Warrant Singer Jani Lane Dead At 47

Former hair-metal frontman was best known for hit ‘Cherry Pie.’ By Gil Kaufman Jani Lane Photo: Alexander Sibaja/ Getty Images Jani Lane, the golden-haired former lead singer of 1980s hair-metal band Warrant, was found dead on Thursday in a hotel room in Woodland Hills, California. According to The Hollywood Reporter, police found the body of Lane (born John Kennedy Oswald), 47, at a Comfort Inn, with no cause of death available at press time. Lane was best known for the Warrant hit “Cherry Pie,” which he wrote and which featured a guitar solo by Poison’s C.C. DeVille. The double entendre-filled video for the song — packed, of course, with a bevy of video vixens — was a staple of MTV programming when it was released in 1990. The singer was born in Akron, Ohio, on February 1, 1964. He began his career as a teenage drummer before moving to Florida and playing in a series of metal bands. Eventually he made the trek to Los Angeles with future Warrant drummer Steven “Sweet” Chamberlin in search of fame and a steady gig. He was recruited to join Warrant in 1986 and the band released their major-label debut, Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, in 1989, spawning the hits “Heaven” and “Down Boys.” But it was 1990’s Cherry Pie that really put them on the map, selling three million copies and making them hair-metal superstars. The title tune was written on the back of a pizza box, which can reportedly be seen on display at the Hard Rock Caf

Coldplay Announce New Album Title, Mylo Xyloto

Cryptically titled LP is due out on October 25. By Gil Kaufman Coldplay’s Chris Martin Photo: ChinaFotoPress/Getty Images After teasing fans with previews of half a dozen new songs on the road this year — including five at last weekend’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago — Coldplay have finally announced the name and release date of their anticipated fifth album. The cryptically titled Mylo Xyloto (pronounced my-lo zy-letoe) will hit stores in the U.S. on October 25. The album, which features production by Markus Dravs, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson, as well as additional compositional help from ambient-music legend Brian Eno, is the follow-up to 2008’s multiplatinum Viva La Vida. After releasing a color-splashed video for the dance-y rock tune “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall,” the band will follow with the first official single, “Paradise,” due out on September 12. Among the new songs the group played at Lollapalooza were “MX/Hurts Like Heaven,” one of their classic revved-up emotional anthems, as well as the strummy, U2-like push-pull rocker “Major Minus,” the gentle ballad “Us Against the World” and the expansive “Charlie Brown.” According to Billboard, the album will also feature the bass-heavy “Up in Flames.” Another tune they’ve played live, “Moving to Mars,” may or may not make the cut. Guitarist Jonny Buckland described the musical theme of the new record as “letting loose musically; louder drums, louder guitars, more contrast. Then we wanted to go down to the most intimate moments, then back to the biggest we’ve ever been. We wanted to contain as many interesting ideas as we could fit into 42-and-a-half minutes.” The band’s manager told Billboard that a brief arena run in the U.K. and U.S. is slated for December, with a full world tour expected to kick off in the spring. ‘Dirty Dancing’ Remake A ‘Big Challenge,’ Director Says

‘I hope we can bring something unique and original to help change the naysayers’ minds about the film,’ Kenny Ortega tells ‘The Insider.’ By Terri Schwartz Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the 1987 classic “Dirty Dancing” Photo: Getty Images Kenny Ortega has been tasked with remaking the 1987 classic “Dirty Dancing,” and he knows you aren’t happy about it. The announcement earlier this week was met with seemingly universal backlash, especially in MTV News’ comment section. Commenter lisha.16 lashed out against Hollywood’s continued dependence on remakes, while Valerie Anne Devine pointed out that “Dirty Dancing” is “not broken therefore does not require a makeover.” In an interview with “The Insider,” Ortega said he was initially in the same boat. “Saying yes to this project was a really tough decision for me, and one that I wrestled with for a long time,” said the “This Is It” director, who was a choreographer on the original “Dirty Dancing.” “I had to be won over too.” So far, there’s no script or casting ideas set, just the idea to remake the movie first made famous by Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. But “Dirty Dancing” is no stranger to reinvention. The movie inspired a successful Broadway musical as well as the 2004 box-office flop “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights.” Ortega said his first step in creating this remake is to not try to top anything the original movie did. “We have a big challenge and a long road ahead of us,” Ortega said. “All I can say is that I hope we can bring something unique and original to help change the naysayers’ minds about the film.” That starts with not trying to find a way to replace Swayze and Grey. “They’re one of a kind, and they deserve to be called that,” he said. Ortega said he has been impressed with “So You Think You Can Dance” finalist Melanie Moore’s skills and told her live on the air that she has a role waiting for her in the film if she wants it. He also said that he would love to find a role for Grey in the remake if she’d want to be part of it. As for who should play male lead Johnny Castle, MTV’s Hollywood Crush blog suggested Ryan Gosling could be a pretty good choice. Ortega is no stranger to fans rebelling against remakes of ’80s dance flicks. He was originally attached to direct the upcoming “Footloose” remake before dropping out because he didn’t like the tone Paramount wanted for their modernized take. It will be interesting to see whether Ortega’s “Dirty Dancing” also gets updated to the present day with current popular dancing or if it maintains the 1960s setting and styles that the original had. Britney Spears’ Tourmates Nervo Tease New ‘Club Records’

Aussie twins tell MTV News they haven’t strayed from dance music roots in spite of ‘amazing’ Femme Fatale Tour experience. By Akshay Bhansali Nervo Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images With Britney Spears ‘ flashy Femme Fatale Tour closing out its remaining North American dates later this month, it’s fair to say that many of Ms. Spears’ concert-going fans have gotten to know Olivia and Miriam Nervo pretty well. In fact, when Brit first announced her Femme Fatale lineup back in April, promising on her website, “Nervo will get everyone on the dancefloor,” dance music fans were ecstatic about the inclusion of the DJ/producer twins whose writing credits include a song for Spears and David Guetta and Kelly Rowland’s “When Love Takes Over.” MTV News recently caught up with the Australian sisters (and former models), and they told us that bussing across the States and sharing the stage with Nicki Minaj, Jessie and the Toy Boys, and Brit herself, has been a stellar opportunity. “We’ve definitely seen both the girls, [Britney and Nicki], and we interact with them,” Miriam, a.k.a. Mim, told us. “You are traveling to each city and you see the same people every day and it really becomes a family. So it’s been an amazing experience.” “It’s an amazing show,” Liv added. “The girls, the lineup really works well together. You’ve got Britney, who I think is looking the best she’s looked in a really long time and who really gives it her all on this tour. And then you’ve got Nicki, who definitely brings her edge to it. I’d never seen Nicki live, and I’m just so blown away. The girl can sing, rap — total respect to her!” As the Femme Fatale Tour winds down Stateside before heading to Europe, Nervo are now looking to expand the fanbase they’ve built in the U.S. But while Liv and Mim have been a part of what might be considered the mother of all pop music tours, the duo insist that they intend to remain true to their dance music and DJ roots. “When we signed the record deal, it was really important to us that we could take our DJing seriously and release club records,” Liv explained of their Astralwerks label. “Yeah, we want to be DJ artists,” Mim added. “That’s what we love so, luckily, we can release some club records alongside our Astralwerks album,” Liv said. “It just so happens that the Astralwerks single that we’re coming out with is with two major club guys: Afrojack and Steve Aoki . It’s called ‘We’re All No One.’ We love it!” While Liv and Mim do the singing on “No One,” the beats are delivered by hard-hitting EDM producer Aoki and David Guetta prot

Rebecca Black Drops ‘My Moment’ Music Video

Clip shows ‘Friday’ singer making TV appearances, walking red carpets. By Jocelyn Vena Rebecca Black in her “My Moment” music video Photo: RB Friday, Inc Have you heard that this is Rebecca Black’s moment ? Well, in case you haven’t, she’s happily declaring it in her video for her latest single, “My Moment.” The song is all about empowerment and addressing all those haters who didn’t necessarily get her last viral smash, “Friday.” The video opens with the teen singer in a recording studio putting the final touches on the cutesy song, which opens with the lyrics, “Were you the one who said that I would be nothing?/ Well, I’m about to prove you wrong/ I’m not the only one who believes in something/ My one wish is about to come true.” Scenes of her in the studio are intercut with a montage of her making TV appearances, strutting down red carpets, driving around Hollywood and greeting fans. The feel-good theme of the track continues on the chorus, with Black declaring, “This is my moment, my moment/ It’s my time, flying high, lime, mine/ Feels like my moment, my moment, I’ve waited for so long/ But now everybody knows this is my moment, my moment.” Next, Rebecca takes her fans to the makeup chair, where she’s getting all gussied up, and to dance rehearsals, which eventually become a full-on dance break as she hits the floor with “So You Think You Can Dance” finalists Robert Roldan and Kent Boyd. Then she’s in a limo in a big red dress, her name on the marquee; this time the red carpet is all hers. The song was written by Brandon “Blue” Hamilton (Justin Bieber) and Quinton Tolbert, and the production credits include Charlton Pettus. Black is also finishing up her five-track EP, which will be released in August. Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Rebecca Black

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ New Video To Be Directed By … Kreayshawn?

RHCP will film ‘The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie’ clip with up-and-coming ‘Gucci Gucci’ rapper. By James Montgomery Kreayshawn Photo: Michelle Crowe The Red Hot Chili Peppers ‘ debut album was released in 1984, a full five years before Bay Area “based goddess” Kreayshawn made her debut as a human being. Yet that’s not stopping the two sides from joining forces on RHCP’s new “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” video, which Kreay will direct. That’s according to reps for each act’s respective labels (Warner Bros. and Columbia), who confirmed the collaboration to MTV News. “Maggie” is the first single from the Chili Peppers’ much-anticipated I’m With You, their first studio album in more than five years. Details on the video are scarce, and while the idea of Kreayshawn — the rapper who recently became the subject of an intense bidding war between labels thanks to her Internet smash “Gucci Gucci” — directing a video for the Red Hot Chili Peppers might seem like a rather interesting choice for the iconic group, she’s actually been making clips for years (mostly notably for Lil B) and reportedly attended the Berkeley film school. In fact, part of the reason Kreayshawn decided to ink a deal with Columbia Records was because they agreed to let her continue to make music videos, as she told MTV News earlier this month. “Columbia was the best just because they were like, ‘We want you to do exactly what you’ve been doing,’ which is, like, I’ve been directing music videos, so they were like, ‘We want you to keep doing that,’ ” she said. “You know, I do a little graphic design, and they had me make my own logo, you know?” What do you think about Kreayshawn directing the Chili Peppers’ new video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Red Hot Chili Peppers
