Ryan Gosling Calls ‘Blue Valentine’ A ‘Companion Piece’ To ‘The Notebook’

Actor says his new film is about ‘the nitty gritty of trying to stay in love.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ryan Gosling Photo: MTV News Ryan Gosling is set to appear on the big screen this month in a new film about love. Of course, while he might forever be remembered as the lovelorn Noah in “The Notebook,” he’s certainly weaving a different story about relationships in the darker “Blue Valentine.” So, does Gosling think fans of the sweeping Nicholas Sparks love story will find anything to relate to in this gritty, sexy new flick? “I think that ‘Blue Valentine’ is a nice companion piece to ‘The Notebook,’ because I feel like both are true,” he told MTV News. “That they’re both possible, and the truth is somewhere in the middle. But I feel like ‘Blue Valentine’ kind of picks up where ‘The Notebook’ leaves off.” While “The Notebook” deals with the courtship of two people who are head-over-heels for each other, “Blue Valentine” looks deeper at what happens after two people think they’ve gotten their happy ending. “There’s a huge period of time which isn’t in [‘The Notebook’]: The practical, day-to-day living with one another isn’t dealt with in that film,” he explained. “I would meet people when I did ‘The Notebook’ who would come up to me on the street and say, ‘That happened to me; that’s my parents story,’ because these people are saying that’s not realistic love, doesn’t really happen for people like that. “That’s not true, because I’ve met so many people that told me that that’s their story or their parents’ story,” he continued. “But I’ve also talked to a lot of people now that feel like this film is more about what it’s like the day to day, the nitty gritty of trying to stay in love.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Kanye West’s ‘Runaway’ Is MTV News’ #2 Song Of 2010

From its debut at the VMAs to its accompanying short film, everything about this Top 25 Song made our jaws drop. By Kyle Anderson Kanye West Photo: Getty Images For a song that landed at #2 on MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 , Kanye West’s “Runaway” starts awfully humbly. It will be best remembered for the epic short film that accompanied it or the jaw-dropping debut it made at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. (Or perhaps it will be noted for its four-minute Auto-Tune freestyle that caps off the album version.) But for all that sweep and bluster, “Runaway” kicks off with a single tap of a piano key, kicking off one of the most epic, jaw-dropping, honest and thrilling pieces of music to hit the popular airwaves all year. Those single notes slowly start to string together and give way to the drums, which are all low rumbles and twitches. A vocal sample stabs its way in, shouting “Look atcha!” And then Kanye starts to croon his series of heart-on-his-sleeve mea culpas. All that goes down in the first 30 seconds, and it only gets better from there. “Runaway” was produced by West, Emile, Jeff Bhasker and Mike Dean. The track made its debut at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, which saw West (wearing a flashy red suit) standing over a sampler and playing around, as though the audience just interrupted him in his studio. A series of ballet dancers (and Clipse member Pusha T) may have joined him onstage, but that performance was all about West’s massive personality and the scope of the song. The first verse of “Runaway” is pretty staggeringly naked, even for a lyricist as honest and direct as West. “She found pictures in my e-mail/ I sent this girl a picture of my di–,” he raps in the opening line. “I don’t know what it is with females/ I ain’t never been too good at that sh–.” But rather than sound authoritative and boastful (like he does on “Power” ), West sounds resigned to the idea that he’ll probably never figure women out. It’s a double-edged sword, because while he’s letting women off the hook because he recognizes that he’s no good, he also gives “a toast to the jerk-offs” in the chorus. In fact, the sexual politics of “Runaway” only intensify as the song rolls on. When Pusha T shows up for what has to be one of the best guest verses of the year, he lays out the compromise that has to occur whenever you get involved with a guy like West (who may have “a good girl” but is still interested in “them hood rats”). “You can leave or live with it,” Pusha T raps. “Every bag, every blouse, every bracelet/ Comes with a price tag/ Baby, face it.” The good life is waiting when you take West’s hand, but keep in mind that his yang has a yin as well. The internal narrative of “Runaway” isn’t particularly complex, but the same can’t be said of the short film that West made to accompany the track. “Runaway,” which premiered on MTV back in October, tells the story of a phoenix (as in the mythical beast) who falls to Earth and falls in love with West but eventually must destroy herself because the pressure becomes too great. It’s a complicated and visually stunning piece of art that will go down in history as one of the most ambitious clips in the history of music videos. Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is one of the most challenging and satisfying albums of this young century, and “Runaway” is the centerpiece of that album. It’s gorgeous and powerful, representing both a distillation of West’s psyche and an external exploration of the year he put behind him. It only got a vague whiff of the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (“Runaway” peaked at #12), but there was scarcely a song more thrilling and important released in all of 2010. How does Kanye West’s “Runaway” rank among the year’s best songs? Let us know in the comments! MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 countdown continues. ‘Glee’ Tackles Britney Spears’ Snake-Charming VMA Set

Heather Morris rocks a boa and bikini similar to Spears’ 2001 Video Music Awards performance. By Mawuse Ziegbe Heather Morris on “Glee” Photo: Adam Rose/ Fox Hold tight, Gleeks! The all-Britney Spears episode of “Glee” is just days away, and details about the pop star’s tribute are trickling in. We already know the McKinley high-schoolers are going to revamp Brit’s debut smash ” … Baby One More Time” and her Madonna match-up “Me Against the Music.” The song-and-dance crew has also reached beyond Spears’ trendsetting clips to one of her iconic stage performances: the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards rendition of “I’m a Slave 4 U.” A picture surfaced Friday (September 24) of the megastar’s “Glee” namesake Brittany (played by Heather Morris) rocking a bejeweled green-and-blue two-piece similar to Spears’ skimpy VMA ensemble, with a yellow boa draped over her shoulders. Morris recently opened up about the arc of Tuesday’s episode, dishing that the glee clubbers rebel against Schuester’s ban on retooling Spears’ hits. “Through a special substance, I go under and have a couple of dream sequences — not only myself, but with Santana [Naya Rivera],” Morris told Australian magazine TV Week. “A lot of it has to do with Will [Matthew Morrison] not allowing us to perform Britney Spears songs, because he doesn’t agree with what kind of entertainer she is, so it’s our fight to do Britney. But it’s not just us doing Britney in show choir; there are other sequences — it’s our homage to her.” Tuesday’s show is shaping up to be a busy one for Morris, who is also vamping it up opposite Spears herself in their reworking of “Music.” However, the actress insisted her previous encounters with Spears helped her stay cool around the pop icon. “It wasn’t really nerve-racking, because I’ve met her before and I wasn’t really overwhelmed by who she is,” she said. “But the idea of what she has given us for the show and, for me, getting to dance with her and play with her on set, I was just staring at her at one point and thinking, ‘This is just so frickin’ awesome.’ ” Are you excited for the Britney takeover on “Glee” next week? Ke$ha Talks VMA Garbage Bag Ensemble, Lady Gaga’s Meat Suit

‘It was amazing. I got to wear a garbage bag on national TV,’ singer says. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Kara Warner Ke$ha Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic Even if they didn’t walk away with Moonmen, just about everybody who attended the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards exited the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles a winner. Taylor Swift started some buzz with new music, Lady Gaga blew away the fashion community once again and Paramore’s Hayley Williams finally got to do a live tag-team with B.o.B. Another winner in spirit? Ke$ha, whose first visit to the VMAs was a positive one. “It was amazing. I got to wear a garbage bag on national TV,” Ke$ha gushed on the red carpet at the premiere of the second season for the HBO show “Eastbound and Down.” “It was fun. It was good. And I got nominated for four, and it was a dream come true just to be there.” The 23-year-old singer, who did indeed wear a dress made from garbage bags, was impressed with the level of fashion experimentation at this year’s show. “It was fun. I think everybody was having fun with it,” she said. However, she is not entirely sure she would be able to take the steps that Lady Gaga did with her head-turning meat-based ensemble. “I don’t know if I could actually put raw meat on me,” she admitted. With the VMAs behind her, Ke$ha is working on a new album, but was mostly excited to get out and support her favorite show on television. “I don’t watch TV, but this show I connect with on a really deep level,” she said. “I kind of feel like I’m the female version of Danny McBride: Kind of white trash, just ready to party.” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Tim Kash Will.I.Am on the set of “Sesame Street” Photo: MTV News Will.i.am made quite an impression on the music world when he performed with Nicki Minaj during the pre-show of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, and he’s about to make waves among an entirely different audience soon. His new song “What I Am,” which he performed for “Sesame Street,” just premiered online , and the track will also be featured on the show’s season premiere on September 27. Flanked by an army of “Sesame Street” all-stars (including Big Bird, Elmo, Grover and Cookie Monster), Will croons an inspiration track about being yourself, setting goals and working hard to achieve those goals. The video segment was recorded back in November, and MTV News was there to catch up with Will (and Grover). “The song is called ‘What I Am,’ and it’s about making goals and working hard to achieve them,” Will told MTV News. He was especially honored to be on the set of “Sesame Street” and working with some of the Muppets who gave him his early education. “You have to understand: I was like 4 or 5 years old, and I always wanted to watch ‘Sesame Street,’ ” he said. “Grover helped me learn about numbers and about the alphabet, and I used to know all the songs.” He had a fan in Grover, who insisted he liked the Black Eyed Peas, as well as “carrots, broccoli, all those vegetables.” Grover later taught will a few dance moves while the producer provided beatbox backup. Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress: Celebs Weigh In

‘She’s a courageous chick,’ Mary J. Blige said at New York fashion event. By Amy Wilkinson Lady Gaga on stage at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Tongues are still wagging over Lady Gaga’s BBQ-defying meat dress from Sunday’s Video Music Awards , and it seems everyone has an opinion on the flesh frock. So who better to weigh in on Lady Gaga’s look than the honorees at US Weekly ‘s 25 Most Stylish New Yorkers event in New York City? While many stars lauded the “Bad Romance” singer for her sartorial bravery, most added that they’d never actually don such a rare outfit. “I thought: courageous,” host Mary J. Blige said with a laugh when asked her opinion of Lady Gaga’s meat dress. “She’s a courageous chick.” Actress and frequent “Glee” guest star Kristin Chenoweth couldn’t have agreed more. “I thought it was incredible,” she said. “Actually it was an incredible design. I wouldn’t be caught dead in it, but go girl!” One lucky celeb got to see — and smell — Franc Fernandez’s design up close and personal. “I was sitting right behind her [at the VMAs],” record producer Sean Garrett said. “That’s probably the best-smelling meat [I’ve ever smelled].” One person not coveting Garrett’s prime seat was talk-show host Wendy Williams. “I wouldn’t have been the one wanting to sit next to her,” she said. “With the hot lights and the hot skin, she was actually sizzling right there, and I understand she has a line of perfume coming out, and that would smell like A1 Sauce.” Though most celebrities found Gaga’s get-up humorous, “The City” star and People’s Revolution owner Kelly Cutrone was introspective, saying she found the frock frivolous in light of global hunger issues. “I personally think it’s not a good idea when people are starving in the world,” she said about food as fashion. “One person’s dress is another person’s dinner.” What do you think about Lady Gaga’s meat dress?
