Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night’ Video: Frame By Frame

Director Marc Klasfeld provides insight into the kitschy homage to ’80s teen comedies. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Katy Perry in her “Last Friday Night” video Photo: Capitol Records In Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” video , we see what happens when nerdy girl Kathy Beth Terry (Perry) gets a makeover and becomes the life of the party. Recently, director Marc Klasfeld sat down with MTV News and took us through his neon-colored tribute to ’80s teen movies, frame by frame. “The storyline is definitely ’16 Candles’ and John Hughes-influenced,” Klasfeld said. “And all those great ’80s high school movies.” The celebrity cameos come fast and don’t stop, beginning with “Glee” star Darren Criss, who drops in on Kathy’s bedroom to thank her for the “best party ever” the morning after. “Darren, he was great,” Klasfeld said. “He was in there for like an hour. He came in, nailed it, did his thing.” Criss wasn’t the only one who pumped out great work. “There’s Katy! One thing about her, she really took on this role, she dove right into it and did everything that was asked and a lot more,” he recalled. “There’s a lot of outtakes that we actually couldn’t show. She had a lot of fun with it.” “Friday” singer Rebecca Black also appeared in the video, as Kathy Beth Terry’s sort of Fairy Godmother. “Rebecca was great all the way through. She was really excited, and I think she looks great,” he said. “She looks like a Disney TV star in this, so who knows what’s next for Rebecca?” Black and Perry had to make fast friends when it came to the makeover scene. “This was a fun scene. [Rebecca and Katy] kind of first met in this scene,” he said. “We actually didn’t use wax [on Katy]. I think that was honey. She actually doesn’t have hair there to wax, but suspension of disbelief, as they say. And there’s her headgear off, and here she comes: the made-over Kathy Beth.” Once made over, Kathy is joins in on a big game of “Just Dance,” the kind of product placement Klasfeld said he tried to fit seamlessly into the clip. “It wasn’t this crass cut away to a phone or to a camera, and it kind of fit in with the theme of the video.” The video features a number of other cameos including Kenny G, Hanson and “Glee” star Kevin McHale, but perhaps none were as funny as the appearance at the end by ’80s icons, Debbie Gibson and Corey Feldman. “They were one of our one of our great cameos we had in the video, and we just roll with it here,” he said. “This was just pure ad lib.” Just when fans think the video is over, the credit roll provides a little something extra. “Obviously a lot of movies do this [credit blooper reel], but my influence for it was [1981 movie] ‘Cannonball Run’ because ‘Cannonball Run’ always had these great outtakes that went on forever,” he said. “We had so many outtakes, we could have let it go on for 14 minutes, but we had to stop at some point.” Related Videos Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’: Frame By Frame MTV News Extended Play: Katy Perry Related Photos The Evolution Of: Katy Perry Related Artists Katy Perry

Katy Perry Satisfies New York Fans’ Sweet Tooth

Pop star matches theatrics with strong vocal performance for the Nassau Coliseum stop of her California Dreams Tour. By John Mitchell Katy Perry performs in Uniondale, New York on Friday Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage UNIONDALE, New York — Teenage girls and the parents who support them turned out in droves for Katy Perry ‘s California Dreams Tour at the Nassau Coliseum on Friday night. There were plenty of “sexy boys” there too (more on them in a minute). Indeed, the pop star proved just how well she knows her audience when she asked the packed arena if there were any graduates in the house. As she listed off the possibilities (high school, college, etc.) she marveled, “We have more junior high graduates than college graduates. That’s crazy!” Following a “Wizard of Oz”-meets-Candy Land video intro, which mirrored the set design of the stage, Perry got the party started with a surefire crowd-pleaser, “Teenage Dream,” while wearing a dress that came complete with spinning pinwheels. “Welcome to the California Dreams Tour, where everything is so sweet,” she cooed to the legions of screaming fans hanging on her every word. And there were plenty of words for them to latch onto: The singer stopped to talk to the audience at length many times during her near two-hour set. But that was just one of the many charms Perry had in store. From a running gag about the woozy effects of a strange brownie she nibbled on before launching into a robust take on “Peacock” to her admission that when she is feeling low she turns to YouTube for “mama cat hugging baby cat” videos, Perry was all charm and nonstop energy. The show stuck so impressively to its storyline about Perry’s travels through Candy Land in pursuit of “the baker’s boy” that it could almost be a jukebox Broadway musical in the vein of “Rock of Ages” or “Mama Mia.” A human slot machine, an Elvis impersonator and headdress-wearing showgirls joined her onstage for “Waking Up in Vegas.” She floated across the arena on a pink cotton-candy cloud while strumming a bedazzled guitar to “Thinking of You.” But despite the theatrics, Perry was still at her best when playing with the audience. At one point she sought out the “sexy boys” in the arena, and when she found a volunteer that struck her fancy, she called him to the stage — but not before making a diva demand: “If you come on stage, you leave that T-shirt right there.” He did as she asked, and after giving her audience a few minutes to ogle the strapping young man (and not just the screaming girls; more than once, Perry gave her gay male fans a shout-out too), she rewarded him with a kiss on the cheek. When he requested more, she joked, “My husband [Russell Brand] just told me in my ear he’s gonna come out here and kick your ass.” She then launched into a slowed-down, jazzy take on “I Kissed a Girl” that quickly shifted into the party jam we all know and love. Unlike many of her dance-pop contemporaries (think Lady Gaga or Britney Spears), Perry left most of the dancing to her talented backup troupe, who were introduced individually during solos to popular candy-related songs like “Tootsie Roll” and “How Many Licks,” while she prowled the stage. But her lack of heavy choreography might have been in the best interest of the show’s biggest surprise: her voice. She sounded fantastic from start to finish. Not even the green, pink and purple laser show that accompanied “E.T.” could obscure that fact that she sounds better than ever. Her vocals were again showcased when she stripped down the pop bombast for a fun medley of covers — “The playlist for my life right now.” So what is Perry listening to? “Only Girl in the World” by “My girl Ri-Ri”; “Big Pimpin’ ” by Jay-Z, during which she played a jewel-encrusted recorder; “Whip My Hair” by Willow Smith and, since it was the final day of the work week, Rebecca Black’s “Friday.” The audience ate it up. Terrific show-opener Robyn , who had Perry’s fans mimicking her freestyle dance moves despite the thankless task of opening for one of pop’s biggest names, set the tone for the concert’s final act, a dance-heavy medley of Perry’s biggest hits (and one fantastic cover). The songstress put on her signature blue wig to rile up the audience with the one-two punch of “Hot n Cold” and a take on Whitney Houston’s classic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).” During “Dance,” Perry pulled no less than 20 fans onstage for an impromptu dance party. Before the final two fans would leave the stage, they asked for a picture and the pop star obliged, saying, “New Facebook picture!” She encored with “California Gurls,” but the show’s banner moment came at its official end with “Firework.” With every person in the arena on their feet, Perry said, “I wrote this song for anyone who ever needed a song. To help them, to lift them up.” And then she did exactly that. The Coliseum shook as the near-capacity crowd sang the ubiquitous hit along with her as pyro lit up the stage, raining down like a wall of sparklers. It was colorful, triumphant and the perfect way to end a near-perfect pop show. Have you been to a Katy Perry show recently? Share your experiences in the comments below. ‘Breaking Dawn’ Wedding Invitation: What Does It Reveal?

The actual invitation used in the movie for Edward and Bella’s wedding is revealed during the MTV Movie Awards pre-show. By Terri Schwartz “Breaking Dawn” wedding invitation Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage/ MTV It’s the event the world has been waiting for: You are hereby invited to the wedding of Isabella Marie Swan and Edward Anthony Masen Cullen. MTV got their hands on the official “Breaking Dawn” wedding invitation that was used in the movie for Bella and Edward’s nuptials. And if you caught the red-carpet pre-show during the “America’s Best Dance Crew” finale, then you’ve already seen it with your own two eyes. Outlined in lavender and with the Cullen seal in wax embedded on the envelope, MTV has the exclusive invite to the wedding of the century. “Together with their families, [Bella and Edward] request the honor of your presence at the celebration of their marriage,” the invitation reads. SEE PHOTOS OF THE WEDDING INVITATION HERE! “I think that it’s really interesting that they don’t include the parents’ names,” Kallie Matthews of Twilight Series Theories said. “That’s very traditional for most families to have father and the mother’s name and actually the parents inviting the invitees to the wedding. In this case, it kind of makes me wonder if Charlie is really upset about the wedding happening, and the Cullens then decided not to put their names on the invite out of respect.” Also of note, the wedding date has been pushed forward from when it happened in the book — our deductive math skills reveal the wedding technically took place in 2006 — and is now occurring on Saturday, August 13, 2011, at 5:00 p.m. “A lot of people had an idea of when the wedding would be, but now having this firm date, it’s going to be huge,” said Kara Hassell of Twilighters Anonymous . ” ‘Twilight’ fans screaming, you’ll hear them from your house, they’ll be everywhere. It will be a big date, there will be lots of parties, especially because the movie doesn’t come out until later this year, so people will be looking for something to celebrate.” If you feel like honoring that time frame with a visit to Forks, Washington, then you will be happy to know that the wedding is officially taking place at 420 Woodcroft Avenue. Unfortunately, based on a quick Google Maps search, that location doesn’t actually exist, but maybe Summit Entertainment will work their magic to make it happen. Definitely the coolest part of the invitation, though, is the official Cullen crest emblazoned on the wax seal on the envelope. Check your local Hot Topics to see if the Cullen crest becomes the next piece of “Twilight” merchandise that everyone starts sealing their letters with. “The seal is really cool. I really love the color and the context on the seal,” said Laura Byrne-Cristiano of Twilight Lexicon . “It’s got the Cullen crest that we first saw with the first ‘Twilight’ movie and it’s a really nice, rich color. It looks really cool. I like that a lot.” “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” hits theaters November 18, 2011. Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? Jim Carrey ‘Comes To Play’ At Movie Awards Again

He’s come as a hippie, a cult leader and a nervous star with an audible inner monologue — so what will he do on Sunday night? By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Jim Carrey at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Getty Images Jim Carrey’s appearances at the MTV Movie Awards are the stuff of legend. Who could forget the time he showed up dressed as a Jim Morrison-esque hippie when he won for Best Male Performance in 1999, drinking and smoking all night? The funnyman is back again this year, and supervising producer Jane Mun promises that this appearance will live up to Carrey’s rep for unpredictable hilarity. “Jim Carrey is the most-nominated MTV Movie Awards star,” Mun shared with MTV News. “Jim Carrey always comes to play. And he will be playing this Sunday!” The actor would only give some outlandish hints about what he’d be wearing for his latest appearance. “I’m wearing a suit that I’ve had made,” he told us. “It’s the latest in nanotechnology, so I’m able to project whatever I want on it.” Carrey and the Movie Awards go way back. He won his first prize back in 1995, Best Kiss for smooching Lauren Holly in “Dumb and Dumber.” In 2006, when he won the Generation Award , he donned a cultish white gown and was followed by dozens of people dressed as angels as he accepted his award from Will Ferrell, who called the star “brilliant” and a “talented son of a bitch” thanks to his versatility in the world of film. Carrey joked of his rank as the biggest winner of all time. “Why am I so blessed?” he asked onstage that year. “Why is my life so miraculous? Why do so many struggle with fame while I’m able to float effortlessly on the upper edges of the Hollywood status-phere? You like that word ‘status-phere’? I made it up last night. I made up a word.” When he won for Best Comedic Performance in 2009 for “Yes Man,” he “accidentally” shared his inner monologue instead of a planned speech. “I was choking in front of the world … in front of the good-looking kid from ‘Twilight.’ ” So, what exactly will Carrey be up to when he takes the stage this year? Mun teased, “He is going to be dressed to the nines with something else.” While there are many folks lined up to present at the show, Carrey is bound to be a highlight of the evening. Other attendees include Emma Stone, Generation Award winner Reese Witherspoon, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Selena Gomez, Cameron Diaz, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy, Shia LaBeouf, Patrick Dempsey and Josh Duhamel, and many more.
