Harrison Ford’s Mustache Era, and More 1995 Revelations From the Movieline Vault

It’s been too long since we went for a stroll in Movieline’s deep, stardust-covered archives. So! Down we go to the Vault, where a whole batch of classic issues have yielded gems like Alicia Silverstone at her Clueless peak, Julianne Moore in praise of Sylvester Stallone, Paul Verhoeven’s draw to Showgirls (hint: “mostly tits”), Claire Danes’s low ebb of glamour, and billion-dollar man Steve Guttenberg keeping it real with his critics. Read on, and luxuriate in the history.

Director Lisa Cholodenko on The Kids Are All Right, Gay Porn, and That Ending

In The Kids are All Right , lesbian moms Nic and Jules (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore) and their teenage children (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson) have to withstand a lot upheaval when the kids’ feckless sperm donor (Mark Ruffalo) comes back into their lives. For director Lisa Cholodenko, making the movie was just as complicated.

Michael Musto’s Man on the Street: Lesbian vs. Predator

Fresh from braving the gyno-storm of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse , our man on the street Michael Musto further dipped his oars in the lady-filled waters of The Kids Are All Right . Michael’s pressing question this week is, in a steel cage, no-holds-barred grudge match, who makes the better lesbian, Annette Bening or Julianne Moore? It seems like Benning’s got the edge, but Moore’s not without her fans. But are there a few stereotypical sapphic trappings that both Moore and Benning lack in the movie? Click through to find out.

Nicholas Hoult to Play Beast in X-Men: First Class

Need further proof that it you want to appear in X-Men: First Class you better be a Movieline Verge alum? According to reports, Nicholas Hoult has been cast to play Beast in the Matthew Vaughn directed X-Men prequel scheduled to hit theaters next summer. Hoult — who has most recently appeared in A Single Man and Clash of the Titans — would join fellow Verge grads Alice Eve , new father Aaron Johnson and Michael Fassbender in the cast. James McAvoy is there, too, but he technically wasn’t a Verge-r , so whatever. Luke Evans , you’re on the clock. [ Deadline ]

Now Playing at Movieline: Stephanie Zacharek’s Video Review of The Kids Are All Right

Guess what, everyone? It turns out you don’t have to wait ’til Inception for the second high-quality entry in the summer-movie sweepstakes: A week before Chris-mas, here come Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo to shatter the art house in The Kids Are All Right . It’s so good . It’s like Toy Story 3 , but with middle-aged lesbians, their adopted kids and a cutie-pie sperm donor where the CGI playthings go. It’s actually even more like Inception , except we’ve seen it. God, I’m so breathless with how good this movie is. Gaspcall911. Take over for me, chief critic Stephanie Zacharek!

Josh Hutcherson: ‘Everybody Has Roles They Wanted and Didn’t Get’

What a difference a few months make. When we profiled Josh Hutcherson in The Verge last August , he was a promising young actor in two low-profile films that failed to do much business. This year, though, his career has taken off with a bang: not only was he heavily considered to play the title character in the reboot of Spider-Man , but the 17-year-old has supplanted Brendan Fraser as the star of their franchise, Journey to the Center of the Earth . And then there’s Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right : as Laser, the young son who spurs his mothers (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore) to meet the sperm donor who fathered him, Hutcherson turns in a winning performance in one of the best films of the year. Last month, I sat down with the up-and-comer to discuss how shocked he was that people found Kids to be a comedy, what exactly is going on with the troubled remake of Red Dawn , and how he feels when he loses out on a major role (in what turned out to be a prescient conversation).

The Let Me In Trailer: Chloe Moretz Sucks… Blood

Fans of the original Let the Right One In — of which there are many around the Internet — were justifiably upset when they heard that Tomas Alfredson’s beloved and moody adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel was being remade for American audiences with Matt Reeves (a.k.a. the guy who did Cloverfield ) as the director. But the international trailer for Let Me In — America likes short titles! — has arrived and it confirms two things: Reeves was very, very faithful to Alfredson’s original, and Kick-Ass star Chloe Moretz does, in fact, kick ass.
