Filmmaker Creates New Genre Designed to Make You Fall Asleep

Just when you thought every type of film had been done before, filmmaker Sondra Lowell has pioneered an entirely new genre called “Film Sleepy.” As the name suggests, her films are slow and boring by design, and meant to induce audiences to sleep. To Lowell’s credit, she started creating these films in order to play to her strengths after receiving unrelenting criticism from her professors and peers while taking film classes at UCLA. If only more film students would take criticism so constructively. That said, aren’t there enough movies that already unintentionally fall into this genre?

Christina Aguilera And Cam Gigandet Talk Sexy ‘Burlesque’ Wardrobe

While Xtina squeezed into ‘push-up bras, high heels and fishnet stockings,’ Gigandet wore …a cookie box? By Brianne Riviello, with reporting by Kara Warner Cam Gigandet Photo: MTV News Fresh off Christina Aguilera’s saucy song-and-dance number at the American Music Awards on Sunday, many are sweating out the release of her new film, “Burlesque,” which hits theaters Wednesday. “Burlesque” follows a small-town girl (Aguilera) who journeys to the city looking for her big break but instead finds herself in the sensual world of burlesque. Aguilera makes her feature debut alongside the legendary Cher and a beautiful and talented supporting cast that includes Cam Gigandet, Stanley Tucci, Julianne Hough and Eric Dane. We recently caught up with the stars of the film, who giggled as they recalled their unique wardrobe racks for the suggestive-yet-sweet musical. Gigandet joked that, unlike the women in the film who were clad in elaborate bustiers and stockings, his wardrobe included “cookie boxes and pajamas.” (In one very memorable scene, Gigandet parades around with nothing but a Famous Amos box covering his nether regions.) Aguilera lamented that he got off easy: “You didn’t have to do any push-up bras, any high heels, any fishnet stockings.” Aguilera did reveal a few makeup secrets, however, and reported that Gigandet donned eyeliner for his part as Jack, the love interest to Aguilera’s Ali. Gigandet took it all in stride. “It was fun to be something different,” he said. “Yes, it was. I gotta say, it made my job easier to kind of, you know, step into a different character, into a different world.” On a side note, Gigandet also commented on how the legion of fans from his stint in the “Twilight” series has followed him, as compared to other roles — particularly as martial-arts champion Ryan McCarthy in 2008’s “Never Back Down.” “It varies, where I am,” he said, regarding whether he’s still bombarded by Twilighters wherever he goes. “I mean, you know, when I was in New Orleans and Louisiana a few months ago, it was ‘Never Back Down’ that caught everyone’s attention. I know, I love it. But there’s ‘Twilight’ fans all over the world.” Aguilera noted that, once “Burlesque” hits theaters, it will be Gigandet’s character Jack who will get all the buzz from fans. “Of course,” Gigandet laughed. “Then I’ll be ‘Famous Amos cookies’ for the rest of my life.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Burlesque.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . A Royal Wedding Date: Coming Soon!

A few days after their engagement was made official , more details and rumors are coming out regarding the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. For example: Phillipa Lepley is the leading candidate to design Kate’s dress. But the most pressing question of all remains unanswered: When will these two walk down the royal, expensive aisle? No date has been announced, but multiple sources confirm there’s a good chance the nuptials take place in late April. “There is a date they have in mind, and it’s a case of working it out with the relevant parties,” a spokesman said. But why April? A couple of reasons stand out: It would be well ahead of polo season, a sport in which William participates. It would take place after Easter and the preceding period of Lent, which the Queen seriously observes. As for Middleton’s life these days, she continues to meet with senior staffers. They’re helping her settle into the unique, specialized atmosphere or royal life/protocol. Says an insider, making a major understatement: “She will have all sorts of preparations in the run-up to the wedding.”

Joy Behar Trashes Christine O’Donnell: ‘A Witch Who Doesn’t Masturbate’

Comedian Joy Behar seemed to enjoy herself as she muckraked through exotic comments made by Republican Delaware U.S. Senate nominee Christine O’Donnell over a decade ago, refusing to leave them out of a serious discussion about O’Donnell’s candidacy. She even threw Sarah Palin into the mix. O’Donnell, in a 1999 appearance on Bill Maher’s “Politically Incorrect,” said that she “dabbled into witchcraft” in high school but never joined a coven. Behar lambasted O’Donnell, calling her “crazy” and wondering why she was running for office. “I think it shows you how crazy the girl is, doesn’t it?” Behar asked incredulously. “How many crazy people do we have to have in office?” Behar labeled O’Donnell as a “witch who doesn’t masturbate.” Meanwhile, the show’s token conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck countered that if O’Donnell is under the gun for such comments, then President Obama should have been scrutinized more closely over his pastor of 20 years, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Even veteran liberal journalist and ‘View’ co-host Barbara Walters dismissed the notion of serious discussion of O’Donnell’s comments from 10 or 20 years ago, and argued that her current views on social issues should be scrutinized. Yet Behar couldn’t let the “witch” comment go, suddenly taking a conservative stance on Satan worship. “Dabbling is not an acceptable word, when you’re into witchcraft and Satanism,” the liberal show host preached. When Hasselbeck replied to one criticism that O’Donnell is “unique,” Behar quipped “Unique or eunuch?” Walters soon closed the debate, saying that “whether 20 years ago [O’Donnell] did this or she did that – I mean, it makes for juicy headlines, but it really is unimportant.” It still wasn’t enough for Behar, who wanted to throw Sarah Palin in with the dubious comments. “But you know, isn’t it interesting that Sarah Palin backs her up, and one of the reasons she got elected is because Sarah did those robo-calls to make sure that she got elected,” Behar seriously pointed out. “And if I recall, wasn’t Sarah exorcised in Alaska by a preacher one time? She believes in exorcism. These two are into it together. Talk about a coven. This is a coven!” Hasselbeck dismissed the absurdity of Behar’s logic. “Welcome to the politics of someone backing someone else. It’s certainly not a coven. It’s radical to say something like that.” A partial transcript of the segment, which aired on September 20 at 11:06 a.m. EDT, is as follows: BARBARA WALTERS: Republican Delaware Senate nominee Christine O’Donnell – her past came back to haunt her over the weekend, and she defended herself against comments she made back in 1999 on Bill Maher’s old show called “Politically Correct.” (Video Clip) CHRISTINE O’DONNELL: (On “Politically Incorrect”) I dabbled into witchcraft. I never joined a coven. One of my first dates with a witch was on a Satanic altar, and I didn’t know it. O’DONNELL: (Recently) I was in high school. How many of you didn’t hang out with questionable folks in high school? But no, there’s been no witchcraft since. If there was, Karl Rove would be a supporter now. (End Video Clip) (…) SHERRI SHEPHERD: But I think – you know, in this respect, because she says she’s a conservative Christian, and the basis for being a Christian is you might have a former life – you let that go, and you don’t do it anymore. (…) ELISABETH HASSELBECK: Do you think it’s valid to then question this? Do you think this is even a valid thing to look at, that Bill’s throwing out here on his show? JOY BEHAR: I think it shows you how crazy the girl is, doesn’t it? How many crazy people do we have to have in office? HASSELBECK: Well let’s start with this. In fairness, Joy, if we’re going to investigate past religious affiliations or dabbles or high school trips here and there, why then wasn’t Billy-boy over here so interested in where President Obama was for 20 years at Rev. Wright’s church, so much so that – (Crosstalk) SHEPHERD: Nobody let that go with him. HASSELBECK: They absolutely brushed it under the rug. In fairness, in fairness – if they’re going to dig into this, they should then open that up too. BEHAR: Well here’s a girl who says that, you know, she didn’t masturbate – she doesn’t believe in masturbating, either. And she wants to make public policy about other people’s sex lives. She’s a witch who doesn’t masturbate, who has never had premarital sex. Why is she running for office? HASSELBECK: Why do you call her a girl, but anyone who’s powerful a woman? You can’t just toss her off as a girl – BEHAR: You can call me a girl anytime you want, honey. HASSELBECK: No, that’s not right. BEHAR: I love being called a girl. SHEPHERD: But are you saying that anything that anybody does back in high school should be held against them as an adult? What did you do in high school, Joy, that you might not want to talk about? HASSELBECK: What about 20 years in a row? What about 20 years listening to a man who hates this country?  (…) BEHAR: Dabbling is not an acceptable word, when you’re into witchcraft and Satanism. HASSELBECK: She wasn’t into it. She went on a date with a guy who was at an altar. BEHAR: She said she had – she did a Satanic ritual at an altar. HASSELBECK: What about 20 years straight, calling someone your mentor, who then goes on to produce hatemongering across the country. 20 years, he’s – (…) WALTERS: When you discuss past positions – and she’s a very conservative candidate, she’s a Tea Party candidate –  the fact that she’s now a candidate – were something that’s surprising. Okay, so we’re giving special attention. She has other views, I think, that she’s – SHEPHERD: Against masturbation – HASSELBECK: She’s unique. WALTERS: She doesn’t think that – BEHAR: Unique, or eunuch? WALTERS: Let me finish, okay? She doesn’t think that using condoms – that using condoms could combat AIDS. She has other points of view, and a conservative point of view – I think those are the things, if you want to discuss them, you discuss them. This has to be thought of in future voting and whatever her philosophy is. (Crosstalk) But whether 20 years ago she did this or she did that – I mean, it makes for juicy headlines, but it really is unimportant. BEHAR: But you know, isn’t it interesting that Sarah Palin backs her up, and one of the reasons she got elected is because Sarah did those robo-calls to make sure that she got elected. And if I recall, wasn’t Sarah exorcised in Alaska by a preacher one time. She believes in exorcism. These two are into it together. HASSELBECK: Does she currently believe in exorcism? BEHAR: Talk about a coven. This is a coven! HASSELBECK: You know what, though? Joy, welcome to the politics of someone backing someone else. It’s certainly not a coven. It’s radical to say something like that.

Director Mark Romanek Wants To Direct Lady Gaga Video

‘Never Let Me Go’ director would return to directing videos if Gaga, Radiohead or Tom Waits call. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Lady Gaga Photo: WireImage Since MTV’s Video Music Awards launched in 1984, a select few artists and directors have been honored with the Video Vanguard statuette in recognition of their unique contributions to the ever-changing art form. Mark Romanek is one of them. The director vaulted from working with the likes of Michael Jackson, Madonna and David Bowie to directing Robin Williams in 2002’s “One Hour Photo.” By now, though, Romanek dubs himself “semi-retired” when it comes to directing music videos. That’s not hard to understand, considering how well things have gone for him in Hollywood. His latest feature, “Never Let Me Go,” stars Oscar nominees Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan. Yet there are a few artists for whom Romanek would happily un-retire. “If Radiohead called or Tom Waits called, I’d go running,” he told MTV News while promoting his new film at the Toronto Film Festival. “Or Gaga, actually.” “Lady Gaga is still doing stuff in the old-school, ’90s way,” he explained. “The ‘Alejandro’ video was really impressive.” That would be Gaga’s homage to Weimar-era Germany , all angular outfits and black-and-white moodiness. “[It is] about a woman’s desire to resurrect a dead love and who cannot face the brutality of her present situation,” the video’s director, Steven Klein , told MTV News in June. “The pain of living without your true love.” Gaga wouldn’t be the first fierce female artist to collaborate with Romanek. He worked alongside Madonna for “Bedtime Stories” and Janet Jackson — and the King of Pop himself — for the seminal “Scream” video in 1995. And though Romanek hasn’t directed a video since Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound” in 2005, he’s certainly open to returning to that world for the “‘Alejandro” singer. “She’s adventurous and visually stunning and takes chances,” he said. “Call me up!” Check out everything we’ve got on “Never Let Me Go.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Linkin Park Get Cosmic For VMA Performance

Rockers put on epic performance of ‘The Catalyst’ at Griffith Park Observatory. By Gil Kaufman Linkin Park performs during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: MTV News If the theme of Eminem’s smash VMA performance was “triumph,” Linkin Park were also shooting for the stars during their live slot, delivering on a promise of an “epic” event Making the televised debut of massive debut single “The Catalyst,” from their upcoming Rick Rubin-produced album A Thousand Suns, the veteran rap/rock band set up shop at Los Angeles’ legendary Griffith Park Observatory , site of iconic movie moments from “Rebel Without a Cause” to “The Terminator” and “Transformers.” With the sky-gazing landmark blazing in candy-colored lights, a crowd of fans dashed to a stage set up in front of the building as Mike Shinoda growled out the lyrics about living under a loaded gun while shrouded in green fog. Shinoda promised beforehand that the backdrop would match some of the themes and lyrics in the song, and he wasn’t kidding. As singer Chester Bennington howled out the lines “And when I close my eyes tonight/ To symphonies of blinding light … transmissions echoing away/ Far from the world of you and I/ Where oceans bleed into the sky,” the set exploded in strobes and flashing white searchlights synced to the song’s relentless techno-metal rhythm. The Hollywood Hills framing them in the background, the band made the most of their unique setting, amping up the push-and-pull dynamics of the song’s wide-open chorus, with Bennington and Shinoda shadowing each other’s vocals with a sandpaper-and-silk harmony. By song’s end, Bennington seemed spent, kneeling in exhaustion center stage as the intimate crowd howled its approval. What did you think of Linkin Park’s performance? Let us know in comments below.
