Kanye West Is ‘Stepping Backwards’ For New Music, Q-Tip Says

‘He’s looking forward but reaching back, which is interesting,’ he tells XXL. By James Dinh Kanye West Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Utilizing Auto-Tune and the electro-pop trend, Kanye West took a musical departure with his last album, 808s & Heartbreak. But the rapper is heading back to his early roots with his new album, according to collaborator Q-Tip. “This album is, in a good way, going backwards,” Q-Tip told XXL magazine of the project. “He’s such an artist. He knows exactly what he’s doing. When he did [ 808s & Heartbreak ], that was such a departure from College Dropout. But now he’s stepping backwards, so this album will be more of a sonic extension of College Dropout and Graduation, but he’s doing it with a new attitude.” The Tribe Called Quest member explained that West is attempting to mix his sound of the past yet simultaneously cover new ground. “He’s looking forward but reaching back, which is interesting,” Q-Tip told the magazine. “It’s a calculated toe in yesterday’s water, if that makes any sense at all.” In July, ‘Ye spoke about the inspiration behind the yet-untitled project. “Everyone says all great art comes from pain, but I think my greatest art comes from excitement and joy,” he said. “It’s a completely different perspective about being extremely excited about stuff that is only cool to me.” The LP, which is due in stores later this fall, is set to feature additional production credits from DJ Premier, Pete Rock and No I.D. Lead single “Power” finds the rapper taking on the media, haters and everyone in between. As the project has gained momentum, West has treated fans to a slew of new tracks including “Monster,” featuring Jay-Z, Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj; “Devil in a New Dress” ; and “G.O.O.D. Friday,” featuring Common, Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Big Sean and Charlie Wilson. More than likely, West will perform his new material when he serves as the musical guest on the Bryan Cranston-hosted “Saturday Night Live” episode October 2. Who is Roger Craig? The Newest Jeopardy! Single-Day Record Holder

Move over, freakishly consistent Ken Jennings. On Jeopardy! last night, mild-mannered Roger Craig toppled Jennings’ single-day earnings record of $75,000 with $77,000 in winnings. What, what! The 33-year-old graduate student locked down the record when he knew “the inspiration for this title object in a novel and a 1957 movie actually spanned the Mae Khlung River,” was The Bridge on the River Kwai . Of course the two-day champion still has 72 more days to go before besting Jennings’ overall winning streak, but fingers crossed! After the jump watch his completely benign celebration.

Will.i.am Honored With President’s Award At BMI Urban Awards

Black Eyed Peas, Lil Wayne and Polow Da Don also receive awards at the annual event. By Jayson Rodriguez Will.I.Am at the 2010 BMI Awards Photo: David Livingston/ Getty Images LOS ANGELES — Will.i.am was the man of the hour at the 2010 BMI Urban Awards Friday night, as the Black Eyed Peas frontman was honored with the prestigious President’s Award. He also scored an award for Urban Song of the Year with the Peas’ for their hit “Boom Boom Pow,” before he and Usher brought the audience of suits out of their seats with a performance of their collabo “O.M.G.” The multiplatinum producer grew emotional during his acceptance speech for the President’s Award. He touched on the technological shift going on in the music industry, urged artists to think outside the box and shouted out his BEP bandmate Apl.De.Ap as his inspiration. Prior to the show, will.i.am told MTV News how honored he was to receive this recognition at this point in his career. “There’s a lot that I want to continue to do and learn,” he explained from the red carpet beforehand. The technology and music, I wanna take advantage of all the changes in the industry. There’s no record stores. Radio stations have tough competition because of the Internet. People listen to music more than they ever have. It’s a unique time because I can make a song, put it on my phone and send it to 5 million people in like 20 seconds. That’s dope. So to be acknowledged at this point in time with all these changes happening, it’s super, it’s dope. “And to be acknowledged when I’m just a fan of music and hungry about all those things I previously mentioned, that’s mega-fresh,” he continued. ” ‘Cause I watched people have crazy discipline to learn theory — Quincy Jones, Curtis Mayfield — that know how to read and write music, and I watch them be acknowledged and do great things. So this is like a tap on the shoulder saying, you’re going in the right direction.” Lil Wayne (Urban Songwriter of the Year), Polow Da Don (Urban Producer of the Year) and EMI Music Publishing (Urban Publisher of the Year) were among the other big winners at the event, which was held at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. It was the second year in a row Wayne took home the top songwriter award, this year for contributing to six of the year’s most performed songs, including “Every Girl,” “Forever” and “Successful.” Related Photos Performances At The 10th Annual BMI Urban Awards Related Artists Will.I.Am Lil Wayne Polow Da Don

‘My Soul To Take’ Uses 3-D ‘Subtly,’ Wes Craven Says

‘You can experience it the way you experience the rest of your life in 3-D,’ writer/director tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Wes Craven Photo: Getty Images Buzz has steadily been building around Wes Craven’s upcoming horror thriller “My Soul to Take.” The film, which opens October 8, marks the first writer/director efforts from the beloved genre director since his segment in 2006’s “Paris je t’aime.” When MTV News caught up with Craven during a brief-yet-miraculous window of downtime recently — he’s currently in the middle of shooting “Scream 4” — he revealed his unique inspiration for “My Soul to Take,” why it’s more than “Stand by Me” with a knife, and how his use of post-production 3-D conversion differs from the way in which other films have used it. MTV : It’s been a while since you’ve written and directed a film. How did that come about? Wes Craven : I guess it was just the happy circumstance of having a conversation with [executive producer] Andrew Rona, who at that time was running Rogue Pictures, and him saying “Got any ideas? I’d love to do another picture with you,” and I had just had an idea, and so I pitched him over coffee, and he gave me a green light for the script, and off we went. MTV : How and when did the inspiration for the story strike you? Craven : I know exactly when it came; I have no idea what inspired it. Sometimes I have these strange thoughts I’m almost embarrassed to say I have, but I was thinking about what it would be like to be a man — maybe it was because I was afraid I was enjoying too much happiness in my life — but I was thinking what it would be like to be a man who is leading a normal life at the time a series of serial killings taking place in the area where he and his wife live. … He discovers in his workshop a hiding place. He stumbles upon the tools of a serial killer that fit the description on TV that the police had captured in a security-camera recording, and he realizes that he is the killer and had a hidden personality. It sort of began there. MTV : It seems like the trailer does a great job of setting up the story without spoiling anything. Craven : It’s a great trailer. We were very happy. I kept saying it’s kind of “Stand by Me” with a knife. It’s not really a grisly gore-fest in any way. It’s as much a family story and coming-of-age story as anything else, but it does have murders in it and it does take place among 16-year-olds, so it does fall into that genre. But I really tried to reinvent that genre by doing something that had a humanistic story to it and kind of a psychological and even spiritual story to it, so depending on how you look at it, it’s either a story about personality or about souls. MTV : The cast is relatively unknown and young. What do you enjoy about working with younger, lesser-known actors? Craven : The truth of the matter is that, at that age, there are very few actors who are seasoned or well-known. Some of these actors had worked, or at least one had worked in Disney films. These were all of their first starring roles. I really enjoy working with young kids. They have great spirit and energy and are just kind of beautiful to watch and direct. I guess if I could have, I would have worked with really experienced actors so I wouldn’t have had to be kind of a schoolteacher too, but they gave great performances. I’m delighted with the way they delivered onscreen. MTV : When you say schoolteacher, do you mean telling them to be quiet and get to work? Craven : It’s more just teaching them the technical stuff of acting, hitting your marks, finding your light and saying things so they’re pronounced enough so people can understand what you’re saying. Most teenagers kind of mumble and say things too fast for most people to understand. It’s just the minor things like that, but it’s actually a pleasure to be helping pass on the craft a bit. … I directed Johnny Depp in his first film [“A Nightmare on Elm Street”], and I look back and say, “Wow, I’m really happy to be part of that gift to the world that he is.” MTV : Is this a standalone film, or is there potential for sequels? Craven : I would say that I certainly did not design it to be that, but it does have an element to it that actually could make it as easily a franchise as the “Scream” franchise, where you have different killers in each film. The central character, I think, would be very interesting to follow through a few more films, but it depends on how the film does. MTV : What can you say about the 3-D conversion? Craven : It was not shot in 3-D, but the studio offered to do that, and I thought it would be interesting to explore — not as the gimmicky 3-D of some films, but to use it as a natural enhancement. You can experience it the way you experience the rest of your life in 3-D. … For a narrative film, rather than spears coming at you in your face in the theater, [we used it] subtly to warp reality for a character that has schizophrenia or some of the kids when they’re going through their extreme events, breaking those forward from the screen rather than keeping them at the screen or behind the screen and yet doing them in a subtle way so the audience won’t be aware we’re doing it. We’re able to manipulate the mind in a way we weren’t able to before. I’m quite fascinated by it. We might be one of the first films to treat it that way. … It’s not a film that puts it in your face. You’ll be aware, but in general, it’s using it very, very subtly. … It’s been a very interesting education for me. From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Hayley Williams Channels Viral Video Star Antoine Dodson On ‘Bed Intruder’

Paramore singer collaborates with New Found Glory and Relient K members for ‘punk rock cover’ of the YouTube hit. By James Montgomery Hayley Williams Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Thanks a rather impassioned speech about an attempted rape in his neighborhood, Huntsville, Alabama resident Antoine Dodson has become an unwitting YouTube sensation over the past month. Footage of Dodson’s tirade, which appeared on a local newscast, has racked up millions of views, inspired a slew of remixes (one of which even cracked the Billboard Hot 100) and earned him a rather fervent fanbase … which, apparently, includes Paramore’s Hayley Williams. On Wednesday (August 25) night, a “punk-rock cover” of Dodson’s speech — featuring Williams on vocals, with assists from New Found Glory’s Jordan Pundik and Relient K’s Ethan Luck — was uploaded to YouTube . The song opens with Williams quoting Dodson’s notorious “rapist in Lincoln Park” line; she also tackles a verse later in the song. She recorded her vocals at Luck’s house in Nashville Wednesday night on a whim (“Over at @EthanLuck’s house, recording something groundbreaking,” she tweeted , later adding, “Just dropped by … to sing a couple lines for it. Too much fun.”). In keeping with that spirit, the entire project is a rather tongue-in-cheek take on both Dodson and punk rock in general, featuring over-the-top fretwork, chugging chords and a whole lot of intertwining gang vocals. Williams did not respond to MTV News’ emails about the song, but Luck described the inspiration for the tune, the recording process and his goals for the song on his official site . “With all this hype of Antoine Dodson around the Internet, a couple friends of mine and I thought it would be fun to do our own version of ‘Bed Intruder,’ ” he wrote. “Everything was recorded at my home studio while New Found Glory had a day off from tour here in Nashville. Hayley came over this evening to add the finishing touches. I hope you all enjoy it as much as we do … It was so much fun! Maybe The Gregory Brothers, who originally [remixed the speech], will get to hear our version! Or better yet, Antoine Dodson himself!” Dare to dream, dude. Related Artists Paramore

Kanye West Ropes In Nicki Minaj, John Legend, Swizz Beatz, Others for ‘Power’ Remix

‘I might have to put out 5 albums this year … My spirit is full ,’ Kanye tweeted. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Now that Kanye West is back on his grind, the LV Don appears determined to push harder than ever to produce unique music. Case in point: Over the past five days, in addition to performing at an intimate club show on Thursday, where he covered songs by Rihanna and Billy Joel and was joined by Estelle, Yeezy hit the studio to work on a remix of “Power” with an all-star cast. Given his new status as the Titan of Twitter, he, of course, tweeted about the progress of the sessions. “Scheduled studio visits 2day, Nikki [Minaj], John Legend, Mos Def, Swizz Beatz, Pusha T, Phillip Lim,” he wrote of a remix session that roped in everyone from the newlywed producer he has called one of the greatest of all time ( Beatz ), to Clipse member T and piano man Legend, who tickled the ivories for ‘Ye at Thursday night’s show. He likened the sessions to the all-star power summits of the early jazz era, writing, “remember jazz musicians used to collab and do 4 song albums or James Brown used to just keep dropping sh– back to back.” In that spirit, West added, “I might have to put out 5 albums this year … My spirit is full … My heart is open … People want new music … I can’t hold it back.” And that wasn’t all. He uploaded a photo from the studio that featured him with Beatz and Def, as well as another pal who knows a thing or two about harnessing the power: Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. “Kobe helped me finish my #POWER remix verse … Just building on the concept of #POWE… and Mos helped me find the ‘old me’ lyrically,” he explained early Sunday morning. After a “super late” night in the lab with Mos that lasted early into Sunday morning, West said he was feeling so inspired that he actually had to unplug himself before he laid down the longest verse in rap history. “I had to cut my POWER remix verse short to not over do it with the million bar verse like the 2nd verse of ‘See Me Now,’ ” he wrote. “There’s so many ways to break down the subject of power … me and Kobe went in on it… Perfect person to help out on that.” In addition to teasing a possible Justin Bieber/Raekwon collabo , throwing out some random props to M.I.A., Matt & Kim, and Fiona Apple, and taking a break to go jogging (in Lanvin gear, of course), ‘Ye ended what sounded like a sleepless weekend on a creative and emotional high. “Sometimes I can’t control my excitement,” he wrote Sunday afternoon. “So happy … so creative … in the studio … ready to create … finished ‘Power’ verse … more music.” And, in keeping with his status as the new pied piper poet of Twitter, ‘Ye — who will appear at this year’s MTV VMAs on September 12 — wrapped the creative marathon with an early morning tweet on Monday that summed up his new philosophy: “I’m just tryna keep it symmetrical.” Right. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from Tuesday (August 3) through September 12. Wyclef Jean Says Earthquake Motivated Presidential Run

‘The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years’ for leadership, ‘Clef says. By Gil Kaufman Wyclef Jean Photo: Michelly Rall/ Getty Images Although he’s not expected to officially announce his plans to run for president of Haiti until a Thursday night (August 5) appearance on “Larry King Live,” Wyclef Jean has given a number of interviews this week in the lead-up to the confirmation, explaining his motivation for seeking one of the most challenging jobs in the Western hemisphere. “If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this,” Jean told Time magazine. “The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century.” The January 12 quake, which killed more than 200,000 and left nearly 2 million homeless, flipped a switch in the rapper, who was born in Haiti and raised in Brooklyn. The devastation he saw in the days and weeks that followed as he helped on the ground in flattened capital Port-au-Prince to save lives made him realize that there is no contradiction between his artistic and political ambitions. “If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as President,” he said, “then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything.” The filing deadline for the November 28 election is Saturday (August 7) and Jean — who once recorded a tune called “If I Was President” — plans to make a splash on King’s CNN show in order to kick off his campaign with a bang. In a country where half the population of 9 million is under the age of 25, Jean’s musical pedigree will surely be a huge asset to his campaign, and his celebrity promises to keep the often-wandering eye of the international press on his country’s most urgent needs. “The suffering of the people of Haiti, the youth of Haiti — which is the majority of the population — can’t take another five years of the corruption that’s been going on for the past 200 years. This is why I’m running,” Jean told People magazine. The 37-year-old married father said he’s aware that cynics will question the motivation for his run, his lack of political experience and the reports of financial impropriety within his Y

Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Is ‘Timeless,’ Director Says

The clip, which premieres Thursday on MTV, is ‘a video portrait of Kanye as a symbol of power,’ Marco Brambilla tells MTV News. By Steven Roberts Kanye West Photo: Dominique Charriau/WireImage Kanye West’s “Power” video , which premieres Thursday at 11 p.m. on MTV, was a collaboration between the outspoken rapper and artist Marco Brambilla. Brambilla is currently working on a nine-video installation for an early 2011 video retrospective at the Santa Monica Museum in California, but it was his “Civilization” installation at New York’s Standard Hotel that first captured West’s attention . MTV News caught up with the artist Wednesday afternoon (August 4) over the phone, and he said West told him the Standard installation was similar to something he would post on his blog . “He loved the installation,” Brambilla said. “What he likes to feature on his blog — and he featured it on his blog when it first came out — it’s kind of interdisciplinary. Whether it’s photography or video or sculpture or fashion, he’s very interested in exposing the ‘best of the best’ or what appeals to him the most. He had never seen anything that complex, and the video collage technique that I developed for it was a brand-new thing.” Brambilla said West appreciated the project’s themes of sexuality and religion, along with its overall “epic” quality. While Brambilla typically shies away from collaborations, he admired the similarities in their approaches. But it wasn’t until Brambilla heard West’s yet-untitled new album that he decided to direct “Power.” “I instantly connected to the themes on the album,” Brambilla said. “The whole idea of celebrity, the idea of power, the idea of sensuality in it, there’s sexuality in it as well, and those were all kind of themes that I’ve explored in my work before. Once I heard the album, that was what clinched it, and I felt very much in tune with the message behind the music. “And then specifically with the single ‘Power,’ I’ve always wanted to do something that would visualize power, to do a portrait of what power would look like in a sort of timeless way and being able to have him framed in that portrait — essentially doing a video portrait of Kanye as a symbol of power was very consistent with my art practice and what I explore in my artwork.” Will you be tuning in Thursday night to watch Kanye’s new video?
