Brad Pitt Says Violence In ‘Killing Them Softly’ Is ‘Important’

Actor also tells reporters at Cannes Film Festival that he and Angelina Jolie have yet to set a wedding date. By Kara Warner Brad Pitt at the premiere of “Killing Them Softly” at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival Photo: Anne-Christine Poujoulat/ Getty Images When it comes to the comings and goings of Brad Pitt, nearly everything the A-list actor says or does makes international news. That’s why, when Pitt participated in a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday (May 22), he found himself faced with several questions not entirely related to his upcoming flick “Killing Them Softly.” And according New York magazine’s Vulture , Pitt was more than happy to answer all of them. He was asked about the heavy violence in “Killing Them Softly” and whether, as a dad, he had any reservations about playing a killer. In the gritty crime drama, he portrays a hitman who is hired by a crime boss (Ray Liotta) to find and kill a pair of overzealous upstarts who attempt to stake their claim by robbing a high-profile card game staged by Liotta’s character. But according to Pitt, the role didn’t disturb him at all. “Not in any way, because murder is an accepted possibility when you’re dealing in crime,” he told reporters. “I would have a much harder time playing a racist or something along those lines. That would be much more unsettling for me than a guy who shoots another guy in the face.” Pitt went on to say that the violence in the film is realistic in that it’s not glorified for the sake of entertainment. “We live in such a violent world. I certainly grew up hunting, which is a very violent act,” he said when asked if the film was in any way influenced by the popularity of graphic video games that involve gangsters and hired killers. “Have you ever had a hamburger? Have you seen how they butcher cows? It’s barbaric, it’s horrendous, it’s very violent. This is the world we live in, so I see it as absolutely important to film.” The Oscar-nominated actor even happily answered a quandary about whether or not his upcoming marriage to longtime love Angelina Jolie would affect his work schedule. “We have no date. We actually really, truly have no date,” he said. “It’s something that makes sense to us … and we’re still hoping we figure out marriage equality in the States before then, before that date.”

Prometheus Rated R, According to… Movie Ticket?

Speculation has swirled for a while now about whether or not Fox and Ridley Scott would pursue a PG-13 rating for its blockbuster hopeful Prometheus , which, if previews and disgusting animated GIFs are any indication, has plenty of raw sci-fi terrors to back up an R. But one fan who locked up an advance ticket to the film might have unintentionally solved the ratings puzzle. Collider passes along the accompanying photo, which an IMDB user apparently nabbed in advance over the weekend and passed along with the giddy declaration: “AS PROMISED!! CHECK THE LINK ABOVE, PROMETHEUS IS RATED R!!!!” ZOMG, etc. Sorry, kids! May I suggest Bully ? [ IMDB via Collider ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

PTC Calls for America’s Got Talent Boycott Over "Vulgar" Howard Stern

The Parents Television Council is at it once again. This time, the focus of the organization’s wrath is NBC and its decision to hire Howard Stern as a judge on the upcoming season of America’s Got Talent . In a follow-up to its original statement, slamming the show’s decision to hire this controversial radio host, the PTC has now called for a boycott from all advertisers, sending a letter to 91 companies and urging them to consider their “media buy” in light of this “vulgar” new panelist. America’s Got Talent Preview: Welcome, Howard Stern Stern is only an expert when it comes to “looking at insecure, naked young women and telling them whether or not they were hot enough to pose for Playboy,” the letter, obtained by TMZ, reads. Does his decades-lone penchant for profanity, his affinity for degrading and sexualizing women, and his proclivity for vulgar and explicit dialog, accurately reflect your corporate values? the PTC asks advertisers in the letter. Seems a bit harsh to us. It’s not like the guy ever tried to have phone sex with Octomom . Oh… right. What do you think? Should Howard Stern be a judge on America’s Got Talent?

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels to Shoot Dumb & Dumber 2 This Fall?

Honestly, I can’t tell which way is up with some of the news coming out of the April Fool’s Day weekend. Does James Cameron want in on a Prometheus sequel? Is the Queen collaborating with 007 for the Olympics? Surely Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels aren’t seriously going to shoot the long-gestating sequel to 1994’s Dumb & Dumber this fall once the Farrelly brothers are done promoting April 13’s The Three Stooges , right ? Well, the first was an April Fool’s joke, and the jury’s still out on whether or not The Sun pranked the blogosphere with their James Bond exclusive. But Coming Soon’s Silas Lesnick pinky-swears that the Dumb & Dumber sequel story is true, straight from the Farrelly’s mouths this weekend at the Three Stooges junket. “We’re getting set to shoot Dumb and Dumber 2 in September,” said Peter Farrelly. “It’s the first sequel we’ve ever done and we’ve got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back.” According to Farrelly, he, brother Bobby, and star Daniels were already gung-ho about picking up again with Lloyd and Harry. (Farrelly also seems to discount the studio-made prequel Dumb & Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd , as we all should.) Once Carrey was onboard, the project started moving. “He had just watched Dumb and Dumber ,” explained Farrelly, “and he said, ‘This is the perfect sequel. Let’s do it.'” [ Coming Soon ]

Bomb Squad Called to Rush Limbaugh’s House After Suspicious Package Arrives

The Palm Beach County Sherriff’s Office bomb squad was dispatched to Rush Limbaugh’s Florida home after a suspicious package showed up in his mail. Apparently wires were visible – never a good sign- and Limbaugh’s security team called authorities . Fortunately, they discovered nothing harmful after all. The suspect package sent to the talk radio mogul turned out to be an electronic plaque having to do with Abraham Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. Yes, we’re serious, and have no more details, sorry. The package, whatever it was, was Limbaugh by a fan in Pennsylvania for a business-opportunity-related purpose, according to the Palm Beach Police. No charges will be filed against the sender, who was very apologetic after the incident played out, reports say, because no crime has been committed. Whether or not Limbaugh wants anything to do with the package, which was deemed safe to open, is up to him. Maybe he’ll talk about it on air today.

Warner Bros. Somehow Planning Another I Am Legend for Will Smith

At one point following the critical and commercial success of his 2007 post-apocalyptic blockbuster I Am Legend , director Francis Lawrence entertained the notion of coming back with star Will Smith for prequel, but eventually that possibility trailed off and Lawrence casted doubt onto his involvement with the potential project. But today Warner Bros. announced a deal with Akiva Goldsman and Overbrook Entertainment , who have tapped screenwriter Arash Amel to write a follow-up to the $584M hit. Whether or not it’ll be a prequel or some sort of direct sequel is unknown, though it’s reportedly being created for Smith. Let’s speculate away: Just how WB can possibly pull off another installment? What makes the project a curious — and, frankly, conspicuous — one is the way in which Lawrence wrapped up I Am Legend , based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 sci-fi novel. [Spoiler alert] Following a global pandemic that wiped out 90% of the world’s population, scientist Robert Neville (Smith) had only just discovered a cure when, at the film’s conclusion, he faced an onslaught of mutated vampire-people solo and seemingly met his own demise. Of course WB wants their star and his famously potent box office draw to headline another I Am Legend movie. A prequel would explain Smith’s presence most easily, but Deadline suggests that won’t be the case. So how might they bring Smith back otherwise? Retcon the last scene in the first film, using the alternate ending in which Neville makes grudging peace with the vampire thingies? Maybe the survivors colony has cloning capabilities? Hell, why not bring in a long-lost twin brother for Neville who became a brilliant virologist as well – I Am Also Legend ? Whatever it turns out to be, at least it has a shot at being ” one of the greatest movies ever made ,” amirite? Warner Bros Plans More ‘I Am Legend’ With Will Smith [Deadline]

Nancy Grace Defends Whitney Houston Comments, Gets Served by Dan Abrams on GMA

Dan Abrams is our new hero. The Good Morning America host remained calm and reasonable in the face of Nancy Grace’s condescending absurdity today, as he tried to get Grace to admit that she shouldn’t have wondered about whether or not someone pushed Whitney Houston’s body under water in her hotel room last Saturday. What prompted Grace to hint at that possibility? Nothing in this case, merely her experience as an attorney overall, which gives her a unique view on what comes next. Nancy Grace on Good Morning America “There is nothing delicate or nice about a murder, a death, an unexpected death, or an autopsy,” Grace said. “What that means in the real world, not the ivory tower of Harvard Law School… an autopsy, of why her body was transported to the Coroner’s Office, is to determine cause of death whether it be overdose, natural causes, accident, or homicide. It is not a homicide and I am thankful for that, but I still want the truth.” Okay. That makes her the same as about 100 million other Americans. Why utter a word about anyone shoving Whitney’s head under water? Abrams tried to get his guest to focus on this specific question. “I’m arguing with you over going on television and making a comment that I think was rightfully viewed as inappropriate,” he says in the video above. “And sometimes there’s a time to say ‘you know what, I shouldn’t have said that in retrospect. A nicer way to say that, or a more accurate way to say that, would have been x, y, or z.'” Of course, Grace remained obstinate, and Robin Roberts ended the segment with a simple, obvious point. Well… an obvious point to anyone not looking cash in on a well-publicized death. Why not just wait until the autopsy results are released before commenting at all?
