Bad Boy’s MGK And French Montana Headline XXL Freshman Concert

Iggy Azalea, Don Trip and Roscoe Dash take the stage to celebrate hip-hop magazine’s freshman class. By Rob Markman, with additional reporting by Nadeska Alexis Machine Gun Kelly performs at XXL ‘s Freshman show on Monday Photo: Steve Mack/ FilmMagic NEW YORK — On his 1986 classic “Eric B. is President,” the great Rakim famously rapped “MC means move the crowd,” and last night the 2012 XXL Magazine Freshman class did just that — well, the bulk of them anyway. On Monday night, the rap mag, in conjunction with sponsors like Monster Energy Drink and Reebok, held its annual rookie concert, showcasing Machine Gun Kelly , French Montana , Future, Danny Brown , Hopsin, Macklemore, Roscoe Dash, Iggy Azalea, Don Trip and Kid Ink. Things started a bit slow as the crowd filed in to the Best Buy Theater in Times Square. It was approximately 8 p.m. when L.A. MC Kid Ink took the stage to perform joints from his Wheels Up mixtape; Don Trip followed with a poignant performance that included his soul-bearing “Letter to My Son.” It was 9 p.m. when the night’s hosts, Hot 97’s Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg, introduced Iggy Azalea, XXL ‘s first-ever female freshman. She started with “My World” from her Ignorant Art mixtape and ended with her latest single “Murda Bizness” sans her Grand Hustle mentor T.I. “I wish Tip was here,” Iggy told MTV News on Monday just hours before she hit the stage. “It’s so sad that he’s not.” A few other ATL talents were in attendance though. Roscoe Dash ran through a collection of his own hits and high-powered collaborations like Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands” and Big Sean’s “Marvin & Chardonnay.” Then Seattle rapper Macklemore brought a tremendous amount of pageantry to the stage, being the only freshman to rock with a horn player. Hopsin came out to his “Ill Mind of Hopsin 4,” the song where he takes aim at Odd Future. “All these no-flow, gimmicky-ass, fired-up behaviors/ With wack beats and gap teeth like Tyler, the Creator,” he spit as the crowd cheered in approval. Hop continued to thrill the crowd by bringing out Tech N9ne to perform their collaborative single “Am I Psycho.” However, things took a turn when Detroit rapper Danny Brown took the stage with the tongue-in-cheek single, “Radio Song.” The crowd jeered in disapproval, but later turned around when he brought out snubbed- XXL freshman Schoolboy Q. As the night began to wind down, XXL rolled out their heaviest hitters. Atlanta’s Future, with an astronaut mascot in tow, promoted his upcoming April 17 album Pluto by rocking songs like “Tony Montana” and his current single “Same Damn Time.” Hometown hero French Montana was next up. Not only did the Coke Boy perform all of his underground favorites like “Choppa, Choppa Down” and “Everything’s a Go,” French and his team flooded the stage to deliver his biggest hit “Shot Caller.” He then brought out Bad Boy labelmate Red Caf

Nicki Minaj Expects ‘Super Exciting’ ‘Starships’ Remix Video

‘All the fans that were in Times Square tonight will get to be in the video,’ Nicki tells MTV News after surprise NYC performance. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj performs at Times Square Photo: D Dipasupil/ FilmMagic NEW YORK — Not only did New York get a free Nicki Minaj concert Friday night, but the lucky fans in the audience will also be appearing in the video for the DJ Doorly remix of her hit single “Starships.” After the Times Square show , Nicki made her way to the nearby Renaissance Hotel for a meet-and-greet with her fans, then sat with MTV News for a little one-on-one. “All the fans that were in Times Square tonight will get to be in the video, which is gonna be super exciting for them to see themselves,” the hometown star said. “I’m actually really interested in seeing it; I didn’t really know how they were going to make it all happen.” Nokia sponsored the surprise concert and teamed Nicki with DJ Doorly, who came up with his own dance remix for the Barb’s current single from her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. About a thousand or so fans gathered in Times Square several hours before the Young Money rap star took the stage. When she finally did emerge, she delivered a short-but-high-energy set. Nicki set things off with the album version of “Starships” and then performed “Right By My Side” sans Chris Brown. For the finale, Ms. Minaj closed with her 2011 summer hit “Super Bass.” The youthful crowd of locals and out-of-town tourists jumped up and down, rapping along to every word. After Nicki left the stage, the DJ spun the Doorly “Starships” remix and the fans danced, while overhead cameras caught the footage to use in the video, which will hit YouTube on Saturday (April 7). Have you picked up Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded ? Let us know in the comments!

Green Day’s Reign On Shaky Ground In Musical March Madness

Evanescence and Paramore battle it out in the first #1 vs. #2 matchup in MMM history; Elite Eight voting ends tonight at midnight ET! By James Montgomery Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Photo: Getty Images There are still a few hours left before polls close in the Elite Eight of MTV’s Musical March Madness, and it looks like every second — and vote — is going to count. Because, as we predicted on Wednesday , we’ve got more than a few epic encounters on our hands, as the remaining eight bands slug it out for a spot in the Final Four. And, really, with matchups that include Paramore vs. Evanescence, Green Day vs. Adam Lambert and the MMM grudge match to end all MMM grudge matches (that would be Coheed and Cambria vs. Tokio Hotel ), well, we’d expect nothing less. Things have been wild, to say the very least. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! And so, with Elite Eight polls closing tonight at midnight ET, we figured we’d bring you up to date on all the back-and-forth battles. And they’re basically all back-and-forth battles at this point. Shoot, even the My Chemical Romance/Metallica tilt seems destined to come right down to the wire. So here’s where we stand with just a few precious hours left. East We thought the MCR/Metallica matchup had the potential to be a blowout, and for a while, it looked like those predictions would be correct: MMM heavyweights My Chem surged to a huge lead over road-weary Metallica, though, as the hours wore on, Hetfield and company dug deep, and have been staging a furious comeback ever since. As of this afternoon, they still trail MCR by a fairly sizable amount (something like 12,000 votes), but the gap is closing by the minute. Do they have enough left in the tank to overtake My Chem, or will Gerard and the boys make MMM history and advance to their third-straight Final Four? We’ll just have to wait and see. West There’s a huge upset brewing out West, as #11 Adam Lambert has got defending MMM champs Green Day on the ropes. Somewhat surprisingly, this matchup has seen more votes cast than any other in the Elite 8, as the Glambert Nation has shown up in full to support their man. Barring a tremendous rally, it looks like Green Day are going to have to relinquish the trophy, which, given the fact they never bothered to pick it up in the first place, should actually be quite easy. Sort of like Lambert’s dominance up to this point. East The biggest MMM rematch in years — 2010 champs Coheed and Cambria once again facing off against eternal MMM bridesmaids Tokio Hotel, in a battle wrought with historical tension — has, instead, turned into a massacre. Though fans of both bands have been lobbing accusations of cheating (as much a MMM tradition as the trophy itself, it would seem), we’ve been monitoring this one closely … and, Tokio fans, you’re seemingly home free. With hours left, Tokio are pasting Coheed (to the tune of some 440,000 votes) and seem destined to return to the Final Four. Then again, as we’ve learned in the past, you can’t count Coheed’s Children of the Fence out — but sufficed to say, they’ve got their work cut out for them if they want to help their favorite band advance. Just keep it clean, folks. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! South The first #1 vs. #2 matchup in Musical March Madness history has most definitely lived up to the advance billing, as top-seeded Evanescence and #2 Paramore have been slugging it out since polls opened. Early on, this one was as close as double digits though, as it stands now — with nearly 2 million votes cast — it’s Ev who hold the lead ( we see you, Amy Lee! ) Does the Para-clan have one more rally left in them, or will Evanescence run the table and become the first-ever #1 seed to make the Final Four? The hour is growing late, though we suspect this one isn’t over just yet. There are just hours remaining in the Musical March Madness Elite Eight! Can you lift your favorite band to the Final Four? Or, alternately, bring them back from the brink? Get voting, time is running out! MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness tournament reaches the Elite Eight! Voting runs until midnight ET on Thursday, March 29, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it only gets more difficult from here on out. Madonna/deadmau5 Feud: MDNA Producer Weighs In

‘She has this dry sense of humor, which sometimes makes her say or do things that are a little bit shocking,’ Martin Solveig tells MTV News of Madge. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna and deadmau5 Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Earlier this week, Madonna and EDM star deadmau5 were in a war of words after a comment the Queen of Pop made at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival . For those who haven’t been following along at home, when Madonna took the stage to introduce Avicii, she asked the room, “How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” Molly is another term for the illegal drug MDMA (ecstasy). That reference angered ‘mau5, who took to his Facebook to call out Madonna for seemingly linking dance music and drug use, a persistent stereotype. Eventually, the two settled the argument when Madonna took to Twitter , explaining that she was actually referring to the song “Have You Seen Molly” by Cedric Gervais, not the drug. deadmau5 seemed fine with her clarification, and all was cool between the once-beefing twosome. When MTV News caught up with one of Madge’s MDNA producers, fellow EDM DJ Martin Solveig, he weighed in on the short-lived, yet headline-making, tiff. “She’s a lot more ironical than a lot of people think, and … she has this dry sense of humor, which sometimes makes her say or do things that are a little bit shocking, which is also the reason why everyone loves her,” he said of Madge. Solveig also showed support to ‘mau5 (real name Joel Zimmerman). “Joel probably read the whole thing a bit more first-degree and was a little bit angry, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” he continued. “And about him saying the things that he wants to say, I mean, I’m totally with him on that. No one here is promoting drug use, and maybe it was important to say this. I know Madonna enough to know that she is, like, completely at the opposite of supporting drug use, but it’s a little bit of a chitchat.” What did you make of the Madonna/’mau5 feud? Madonna Trashed By Deadmau5 For Glamorization of Ecstasy

Madonna has come under attack from Deadmau5, one of the world’s most famous DJs, for glamorizing ecstasy use, allegedly, during a recent concert. Her Madgesty took the stage at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami this weekend, asking crowd, “How many people in this crowd have seen molly?” “Molly” is a slang term for MDMA, one of the key ingredients in ecstasy, a drug hugely popular within the electronic dance music community. Incidentally (or not) Madonna’s new album, which drops today, is called MDNA . Watch her address the crowd at the 45-second mark below: Madonna at Ultra Music Festival The crowd apparently loved the veiled inquiry from Madonna, but Deadmau5 is not a fan at all, going on Facebook and tearing her a new one. “Very classy there madonna. ‘HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???’ such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra,” he wrote. The Mau5 added, “Quite the f’n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY! f*cking cant smack my head hard enough right now.” Bottom line: Mind-altering drugs are not cool, ravers. So says a man-mau5 whose fan base is probably on them 97 percent of the time.

Courtney Robertson: OWNED on The Bachelor Women Tell All Special

It’s normally a chance for the rejected bachelorettes to confront the man that sent them packing, but it was primarily Courtney Robertson in the hot seat and under fire on The Bachelor: Women Tell All episode Monday night. The women wasted no time in criticizing Robertson, calling her a villain, a phony, a grouch, a two-faced fame-seeker and pretty much an awful human being overall. And that was all before she even took the stage! Then it got worse: Courtney Robertson on The Women Tell All Not only was Courtney slammed – politely but forcefully – by third and fourth place finishers Nicki Sterling and Kacie Boguskie (probably the two nicest people ever), her former rival Emily O’Brien absolutely owned her ass Monday. Crocodile tears or not, Courtney was definitely crying up there. Surprisingly (or not, for a master manipulator), she chose to apologize, saying, “I’m sorry. I take it all back. Looking back, I’m really sorry I hurt all of your feelings.” “You may say it’s not genuine but it is,” she said. Mmm hmm. The Bachelor himself, Ben Flajnik, was only featured at the very end, starting off his not-even-10-minute segment by saying “welcome to my nightmare.” Doesn’t exactly bode well for his chances with Courtney, or Lindzi. Whoever Ben picks on the season finale next week (see our Bachelor spoilers page for more info on that oft-discussed topic), he’s not looking too pleased with life now. You tell us: Courtney Robertson on The Bachelor …

What Is Justin Bieber’s Top Moment?

As Bieber celebrates his 18th birthday, we’re counting down his 18 best moments so far. Check out #1! By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Valery Hache/ AFP/ Getty Images Moment by moment, we have finally arrived to Justin Bieber ‘s top milestone. This week, we kicked off a countdown of his 18 greatest moments , and having already made our way through most of the list , we have reflected on the singer’s incredible rise to fame through vintage videos and reliving some of the classic memories that have made Bieber the star he is today. What else made the list of top Bieber moments? Well, keep reading for the remainder of the list, including our pick for #1. 5. My World Goes on the Road Kicked off in June 2010 in Hartford, Connecticut ,Bieber took the hugely popular tour around the world. With plentiful stops, the spectacle was filled with smooth moves, catchy tunes and tons of love. For his Madison Square Garden show, Bieber brought out famous friends Miley Cyrus and Usher , and he filmed the performance for “Never Say Never.” He wrapped up the tour in October 2011 in Venezuela. 4. 2010 Video Music Awards Bieber went into the 2010 VMAs as one of the biggest pop stars in the world. He took home the Moonman for Best New Artist, got to hang with his pals like Drake , and performed “Baby” and “Somebody to Love” in a manner fit for past teen idols like the Beatles. “Wow,” he said when he took the stage to accept his prize. “This means a lot to me. Thank you to everybody here.” 3. Chopping Off His Hair February 22, 2011 is a day marked in history. It’s when Bieber debuted a shorter hairdo , lopping off his signature floppy style. Since then, Bieber has experimented with his hair, but no style has been quite as headline-making as that initial haircut. “We knew it was going to be a big deal,” his hairstylist Vanessa Price explained to MTV News at the time. “We knew it was going to shock fans, but we also knew it was going to be a change in terms of growing up. I think that’s something that people adjust to.” 2. 2009 VMAs At the 2009 VMAs , Bieber arrived at the show with Diddy, shouted out one lucky fan and instantly went from Internet star to real-world sensation thanks to the high-profile red carpet debut. And, in the end, he ended up being a part of VMA history. Shortly after the Kanye West/VMA outburst, Bieber and Nick star Miranda Cosgrove took the stage to announce Taylor Swift’s performance, moments after the rapper interrupted her, making him one of the folks involved in turning a negative into a positive. 1. His First YouTube Video Five years ago, under the moniker KidRauhl, a very, very, very young (OK, he was 13) Justin posted a YouTube video of himself singing Ne-Yo’s “So Sick.” Displaying his soulful chops and ear for pure pop melodies, it was the video that kicked off a phenomenon. The videos posted after that, where he covered tracks by everyone from Justin Timberlake to Chris Brown, and the frenzy they incited caught the eye of his now manager Scooter Braun, which led to a heated battle between Usher and Justin Timberlake to see who would sign the teen dream. Usher won and the rest is, as they say, history. Share your birthday wishes for Justin and weigh in on the top 18 moments on our Facebook page! Happy 18th birthday, Justin Bieber ! Now that we’ve counted down the superstar’s 18 greatest moments, stick with MTV News as we celebrate the milestone all day. Related Videos Happy Birthday, Justin Bieber!
