American Idol Music Director Honoring Motown At Carnegie Hall

Continued here:

One American “idol” may have just made history at Carnegie Hall, but plenty more are about to celebrate history at the world famous venue. Just days after Jay-Z performed on back-to-back nights for charity, “American Idol” Music Director Ray Chew will be holding “A Tribute To The Music of Motown” tonight, February 9th, 2012 at the concert hall. 25 Artists That Need To Be Heard: CJ Hilton The event is being sponsored by United Airlines and hosted by CNN journalist, Soledad O’Brien with a guest list that includes the legendary Dionne Warwick, Paul Shaffer, Boys II Men, BeBe Winans and Motown’s own, Martha Reeves. “This is a tribute to the great iconic music of Motown felt and known the world over, crossed cultural lines and spans generations,” Mr. Chew told TheUrbandaily.com. “It’s very befitting that we bring this music that is part of the American fabric to an iconic venue like Carnegie Hall.” Chew explained that after holding a tribute to Motown on “American Idol” the reality set in that many of the legends of Black music are passing away. And after speaking with Motown founder Berry Gordy that night, Chew felt it was time to “give them their roses while they can smell them” so to speak, and what better time than Black History Month? “A lot of the young artists that I encounter, Motown is in your blood stream whether you realize it or not,” said Chew. “When you rattle of the names of the artists and the songs everyone realizes how much this is part of the experience. Stevie Wonder alone…everyone has performed a Stevie Wonder song at some point. Artists are standing on the shoulders of these giants.” The night will also include tributes to the late Nick Ashford , who Chew says was, “very close to me” and the recently departed Don Cornelius . “His contribution to not only Black music and R&B and the support he gave the Motown artists can not be overstated,” Chew said of the Soul Train founder. “So he will be part of our tribute.” Details are below: CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE TICKETS RELATED POSTS: WBW Honors: The Tuskegee Airmen [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO] Way Black When Honors: Leon Huff On Making The “Soul Train” Theme Song Way Black When Honors: Lenny Williams

Army Sergeant Responds to Soulja Boy Diss With Own Rap Song

Soulja Boy’s anti-military rap is, not surprisingly, drawing fire from the U.S. Armed Forces. What is somewhat surprising is to see a retired Army sergeant leading the charge with a response to the controversial song in rap form! Leo Dunson, a five-year combat veteran, recorded the trac, “Change Your Name” after hearing Soulja Boy’s “Let’s Be Real.” Basically, Dunson – who raps under the name Sgt. Dunson – comes at Soulja early and often (NSFW lyrics): Sgt. Dunson – Change Your Name Dunson says Soulja Boy’s song is, “The most ignorant thing I’ve heard in so long” and is especially offensive with the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 looming. He says a petition to get Soulja Boy’s music banned from all U.S. military bases is getting support from civilians and all branches of the armed forces. Soulja Boy is, of course, legally free to rap about whatever the heck he wants, but Sgt. Dunson and U.S. troops are certainly free to not like it and hit back.

Michael Colyar to Sue United Airlines Over Discrimination

Nope, we cannot all just get along. Michael Colyar, a veteran actor best known for his role in Barbershop , was kicked off a United Airlines flight last week and proceeded to go on a rant against the alleged racist basis for such an action. Now, he plans to sue. TMZ reports that Colyar has hire Milton Grime, the lawyer who won $3.8 million for Rodney King after police were caught on tape in 1991 viciously beating that civilian down. While passengers on Colyar’s flight say the actor was loud and obnoxious, he believes flight attendants only gave him the boot because he’s African-American and, we assume, he’s seeking a large cash settlement as a result. Two Men Arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol International Airport | May Have Been on a Test Run with Electronic Devices Attached to Bottles | Video | Photos

Source: 2 arrested at airport may have been on test run http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/08/30/netherlands.airport.arrests/index.htm… Dutch arrests may have been dry run, U.S. source says By the CNN Wire Staff August 30, 2010 10:20 p.m. EDT The arrestees had flown from the U.S. to the Netherlands, but luggage from one was on a different plane, an official said. STORY HIGHLIGHTS * NEW: Men in custody may have been testing security * NEW: The items included bottles with phones or watches attached * Arrests follow Chicago-to-Amsterdam flight * Dutch investigators keep lid on details (CNN) — Two men held in the Netherlands may have been trying to test U.S. airport security by putting bottles with electronic devices attached in checked baggage, a U.S. law enforcement source said Monday. The men were taken into custody after landing in Amsterdam on a flight from Chicago, Illinois, Dutch prosecutors said. Both men were being held at Amsterdam's Schiphol International Airport at the request of Dutch national police, airport spokesman Robert Kapel said. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said they were arrested after “suspicious items” in their luggage raised concern. “The items were not deemed to be dangerous in and of themselves, and as we share information with our international partners, Dutch authorities were notified of the suspicious items,” the U.S. agency said. “This matter continues to be under investigation.” Those items were an empty shampoo bottle with watches attached to it and an empty bottle of a stomach medicine with mobile phones attached, according to the U.S. law enforcement source, who has been briefed on the investigation. That has raised concern that the men may have been testing a future terrorist plot, the source said. Attempts to sneak liquid explosives aboard jetliners were at the heart of a 2006 plot broken up by British authorities. That case led U.S. authorities to ban all but small quantities of liquids from aircraft cabins. U.S. law enforcement officials told CNN that the checked bags contained knives and box cutters as well. Passengers have been banned from carrying those items on aircraft since the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington. The source identified the men aboard United Airlines Flight 908, from Chicago, Illinois, to Amsterdam, as Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al-Soofi and Hezem al-Murisi. Al-Soofi began his trip by boarding a flight in Birmingham, Alabama, and al-Murisi originally flew from Memphis, Tennessee, the law enforcement source said. Another U.S. law enforcement official said both men were in the United States legally, but their countries of origin were not immediately known. That official said neither of the passengers were carrying items that are barred from aircraft, and federal air marshals were aboard the Chicago-to-Amsterdam flight. However, the law enforcement source said al-Soofi was ticketed for a flight that went to Washington's Dulles International Airport, with continuing stops in Dubai and Yemen, while both he and al-Murisi were aboard the Chicago-to-Amsterdam flight. Al-Soofi's luggage went aboard the Chicago-to-Washington flight without him, the source said, in what amounted to another violation of U.S. safety protocols. A U.S. government official said items in at least one of the bags were being examined by law enforcement authorities at Dulles on Monday night. The official said al-Soofi and al-Murisi were seated near each other on the Chicago-to-Amsterdam flight, but were not seated next to each other. Authorities are still looking into whether the men were traveling together or simply had similar itineraries, the official said. CNN's Nic Robertson, Jeanne Meserve, Mike Ahlers and Susan Candiotti contributed to this report. added by: EthicalVegan

Back To Rehab

It looks like it’s back to rehab for Jonathan Rhys Meyers . Just days after allegations of a drunken tirade at New York’s JFK Airport, a spokesman for the Tudors star confirms that Mr. Rhys Meyers will in fact be checking into a rehab facility for his alcohol addiction. Newspaper reports over the weekend claimed the actor was wolfing down vodkas at 7am in the airports VIP lounge just before his flight to Los Angeles and when United Airlines staff deemed him too drunk to get on the plane…the fighting Irish took over. The ‘Bend it like Beckham’ star allegedly exploded…cursing and screaming at the staff…and as a result was not only banned from boarding the plane…but any future United Airlines flights as well. This marks Jonathan’s third alcohol-related airport arrest -his third trip to rehab- and the final straw for his girlfriend Reena Hammer. Word is she threatened to end their relationship if he didn’t get help. Let’s hope the third time’s the charm.

U.S. and Russia Sign Nuclear Arms Pact

PRAGUE — With flourish and fanfare, President Obama and President Dmitri A. Medvedev of Russia signed a nuclear arms control treaty on Thursday and opened what they hoped would be a new era in the tumultuous relationship between two former cold war adversaries. Meeting here in the heart of a once-divided Europe, the two leaders put aside the acrimony that has characterized Russian-American ties in recent years as they agreed to bring down their arsenals and restore an inspection regime that expired in December. Along the way, they sidestepped unresolved disputes over missile defense and other issues. “When the United States and Russia are not able to work together on big issues, it is not good for either of our nations, nor is it good for the world,” Mr. Obama said as his words echoed through a majestic, gilded hall in the famed Prague Castle. “Together, we have stopped the drift, and proven the benefits of cooperation. Today is an important milestone for nuclear security and nonproliferation, and for U.S.-Russia relations.” Mr. Medvedev called the treaty signing “a truly historic event” that will “open a new page” in Russian-American relations. “What matters most is this is a win-win situation,” he said. “No one stands to lose from this agreement. I believe this is a typical feature of our cooperation. Both parties have won.” The Russian president signaled general support for the American-led drive to impose new sanctions on Iran, saying that Tehran’s nuclear program has flouted the international community. “We cannot turn a blind eye to this,” Mr. Medvedev said, while adding that sanctions “should be smart” and avoid hardship for the Iranian people. The apparently warm relationship between the two presidents was on display as they entered the hall to trumpet music. They whispered and smiled with each other in English as they sat side by side signing copies of the so-called New Start treaty, then traded compliments during a follow-up exchange with reporters. Mr. Obama called the Russian a “friend and partner” and said “without his personal efforts and strong leadership, we would not be here today.” For his part, Mr. Medvedev said the two had developed a “very good personal relationship and a very good personal chemistry as they say.” While the treaty will mandate only modest reductions in the actual arsenals maintained by the two countries, it caps a turnaround in relations with Moscow that sunk to rock bottom in August 2008 during the war between Russia and its tiny southern neighbor, Georgia. When he arrived in office, Mr. Obama made restoring the relationship a priority, a goal that coincided with his vision expressed here a year ago of eventually ridding the world of nuclear weapons. Even as the two presidents hailed the treaty, however, they found no common ground on American plans to build an anti-missile shield in Europe to counter any Iranian threat. Mr. Obama refused Russian demands to include limits on missile defense in the treaty, nearly scuttling the agreement. In the days leading up to the ceremony here, Russian officials alternately claimed the agreement would bind the program or complained that it did not and threatened to withdraw if it went forward. The treaty, if ratified by lawmakers in both countries, would require each country to deploy no more than 1,550 strategic warheads, down from 2,200 allowed in the Treaty of Moscow signed by President George W. Bush in 2002. Each would be limited to 800 total land-, air- and sea-based launchers — 700 of which can be deployed at any given time — down from 1,600 permitted under the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty of 1991, or Start. Because of counting rules and unilateral reductions over the years, neither country would have to actually eliminate large numbers of weapons to meet the new limits. Moreover, the treaty does not apply to whole categories of weapons, including thousands of strategic warheads held in reserve and tactical warheads, some of which are still stationed in Europe. But the treaty would re-establish an inspection regime that lapsed along with Start last December and bring the two countries back into a legal framework after years of tension. Moreover, both sides hope to use it as a foundation for a new round of negotiations that could lead to much deeper reductions that will cover weapons like stored or tactical warheads. The first task for Mr. Obama after returning to Washington will be persuading the Senate to ratify the new treaty and advisers planned to head to Capitol Hill on Thursday, even before his return, to brief senators. Ratification requires a two-thirds vote, or 67 senators, meaning the president needs at least eight Republicans. The White House is counting on the support of Senator Richard G. Lugar of Indiana, the senior Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee and one of his party’s most respected voices on international affairs, to clear the way.
