Media Spin Supreme Court Gun Ruling as Loss for States’ Rights

Don’t look now, but it seems the media have suddenly discovered a respect for states’ rights. All it took was a Supreme Court ruling affirming the Second Amendment’s role in protecting gun owners’ rights from state or local infringement. Newsweek  called the ruling  “bad news” for gun controllers because “the right to ‘keep and bear arms’ in the U.S. Constitution’s 2 nd  Amendment restricts state and local power to impose gun controls.” The ruling found that local and state governments cannot simply ban gun ownership. It left the door open for some restrictions, but the extent of those restrictions remains largely untested. CNN  declared the ruling  “a potentially far-reaching case over the ability of state and local governments to enforce limits on weapons.” MSNBC’s Morning Joe contributors were devastated by the court’s ruling. “Gun owners win. Gun rights win. Big cities lose. I mean, any time you make it easier for guns to be on the streets of big cities or any city, actually, we lose as citizens,” Mike Barnacle said. Richard Haass said there was a “gap” between “the theory that the Court is deciding on about a fairly broad interpretation of Second Amendment rights and the realities as mayors see it.” He bemoaned that “this is obviously going to have repercussions in every city and every state across the country.” A  recent MSNBC report , however, found that gun ownership has increased over the years while gun homicides have decreased. Is The Big Bang Theory’s Cast Worth a 285% Raise?

The telegenic nerds of The Big Bang Theory are renewed for their fourth season, but months ahead of their new time-slot debut, the show’s three main stairs want hefty raises : a 285-percent increase from $65,000 to $250,000 an episode. Big Bang Theory ‘s ratings jumped in season three to about 14.2 million viewers each week, nearly double its first season draw. Still, a six-figure raise is the kind of maneuver usually associated with a bona-fide frontliner like Charlie Sheen, not ensembles (unless you count Friends ). Is this trio in the wrong?

Movieline Attempts to Tie Up Almost 100 of Lost’s ‘Loose Ends’

After the Lost finale aired, some people complained that there are still dozens of questions left unanswered — but is that really true? Sure, there are still a few loose threads left hanging, but I’d argue that the bulk of the questions people have are either answerable or can be strongly guessed at based on the information the show has already given us. To put my theory to the test, I decided to rebut a popular video compiled today by College Humor that lists nearly 100 outstanding questions that Lost has left us with. How many could I answer, and how many were legitimate loose ends? Let’s find out.

Bret Easton Ellis on Less Than Zero, Its Adaptation, and Its Sequel Imperial Bedrooms

Bret Easton Ellis has written six books, and all six have been optioned by Hollywood. Of those six, four were made into movies, and they run the gamut from iconic to underseen, acclaimed to lambasted. Each day this week, Ellis will tackle a different adaptation of his books for Movieline, giving his take on what worked, what didn’t, and what went on behind the scenes. As a property, Less Than Zero heralded the arrival of two major talents: Bret Easton Ellis, the young author who had written the novel while in college, and Robert Downey Jr., who co-starred in the 1987 film adaptation as the wily junkie Julian. Still, while the Marek Kanievska-directed movie had style to burn and gorgeous production design (by Barbara Ling) and cinematography (by Ed Lachman), it softened and moralized Ellis’s sex-drugs-and-violence tale by considerable amounts.
