nominees for Best Picture — Midnight in Paris , The Tree of Life and the eventual Oscar-winner The Artist . Will next year’s Oscar race be influenced again by what happens in Cannes — two events separated by nine months? “I think it’s a completely different ballgame between the Oscars and Cannes,” McGregor noted, perhaps dodging the question a bit. “But this is a great springboard for new filmmakers to be noticed.” “On the one hand it’s ridiculous to say one film is better than another,” said juror Alexander Payne about picking winners, himself an Oscar winner this year for The Descendants . “The selection of the entire slate of films brings more attention than the actual prizes.” Read all of Movieline’s Cannes 2012 coverage here .
