At this year’s Urbanworld Film Festival poet, professor and co-founder of the Black Arts Movement Sonia Sanchez screened her documentary Shaking Loose Memories . The film is directed by Jamal Joseph and combines interviews with Sanchez and performances of her poems by Amiri Baraka, T.C Carson and others. Add Tyler Perry to the new Forbes magazine list of the highest-paid men in entertainment. The actor/director/screenwriter/producer/author’s films have raked in more than $500 million worldwide. Perry beat out the man responsible for The Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who earned a reported $113 million over the course of the year, and “X Factor” judge/creator Simon Cowell rounds out the top five with $90 million. Case in point: According to the new Forbes magazine tally, the list of the highest-paid men in entertainment is led by actor/director/screenwriter/producer/author Tyler Perry, whose films have grossed more than $500 million worldwide. He tops a list — measuring the entertainers’ earnings from May 2010 to May 2011 — that also includes Steven Spielberg, Simon Cowell and one of the only actors on the list, Leonardo DiCaprio. The 911 call placed after the shocking August 15 discovery of lifeless Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Russell Armstrong has been released. Be forewarned, it is upsetting. Russell Armstrong’s suicide came weeks before the return of the Bravo show (it’s still set for Sept. 5). Here’s what happened when he was found: Russell Armstrong 911 Call Moments after the body of Armstrong at a friend’s home where he was staying, you can hear the caller say, in no uncertain terms, “My friend just hanged himself, do you understand? Come over here and stop asking questions.” Russell’s estranged wife Taylor Armstrong was also there, with the friend consoling her, saying “Come here Taylor, it’s alright, it’s alright.” The 911 dispatcher asked about the status, at which point Russell’s friend made it clear Armstrong was deceased. “No, there’s nothing you can do,” he said. “There’s nothing we can do. Just please come as soon as possible.” The RHOBH will air a special episode dedicated to the incident.

During his syndicated radio show on our sister station Majic 107.5 / 97.5, Steve Harvey called out Cornel West and Tavis Smiley for their poverty bus tour, while defending President Barack Obama. After a listener sent an email about the duo’s tour being a hustle , Harvey didn’t shy away for offering his own opinion — accusing West and Smiley for using personal vendettas to damage Obama’s name. “I was a huge fan of Cornel West,” he said. “[But] Tavis, I seen him coming a mile away. His anger started when he had a town hall meeting, President Obama couldn’t come because of the campaign trail and he sent Mrs. Obama. He has held that grudge ever since.” Harvey continued his rant by referring to Smiley and West as being affiliated with UTLO.org (which stands out for “Uncle Tom Look Out”). Inside, he reveals the 3 events in his life that profoundly changed him; the first being turning 40, the second being his mother dying, and the third being his appearance on “Oprah” in which he shared details about being sexually abused. He also admits to almost becoming a father. On why he waited until his mother passed to reveal he’d been abused: When my mother took her last breath, I was able to take my first because I would not be a source of pain for her as long as she was alive. I didn’t know how liberating it would be to sit in the pain of the moment, feel it, allow myself to squeeze it as hard as I could, then let it go. On almost becoming a father: Back in December when we thought we were having a kid, I got overwhelmed. We? Is there a woman in your life? Yeah, she is really, really special. It’s the longest relationship I’ve been in, largely because I don’t feel any kind of marry-me-now pressure from her. Tyler Perry makes some good points about the state of the black race in general and in film, but he was wrong when he said he never saw Italians protest HBO’s award-winning mobster drama “The Sopranos.” There were lots of protests from different Italian groups who thought “The Sopranos” upheld Italian stereotypes. Tyler said of Spike Lee: “Instead of taking shots, tearing each other down how about you give me a hand brother and tell me what I need to know and maybe I can share some things with you too.” Mo’Nique invited Spike Lee on her show to end the rivalry between the two filmmakers.
