Patton Oswalt: Response To Geek Column Has ‘Proven The Point’

‘Zombie Spaceship Wasteland’ author talks to MTV News about reaction to his controversial Wired article. By Rick Marshall Patton Oswalt Photo: MTV News Late last year, Patton Oswalt created quite a stir in the online world when he wrote a column for Wired calling for the annihilation of the nerd world as we know it. Just a few weeks and no small amount of controversy later, the actor/comedian says he feels vindicated by the discussion the column generated. Titled “Wake Up, Geek Culture. Time to Die,” the column was published just days before the release of Oswalt’s “Zombie Spaceship Wasteland,” a collection of essays that collectively form the newly minted author’s memoir. In the Wired piece, Oswalt lamented the mainstreaming and growing accessibility of all of the things that once defined “nerd culture.” With all manner of geekery now providing the fuel for popular culture, he pushed for readers to accelerate the burn, eventually forcing society to find new obsessions and exotica once everything else has been cataloged, ranked and quoted into oblivion. “In order to save pop culture future, we’ve got to make the present pop culture suck, at least for a little while,” he wrote. Not surprisingly, the column prompted no small amount of online debate, and when Oswalt dropped by MTV News to discuss his new book, he offered up some thoughts on the intense back-and-forth his missive created. “I feel like I said what I wanted to say but, if I might add, the fact that the Internet blew up the way it did might have partially proven the point that I had in the essay,” he told us. Along with calling for a pop-culture apocalypse, the actor also coined a brand-new term: Etewaf. It stands for “Everything That Ever Was — Available Forever,” and according to Oswalt, making everything we loved about the past available will do no more harm than good, and reduce the desire for more of the nostalgia-filled elements of our youth that made today’s “Star Wars” muscle shirts and tributes to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on “Glee” cool in the first place. Of course, whether he’s correct is the stuff of continued debate both on the Net and offline — and that’s the just the way he wants it. “I don’t want to get too deep into it, I’d rather have people try to interpret it,” he continued. “Some of the arguments against it have been really eloquent and brilliant, so I’m just glad that it inspired people way smarter than me to write stuff.” What’s your take on Oswalt’s Etewaf theory? Tell us in the comments!

The World’s Shortest Interview With Matthew Morrison

Last night, Fox hosted a party in Pasadena for the TCA Press Tour and nearly all of the Glee cast members stopped by (except for — cough, cough — Lea Michele). It was a feeding frenzy for the nation’s television journalists and when Matthew Morrison appeared at the event, like Fox-branded chum being thrown into violent waters, he was immediately swarmed by critics wielding tape recorders. Movieline braved the chaos and came out with the world’s shortest interview with Matthew Morrison ever. Enjoy, though be warned: White-rapping was discussed.

Justin Bieber Shoots His Return To ‘CSI’

Singer tweeted a photo of himself in makeup for February 17 episode. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber appears on “CSI” Photo: CBS If you were concerned that Justin Bieber snapped and got into a scrap with an overly aggressive photographer, relax, it’s just makeup. Images of Bieber with a pretty impressive shiner started zooming around the Internet on Tuesday, but the picture is just a still from the set of “CSI,” which the singer will revisit next month. Bieber, who first appeared on the show in September, tweeted the photo of his makeup-caked black eye on Tuesday along with the message “On set … where? Let’s just say I’m back to my evil ways. #badass.” According to Entertainment Weekly, after getting good notices his first time around, Bieber is set to reprise his role as troubled teen Jason McCann in an upcoming February 17 episode of the crime procedural titled “Targets of Obsession.” The show will air during February sweeps (go figure), six days after Justin’s movie debut in his 3-D biopic/concert film, “Never Say Never,” which opens in theaters on February 11. The first time around, which was Bieber’s acting debut, he portrayed a young kid whose older brother had been killed at the end of the previous season. Cops suspected that Bieber’s character took out his anger on authority by planting bombs. In his second go ’round, currently being filmed, show regular Nick (George Eads) tips Jason off that he might be in “imminent danger.” Last year, “CSI” executive producer Carol Mendelsohn told MTV News that the teen star would be returning to the show, explaining how the September episode left unanswered questions about his character. “At the end of the episode, we’re left with the question: Is Jason a good kid stuck in a bad situation or is Jason a bad kid hiding behind his cuteness?” Mendelsohn said. “You can see why Justin was such a perfect choice to play this role. … It’s an explosive story.” While fans will surely cheer his return to TV, they recently learned that Bieber will not be the subject of an episode of “Glee,” as was widely rumored. After stories began to swirl that Bieber Fever was slated to sweep McKinley High, Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of the Fox hit, cleared up the role of the teen star’s music in an upcoming episode. Murphy maintained that unlike other superstars whose repertories have received “Glee” overhauls — like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Madonna — Bieber’s current list of hits isn’t long enough to sustain an entire hour of New Directions-helmed numbers. “Those [tributes] are reserved for artists with big catalogs,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “Bieber comes up in episode 13 as a small plot point. Sam [Chord Overstreet] sings a JB song to win Quinn’s [Dianna Agron] approval.” Related Artists Justin Bieber

Seth Rogen Based His ‘Green Hornet’ Character On Paris Hilton

‘We wanted to start out with a guy who was the last guy you would ever expect to be a superhero,’ actor tells MTV News of Britt Reid. By Eric Ditzian Seth Rogen Photo: MTV News The first time we meet the adult Britt Reid — the scion of a Los Angeles media magnate — he’s gleefully trashing a hotel, one part Keith Moon-style rock star, one part reality-TV celebutant. The party boy, of course, will go on to become the superhero who gives “Green Hornet” its name. But in the beginning, Britt is simply a hard-drinking, model-humping, spoiled brat. And, as Seth Rogen explained to MTV News, he and co-writer Evan Goldberg turned to some real-life inspiration to create the character. “We kind of based him off a male Paris Hilton, as embarrassing as that is to say,” he told MTV News. “That is what we looked at — those people who are the sons or daughters of people who have accomplished great things. We probably give them a little more credit than they’ve gotten in the past and we explore why they’re such jerks and why they act out. Maybe it’s because they didn’t get the attention they wanted.” That’s certainly the case for Britt. His dad looks at his son, who’s more likely to end up in the newspaper for his antics than his professional accomplishments, as nothing short of an embarrassment. It’s just that fatherly disappointment that fuels Britt’s transformation into the Green Hornet. “We wanted to start out with a guy who was the last guy you would ever expect to be a superhero and slowly make that guy a hero instead of starting with a guy who’s already pretty morally centered, just doesn’t quite have the idea yet,” Rogen explained. And who knows? Perhaps Hilton herself might get a few ideas about a new career path. “She’s going to become a superhero,” Rogen laughed. “I hope so.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Green Hornet.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . No Justin Bieber-Centric ‘Glee’ Episode Planned

‘Those [tributes] are reserved for artists with big catalogs,’ co-creator Ryan Murphy explains. By Mawuse Ziegbe Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage Bad news for Beliebers: A Justin Bieber “Glee” tribute episode isn’t happening anytime soon. After rumors began to swirl that Bieber Fever was slated to sweep McKinley High, Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of the Fox hit cleared up the role of the teen star’s music in an upcoming episode. However, this season of “Glee” won’t be completely Bieber-free: “Bieber comes up in episode 13 as a small plot point. Sam [Chord Overstreet] sings a JB song to win Quinn’s [Dianna Agron] approval.” Murphy has recently been giving up more details about some of the storylines and smash hits set to turn up on “Glee.” Gwyneth Paltrow will return to reprise her role as feisty substitute teacher Holly Holliday for a two-episode arc that includes dating glee-club leader Will Schuester. The hit show will also take a chance on Gaga’s soon-to-be released single “Born This Way,” which will serve as inspiration for an episode airing in either March or April. “I love that that song is [an] anthem,” Murphy explained of giving the track major “Glee” love. “This show is by nature optimistic and I think a character like Karofsky could turn to booze or pills or alcohol and kill themselves or do something dark. But I also love Max and I love that character and I sorta want that character to have a happy ending. So I don’t really know what that’s going to be, but I do know we’re going to do a whole episode that’s about that song.” Are you bummed there is no Justin Bieber “Glee” episode?
