Linkin Park Promise ‘Catalyst’ Video Will Be ‘Very Different’

Joe Hahn ‘likes to go for something big,’ bassist Phoenix Farrell says of LP DJ’s vision for new clip. By James Montgomery Linkin Park Photo: Rob Loud/Getty Images Linkin Park have spent much of the past year touting the overall insanity of their upcoming A Thousand Suns album (it’s a “grandiose insanity,” in case you were wondering), and that idea certainly carries over into the first single, an aching slice of synth doomery titled “The Catalyst” . It seems that, every step of the way, the band is trying very hard to move beyond their nu-metal roots. So it should come as no surprise, too, that the video for “Catalyst” is a far different animal. “[Linkin Park DJ] Joe [Hahn] directed it, and Joe likes to create things visually, likes to go for something big,” LP bassist Dave “Phoenix” Farrell told MTV News. “So the look of it is very different. There’s a lot of energy in it, and for me, that’s what makes for a good video. It adds something to the song, and that’s what makes me like this particular video even more.” Farrell wouldn’t spill any details of the video — it’ll have it debut here on August 25 on MTV.com and VH1.com — but he did hint that it would be in keeping with the artistic theme of Suns (due September 14), which means that Linkin Park fans should gear up for a whole lot of blurry, digitally-scarred WTF-ery … sort of like the cover of the album. “For this record, I think we were able to be in front of the curve for a lot of things. We were working on art, and we’ve been working on it nonstop, because we really wanted to incorporate it in everything,” Farrell said. “And in the case of the album cover, we released it in little pieces, gradually constructing it out of nothing, and fans were seeing all kinds of stuff, they saw people’s faces and everything … none of that was intentionally there.” So, will the secret of the Thousand Suns cover be revealed in “The Catalyst” video? Probably not. After all, the guys in Linkin Park aren’t even really sure what the image is supposed to be. “I don’t want to say what I think it is — I don’t know — but I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. It’s a good reference for the record itself,” Farrell said. “I would go so far as to say it’s anything you want it to be.” “The Catalyst” video premieres at midnight on August 25 (technically that’s the 26th) on MTV.com and VH1.com, and then on MTV, VH1, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Hits, MTV Tr3s and all MTV international territories (MTV, VH1 and MTV2 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on August 26). Joe Jonas Celebrates 21st Birthday Onstage

‘I hope you can fit a car on there,’ Joe jokes as brothers Kevin and Nick surprise him with cake at Hershey, Pennsylvania, show. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas (file) Photo: Tasos Katopodis/Getty Images Joe Jonas celebrated a major milestone on Sunday when he turned 21. But his brothers decided to start the celebration a few hours early on Saturday night while onstage during a Hershey, Pennsylvania show. Kevin and Nick wouldn’t let Joe get through the Hershey Stadium concert without acknowledging his big day in front of their fans. In online footage , Kevin tells Joe, “I think it’s important that we celebrate with our friends as well. So we wanna bring out a little something for you, Joe.” Just before a cake was brought out to him, Joe joked, “I hope you can fit a car on there.” “In the meantime,” Nick said to the fans, “why don’t we sing happy birthday to Joe?” As the crowd sang out to Joe, Kevin’s wife, Danielle, and a female friend carried out the birthday cake but had some problems lighting the candles. With a little assistance from the birthday boy, one candle was lit, and then Joe took a second to think about what he wanted to wish for. “That’s really good cake,” Joe told fans as he took a bite. “Thank you, guys!” So, did Joe enjoy the big surprise? It seems so. He later tweeted , “:)… Ohhh boyyy… That show was amazing!” Although there’s no word yet how he celebrated his birthday proper, when the Jonas Brothers stopped by “Good Morning America” last Friday, Joe teased that some plans were in the works. “Besides a dog, I don’t know. That’s all I kind of wanted. I don’t know [what we’re going to do to celebrate]. These guys are not telling me what they’re doing.” In the days before his big 21st, Joe tweeted about his one birthday gift demand: “I had a dream last night I got a dog for my birthday. The dog had huge puppet eyes . When I picked it up he said ‘oh hey Joe.’ ” Nick also tweeted some birthday wishes, via their dad’s Twitter page. “RT @PapaJonas Big Day! Joe’s 21st Birthday, my 25th Anniversary AND JONAS LA tonight on Disney,” he wrote. Tourmate and “Camp Rock 2” castmate (not to mention ex-girlfriend) Demi Lovato was a bit late to the party, but made time to tweet Joe a birthday wish on Monday (August 16) writing, “Ah happy late bday @joejonas!” Share your birthday wishes with Joe in the comments below! Rick Ross Talks T.I., Jadakiss, Erykah Badu Collabos

‘The time was right,’ Ross says of Tip lacing ‘Maybach Music III.’ By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Earlier this week, Erykah Badu released a video for the remix of “Window Seat” that features Rick Ross. That collaboration led to the singer appearing on Ross’ song “Maybach Music III,” which appears on his acclaimed new album Teflon Don . “She never really collaborated with a lot of artists outside of Outkast,” Ross explained. “Maybe another artist or two, [like] the Roots. It was always conscious music she was making. You know, a gritty street artist — that’s always a plus when you get to work with somebody with the flowers around them and [they’re] burning incense. And it’s positive.” Ross was a longtime admirer of Badu’s work, which made the idea of working with her intriguing. “Her music always attracted me; it was always attractive to my kind of music,” he said. “Once we collaborated with the ‘Window Seat’ remix … the lanes of communication was open, I was like, ‘Let’s do something different.’ ” The track, which was produced by the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, also features T.I. and Jadakiss. “I felt the time was right for me and T.I. [to work together],” the Bawse explained. “We had never personally collaborated with each other on a record one on one. Early on in my career, I had said [negative] things when I didn’t know him. Just us being bosses and us being leaders and us being examples, we bossed up. We both did. He came from home doing what he did. I did my thing.” But as time passed, the animosity waned, and Ross asked Tip to collaborate. “Just on a mutual respect for each other, I reached out to him. When I got that verse back, I was like, ‘He meant that.’ We had been seeing each other over a period of time, saluting each other, bumping into each other, he knew I was a fan of his. We captured that moment in time which was one of the dopest records. And that meant the most to me. I used to play that T.I. verse in my studio, like, ‘This set the tone, right here. It set the tone.’ It just felt good for the homie to lace me. I salute Tip.” Ross brought Jadakiss, a longtime friend, on “Maybach” as well. “Jada was always that New York underdog,” he said. “That next lyricist. You could be the hottest at the time, but if you slippin’, Jada is one record away. He’s a cool dude, somebody I got a mutual respect and a friendship with.” This week, Ross released a new track online, “Summer’s Mine,” where he takes aim at his competition. “Bitch I run the south/ I’m what you wanna be,” he raps. “This how you wanna live/ This what you wanna drive/ Be honest with yourself/ I’m who you idolize.” What do you think of Ross’ “Maybach Music III”? Kanye West Ropes In Nicki Minaj, John Legend, Swizz Beatz, Others for ‘Power’ Remix

‘I might have to put out 5 albums this year … My spirit is full ,’ Kanye tweeted. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Now that Kanye West is back on his grind, the LV Don appears determined to push harder than ever to produce unique music. Case in point: Over the past five days, in addition to performing at an intimate club show on Thursday, where he covered songs by Rihanna and Billy Joel and was joined by Estelle, Yeezy hit the studio to work on a remix of “Power” with an all-star cast. Given his new status as the Titan of Twitter, he, of course, tweeted about the progress of the sessions. “Scheduled studio visits 2day, Nikki [Minaj], John Legend, Mos Def, Swizz Beatz, Pusha T, Phillip Lim,” he wrote of a remix session that roped in everyone from the newlywed producer he has called one of the greatest of all time ( Beatz ), to Clipse member T and piano man Legend, who tickled the ivories for ‘Ye at Thursday night’s show. He likened the sessions to the all-star power summits of the early jazz era, writing, “remember jazz musicians used to collab and do 4 song albums or James Brown used to just keep dropping sh– back to back.” In that spirit, West added, “I might have to put out 5 albums this year … My spirit is full … My heart is open … People want new music … I can’t hold it back.” And that wasn’t all. He uploaded a photo from the studio that featured him with Beatz and Def, as well as another pal who knows a thing or two about harnessing the power: Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. “Kobe helped me finish my #POWER remix verse … Just building on the concept of #POWE… and Mos helped me find the ‘old me’ lyrically,” he explained early Sunday morning. After a “super late” night in the lab with Mos that lasted early into Sunday morning, West said he was feeling so inspired that he actually had to unplug himself before he laid down the longest verse in rap history. “I had to cut my POWER remix verse short to not over do it with the million bar verse like the 2nd verse of ‘See Me Now,’ ” he wrote. “There’s so many ways to break down the subject of power … me and Kobe went in on it… Perfect person to help out on that.” In addition to teasing a possible Justin Bieber/Raekwon collabo , throwing out some random props to M.I.A., Matt & Kim, and Fiona Apple, and taking a break to go jogging (in Lanvin gear, of course), ‘Ye ended what sounded like a sleepless weekend on a creative and emotional high. “Sometimes I can’t control my excitement,” he wrote Sunday afternoon. “So happy … so creative … in the studio … ready to create … finished ‘Power’ verse … more music.” And, in keeping with his status as the new pied piper poet of Twitter, ‘Ye — who will appear at this year’s MTV VMAs on September 12 — wrapped the creative marathon with an early morning tweet on Monday that summed up his new philosophy: “I’m just tryna keep it symmetrical.” Right. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from Tuesday (August 3) through September 12. Justin Bieber, Kanye West Tweet About Possible Collaboration

‘Ye and Bieber also chat about working with Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon. By Mawuse Ziegbe Justin Bieber Photo: Scott Legato/ FilmMagic Sunday (August 15) was an eventful day for Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Raekwon’s Twitter followers. The Louis Vuitton Don, the Biebs and the Chef chatted on the social-networking website about teaming up to record what would likely be a mind-blowing collaboration. It all began on Sunday morning when Yeezy typed that he had contracted Bieber Fever and was digging the Canadian teen’s music. “Listening to @Justin Bieber ‘Run Away love,’ ” West tweeted. “I love Sunday mornings in the crib.” About an hour later, Yeezy revealed that not only did he have the Bieber track on repeat, he shares a similar song title on his upcoming album. “But I have listened to Runaway Love about 10 times so far,” West wrote. “Ironically I got a song called Runaway on my new album too.” Rarely do the outspoken lyricist’s musings go unnoticed and soon Bieber began responding to ‘Ye’s Twitter props. “It’s not a so what moment for me. I’m 16 and a fan. I’m kinda hyped u are listening to my stuff. Thank u. Nice sunday morning,” Bieber replied. ‘Ye continued the e-love-fest and proposed that he, Bieber and Rae work on a track together. “I’m honored that you like my Music @JustinBieber!!!” West tweeted. “You gotta hear the album. Maybe we can do something together. Me, You and Raekwon.” After bringing up the idea of throwing the Chef into the mix, ‘Ye explained that Rae once jumped on one of his much-loved R&B and hip-hop collabos. “Yo [Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface] and Rae were on one of my favorite Jodeci remixes of all time,” West wrote. ‘Ye also suggested that the Staten Island MC should bring his Wu flavor to Bieber’s music. “Maybe me and Rae should hop on Runaway Love! FLEX would drop bombs!” Melding the gritty, boom-bap sounds of Raekwon with the cheery soulful pop of Justin Bieber and the genre-straddling jams of Kanye West might appear challenging. However, Bieber, who tweeted that he plays an acoustic version of ‘Ye’s 808s and Heartbreak hit, “Heartless,” said that he’s up for the task. “Me, u, and the chef 2gether on a song = EPIC,” Bieber wrote. “Might sound crazy 2 u but even having this convo is living the dream. Thanks.” Although Rae didn’t type a response to either artist, the Only Built 4 Cuban Linx MC did re-tweet Bieber’s reply. Hilary Duff, Mike Comrie Marry

The actress and her hockey player boyfriend tie the knot in California. By Mawuse Ziegbe Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie (file) Photo: Getty Images Actress, singer and entrepreneur Hilary Duff can add another title to her resume: wife. Duff and her boyfriend Mike Comrie, a hockey player for the Edmonton Oilers, married on Saturday (August 14) in California. UsMagazine.com reports the couple tied the knot at a Montecito mansion in a sunset ceremony. Duff’s mother walked the bride down the aisle and sister Haylie served as the actress’ maid of honor. Duff swapped vows in a Vera Wang dress in front of 100 guests. The actress and the athlete announced their engagement in February after Comrie popped the question during a vacation in Hawaii. “After having been together for over two years, they are very excited to share this happy news. They are thankful for all of your warm wishes,” Duff’s rep said at the time. Comrie told “Hockey Night in Canada” in October that the pair first bumped into each other at an Idaho resort. “We were all on the same plane and it was kind of, I guess, maybe a bit of a fluke,” Comrie said. “It [was] one of those things where we were all in a group … we spent the weekend all hanging out.” “[Comrie’s] a great guy. I’ve never met anyone who could say a bad word about him. He’s generous, caring, funny. We just laugh our heads off, which I need in my life,” Duff gushed to Us last year. “He’s unique. I wouldn’t want to be with someone who wasn’t unique.” Duff recently scored a Choice TV Female “Scene Stealer” Teen Choice Award for her role on the soapy CW hit, “Gossip Girl.” The actress presumably drew from her personal experience as a child star to successfully pull off the role: Duff played Olivia Burke, a screen starlet who trades in the celebrity lifestyle for a typical college experience at New York University. ‘American Idol’ Fans Want Jennifer Lopez, Shania Twain As Judges

‘Idol’ followers also name Harry Connick Jr. and Steven Tyler as good picks to judge the 10th season. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by James Lascina Jennifer Lopez Photo: WireImage “American Idol” fans are very opinionated when it comes to the judging panel. Auditions for the 10th season are in full swing, however, as the Fox hit continues to comb the country for new talent, producers still have not confirmed a final judges lineup. Fans waiting to check out the American Idols Live! Tour in Los Angeles on Friday (August 13), offered suggestions about who should dish out feedback when the next season kicks off. “Gene Simmons would have been amazing,” George Garcia told MTV News. “Howard Stern too because Howard Stern [has] that mouth.” Garcia said that Jennifer Lopez, a much-rumored addition to the “Idol” panel, could have added “flavor, but I heard she was asking for outrageous stuff.” Diane Emerson is rooting for onetime mentor Harry Connick Jr. to return to the show as a permanent judge. “When he helped them be a mentor, he helped them so much, each and every one of them,” Emerson said. “He knew what he was talking about and I think he should become a judge.” Chloe Coleman is on Team J. Lo and said, “Jennifer Lopez would be interesting.” Kayla Erath said Lopez’ star power would mean an uptick in viewers. “I think it would be cool if J. Lo’s on it because she’s really famous and a lot more people will watch if another famous person is on it.” Sarah Garman said that she’s down to have Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler join the amateur talent behemoth “to add a little rock [to] it.” “That’d be hilarious,” Garman smiled. Her pal Jill Davy added, “Yeah, I think they need some rock and roll.” The ladies also said they were up for another buzzed-about singer, Shania Twain, to take a seat at the judges’ table. Garman mentioned that Shania would bring “a little country, a little twang,” to the competition. Davy also pointed out that Twain, who appeared as a guest judge on the ninth season, already has experience. “Shania’s done it before,” said Davy. Chloe Song said that the folks behind “Idol” would probably do well with any of the big-name celebs that have been mentioned as possible additions to the show. “I think Steven Tyler, Shania Twain and J. Lo are all really well-known singers so I think they’ll have really good thoughts and opinions on the ‘American Idol’ contestants,” Song said. Amanda Slater didn’t single out one person in particular but insisted that “Idol” needs someone with the same blunt approach to giving feedback as former judge Simon Cowell. “I think it needs to be someone that can be harsh like Simon,” Slater said. “Otherwise [the show is] too nice. Simon gave the real answers. He was tough but it was needed.” Danielle Slater said that whoever joins the panel next, needs to know what he or she is talking about. “[The show needs] somebody that’s good with music [and has] a lot of experience,” Danielle said. ‘American Idol’ Contestants Want Lady Gaga, Harry Connick Jr. To Judge

Season-nine singers Lee DeWyze, Siobhan Magnus and more chat about their dream “Idol” panel for the show’s upcoming tenth season. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by James Lascina Lee DeWyze Photo: MTV News The rumor-mill has been churning non-stop about which big-name celebs will step behind the “American Idol” judges’ table for the upcoming tenth season. Jennifer Lopez is reportedly in the running, alongside Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and country diva Shania Twain. Elton John, Justin Timberlake, Paula Abdul and Usher have also turned up on “Idol” judge wish lists. One group of people that has had firsthand experience with the judges’ feedback is the “American Idol” contestants. On the Los Angeles stop of the “Idol” summer tour on Friday (August 13), the season-nine contenders spoke with MTV News about their dream judging panel. “I think Harry Connick Jr. would be really good because he was amazing [as a mentor] on the show,” said Katie Stevens. “Supposedly Elton John was talked about. I think that would be really cool too. Hey, maybe J.Lo, J.Lo’s cool.” Aaron Kelly is also on Team Connick but said that with “Idol’s” newly-lowered age minimum, contestants and fans could benefit from the perspective of an artist who has scored success early on. “I think a young judge would be a good idea. Taylor Swift or somebody that got started young,” Kelly observed. “There’s a lot of teenage fans that watch the show … so also a young judge would bring in that audience.” Spunky singer Siobhan Magnus suggested the show should incorporate celebs outside of music for the next judges’ panel. “I think the best choice, no question, would be Pee Wee Herman. I’m pushing for it. I’m advocating every chance I get to say it. I think that Pee Wee Herman should be a judge on ‘American Idol,’ ” Magnus declared. She did have some musicians in mind for the gig, who would also make the show a big adventure. “Maybe Ozzy [Osbourne]. Just [because] how fun would that be? Everyone would be like, ‘What did he just say?’ [Or] maybe someone zany like Lady Gaga who’s huge now and just so creative.” Other season-nine contestants are feeling the idea of bringing a little comedy to the competition. In addition to suggesting his fellow “Idol” contender Michael Lynche and ’90s hip-hop duo Kid ‘N Play, Andrew Garcia rattled off names like Carrot Top and Tony Danza as stars he would put on his dream judges’ table. “[Tony Danza is] a cool guy and it’d be cool to have him on the show,” Garcia reasoned. Lee DeWyze also mentioned Danza and threw in Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider as potential celebs on his ideal panel, but admitted that he didn’t wasn’t married to a particular lineup. “I don’t know. I’m just throwing random names [out there],” the “Idol” champ shrugged. “But who knows, it could be anybody.” Lynche said he would keep a connection to the original judges’ table but also switch it up with some fresh faces. “You gotta keep the dawg [Randy Jackson] because [he’s] so classic. I thought J. Lo was a good pick. I heard that she was rumored to be one of the people up for it,” Lynche said. The singer also suggested that he has the chops to dole out feedback to “Idol” hopefuls. “Why not just pick me for the last one?” he said. “Put Big Mike up there.” Casey James said he would keep the final decisions about who moves on each week to the fans. “Three random people from the crowd that were clapping really loud for me,” is who James said he would snag as judges. Didi Benami said celebs such as Bret Michaels, Tyler, Twain and Lopez would make good judges but also mentioned that star power isn’t the most important thing when it comes to picking “Idol” critics. “I don’t really have a dream panel,” said Benami. “I just want them to be good and help with the contestants.” Who would be on your dream “American Idol” judging panel? 50 Cent’s Original ‘Black Magic’ Tracks Still Exist, Lloyd Banks Says

The MC tells ‘RapFix Live’ that a finished G-Unit mixtape is also in the vaults. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lloyd Banks on RapFix Live on August 13 Photo: Jonathan Goldner/ MTV News 50 Cent has backed away from the dance music sound he originally envisioned for his album Black Magic . Although Fif may not be putting a trance or deep-house spin on his gritty street records, Lloyd Banks says that the mercurial 50 doesn’t dispose of his music — even if it’s never released. “[50’s] mind runs all day. I go to sleep about 7 a.m. from being up writing all that time, and he’s getting up at that time, thinkin’. He might come to my room three times [a] day like, ‘I got this idea,’ or ‘I got that idea,’ ” Banks said while appearing on “RapFix Live” on Friday (August 13). “He changes up a lot. [The] material never goes anywhere though.” Banks said that even though 50 stays on the move, the G-Unit boss has been working constantly on his upcoming album. “I heard a bunch of material for that project,” Banks said. “All of it [was made while] traveling and being around. He made most of it in a … studio-truck type of thing.” The “Any Girl” MC even revealed that the Unit has recorded a mixtape that’s ready to hit the streets. “We got material,” Banks said. “We got a whole ‘nother mixtape done in the studio, chillin.’ ” Banks added that when the ‘tape will see the light of day is up to 50. “Whenever he feel like he want to pull that trigger,” Banks said. 50 has been staying busy with his Hollywood hustle and, of course, keeping up his time-honored tradition of beefing with fellow hip-hop stars like Fat Joe and Shyne. However, his last two albums, Curtis and Before I Self Destruct , didn’t move the same jaw-dropping numbers as his previous efforts and the core G-Unit team has been whittled down to just Banks, Tony Yayo and 50. Banks said that the Queens mogul plans to rule the rap game once again, and when asked about the recent criticism the G-Unit honcho has endured, he revealed that 50’s response is “I’ma get ’em.” “He’ll just come out of nowhere. I be having to tell him, ‘You ain’t gotta tell me n—a, I know. I already know what’s there ’cause I hear it,’ ” said Banks. “That fire … it ain’t gonna go nowhere.” Banks insisted that the whole Unit is ready to prove themselves on their upcoming projects. “[50’s] material’s gonna be crazy, man. All I can say is just wait and see,” Banks assured fans. “What I’m doing right now, [there’s] nothing more he wants to see than that. That just gets everybody hyped up again. [Tony] Yayo will call me like, ‘Yo, it’s on!’ That’s like the energy that’s around the unit right now.” What do you think 50 Cent’s Black Magic album sounds like? Fabolous Says He’s ‘Good’ After Having Tour Van Stolen

‘It was stripped down like a Magic City dancer,’ Fab tells MTV News of recovering the car in Washington, D.C. By Shaheem Reid Fabolous Photo: MTV News Some fun-loving criminals made traveling arrangements for some of Fabolous’ entourage a little more difficult this past weekend in Washington, D.C. The Brooklyn MC had a show in the area, and after his performance he discovered his crew’s transportation had been tampered with. “That was one of the few things on the Internet that was true,” Fab confirmed to MTV News on Thursday in the Bronx. “I had shows in D.C. this weekend. One of the turtle-top vans wound up getting stolen,” he continued. “I don’t know how, even the police were mind-boggled by it because it was parked right next to the Secret Service building. They found it though. It was stripped down like a Magic City dancer. It happens. I didn’t know people really go hard and steal cars like that. I think I tweeted , like, ‘Yo, do people really still steal cars?’ I thought that was something that kinda like fell off. What are you gonna do with a car after you steal it? Joyride? But I guess you can get some parts. But a turtle-top? You’re taking a big-ass van. Hopefully, it helped somebody out in their time of need. “I was good,” Fab laughed, correcting the record about his personal mode of transportation. “Let’s not get that mistaken. I had another ride. But my boys, they were in a little jam. We figured it out, made a police report. I thought it got towed at first. But we figured it out, made a police report, came back to New York. I don’t fault D.C. for it. Your van can get stolen anywhere I guess. I always have fun in D.C. [though]. D.C. shows me a lot of love.” Fabolous’ next project is The Grieving Music, an EP inspired by his DJ Drama-hosted mixtape There Is No Competition 2: The Funeral Service. The EP is due September 6.
