Diddy’s most productive baby factory — Kim Porter — was spotted hitting up “the club” in Los Angeles Friday night. We’re not sure about this “Sold Gold” dancer get up she was rockin’… Are You Feelin It? Poor thang. We can’t help but think of all the “Thought you told me that we won’t stop” voicemails she’s probably left in the last two decades. SMH. SplashNews
Drake, Blink-182, David Guetta, Evanescence and ‘American Idol’ alums also expected to drop new music in 2011 second half. By Gil Kaufman Lil Wayne Photo: MTV The record industry finally had some good news to report in the first half of the year thanks to some incremental positive growth as a result of strong album sales from Lady Gaga , Adele , Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj . But with six months left in 2011, the returns could bulge even further if even half of the albums left on label rosters see the light of day. Release dates have constantly shifted and some aren’t even on schedules yet, but the second half of this year promises new releases from Lil Wayne ; Kanye West and Jay-Z ; Dr. Dre; Evanescence; Joe Jonas; last year’s chart slayers, country trio Lady Antebellum; dance master David Guetta; and original “American Idol” Kelly Clarkson. Here’s a breakdown of the most anticipated albums on tap for the rest of the year (with the caveat that some release dates could and likely will change). Hip-Hop Although a release date is still one of the best-kept secrets in music, all eyes are on Watch the Throne, the hotly anticipated collabo between Kanye West and Jay-Z. We’ve seen the album cover art so far and pre-orders are being taken for what could be an early August ship date, but no official announcement has been made so far. Another record that’s been pushed around more than LeBron James in this year’s NBA finals is Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV . Weezy’s given us a preview of his latest opus with “How to Love,” which is already a hit on iTunes, and the latest due date for the fourth installment in the Carter series is August 29. Fans are also looking forward to Rick Ross’ God Forgives, I Don’t album, the major-label debut from Jay Electronica , 50 Cent’s long-gestating new effort, and another disc that’s been bubbling under for more than a year, Game’s The R.E.D. Album, which could finally hit shelves on August 23. Game has promised to have formerly estranged mentor Dr. Dre back in the pocket on that one, and speaking of the good doctor, the reclusive studio genius may finally release his near decade-in-the-making Detox disc this year. Maybe. Almost equally salivated over is Drake’s second studio effort, Take Care, which is slated to hit on October 24. Fans have already gotten a taste of what to expect from the recently released track “Marvins Room,” which followed another song that may make the cut, “Dreams Money Can Buy.” B.o.B has made it clear that he’s not packing a bunch of flashy features on the follow-up to his gold-certified debut, The Adventures of Bobby Ray. What we don’t know yet is when, exactly, it will drop. Also look for new albums from Akon and Nas . Pop/Country/R&B Lady Gaga and Britney Spears appeared to suck all of the oxygen out of the pop sphere earlier this year, but there is plenty more on the horizon, including a new album from last year’s chart champs, country trio Lady Antebellum, Own the Night ; the debuts from “American Idol” winner Scotty McCreery , runner-up Lauren Alaina and ninth-place finisher Pia Toscano around the holidays; and the first full-length from Internet sensation Greyson Chance , Hold on ‘Til the Night, on August 2. Jonas Brothers singer Joe Jonas steps out with his dance-inspired solo debut, Fast Life , in September, and Mary J. Blige gets help from Kanye, Swizz Beatz and Stargate on My Life II, The Journey Continues (also due in September). “Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert is working on his “dream” album as the follow-up to his 2009 debut, with help from such songwriting pros as Ryan Tedder, Nikka Costa and Sia. Hoping to get something in stores this year, oft-thwarted former Pussycat Dolls singer (and “X Factor” replacement judge) Nicole Scherzinger is planning to unleash her latest solo album, Killer Love, before year’s end, with assists from RedOne, Jim Jonsin, The-Dream, Ne-Yo, Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent. And it’s probably a long shot, but long-dormant reggae popsters No Doubt are nearly done with their first album in a decade, which may see the light of day before 2011 is out. Also slated for this year: Fiona Apple, former “American Idol” champs Kris Allen and Kelly Clarkson, Santigold, ex-Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland ( Here I Am , July 26) and electronic beatmeister David Guetta’s Nothing But the Beat (August 30), which features contributions from Flo Rida, Nicki Minaj, Taio Cruz, Ludacris, will.i.am, Usher, Snoop Dogg, Akon, Jennifer Hudson and Sia. Rock 2011 has been a bit light on the rock so far, but a number of artists look to correct that, including long-dormant Evanescence. The Amy Lee-led band will roar back with The Open Door on October 4, a disc Lee promises “smacks you right in the face.” Speaking of face-smacking, veteran funk-rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers have the usual collection of heavy grooves on tap for I’m With You, their Rick Rubin-produced album due out on August 30. Another lifer, Lenny Kravitz, also ends a self-imposed hiatus that day with his latest, Black and White America, and after reuniting in 2009, punk-poppers Blink-182 swear we’ll get new music from them before summer is out. We’re still not sure exactly what Coldplay’s new album is really about, but we know they’ll probably be playing some of the tunes from the still-untitled effort this summer at Lollapalooza . And that the paint-splashed video for the first single, “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall,” is packed with the kind of uplifting, positive vibes we’ve come to expect from the group. Also on tap: The Great Escape Artist, the first new album in eight years from alternative godfathers Jane’s Addiction; the first independent label effort from Wilco, The Whole Love (September 27); the solo debut of former Fall Out Boy singer Patrick Stump; another chunk of hot metal from Mastodon; an album-length collaboration between Metallica and punk icon Lou Reed; the long-anticipated third album from professional train wreck Amy Winehouse; and the first listen to fellow former FOB member Pete Wentz’s new band, Black Cards . What albums are you most looking forward to in the second half of 2011? Let us know in the comments!
‘I can be the first hip-hop artist to do Vegas every night,’ Wayne tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne may have extended his I Am Still Music Tour through the summer, but he isn’t going to stop there. “I actually plan on being one of those artists that can go on a tour when they’re like 40, like U2, Michael Jackson,” Lil Wayne told Sway during an interview after the taping of his “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged.” With his upcoming Tha Carter IV set to drop August 24, Weezy added 40 more dates, creating a second leg of his I Am Still Music run. As it stands now, the tour will conclude on September 11 in Woodlands, Texas. This past weekend, the Young Money CEO played the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, and has no plans of slowing down. “I actually plan on being one of those artists, with all the music and all the work I’m putting out, I believe that later on down the line, I can do Vegas. I can be the first hip-hop artist to do Vegas every night. That’s the plan.” Fans got a televised taste of Weezy’s live show when Birdman Jr. performed for the cameras during his “Unplugged” special, which aired on MTV 2 on Sunday. Wayne rocked with a full band and ran through proven hits like “Fireman,” “A Milli” and “Lollipop,” as well as new favorites like “Nightmares of the Bottom” and “6 Foot, 7 Foot.” It isn’t all rap either. During his live shows, Wayne dips into his rock catalog, doing songs from his gold-selling Rebirth album as well. It’s his deep and diversified well of tunes that will ensure that Wayne never goes home, unless he chooses to do so. “I plan on touring forever, actually,” he said. “Probably when I’m like 50, I might be like, ‘Let’s go, gimme some dates.’ ” Related Videos MTV2 Presents Unplugged Lil Wayne MTV News Extended Play: Lil Wayne Related Photos MTV2 Presents Unplugged Lil Wayne Related Artists Lil Wayne
Over the weekend, Big Pun aficionados hit the streets and rallied to rename the Bronx, NY intersection of 163rd Street and Rogets Place as Big Pun Place . The spot, which houses the iconic Pun memorial painted by the TATS Cru, needs some petition signatures to have a shot at becoming official, but it got us thinking about some other hip-hop artists that deserve their own streets. Here’s our top 5: Related: Big Pun Remembered 10 Years After His Death Jay-Z – No brainer, right? The only question here is which way to view the ever-versatile Brooklyn MC. While Madison Avenue, with its mixture of business and advertising, might be in play when all is said and done, we’ll suggest that Hov’s former home off of Marcy Avenue in Brooklyn would be the perfect fit. New name: Jay-Z Avenue Lil Wayne – Lil Wayne may have spent most of his life on a tour bus, but that doesn’t mean his New Orleans roots are forgotten. The Young Money leader grew up at 1800 Hollygrove in the city’s 17th Ward, and he’s surely enough of an icon to get honored for spreading unique New Orleans flavor all over the rap landscape. New name: Lil Wayne Lane RZA – In a perfect world, every member of The Wu-Tang Clan would have their own street. Yet as the group’s leader, RZA gets first pick. In his memoirs, Tao of Wu, the Clan leader wrote about growing up in Staten Island’s Stapleton Projects and we think the borough’s Targee Street has his name all over it. Also, yes, RZA did live with Ghostface Killah for awhile, but Ghostface Avenue might be a little intimidating for the Department of Transportation. New name: RZA Road Nate Dogg – In a Long Beach walking tour with Vice Magazine , Nate Dogg once talked about how his teen residence at 2022 Lime Avenue was where he really started focusing on music. “A preacher lived next door, and a killer on the other side,” he explained. Well, that sounds like the exact combination that Nate explored throughout his storied career. If anything, hip-hop’s top crooner deserves a little pavement in his name. New name: Nate Dogg Street UGK – Before linking up with Pimp C to form the gold standard of Texas hip-hop duo UGK, Bun B spent his formative years in Port Arthur, TX. Talk to locals, and it seems that any street in the town could be named after the duo, yet we’ll go with San Antonio Street — home to the biggest UGK mural and a fitting tribute to the trillest underground kings. Two Door Cinema Club and Chiddy Bang also take home big prizes, alongside performances by Sleigh Bells and Foo Fighters. By Kyle Anderson Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator performs at the 2011 Woodie Awards Photo: MTV Luminaries from all corners of the indie-rock world descended on Austin, Texas, on Wednesday night (March 16) not only to kick off the annual South by Southwest festival, but also to celebrate the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards . And though Wiz Khalifa and Two Door Cinema Club walked away with the biggest prizes of the evening, the night — and perhaps the remainder of the year — belonged to Odd Future. Foo Fighters got the festivities started on a loud note with a rugged run through their new single “Rope.” While the multiplatinum Foos aren’t technically indie, they certainly practice a lo-fi aesthetic (their entire new album, Wasting Light, was recorded on analog tape), and with their new three-guitar attack, they have become the modern-rock radio version of Neil Young and Crazy Horse (except with shorter solos and better haircuts). Once Dave Grohl and company wrapped up a headbang-worthy extended breakdown at the end of “Rope,” host Donald Glover (he of “Community” fame) took the stage to formally welcome the live audience and viewers at home to the show. “There’s something I wanted to say: Stop asking your black friends to freestyle,” he told the crowd. Still, that didn’t stop Glover from dropping some rhymes once house DJ Skrillex dropped a beat. “It turns out we all can freestyle.” Glover tossed to Skylar Grey and Yelawolf, who were charged with handing out the Best Video Woodie. In a tough category that included crossover stars Vampire Weekend and the Black Keys, Chiddy Bang grabbed the prize for their inventive clip for “Opposite of Adults.” Zoe Kravitz came out and threw to Wiz Khalifa, who spit “Roll Up” (from his forthcoming album Rolling Papers ) from the balcony of the theater surrounded by enthusiastic fans. Once Khalifa hit the stage, the gold light kicked in and the terrible towels started flying, which could only mean one thing: “Black and Yellow.” Khalifa’s pro-Pittsburgh anthem sounded like a massive pop hit — which, coincidentally, is exactly what it was. Woodies veteran Pete Wentz was up next. He gave out the Left Field Woodie to Kanye West, though not before letting the world know that he was “all ‘Free Earl,’ but had love for Tyler.” Weezy was not in Austin to accept his award, but Wentz accepted the prize on his behalf. In the middle of Wentz’s speech, he was interrupted by fellow Left Field nominee Lil B, channeling West’s drop-in on Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs. Meanwhile, Eliza Doolittle drank in the crowd and paid tribute to the late Nate Dogg before tossing to Two Door Cinema Club up on the stage. The jittery Irish trio crooned and jangled their way through their current single “What You Know,” one of the highlights on their debut album, Tourist History. Glover then introduced “My Life as Liz” star Liz Lee, who was up in the balcony to introduce the college radio station that won the College Radio Woodie; the prize went to WVUM of Miami University. Dev and Lil B were up next, onstage to hand out the Best Performing Woodie. “This award is not about who brings the most money, but about who brings the most swag to the performance!” declared Lil B. Matt & Kim apparently have more swag than any of the other nominees, because they won the big block of wood. Matt teased a stage dive from the balcony but settled for high-fiving most of the first row right after encouraging everybody to donate to the relief effort in Japan. Woodies veterans Friendly Fires then introduced Sleigh Bells, one of the most hotly anticipated performers of the evening. The duo made their television debut with the jagged “Riot Rhythm.” Clad in the denim jacket she picked out specifically for the occasion, singer Alexis Krauss shouted, swayed and cooed her way into the hearts of the crowd (though the special appearance by the marching band probably helped — it certainly added to the cacophony). “That was sick!” Glover declared before handing the stage to Chiddy Bang. Chiddy broke out a freestyle before running down the nominees for Breaking Woodie (which included Dev, Sleigh Bells, Local Natives, Wavves and Two Door Cinema Club). Based on fan voting, the winners were Two Door Cinema Club (who announced that it was their first award in America). Last year’s Best Video Woodie winners Matt & Kim took the stage again to give out the prize for Woodie of the Year. They announced that they would not be getting naked (like they did in their award-winning “Lessons Learned” clip), though they did do some slow-motion grinding. When the dust settled, Wiz Khalifa won Woodie of the Year for the crossover smash “Black and Yellow.” The Pittsburgh native seemed genuinely moved by his victory and spent most of his acceptance speech chuckling live on the microphone. But though the last award had been given out, the climax was yet to come. Comedian Aziz Ansari showed up to introduce Odd Future, who used Tyler the Creator’s “Yonkers” as a coming-out party. While the track played, a masked midget came out to impersonate Tyler before getting replaced by the real Tyler. Clad in a pink-and-blue hoodie and green ski mask, Tyler growled his way through “Sandwitches” while stalking the outer limits of the theater and violently stage-diving into the crowd. As the performance evolved, Tyler was joined by fellow MC Hodgy Beats and two furries in costumes. They were eventually dragged off the stage by security, leaving a permanent mark on the show — and on culture at large. What did you think of the Woodies? Share your reviews in the comments! Then I see these dudes that’s established making themselves look like tricks that are bent on hiring hoes just to convince them they should be wives. “I heard ‘Black & Yellow’ on the radio and I just started playing around with the words after I had seen some sh*t on TV with Amber Rose telling somebody to open her door like she was worth something. I just fell out laughing and started repeating wack and yellow, wack and yellow. A n*gga like me, as soon as I say something I feel is catchy, I immediately go to the board and record.” One of the lines is “you’re turning groupies into stars.” Who’s that directed to? “Mainly Kanye [West]. He was sportin’ his groupie like drawers. I got nothing against Kanye. He probably was unaware the whole time ’cause these hoes are professionals. She sucked the life out that n*gga and used the juice to put herself on. I ain’t even mad at Amber. The bitch obviously has game, but I can see that bitch coked out and doing porn by late 2011. She’s going from the top down in her gold-digging selection; she should’ve been f*cking rock stars and senators after ‘Ye.” We’re starting to notice you’re not really a huge fan of females in general, are you? “Ha! I love women—I just hate bitches. It ain’t that I’m not a fan, I just call sh*t as I see it. We been dogs and whatever else ya’ll wanted to call us since women picked up the mic. I never talk about women in my songs; I think women are the most beautiful things on the planet. It’s these vile, despicable bitches that use their insecurity as a weapon against men who don’t have enough game to defend themselves from malicious attacks on male common sense and their bank accounts.” Source
