Captain America: Chris Evans Confirmed & Bucky Has Been Cast

We’ve gotten some major Captain America news in the past 24 hours. While we may have already learned last week that actor Chris Evans had landed the prestigious title role in The First Avenger: Captain America , it was still sort of classified merely as a “strong rumor.” That status has now been upgraded to iron-clad fact, as Marvel has issued a press release today, which finally confirms his casting. However, that’s not even the big news. Marvel is also confirming the truth of a rumor reported late yesterday by Deadline , that Gossip Girl and Hot Tub Time Machine star, Sebastian Stan has been cast to play Cap’s legendary young sidekick, Bucky . Just a few days ago, the mere existence of Bucky in the film was still something that was up in the air. Now, we not only know he’s in it, but who will play him. Introduced in the 1941 debut issue, Cap’s young sidekick Bucky Barnes was always seen as a sort of “poor man’s Robin.” And much like Jason Todd, the second version of Robin, Bucky’s death was one of those moments in comics legendary for not only its harshness, but for Marvel’s faithfulness to the idea of keeping him dead. As the old saying went, O.B.S.D. (Only Bucky Stays Dead.) However, that venerable saying was squashed when he was revived in the comics as Winter Soldier in 2005. He would even eventually replace Steve Rogers as Captain America when he was famously killed at the climax of Civil War . How will the character of Bucky be handled in the upcoming Avengers prequel? The casting of Sebastian Stan for this character is rather interesting, and may lift the veil a bit, regarding the film’s character dynamics. Stan, at 26, is only about a year-and-a-half younger than Cap’s Chris Evans. If I were to speculate, based on what we now know, it seems that the two will likely begin the film as best-friends, when the opportunity to enter the Super Soldier program goes to Steve and possibly divides their friendship briefly. After Cap becomes infused with his new powers and abilities, he’ll probably enjoys his initial victories, but soon realizes that he still needs his old buddy at his side. So, it looks like we will see more of a situation of the two of them being friends and equals, rather than Bucky being Cap’s 15 year-old “young ward” type who was recruited to help rally youth to enlist in the military and fight the Nazis. In fact, just looking at Stan, it almost seems surprising that he wasn’t up for the role of Cap himself, based on the guys who were once in consideration . (One of which included Stan’s Gossip Girl co-star, Chace Crawford.) What do you think about the choice of Sebastian Stan as Bucky? Does it work? Should they have gone younger/older? Just In: Chris Evans is Captain America

Finally all of the rumors and speculations can be put to rest: Chris Evans is Captain America. HeatVision reports that Evans accepted Marvel’s offer from Friday. Chris Evans has donned a superhero suit before as the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four series. He also recently starred in Push and can be seen later this year as Lucas Lee in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. It’s great to see the last Avenger (besides Ant-Man) cast and Captain America filming now moving forward. It’s only 3 years until the Avengers movie but now that Marvel has their Steve Rogers that 3 years doesn’t seem so long, especially with 3 Marvel movies in between (Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America). added by: beforethetrailer

‘The Avengers’ Is ‘All About The Cast, Louis Leterrier Says

‘Clash of the Titans’ director describes his hypothetical approach if hired to helm the superhero movie. By Josh Wigler Louis Leterrier Photo: MTV News Marvel Studios has recruited an impressive assortment of filmmakers such as Jon Favreau, Kenneth Branagh and Joe Johnston, but the studio has yet to announce a director for “The Avengers,” the big-budget superhero movie set to debut in the summer of 2012. On Monday (March 22), “Clash of the Titans” director Louis Leterrier told MTV News he is on Marvel’s short list of potential directors for the film , thanks in no small part to his previous work on “The Incredible Hulk.” While his attachment is far from official, Leterrier already has several ideas about how he would tackle “The Avengers” if hired. “It all starts with the ensemble, the cast,” the director told MTV News of his hypothetical approach. “It’s all about the cast. It’s all about the characters. You have to find the way to enter the movie through the cast.” If it’s all about the cast, then Leterrier is in luck. In addition to working with big-name directors, Marvel boasts a notable group of actors, including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Edward Norton as Hulk and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Chris Evans is the reported front-runner for the role of Captain America. “With ‘Avengers,’ it would be a little different, because a lot of the cast would have been cast by different directors from other movies,” Leterrier acknowledged, “but you can still bring everybody together. That’s what we did that was great on ‘Clash of the Titans.’ For the first three weeks, we brought everybody into a room and we workshopped the movie.” While Leterrier isn’t a lock for the “Avengers” job, he has at least one Hollywood insider in his corner: Sam Worthington, the leading man in Leterrier’s “Titans.” Worthington, no stranger to comic book fare having once been connected to “The First Avenger: Captain America,” told MTV that Leterrier would bring several worthy qualities to “The Avengers.” “There’s action. He throws a camera around like no one,” said Worthington, a self-described fanboy. “He does bring people together. He’s worked with Morgan Freeman, Bob Hoskins, William Hurt, Edward Norton — he’s worked with some big boys. Plus, he’s a fan. He’s like me! We watched some trailers the other day at ShoWest, and me and him were nudging each other because we’re fans. We make movies that we would want to go and see.” For breaking comic book movie news, columns and more — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

The Smug Reign of John Krasinski Is About to Begin [Catch A Rising Star]

We’re sorry, but it’s coming. Rumor is that the shaggy Office star has the role of Captain America pretty much in the bag . It’d be “a multi-film deal,” which means Jim Halpert is about to get big . This is bad. Look, as actors go, Krasinki is mostly fine . He’s certainly better than an Ashton Kutcher or a Dane Cook. Of the current crop of shaggy-sarcastic funnymen, Krasinksi is definitely not the worst. But his whole hangdog cutie shtick has gotten unbearably tired and downright smug on The Office of late, and his equally grating work in movies like Leatherheads and It’s Complicated — mugging to the camera, oddly broad comedy strokes — have shown that his range doesn’t extend much past the whole cute guy you don’t notice until you do and then you really dooooo acting style. And though Captain America does begin as a nerdy little art student, pretty soon he’s buff and shield-wielding. We don’t see that really working with this muppetish fellow. And besides, the real problem isn’t Krasinski playing the hero in some comic movie that probably won’t be good. It’s that the series could make him a bonafide star , which means more gangly manboy to come — in sadsack modern dramas, in corn-blue romantic comedies, in paranoid urban thrillers. Krasinski is suited well for the small box, and now it seems that he could soon be foisted upon our megaplexes like a great messy-haired American Gerard Butler, an idea that sends an ironic slacker chill through our bones.
