Green Day’s Reign On Shaky Ground In Musical March Madness

Evanescence and Paramore battle it out in the first #1 vs. #2 matchup in MMM history; Elite Eight voting ends tonight at midnight ET! By James Montgomery Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Photo: Getty Images There are still a few hours left before polls close in the Elite Eight of MTV’s Musical March Madness, and it looks like every second — and vote — is going to count. Because, as we predicted on Wednesday , we’ve got more than a few epic encounters on our hands, as the remaining eight bands slug it out for a spot in the Final Four. And, really, with matchups that include Paramore vs. Evanescence, Green Day vs. Adam Lambert and the MMM grudge match to end all MMM grudge matches (that would be Coheed and Cambria vs. Tokio Hotel ), well, we’d expect nothing less. Things have been wild, to say the very least. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! And so, with Elite Eight polls closing tonight at midnight ET, we figured we’d bring you up to date on all the back-and-forth battles. And they’re basically all back-and-forth battles at this point. Shoot, even the My Chemical Romance/Metallica tilt seems destined to come right down to the wire. So here’s where we stand with just a few precious hours left. East We thought the MCR/Metallica matchup had the potential to be a blowout, and for a while, it looked like those predictions would be correct: MMM heavyweights My Chem surged to a huge lead over road-weary Metallica, though, as the hours wore on, Hetfield and company dug deep, and have been staging a furious comeback ever since. As of this afternoon, they still trail MCR by a fairly sizable amount (something like 12,000 votes), but the gap is closing by the minute. Do they have enough left in the tank to overtake My Chem, or will Gerard and the boys make MMM history and advance to their third-straight Final Four? We’ll just have to wait and see. West There’s a huge upset brewing out West, as #11 Adam Lambert has got defending MMM champs Green Day on the ropes. Somewhat surprisingly, this matchup has seen more votes cast than any other in the Elite 8, as the Glambert Nation has shown up in full to support their man. Barring a tremendous rally, it looks like Green Day are going to have to relinquish the trophy, which, given the fact they never bothered to pick it up in the first place, should actually be quite easy. Sort of like Lambert’s dominance up to this point. East The biggest MMM rematch in years — 2010 champs Coheed and Cambria once again facing off against eternal MMM bridesmaids Tokio Hotel, in a battle wrought with historical tension — has, instead, turned into a massacre. Though fans of both bands have been lobbing accusations of cheating (as much a MMM tradition as the trophy itself, it would seem), we’ve been monitoring this one closely … and, Tokio fans, you’re seemingly home free. With hours left, Tokio are pasting Coheed (to the tune of some 440,000 votes) and seem destined to return to the Final Four. Then again, as we’ve learned in the past, you can’t count Coheed’s Children of the Fence out — but sufficed to say, they’ve got their work cut out for them if they want to help their favorite band advance. Just keep it clean, folks. Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! South The first #1 vs. #2 matchup in Musical March Madness history has most definitely lived up to the advance billing, as top-seeded Evanescence and #2 Paramore have been slugging it out since polls opened. Early on, this one was as close as double digits though, as it stands now — with nearly 2 million votes cast — it’s Ev who hold the lead ( we see you, Amy Lee! ) Does the Para-clan have one more rally left in them, or will Evanescence run the table and become the first-ever #1 seed to make the Final Four? The hour is growing late, though we suspect this one isn’t over just yet. There are just hours remaining in the Musical March Madness Elite Eight! Can you lift your favorite band to the Final Four? Or, alternately, bring them back from the brink? Get voting, time is running out! MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness tournament reaches the Elite Eight! Voting runs until midnight ET on Thursday, March 29, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it only gets more difficult from here on out. Madonna/deadmau5 Feud: MDNA Producer Weighs In

‘She has this dry sense of humor, which sometimes makes her say or do things that are a little bit shocking,’ Martin Solveig tells MTV News of Madge. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna and deadmau5 Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Earlier this week, Madonna and EDM star deadmau5 were in a war of words after a comment the Queen of Pop made at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival . For those who haven’t been following along at home, when Madonna took the stage to introduce Avicii, she asked the room, “How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” Molly is another term for the illegal drug MDMA (ecstasy). That reference angered ‘mau5, who took to his Facebook to call out Madonna for seemingly linking dance music and drug use, a persistent stereotype. Eventually, the two settled the argument when Madonna took to Twitter , explaining that she was actually referring to the song “Have You Seen Molly” by Cedric Gervais, not the drug. deadmau5 seemed fine with her clarification, and all was cool between the once-beefing twosome. When MTV News caught up with one of Madge’s MDNA producers, fellow EDM DJ Martin Solveig, he weighed in on the short-lived, yet headline-making, tiff. “She’s a lot more ironical than a lot of people think, and … she has this dry sense of humor, which sometimes makes her say or do things that are a little bit shocking, which is also the reason why everyone loves her,” he said of Madge. Solveig also showed support to ‘mau5 (real name Joel Zimmerman). “Joel probably read the whole thing a bit more first-degree and was a little bit angry, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” he continued. “And about him saying the things that he wants to say, I mean, I’m totally with him on that. No one here is promoting drug use, and maybe it was important to say this. I know Madonna enough to know that she is, like, completely at the opposite of supporting drug use, but it’s a little bit of a chitchat.” What did you make of the Madonna/’mau5 feud? Rachel Crow Talks Up ‘Amazing’ Post-‘X Factor’ Career

‘Everything just kind of happened at once,’ 14-year-old tells MTV News about new TV and recording deals. By Kara Warner Rachel Crow Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Her elimination from “X Factor” made for one of the most shocking (and tear-filled) moments of the show, and now breakout star Rachel Crow will be crying tears of joy thanks to a newly inked recording contract with music-industry powerhouse Columbia Records and a TV deal with Nickelodeon. MTV News caught up with the spunky 14-year-old on Wednesday (February 22) to get the inside scoop on her new endeavors. “Everything just kind of happened at once. It was really cool for me. I’ve never had so many things happen — it’s just amazing,” Crow said of her recent career developments, the first of which we’ll see via Nickelodeon’s new comedy “Fred: The Show.” ” ‘Fred: The Show’ is so much fun to work on. The whole crew, the whole cast, everyone is amazing. What’s really cool is on that show, you get to show both sides — singing and acting — which is right up my alley,” Crow said of her five- to six-episode stint. “I’m loving the acting so much. It’s really fun for me. I have a fun character. She’s spunky and crazy, and she wants to be a star and her name is — drum roll — her name is Starr.” With regard to the pilot the network is developing around the bubbly singer/actress, Crow said the details are still being worked out but promised it will be something we’ve never seen before. “The goal with the pilot is to reach boy and girl audiences, because that’s hard to do. We’re still deciding if it’s going to be one topic or any topic. Hopefully my [character’s] name is Rachel, I hope,” she said. “It’s going to be edgy and really funny. I want to land the moms and the dads too, so hopefully it will be a family show.” In between her work on “Fred: The Show” and her new pilot, Crow is getting ready to record her first studio album at Columbia. “I want my first album to have a lot of high notes in songs,” Crow said. “I want there to be upbeat songs and slow songs, I want it to be retro and very soulful and I want at least one of my songs to have a guy rapping in it, because that is just so cool. Maybe Eminem can rap on it?” What are you expecting from Rachel’s post-“X Factor” career? Let us know in the comments below!

LMFAO Make No Apologies In ‘Sorry For Party Rocking’ Video

RedFoo and Sky Blu throw epic house party in cartoon-like clip featuring David Hasselhoff. By Jocelyn Vena LMFAO Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images First they had us shufflin’. Then they introduced us to the wiggle. And for their latest video , for the club-thumping track “Sorry for Party Rocking,” the guys of LMFAO are throwing the ultimate cartoon-like house party. The clip, which premiered Monday night, opens with an older couple (played by LMFAO’s Sky Blu and RedFoo) arguing over the ruckus of a nearby house party, hosted by LMFAO’s very own Sky and Red. When the older gentleman makes his way over to the party to complain, he gets the door slammed in his face. Inside the party, the guys and their colorful crew are wearing their animal-print and neon-colored clothes, dancing and drinking the night away. When they refuse to shut down the party, the older man calls the police. But instead of shutting it down, they join the madness. So does everyone else: from pizza delivery guys and sexy nurses to truck drivers and David Hasselhoff (who appeared with the guys onstage during their 2011 American Music Awards performance). And, while the older man is trying to shut the party down, he finds his wife inside enjoying the festivities. Who could not be charmed by a house party thrown by Red and Sky? As the video begins to come to a close, RedFoo falls over from all the good times. When he is whisked away by an ambulance, he drops his phone, which is later picked up by someone who begins to party rock to “Anthem.” Christopher “Kid” Reid (from Kid’N’Play , who know a thing or two about house parties) arrives at the scene as the party seems to be winding down to complain about all the noise. In the final seconds, the video very quickly references the hospital scene that opens the group’s very memorable “Party Rock Anthem” video , where they fought off a zombie-like dancing epidemic. Perhaps this party had something to do with the origins of the plague in that video. Directed by Mickey Finnegan (who directed “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I Know It” as well as clips for Cee Lo Green and Soulja Boy), the whole video takes place in a world made up of cardboard cutouts and animations, making it a surreal escape. The video includes smooth dances moves from former “America’s Best Dance Crew” dance crews Quest Crew and the Beat Freaks. What do you think of LMFAO’s new video? Leave your comment below! ‘Sweet Valley High’ To Be A Musical, Diablo Cody Confirms

‘It’s going to blow people’s minds,’ screenwriter tells MTV News about the in-the-works adaptation. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Diablo Cody Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Diablo Cody explored the life of one particular “Young Adult” author in her screenplay for the Charlize Theron film. Next up, she herself is taking on the challenge of adapting a beloved young-adult franchise, “Sweet Valley High,” for the big screen. And while she’s knee-deep in work for the project, when MTV News caught up with the screenwriter at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on Thursday night in Los Angeles, she revealed one very juicy detail about the adaptation. “Oh my gosh! OK, so I am so excited about ‘Sweet Valley High.’ There’s original songs being written for it right now, which is the most exciting development. They’re amazing. They’re being written by these Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning songwriters from Broadway who are the best,” she gushed, confirming that the film will be a musical version of the novels. “Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, who wrote [the Broadway show] ‘Next to Normal’; they’re amazing and I’m sorry, I could go on and on. But I’m very excited about ‘Sweet Valley High.’ It’s going to blow people’s minds. I haven’t really had the chance to talk about this yet, so it’s exciting.” The Francine Pascal novels (which debuted in 1983) follow the lives of twin teenagers, Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, who live in Sweet Valley, California. The series is full of puppy love, teen angst and the kind of drama and comedy that keeps people tuning into the CW and ABC Family week after week. If you’ve never read the books before, Cody assures you that you can still love the movie. “It [has] a lot of familiar ’80s awesomeness for fans of the series, and if you’ve never heard of ‘Sweet Valley High’ you will want to,” she said, noting that casting plans are still to be determined. “Obviously I will be playing the twins. Old-fashioned ’60s-style split screen,” she joked. Jennifer Lopez ‘Chasing’ Role In ‘Cocaine Cowboys,’ Mark Wahlberg Confirms

Role of drug cartel ‘godmother’ Griselda Blanco is Oscar bait, actor tells ‘Sway in the Morning.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Devi Dev Mark Wahlberg Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Mark Wahlberg always has a lot on his plate, juggling projects as both an actor and producer. One film he’s been talking about for awhile now is “Cocaine Cowboys,” a feature film based on the 2006 documentary directed by Billy Corben. And when Wahlberg stopped by Sway Calloway’s “Sway in the Morning” Sirius radio show on Tuesday (January 10), he hinted at some major news. “We’re waiting on the script. It’s going to be sooner rather than later,” Wahlberg told Sway’s Shade 45 co-host, Devi Dev. “We’re going to shoot that in Miami, hopefully in the summer or the fall.” “Cocaine Cowboys” follows the rise of the cocaine trade and the subsequent crime epidemic and drug war that swept through Miami in the 1970s and ’80s. The documentary featured first-person interviews with journalists, lawyers, former smugglers and gang members, many of whom argue that the criminal operations behind the trade can be traced to one prominent figure: infamous crime family matriarch Griselda Blanco. Wahlberg, who has expressed interest in teaming up with his director buddy David O. Russell on the project, joked that Devi Dev might have a shot at playing “godmother” Griselda Blanco. But the actor/director also said the co-host would have stiff competition from a well-known actress who’s very interested in the part. “It’s one of those characters that will go down in history. Jennifer Lopez is chasing that [role] like crazy,” Wahlberg revealed. “It’s the role — if I could play Griselda, I would. That’s Academy Award [bait] right there.” Wahlberg and Devi also discussed the fact that whoever lands the Blanco role will have to forget about being pretty. Getting into character will require a transformation

Justin Bieber Invited To Get Paternity Results On ‘Maury’

‘We are actively pursuing this story,’ Maury Povich spokesperson says. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Justin Bieber will take a paternity test in two weeks to prove that he did not father a child with a fan who claims the pair had a backstage tryst. Now comes word that talk-show host Maury Povich wants to have the teen star appear on his show to share the results. “We are actively pursuing this story,” a Povich spokesperson told the Huffington Post . An additional source from the show tells the site that having Bieber participate with Povich and his talk show would be a big win for the daytime staple. “This would be a huge TV event,” Amy Rosenblum, former executive producer of “Maury,” explained. “When I brought the DNA test to TV for the first time on ‘Maury,’ I had no idea it would still be as popular today as it was then. Maury is trusted by millions of viewers, and if Maury told Justin, ‘You are not the father,’ everyone would believe it.” Bieber’s camp has been adamantly insisting that Mariah Yeater’s claims are false. “I can confirm that the team has proactively made arrangements for Justin to be tested upon his return and we’re going to hold everyone who is involved responsible,” Bieber’s spokesperson, Matthew Hiltzik, told MTV News. Bieber is currently traveling the world promoting his album Under the Mistletoe. earlier this month, steadfastly denying he even knows Yeater. “I think it’s crazy because every night after the show, I’ve gone right from the stage right to my car,” he explained. “So it’s crazy that some people want to make up some false allegations, but to set the record straight, none of it is true. Never met the woman.” His statements mirror those made by Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta, Bieber’s former tourmate , who told MTV News this week that it would be almost impossible for Bieber to make the time for a backstage encounter like the one Yeater claims took place. “It wouldn’t even be possible for her to get backstage,” he said. “The security is so crazy there, you can’t get backstage. And even if you got backstage, first of all, he leaves the show as soon as he’s offstage, which is pretty cool. He runs offstage, gets in a car and jets, because the whole city turns into chaos.” Do you think Justin should take a paternity test on “Maury”? Share your opinions in the comments below. Demi Moore Says Ashley Greene Is ‘Saucy’ In ‘LOL’

Moore also tells MTV News that the teen comedy’s ongoing release delays have been ‘a tough thing.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Ashley Greene Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Although it’s been awhile since we’ve had any updates about a release date for Miley Cyrus and Ashley Greene’s delayed teen comedy “LOL,” anticipation continues to build for the film, which will mark a departure for former Disney star Cyrus and Greene, who is best for her role as sweet-natured psychic Alice Cullen in the “Twilight Saga” series. But when MTV News recently caught up with Demi Moore, who plays Cyrus’ mom in the film, we got some scoop about her experience with the singer/actress, as well as some dish on what we can expect from Greene’s performance. “[Cyrus] is great, she did great,” Moore said during a promotional run for her upcoming financial thriller “Margin Call.” “I really loved the movie; I loved working with her and the director. They just put it on pause because they had another film they were focusing on. It’s a tough thing when you have a movie you’re looking forward to coming out,” she added of waiting on the film’s release date. With regard to Greene’s performance, Moore teased that moviegoers can expect to see a very different side of the “Breaking Dawn” star. “She’s saucy, she’s really saucy,” Moore said with a smile, which prompted her “Margin Call” co-star Simon Baker to chime in. “I love it when you say that,” Baker said. “Is she sassy too?” “Sassy and saucy,” Moore promised. “LOL” is based on the successful 2008 French film “Laughing Out Loud.” The American version is a coming-of-age story about a group of young people — led by Cyrus’ wild-child character Lola — trying to navigate high school peer pressure and romance in a tech-savvy era. The cast also includes Thomas Jane (“Hung”), Gina Gershon (“Rescue Me”), Jay Hernandez (“Takers”) and Austin Nichols (“One Tree Hill”).
