Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner Dies

George Steinbrenner, who bought a declining New York Yankees team in 1973 and left an indelible mark on sports’ most storied franchise, has died. He was 80. In an often tumultuous reign, in which he promised to stay out of the team’s daily affairs but often did not, the Bronx Bombers won seven of their 27 titles. Just as impressively, he build the franchise into a global powerhouse valued at over $1 billion. Having retired to Tampa, Fla., he turned 80 this past July 4. A rep for the family said in a statement: “It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing . He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80.” George Steinbrenner, left, with former N.Y. City mayor Rudy Giuliani. “He was an incredible and charitable man. Funeral arrangements will be private. There will be an additional public service with details to be announced.” Steinbrenner’s death comes nine months after the Yankees won their first World Series title since 2000, beating the Phillies at the new Yankee Stadium. The magnate, whose infamous, blustering ways lessened considerably in recent years, had been in failing health since 2006, rarely appearing in public. Introduced at the inaugural game of the new stadium he constructed in April 2009, he received an ovation, at which point shoulders shook and he cried. Rest in peace, George.

Spotted: Alex Rodriguez and Cameron Diaz!

Yankees star Alex Rodriguez may have hit his 11th home run during last night’s game, but his most exciting trip around the bases took place hours later! We mean he may be hitting it with Cameron Diaz. A-Rod and his New York teammates were in Los Angeles over the weekend to take on the Dodgers, and the slugger may have a new good luck charm . After parading around with Kate Hudson and winning his first World Series with the Yankees last season, might Cameron Diaz fit the bill here in 2010? Here’s a picture of them out and about in L.A.: CALEX : This isn’t the first rendezvous for Cameron and Alex . The Rod and the actress made no attempt at hiding their relationship on Friday, dining at Soho House with friends, including his manager Guy Oseary. Guy, of course, also happens to be manager of Madonna, another famous A-Rod ex (his first famous fling after splitting from wife Cynthia Rodriguez). He has eyes only for Cameron now, however. Reports have surfaced for months regarding the two grinding on each other and so on. It’s totally on. “A-Rod and Cameron were very cute and affectionate,” says an eyewitness at the restaurant. “They were cuddling and he had his arm around her.” “You can tell they really like each other.” Another bonus for Diaz? She didn’t have to travel far for the c*ck this time. Her words. You just gotta go where that is, as she recently told Playboy .

Liverpool talk to Manuel Pellegrini over vacant manager’s job

• Kenny Dalglish meets former Real Madrid coach • Roy Hodgson remains favourite to take over at Anfield Manuel Pellegrini, the former Real Madrid coach, has held talks with Kenny Dalglish over the managerial vacancy at Liverpool despite Roy Hodgson remaining the club’s preferred candidate to succeed Rafael Benítez at Anfield. Pellegrini was dismissed by Real last month for failing to deliver in the Champions League or beat Barcelona to the title, although he did produce a club record 96 points during his one and only season at the Bernabéu. The Chilean’s agent last night denied reports that the 56-year-old met Dalglish at Heathrow airport but Pellegrini was in England yesterday and did meet the Liverpool legend who is overseeing the search for Benítez’s replacement alongside the managing director, Christian Purslow. Dalglish has told the Liverpool board that he would like the job in the absence of any superior candidates. Negotiations with Pellegrini, who worked with the Liverpool goalkeeperJosé Reina during a successful five-year spell in charge of Villarreal, reveal that Anfield officials are working through a short-list of candidates to succeed Benítez, although it is understood Hodgson remains top of that list. The Fulham manager has yet to receive an official approach from Liverpool and last night reaffirmed his contentment at Craven Cottage from South Africa, where he is commentating for the BBC. Asked about Liverpool’s interest, Hodgson said: “I’m happy at Fulham. It is all speculation and I can’t enlighten you. I don’t know any more than you do.” An official move for Hodgson from Liverpool is anticipated next week, however. Liverpool Roy Hodgson Kenny Dalglish Andy Hunter guardian.co.uk

World Cup 2010: Horns still stay silent for the underdog USA | Ed Pilkington

The USA doubled viewing figures against England but soccer remains in a halfway house between success and failure If lack of bunting in the street is any indication, America appears to be living up to its reputation for glorious isolation. While the rest of the globe is already gripped by World Cup fever, here in the US there are scant outward signs of football – or rather soccer – obsession. There are no Stars and Stripes in the windows beyond the usual patriotic quota, no cars honking horns as goals are scored. Very few papers across the country lived up to the chutzpah of the New York Post, which plastered its post-England game front page with the headline: “USA wins 1-1”. In the American heartlands excitement levels were decidedly muted by comparison, despite that impressive scoreline. The Houston Chronicle was far more interested in college American football than in the England battle, even though Saturday’s goalscorer Clint Dempsey is a local boy from Nacogdoches in Texas. But it would be wrong to imply that this country is indifferent to the World Cup. Last Saturday, sports bars across the US were packed with fans, from the 2,000 who watched the game in Studio Square in New York to thousands more who squatted in the home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team to watch the match on its big screen. About 17 million Americans watched the England game on television – a relatively piddly number compared with the 106m who sat transfixed in February as the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl. But that’s still double the viewing figures during the opening round of the 2006 World Cup, and it even outstrips the popularity of the recent Stanley Cup, the culmination of the 2009-10 season in ice hockey – a game that is considered an American staple. Christopher Harris, who runs MajorLeagueSoccerTalk.com from his home in Florida, thinks US football is finally coming of age. “At this point soccer has become a mainstream sport in television viewing, and that’s the first time you can really say that.” Jason Davis of MatchFitUSA.com is not quite so upbeat. “Soccer here is still fairly under the surface. It’s almost like a secret language – fans don’t talk about it much, because it’s hard to tell who’s into it and who’s not.” The strength of the World Cup following in America probably lies somewhere in the middle of Harris’s optimism and Davis’s uncertainty. Evidence of the sport’s halfway house between success and failure can be seen in the coverage the match against England received from the US media. Commentators felt they could only convey the significance of the game by invoking baseball lore; the beautiful game could not be allowed to speak for itself. So the magnitude of Robert Green’s mishandling of Dempsey’s shot had to be likened to the famous occasion when Bill Buckner, playing for the Boston Red Sox in the 1986 World Series, let the ball slip through his legs, ultimately costing his team the championship. Just how far the love of the sport grows through this World Cup depends, of course, in large part on how the US team gets on, and that in turn depends on the patchy quality of its squad. Tim Howard in goal has already achieved hero status across the States after his performance on Saturday, and with players like Carlos Bocanegra and Landon Donovan the defence and mid-field are proving solid. But there are question marks surrounding the strikers – Jozy Altidore, Edson Buddle, Robbie Findley and Herculez Gomez – and their ability to score. The next challenge is Slovenia today in Johannesburg, a fixture that is filling American soccer fans with some trepidation. Both Harris and Davis expect the USA to go through to the last 16, but they are divided over the prospect of facing the mighty Germany. “We’ve got the mentality and the psychology of a strong and united team,” Harris says, “and as for Germany, USA always plays best when they are the underdog.” Davis, again, is not so sure. “If we have to face Germany, that would be difficult, and I don’t see us going on.” World Cup 2010 USA Ed Pilkington guardian.co.uk

Alicia Keys And Swizz Beatz: A Timeline Of Their Romance

Pair have been dating for at least a couple of years. By Jayson Rodriguez Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Alicia Keys and Swizz Beats announced late Thursday evening (May 27) that they’re engaged, and that the Grammy-winning singer is expecting the couple’s first child together. The news might have been a surprise to some: Keys is an R&B/ pop superstar who has performed at President Barack Obama’s inauguration , while Swizz (real name: Kasseem Dean) is a Ruff Ryders alumnus and a veteran hip-hop producer who’s laced Jay-Z and DMX with some of their grittiest tracks. But the musical couple have been dating for a couple of years, at least since 2008, when rumors of their union began to swirl — and recently whispers about the two ratcheted up when photos of Keys with what appeared to be a baby bump appeared online. Here’s a timeline of the couple’s relationship: > > In 2008, music-industry insiders began buzzing about a pairing between Swizz — then married to R&B chanteuse Mashonda — and Keys, but the speculation turned public when gossip blog TheYBF.com published a post detailing their union, citing a source close to the singer. > > Later in 2008, Alicia Keys threw a surprise birthday party for the art-collecting producer (who by then was separated from his wife) at New York’s Guggenheim Museum. Although they wouldn’t appear in public together until the following year, the shindig solidified that the two were an item. > > In 2009, Swizz Beatz all but confirmed his relationship with Keys through a remix verse he added to Drake’s hit, “Best I Ever Had,” rapping, “She gave me a party at the Guggenheim … What’s next? The ring? The baby? She really loves me.” > > Throughout the year, Keys and Swizz (engaged in a messy divorce from Mashonda , including public spat on Twitter) were spotted together at a bevy of events, including his pre-Grammy Awards event, Game 3 of World Series (where she performed alongside Jay-Z ), and a swank Whitney Houston album preview event; the musical pair worked together to produce the Houston single “Million Dollar Bill.” > > This year, the duo have been frequently photographed together, both domestically and abroad; flicks of Keys performing across the Atlantic caused a stir online as the singer’s loose fitting clothing led many to believe she was hiding a baby bump. > > On Thursday, a spokesperson for the couple confirmed that they were engaged and are expecting their first child together. The baby will be her first and his third; producer has two other children from previous relationships. What do you think about Swizz Beats and Alicia Keys relationship? Let us know in the comments! A-Rod and Cameron Diaz: Still Grinding?

Cameron Diaz and Alex Rodriguez raised eyebrows when they flirted and were grinding hard core at the Creative Artists Agency Super Bowl party in Miami. Now, a few months later, their relationship has reportedly developed into much more, an insider close to the New York Yankees slugger tells Life & Style . “A-Rod’s with Cameron,” the insider reveals, and then some. “They’ve been keeping it quiet, but they’re totally together.” We doubt it, unless Cameron likes to keep a very, very low profile. A-Rod’s last actress fling, Kate Hudson , was front and center at every frickin’ game. Then again, they won the World Series, so … Alex Rodriguez and Cameron Diaz: “Totally smitten.” When the photographers weren’t around, “they were all over each other at the CAA party,” says an onlooker . “Cameron had her hands all over Alex’s back.” Whoa, stop right there, this is a family site! “They were dancing together. They also left the party together that night,” the source adds, noting that they are in no rush to acknowledge the relationship. “Alex recently arranged to fly Cameron to Miami. He used to fly Kate Hudson there all the time, and no one knew that they were dating for a long while.” “Alex is very discreet.” Well, except for when he was cheating on Cynthia Rodriguez with that manly stripper. Stray-Rod kind of let his guard down there. Oh well, live and learn.

Papi Copy: Jay-Z Sues David Ortiz Over Club Name

Rapper and noted Yankee fan Jay-Z is suing Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz for opening a nightclub in his native Dominican Republic named “Forty-Forty.” Jay-Z thinks that’s a sample that’s too close to his line of “sports lounges” which carry the “40/40 Club” name … even if Big Papi is spelling out the digits. Jay-Z and business partner Juan Perez own 40/40 Clubs in New York City, Atlantic City and Las Vegas and have plans to open venues in Tokyo and Macau. They have accused Ortiz of “trading on the fame, value and goodwill of their name through his club Forty/Forty and its website, www.fortyforty.net.” Okay, but would he sue Alex Rodriguez for the same thing? Just asking. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK : If you can’t beat ’em, sue ’em! Wait, the Yankees won the World Series last year. Never mind. That’s just adding insult to injury then . The lawsuit also notes that “David Ortiz is fully aware of plaintiff’s Manhattan 40/40 Club, since he had been a patron there on several occasions.” Jay-Z named his club “40/40” because in baseball, that refers to a 40-home run, 40-steal season, or “as exclusive as it gets.” Cool name for a club. An odd choice for Ortiz to rip off, though, as he is one of the slowest land mammals to ever roam this planet, having recorded just 10 thefts career. Make he just likes the food (clearly his waist line would corroborate that)… or he means 40 injections in 40 days, or some better steroid reference.
