The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Apollo Nida pleaded guilty to charges of mail, wire and bank fraud in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He could be going to jail for a long, long time. Apollo Nida’s crimes could land him in prison for up to 30 years and a fine of up to $1 million on top of restitution for an estimated $2.3 million he allegedly defrauded. His co-conspirator Gayla St. Julien, who said Nida ran the show and helped turn him in after she was arrested, has received a sentence of 61 months last month. Nida will be sentenced on July 8 at 2 p.m. The assistant U.S. attorney said Apollo opened a fake debt collection agency to gain access to databases full of individuals’ personal information. He would then steal people’s ID and find unclaimed funds , refunds from HUD, stolen treasury checks and refunds from fraudulent U.S. income tax returns. Nida had St. Julien open UPS mailboxes and bank checking accounts using those fake identities, deposit those checks, then pocket the money. So why would he do it when he’s already well taken care of by wife Phaedra Parks? Partly for that reason, he said in court. The pressure to keep up was intense! Nida said he takes “full responsibility for my actions” and expressed regret for hurting his family and any individuals and institutions affected by his fraud. Apollo Nida Pleads Guilty In ID Theft Scheme “It was a dumb situation I put myself in,” he said. In 2009, Nida had just left prison after five years for racketeering charges related to auto title fraud. He and Phaedra Parks , a prominent attorney, married. He said she was making far more than him and he felt pressure to keep up. Without easy legitimate ways to make quick money, he opted for this scheme. He said he even had a nervous breakdown at one point over the pressures to “sustain a lifestyle … I got sucked in and engulfed and lost sight of things,” he said. But he claimed to her he was running a legitimate debt recovery firm and kept her firmly in the dark. And once he started the scheme, he found it difficult to stop. Nida said he often didn’t think about whether this was hurting anybody because he was primarily targeting businesses and the government, not individuals. “It’s my fault at the end of the day,” he said. Valerie Harper is being sued by a New York playwright who says she ruined his play by withholding her brain cancer diagnosis, a claim she says is outrageous. He wants $2 million as a result of her alleged deception, while she insists no one was more surprised at the return of her cancer than Valerie herself. In the lawsuit, filed last December, Broadway bigwig Matthew Lombardo accused the Mary Tyler Moore Show star , 74, of keeping her illness a secret. This caused her to unexpectedly drop out of the 2013 play, Looped , which he says he invested big time in with the understanding she would perform. But in new court documents, the Dancing With the Stars alum claims she believed she was in cancer remission, having had successfully undergone surgery. She says she had no idea the cancer had returned and spread to her brain until January 2013, a month after she had re-signed her contract for Looped . She also disputes Lombardo’s claim that she was hospitalized for a recurrence of her cancer in January 2012, causing her to miss the day’s rehearsal. The star’s longtime husband, producer Tony Cacciotti, “took Ms. Harper to the hospital from the rehearsal because he feared that she had a stroke.” Harper is requesting the suit be dismissed, and that Lombardo pay legal fees. Elena Baltacha, a former member of the Top 50 of the Women’s Tennis Association, died over the weekend after a long battle with liver cancer. She was 30 years old. The WTA confirmed this sad news on its website, writing that the Kiev-born Baltacha died peacefully while surrounded by family and friends. Baltacha represented Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics and was diagnosed with the diseased in January, two months after retiring from tennis and just weeks after getting married. “We are heartbroken beyond words at the loss of our beautiful, talented and determined Bally,” husband Nino Severino said in a statement. “She was an amazing person and she touched so many people with her inspirational spirit, her warmth and her kindness.” Baltacha dealt with a chronic liver condition throughout her career, receiving medication and regular blood tests. But that didn’t stop her from reaching number-one in England. “Elena’s journey was never an easy one and yet she consistently showed her strength, good humor and indomitable spirit,” WTA chairman Stacey Allaster said. Prior to her passing, Baltacha had organized a tennis charity event in June, “Rally for Bally,” to raise money for a cancer hospital and her tennis academy.
