E-40 Talks DJs Fronting On West Coast Music, Supporting Wiz Khalifa & Getting Independent Money

More:

E-40 has been in the game for more than 20 years and has never seemed to take time off. He first hit the scene in ’88 as the lead member of The Click. He is most known for his ability to create new slang which always seems to catch on globally right after the words leave his mouth. In 2011 E-40 has released two albums “Revenue Retrieving: Graveyard Shift & Overtime Shift” on the same day. E-40 spoke with @ JazzyF about the new album, being independent, the state of West Coast hip-hop music and more. Check it out below! TUD: Would you say E-40 creates the slang or are you just responsible for making it mainstream? E-40: You know it’s a little of both. I’m from the bay area where it started, we trend setters. You got words like Po-Po, Captain Save a Hoe, Fo Shizzy, Fo Shizzle. I make up many words but we can go on for forever about slang words that E-40 created. That has always been one of my things since was youngster. I have always being creative with my words. Do you feel you’re under-rated and overlooked in the rap game? I’m under-rated off top, I feel I am the best game spitter.  I talk about things that real street cats can relate to. If you ain’t around it or in it, I feel you should not be listening to me. The songs they hear on the radio are watered down, they haven’t heard my ghetto anthems. I speak to the real cats and females because they can relate to me. I speak the real and a lot of people don’t understand because they haven’t been a part of the hustle to make ends meet. They don’t know it’s a whole new generation right now and I’m not knocking the young generation because some of them listen to me but a lot don’t because they haven’t been sat down and schooled. Why does it seem like E-40 been on chill mode? On the west coast we don’t hear a lot of songs get on the radio or BET  and MTV because of the formats. Some of the networks go by how many spins you have on radio. We don’t have urban stations here on the west coast, the closest thing we have is  top 40 crossover radio so you don’t really see us on MTV or BET. Last year I had the biggest song on the west coast called “Bitch” and we cleaned it up and called it “Trick.” 50 cent hopped on the remix and we sent it out independently. My thing is that I might not be a part of the major but I get the fan base of an artist that’s on a major and I have the same distribution of a major. I use my outlets now that I’m already famous so I don’t need a major. People want to know who signed me, I signed me years ago. We sold tapes out the trunk of the car. We had no internet, no radio no nothing. It was just word of mouth, hood shit. All the people across the country were messing with  E-40 and the click. I never took my foot of the brake and if I did take a break I must of put a lot of ketchup on my fries. I put out 2 albums out last year “Day Shift “and “Night Shift.” I sold 8,000 records in Dallas, that’s a lot for one city and it’s independent. I got “Revenue Retrieving/Overnight Shift” and “Graveyard Shift” dropped on the same day March 29th as Wiz Khalifa and Snoop’s album but I’m not trying to compete with them. I know Wiz is the new kid on the block, not like the group. He is doing his thing so I take my hat off to him. It’s all about maintaining. I don’t have to sell a million records to make the same amount as a artist that sell a million records. I’m independent, ghetto golden. If I sell 100,000 I get goudaed up ya feel me. How do feel about west coast music not getting the amount of radio play it use to? We guilty by affiliation. Everybody wants everything to sound the same. DJs set tripping like that’s west coast music. No disrespect to the song “Make It Rain” but if you aint making it rain on your song it’s like you ain’t getting no love. It’s like you got to go out of your element to get love. It’s nice to have video play, radio play but as long as I can work my virals on the internet or yet get it out to where people hear it and can see it anytime, I’m cool. As long as everytime you pull up to a gas station and you got people from all different walks of life bumping my music from the hood to the suburbs, I’m not tripping. I’m good because I’m eating. I always been ahead of my time. I masterminded independent grinding with this rap shit. I was independent in ’88 when my first album came out and I got gold and platinum albums and singles. Now I’m ghetto gold, f*ck double platinum. I’m trying to go double profit. I just hope one day all the DJs stop saying “aww thats west coast music, “when they know they was on it back in the day real talk. I’m not begging them to play me because it’s a lot some fake DJs and radio programming thats closed minded and don’t like nothing different but it’s some real ones out there that f*ck with me. How did you come up with the album titles? Revenue Retrieving came from paper chasing so it was like “what’s another name for paper chasing ?”cuz we been saying that for years. I came up with “Gouda collecting,” “fetti fetching.” Gouda is money, that’s cheese and chasing is getting it. So revenue is money and retrieving is bringing it back so we “Revenue Retrieving.” People don’t understand that everything I say has a meaning and they’ll be using it years from now. Remember I had everyone and their momma popping their collar. I was the first one popping my collar. Why did you choose the artists you collaborated with on this album? I got some people I wanted to make music with for a while. I ain’t tripping about how big your name is and if your popping right now. I had T-Pain on one of my singles before anyone really knew of him. I was the first one to put that to life of having T-Pain on the hook. I got T-Pain, Devin the dude, Bun B, Slim Thug & Tech N9ne. I worked with a lot of my friends. I got my potnas Black sheep, Juice and we just doing it man. The albums are ridiculous. Whats going on with the Hifey movement? Not on a mainstream level, hifey is a real movement. The word hifey is a street name for a wild ass motherfucker. It originated in Oakland where I shot the “tell me when to go” video. I, too short and click started the mob music. That’s a sound that a lot of cats in the bay grew up on and aint nothing really change. You can get dumb on any type of tempo just doing your thing.  But when people hear up tempo they automatically think it’s hifey music. Aint nothing new under the sun. What are your thoughts on the new generation being criticized by the vets? I don’t think old cats really have any control over the new cats, as far as letting them in. What are the old artists supposed to do just quit? I work with a lot of the new cats. They keep me fresh and I keep them fresh. An OG need a young dude around and a young dude need a OG around. They keep me fresh and I keep the gamed up. I like when a youngster has a lot of talent and self-esteem towards their hustle. Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Cover: ‘American Chopper’ Star Weighs In

Paul Teutul Jr. tells MTV News he’s puzzled by Gaga’s motorcycle makeover. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images When Lady Gaga unveiled the cover art for her much-anticipated Born This Way album over the weekend, even the most manic of Little Monsters seemed perplexed by her brand-new motorcycle makeover … with some even going so far as to speculate that the cover was fake . And if you think Gaga’s fans are confused by the BTW cover, well, then you should hear Paul Teutul Jr.’s take on it. After all, he designs motorcycles for a living, first under his dad’s tutelage at Orange County Choppers — made famous on Discovery Channel’s “American Choppers” — and now with his own shop, Paul Jr. Designs . Turns out Junior’s sort of at a loss when it comes to Gaga’s new look. “This chopper is very, kind of, uh, interesting. They kind of melted the motor around and stuff so it’s hard to even see what they have … they almost did a ribcage, kinda see-through in the tank. But none of it feels really smooth,” he told MTV News. “The bike that it emulates the most is that ‘Easy Rider’ bike … it has that king and queen seat, it’s got the old-school exhaust, but I can’t really tell what kind of bike it is.” Of course, aside from the assumed technical issues, Teutul Jr. said that he’s most puzzled that the Born This Way album cover didn’t go even further. Because, as he put it, what could be cooler than a full-fledged Gaga-cycle? “Looking at it, I would’ve made it more of an integration of her into the bike. It would be more seamless. In other words, it would be her and the bike morphed,” he said. “If you’re Born This Way, then it almost has to look kind of mermaid-ish, in the sense that there’s this fusion between the actual mechanical aspect and the human perspective. … It’s a little cut-and-paste looking. I would’ve done something even integrated throughout the bike that would’ve been more ‘Lady Gaga.’ “How awesome would it have been if her entire body, like, her feet actually became the axle rod for the rear tire, and her body actually formed the entire bike? I mean, it could’ve been a more flowing, freakier look,” he continued. “And that’s what we do at Paul Jr. Designs. Our full integration isn’t ‘put a sticker on it.’ Our full integration is we make that bike what the theme is intended to be. It’s about pulling off the theme front-to-back.” And to that end, Teutul Jr. said that he’d love to work with Gaga on an actual motorcycle &#8212 it’d probably make for an interesting episode of his show, “American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior,” which returns April 25 &#8212 because it would give him and his team a chance to do what they do best. “I would get inside her head on the whole project, and really be able to pull off what it is, creatively, that she would want integrated into the bike,” he said. “And for this tour, she could come out onstage and it could be a whole theatrical thing that ties around the actual album cover. I think it would be a great fit and we’re both young and creative. It would be a great collaboration for sure.” What do you think of the Born This Way cover art? Tell us in the comments! Britney Spears: Dancing "Till The World Ends" in Second Version of Music Video!

Britney Spears has just released an alternate version of her music video for “Till The World Ends,” and this one is light on apocalypse, heavy on Britney. Focused almost exclusively on the pop star’s dance moves and less on the original’s crazy special effects, it’s a more traditional music video in a sense. No end-of-the-world shots, doomsday references or general craziness here. Just dancing, partying and a sprinkler system. In other words … NICE! Britney Spears – DANCE Till The World Ends Check out the original version after the jump and see which of the two you like better. Videos aside, it’s one of her catchier tunes in years, right? Paris Hilton 2011

Paris Hilton on Wednesday for being a complete dumbass. Well those aren#39;t the words they used, but that#39;s pretty much what they meant. From the New York Daily News: Allianz is charging that she has yet to return the $60,000 in borrowed Damiani jewelry that was stolen as part of a $2.8 million jewelry heist in December 2008 at her Los Angeles estate.

Was Pia Toscano’s Exit The Most Shocking In ‘American Idol’ History?

Experts say Pia’s ninth-place finish is up there with Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, Tamyra Gray. By Gil Kaufman Pia Toscano appears on “American Idol” on Thursday Photo: FOX For die-hard “American Idol” fans, every week’s elimination is a gut-punch, a “c’mon, really?” moment where they can’t believe America didn’t vote to keep their favorite singer on the show. But from the moment Pia Toscano hit the bottom three for the first time to the jaw-dropping realization that she was going home in ninth place, Thursday night’s elimination felt like an “Idol”-quake of possibly historic proportions. The contestants seemed stunned, Randy Jackson held his head and said “no, no” and then appeared to mouth an expletive, and Jennifer Lopez was brought to tears at the realization that one of the most viable female contestants in recent “Idol” history was gone and that the judges appeared to have squandered their save on commercially suspect Casey Abrams. “I’m really bummed about this. It just sucks,” said longtime “Idol” watcher and TVLine.com “Idol” recapper Michael Slezak. “One of the main factors is the judges. There’s been a complete absence of any kind of guidance from the judging panel, which opens up the prospect of ‘vote for your favorite.’ And if you pick your favorite early on, you stick with them and vote 500 times a night no matter how they perform.” Slezak faulted the show for pushing viewers to vote for their favorites rather than the best performances, and he said while this might not be the most shocking “Idol” elimination of all time, it is definitely the most disappointing in the show’s history. Yes, in retrospect, it was a bummer that now-successful rocker Chris Daughtry went out in fourth place ahead of eventual winner Taylor Hicks and that veteran backup singer Melinda Doolittle left in third place behind runner-up beatboxer Blake Lewis in season six. And nobody can ever forget (or forgive) the seventh-place finish of eventual Oscar and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson in season three. But Slezak said Toscano’s ouster is perhaps the most troubling for what it says about the 10th season of “Idol.” After seemingly getting on a roll with the fresh energy of new judges Lopez and Steven Tyler and a ratings boost and some buzz, he said the show has slid into dangerous territory over the past few weeks that may put it on a road to ruin. “At least with Tamyra [Gray] and Daughtry, they finished fourth, so there were five more weeks of performances, and you could see the full scope of what they could do,” he said. “We were still finding out who Pia was. and she could have grown more, and now we’ll never see that.” He said after a good start and a rebound from a terrible season nine, this sets “Idol” back 20 paces because Pia felt like someone who could really sell albums, as opposed to a “cute guy” who voters will text in their support for 500 times but probably never buy an album from. Also disappointed was “Idol” blogger MJ Santilli , who said, for her, it was definitely one of the most shocking eliminations ever on the show. “It’s easy to forget what a terrible contestant Jennifer Hudson was in light of her recent successes,” she said of Hudson’s up-and-down run on “Idol.” “Daughtry’s boot came toward the end of the contest, when pretty much anything can happen. Plus, by top four, it was pretty clear that Taylor Hicks was kicking his ass. I would say the same for Tamyra. Her ouster came close to the end of the competition. Kelly Clarkson had already gained momentum,” she said of the other singers whose early boots have set the shock standard for the show. Santilli said Pia seemed destined for a Gray-esque boot in fourth or fifth place, because, like Gray, she was a technically proficient singer who didn’t excite viewers. “But the idea of so many of Pia’s fellow Idols outlasting her was unfathomable,” she said. Slezak said one thing that is clear after Thursday’s result is that the judges have “Pia’s blood” on their hands. “For Randy to sit there slack-jawed and J.Lo to force out tears … after the last two weeks, the idea of giving actual critiques went out the window,” he said. “The last two weeks, everyone gets a gold star. When you give everyone the same gold star, it’s confusing. There are nine performances in 90 minutes and a lot happens, and it’s their job to give voters a sense of direction … who is working and who might be a viable recording artist. Otherwise, why have them up there if they say everyone is great?” In other words, after lots of talk about how nobody was missing meanie go-to judge Simon Cowell this season, it seems viewers are, indeed, in need of his strong, guiding hand. Another potential problem, Slezak noted, is that after 10 seasons, the newness of voting has worn off and perhaps some voters are thinking, “Why should I vote for Pia 20 times when some teenager in her bedroom is going to text 400 times” for the cute guy? Do you think Pia’s elimination is the most shocking in “Idol” history? Let us know in comment below. Hayley Williams On Cosmo Cover: ‘Sexy Is Whatever You Want It To Be’

Paramore frontwoman says she hopes her Cosmopolitan cover will inspire fans, challenge the conventional notion of sexy. By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams on the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine Photo: Cosmopolitan Hayley Williams can currently be seen on the cover of the May issue of Cosmopolitan magazine and, somewhat understandably, she’s excited (“really excited”) about that fact. But rather than just let the photos speak for themselves, the Paramore singer has decided to talk about them — and her decision to do the cover shoot in the first place — in a new blog post on her band’s LiveJournal page . “I wanna talk about the Cosmo cover. It’s a little more than a big deal to me,” she wrote. “To the general public, Cosmo is either a) a woman’s obsession, or b) a woman’s demise … Honestly, either of the two options equal out to be the same damn thing. It’s easy to let all the images of all these Godlike-looking women whisper to us how we think we’re supposed to look. It’s like, ‘Here, look at my boobs! Don’t you wish you had these?’ “And you know what? It’s never gonna change,” she continued. “As much as I tell myself I don’t care and I wear whatever I want, there will always be those moments when I’m at the checkout line at Target and I see some gorgeous person on the cover of any ol’ rag, and I’m like, ‘Ugh, is that how it’s gotta be?’ Only to realize that, next month, that girl on the cover is gonna be me.” Williams then goes on to explain why she agreed to do the Cosmo cover, and how it fits into not only her role within Paramore, but her new outlook on life, as well. “My #1 goal when the band began was to make myself invisible. Not only did I not want to be the focal point, I wanted to be unseen! And honestly, it never made a difference,” she wrote. “It never made people focus on me any less … so this time I’m taking a different approach. All three of us in Paramore have our own roles, and finally I will accept mine. I’m going to be okay with being a ‘powerful female.’ And if that’s what it is, I’m going to use that role to make a difference. “Here’s my course of action,” she continued. “I will be myself. I will grow up. And I most definitely will find the time in my own life to be sexy if I feel like it. Who wrote the rules? Who said that a girl that lives in this same T-shirt and jeans nearly every day won’t wanna wear pumps and a short skirt tomorrow. And I’m hoping by seeing my crazy mug on a magazine cover, some girl who’s having a not-particularly-liberated day will think to herself that the May cover looks just a little different than the usual Cosmo cover and hopefully they can even be inspired. No, I don’t think I’m some kind of saving grace … but I do know that I never thought of myself as conventionally beautiful nor sexy. … I’m hoping that the more a magazine will take a chance on a girl like me, the more a girl will have a frickin’ chance in hell to be unique, powerful, strong in her weaknesses, confident in her flaws. Because that’s who I’m trying to become.” She closed by telling her fans that “sexy is whatever you want it to be … it’s up to you,” and then backed up that assertion by poking fun at the rather unfortunate cover line (“75 Sex Moves Men Crave”) that accompanied her image. “For the record, I really was hoping one of the headlines would be ’69 Ways to 69,’ but I guess it was a no go,” she wrote. “Honestly, I don’t think they could come up with that many.” What’s your opinion about what Hayley wrote regarding her appearance on the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine?
