‘Going The Distance’ Stars Share Romantic Gestures Gone Awry

Drew Barrymore recalls an ex’s unsuccessful love letter, while Justin Long’s flower purchase backfires. By Kara Warner Justin Long and Drew Barrymore Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images The topic of love and relationships is a loaded one. It’s full of drama, angst, joy — basically a smorgasbord of complex emotions that, no matter how serious and life-changing, can also be rife for comedic interpretation. One such interpretation is Drew Barrymore and Justin Long’s R-rated romp “Going the Distance,” which opens Friday. In the film, the are-they-or-aren’t-they-dating Barrymore and Long play a new couple who try to make a long-distance relationship work. There are expensive plane tickets, romantic gestures, arguments, etc. Speaking to the romantic gestures, because there are a few in the film, we asked Barrymore and Long if they had ever had one backfire. “I once got sent an e-mail that was written in a sarcastic tone, but the person buried the lead and didn’t say he was joking,” Barrymore said of an ex’s attempt at a love letter. “So everything in it was as horrible as you can imagine. That wasn’t funny. That was a really poorly executed romantic gesture. I remember another boyfriend, he bought me a cameo [silhouette pendant], and he said it reminded him of me. And I thought, ‘This old, silhouetted lady reminds you of me? Huh. OK.’ ” Long (who was not the giver of the aforementioned cameo) revealed that his good-intentions-gone-bad gesture involved an unfortunate mix-up of an ex’s preference in flowers. “This was actually a Valentine’s Day thing,” he said. “I went to the florist, and I saw these amazing orchids. There were, like, six orchids. It was tons of money … but I thought, ‘I’m going to do it. These are beautiful, and I’m pretty sure this person loves orchids,’ ” Long recalled. “I brought them home. She was always so appreciative of just the smallest gestures I did, so I was like, ‘Her head’s going to explode.’ ” Unfortunately for Long, his memory was a little skewed. “She was like [ he winces ] ‘I … oh … thank you,’ ” Long re-enacted. “She had this story that was like a really troubling, traumatic experience that had happened to her that involved orchids that she had told me. I knew there was something with orchids, I just didn’t remember that it was an awful association. It was bad. She was molested by a guy named Fred Orchid,” he joked. As Freddie Begs for More Cash, AP’s Zibel Perpetuates Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac Myths

There are quite a few shaky assertions in Alan Zibel’s Associated Press report yesterday about Freddie Mac’s latest quarterly loss ($6 billion), its latest bailout installment request to the U.S. Treasury ($1.8 billion), and the cumulative taxpayer bailout amounts that have been paid out to Freddie Mac and big sister Fannie Mae thus far ($148.2 billion) — too many to cover in a blog post. So I’ll concentrate on the howlers present in just a single paragraph near the end, wherein the AP reporter attempts to explain why the two formerly government-sponsored mortgage giants that are now government-bailout enterprises ran into the ditch. The verbiage pretty much states the meme that the establishment press seems to want the public to swallow about what went down, and who’s to blame: During the housing boom, Fannie and Freddie faced political pressure to expand homeownership and competitive pressure from Wall Street to back ever-riskier loans. When the market went bust, defaults and foreclosures piled up, and the government had to take them over. Zibel treats the two giants as if they were innocent bystanders in a boom that “just so happened” to coincide with the political pressures it faced. Nonsense. It’s more accurate to say that Fan and Fred fed the boom to the point of being its major cause . Many already know that in 1999, Fannie Mae announced looser lending standards (Fred soon followed; go here to see what this specifically meant). Even the New York Times was a bit concerned at the time: In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980’s. ”From the perspective of many people, including me, this is another thrift industry growing up around us,” said Peter Wallison a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. ”If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.” Probably much more important is something that is about the best-kept secret outside of the Wall Street Journal in the establishment press. In a December 29, 2009 article, the aforementioned Wallison conveyed an assertion by Edward Pinto, who is certainly in a position to know, that, as far back as 1993, Fan and Fred “routinely misrepresented the mortgages they were acquiring, reporting them as prime when they had characteristics that made them clearly subprime or Alt-A.” In other words, they deceived the financial markets and the ratings agencies on a massive scale about the underlying quality ofhundreds of billions if not trillions of dollars of securitized mortgages. If Zibel isn’t aware of this, he should be. If this has anything to do with “competitive pressure,” I’d like him to explain how that’s the case. It’s also not written in stone that “the government had to take them over.” Perhaps it felt obligated because of the implicit guarantees against default (they were not explicit, despite Zibel’s claim that they were), but the legal requirement for Uncle Sam to take over Fan and Fred in troubled circumstances was not there. Zibel wants readers to believe that Fan and Fred were really just victims of a “market (that) went bust” during the final year of the Bush administration. No sir, it has become painfully apparent that they sowed the seeds of that bust by committing fraud on what may be an unprecedented scale all the way back to the early Clinton years. Taxpayers are now reaping the whirlwind. Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .

Evening News Watch: NBC Trick May Have Enabled Big 3 Nets to Avoid Going Below Combined 19 Million Last Week

Last week, Matt Robare at NewsBusters noted the fact that the Big 3 networks’ combined year-over-year audience fell by a bit more than 1 million during the second quarter. Last week’s showing appears to be to a slight pickup over the previous week, but it may have been much worse. Here, per Media Bistro, is how the the week of June 28 as reported by Nielsen compared to the week of June 21, the last reporting week of the aforementioned dismal quarter: June 21 — NBC – 7,190,000; ABC – 6,740,000; CBS – 5,230,000; Total – 19,160,000. June 28 — NBC – 7,800,000; ABC – 6,740,000; CBS – 4,970,000; Total – 19,510,000. So how did NBC attract over 600,000 additional viewers during the week of June 28, increasing its audience by over 8%? The answer, according to Media Bistro’s Kevin Allocca, is that the network probably didn’t: On Thursday and Friday, “NBC Nightly News” was coded as “Nitely News” in the Nielsen ratings (similar to last summer) and the newscast was therefore excluded from the average over those two lower-rated days heading into the holiday weekend while Brian Williams was out. ABC and CBS averages are based on all five days. Clever, eh? In his coverage of last year’s NBC similar trick during the week of June 29 — a week where the reported combined audience was 20,180,000 — Media Bistro’s Chris Ariens observed that “The practice, however, is within Nielsen’s guidelines.” Some “guidelines.” That’s like a baseball team getting away with excluding its worst two innings, or an NBA team unilaterally deciding that the second half didn’t count. Given that one of its competitors lost ground week to week while the other just stayed even, it’s reasonable to believe that NBC’s June 28 full-week performance was no better than June 21. If so, the total audience at the Big Three networks really fell below 19 million. Oh, how the formerly mighty in the statism-compliant establishment media have fallen, and continue to fall. ‘Eclipse’ Premiere: Xavier Samuel Drew Inspiration From ‘Wild Things’

Australian actor thought about the Denise Richards movie when emerging from the water as Riley. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Xavier Samuels at the “Eclipse” premiere Thursday Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images In trailers and clips, fans have already been teased with what it will look like when Riley and the army of newborn vamps emerge from the water, on their way to the final battle in “Eclipse.” Australian up-and-comer Xavier Samuel , who plays Riley, new the image would be dramatic, and he had a very interesting movie reference in mind as he got into character for that particular scene. “Well, I’m lucky it was kind of covered the first night at drama school,” he joked to MTV News at the red-carpet premiere of “Eclipse” in Los Angeles on Thursday night. “Let me say a large source of inspiration for that scene was Denise Richards in ‘Wild Things.’ ” Of course, movie buffs may point out that when Richards and Neve Campbell rise out of the pool in the 1998 movie, they’re actually referencing a scene in “Apocalypse Now,” but if it worked for Samuel, we won’t argue with him. And with “Eclipse” set to open on Wednesday (June 30), he said he now has a game plan for his next big Hollywood move. ” ‘Wild Things 5,’ ” he laughed when asked about his next project. “And hopefully that will continue on for a while.” Samuel said that there are few things in this world that would get him as hyped as the fans who had lined up for days outside Hollywood’s Nokia Theatre to catch a glimpse of their favorite “Twilight Saga” stars for the premiere . “I was really into Australian football when I was younger,” he said. “But I wasn’t writing posters or anything like that, but I can understand the degree of hysteria.” So, did he get any marriage proposal from any of the aforementioned fans? “I’ve only had one,” he revealed. “Not [married] yet, but I just thought I’d say, ‘Look let’s get to know each other. We should meet first, perhaps.’ Absolutely [I’d date a fan].” What other movie references have you seen in the “Twilight” movies? Talk about it in the comments. Robert Pattinson Defends Kristen Stewart, Slams "Nerds on Blogs"

Ouch, Robert Pattinson. Ouch . Speaking to Entertainment Weekly for its upcoming Eclipse cover story, the gorgeous actor was asked about Kristen Stewart’s comments last month, where she compared the paparazzi to rapists . While Kristen herself saw the error in her word choice and maturely apologized for it, Rob stood up for his rumored girlfriend and pointed the finger at, well… us. “That whole system of Internet journalists, where no one is called to account, is almost entirely about hate,” he said “All these people get away with doing it because they have no responsibility to anyone… there are so many little nerds behind their computers, on their little blogs.” Don’t worry, Kristen. Rob has your back. Pattinson may have a decent point overall, but this wasn’t the ideal topic to express it over. Stewart clearly over-stepped with her reference to “rape” and can often come across as ungrateful for her lot in life. But she dealt with that issue herself in the aforementioned apology and this doesn’t seem to be a battle she needed her man to fight on her behalf. The pair were seated next to one another during this interview, though, and it did lead to one of Stewart’s funniest points to date. After Rob finished his rants, she said: “See, if I said that? Crucifixion. You can say so much more than me. It’s insane…you could say, ‘I just took a s***on the Queen’s face,’ and people would be like, ‘Oh, I love him! I love him!'” Ha! She’s totally right. P.S. Rob, we prefer to be labeled as “geeks,” thank you very much!

Drake’s Appeal Is Willingness To Tell His ‘Truth,’ Sway Says

‘This documentary accomplishes that for Drake,’ the MTV News correspondent says of ‘Better Than Good Enough.’ By MTV News staff Drake in “Better Than Good Enough” Photo: MTV News & Docs He’s borne witness to the rise of hip-hop greats, from the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur to Eminem and 50 Cent. And now, MTV News correspondent Sway says Drake shares something in common with the aforementioned MCs: an affinity for the truth. In “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” the documentary airing Wednesday night (June 23), the “World Famous Wake Up Show” host said fans will get an even clearer view of the Toronto rapper’s life. “Just like 50 Cent has a certain authenticity to the truth, and the way his life was, that led him to become the person he was, Drake — on the flip side of the spectrum — has the same truth about what his life was like growing up that made him the person he was,” Sway said, comparing the seemingly opposed hip-hop stars. “Except, [Drake’s life] lacks the violence that 50 had. It’s a different kind of struggle than what 50 had, but the fact that both those artists were transparent in their truth is what makes them appealing. This documentary accomplishes that for Drake,” he added of the MTV News/ @Radical Media project. The documentary chronicles Drake’s life in the months leading up to the release of his successful debut, Thank Me Later. From performances to downtime to late-night studio sessions, Drake allowed cameras to trail him and was candid about his feelings on fame, his struggle to reconcile personal ambition with responsibility and establishing his eventual place in music history. “I just want people to walk away … just feeling a little bit more confident about Drake,” the rapper says in the documentary. “In no way do I want people to be like, ‘He’s the best. He’s the man.’ ‘Cause I really do have a desire to grow and get better. I do want people to walk away and be like, ‘OK. OK. Friday Box Office: The Kid Stays in the Picture

Sweep the leg! For the first time this summer a movie actually exceeded expectations at the box office. The Karate Kid — which tracking had opening in the highs 20s/low 30s range — grossed $19 million on Friday alone and could wind up with upwards of $52 million by Sunday night. Will Smith is so famous that even his kid can front a blockbuster. The other ’80s nostalgia piece of the weekend, The A-Team , detonated $9.5 million on Friday and should hit just under $27 million for the three days, good for second place. Is that disappointing? Slightly. But not really considering expectations were in that range. Let’s just say the plan sorta came together and leave it at that. The top-five after the jump.

Ricky Gervais to Curb Your Enthusiasm

Prepare to cover your eyes out of sheer awkwardness. In a marriage so obvious that it probably should have happened sooner, Ricky Gervais will appear with Larry David on the eighth — and New York set — season of Curb Your Enthusiasm . Of course there are no details what he’ll actually do on the show — beyond the aforementioned awkwardness — but supposedly Gervais will show up for a single episode late in the season. Pretty good, etc. [ THR /The Live Feed ]

Gary Coleman Death Photo: Released, Disturbing

As Gary Coleman lay dying, his near-lifeless body hooked up to tubes, Shannon Price posed for a photo with her ex-husband, knowing full well it would be of value. After she pulled the plug and took him off life support, very little time passed before the shocking image “leaked” and ended up sold to a celebrity gossip tabloid. We can’t think of many things more upsetting. While Price claims that she never intended for the Gary Coleman death photos to get out, that’s incredibly hard to believe, since she blatantly posed for them. It’s not like she’s given us any reason to think she’s above that, either. Instead, from the instant Gary died, Shannon Price has acted like the worst person ever. The Gary Coleman death photo aside … In somewhat sketchy fashion, she referred to him as her husband many times, even though they legally divorced in 2008 and never remarried She was borderline nonchalant when making the 911 call , and declined to drive him to the hospital because she didn’t want to be traumatized When she’s not hawking interviews in the aftermath of Coleman’s demise, she’s been feuding with the star’s family members over burial plans Follow the jump to see the photo, published on the cover of the Globe tabloid. Be forewarned, the aforementioned picture of Price and Coleman is sickening …
