‘Boyz N The Hood’ Stars Hailed ‘Classic Movie’ Back In 1991

MTV News looks back on our interview with the all-star cast and director as the South Central L.A. tale was hitting theaters 20 years ago. By Rob Markman Ice Cube in “Boyz N The Hood” Photo: Columbia Pictures In a 1991 interview with MTV News to promote the just-released “Boyz N the Hood,” Laurence Fishburne seemed to know what kind of impact the coming-of-age story would have. “John Singleton has made a classic movie,” the actor said. Twenty years later, fans are still singing its praises. This past Tuesday, “Boyz N the Hood” celebrated its 20-year anniversary , and on July 19, the film will be re-released in Blu-ray format. The film, starring Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut and Laurence Fishburne, is set in South Central, Los Angeles, a California neighborhood notorious for gang violence. At the center of the film is Tre Styles (Gooding Jr.), who tries to balance his father’s (Fishburne) life lessons with the harsh realities of the ‘hood in which he lived. Then there are half-brothers Doughboy (Cube) and Ricky Baker (Chestnut), two characters who couldn’t be more different. Doughboy, a stone-cold gangster, has street respect but very few prospects. His brother Ricky, however, is a young father and a star high school football player fielding sports scholarships from multiple colleges. In the end, Ricky’s bright future is brought to a dark close when he’s gunned down in an alleyway. “Well, this is the film that I initially went to film school to make,” director Singleton explained to MTV News in the same 1991 interview, days after the film hit theaters. “I had never seen films that reflected where I was coming from growing up in L.A.” “There are so many messages in the film, but if they go and take one message away, it’s to keep the love in the family. As long as the love is circulating around, it’ll be OK,” Gooding Jr. said. “It’s a new kind of perspective,” Fishburne added. Even Cube, who made his Hollywood debut in “Boyz N the Hood,” knew back then that the movie would be impactful. “I think we got a real good film. Just to show black people on the screen being people and not just images, as far as not a sports player or a hat and a gun,” he said. “You fall in love with these characters, and it’s real deep when something happens to them.” And that’s why 20 years later, we’re still watching. REVIEW: Winnie the Pooh Charms with Warmth, Whimsy For All Ages

Sweet as anything and just as slender, the new Winnie the Pooh movie features no adjustments, adjuncts, or fancy add-ons in its title. It’s not called Winnie , Pooh , Winnie the Two , or The New Winnie the Pooh Movie . It’s Winnie the Pooh to you, and in the desperate age of “re” — rejigger, reconstitute, reboot, remember to send your accountant a meat-of-the-month club membership — that means a lot.

Lady Gaga ‘Monster Ball’ Special Nabs Five Emmy Noms

Mother Monster’s HBO special will vie for honors at September 18 awards show. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images It’s time to break the meat dress out of deep storage, or perhaps polish up the space egg , because Lady Gaga has another awards show to attend. On Thursday morning (July 14), her “Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden” HBO special picked up five Primetime Emmy Award nominations, top-lined by a nod for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. In that category, Gaga will face off against the annual Kennedy Center Honors telecast and a trio of rather, uh, unique challengers: Carrie Fisher, Bette Midler and Pee-Wee Herman, each of whom earned noms for their respective HBO specials. The “Monster Ball” special also earned a nomination for Outstanding Directing (Gaga’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, picked up the nod), and three technical noms: Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special; Outstanding Lighting Design/ Lighting Direction for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special; and Outstanding Picture Editing for a Special. In each of those categories, Gaga will take on the usual spate of awards telecasts (the 83rd Academy Awards, the 53rd Grammy Awards, etc.), not to mention comedians Ricky Gervais and Louis C.K., each of whom earned nods for their comedy specials. Elsewhere, Gaga’s favorite show, “Glee,” was among the most-nominated programs, landing a nod for Outstanding Comedy Series. Stars Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer also earned nominations, as did guest stars Kristin Chenoweth, Dot-Marie Jones and Gwyneth Paltrow. The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 18, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. Will you be rooting for Gaga on Emmy night? Tell us in the comments! VIDEO: Justin Timberlake Is the Latest Friends With Benefits Star Invited to the Marine Corps. Ball

We were all there (or somewhere) when Sgt. Scott Moore invited Mila Kunis to be his date at the Marine Corps Ball. We watched uncomfortably as Kunis’s Friends With Benefits co-star Justin Timberlake cajoled her (during a live interview) into attending because it would be good for (marketing their movie) the country. Well now, a gutsy marine corporal named Kelsey De Santis has posted her own video invitation asking Timberlake to accompany her to a different November 12 event in Washington, D.C. Check it out ahead!

Johnny Depp Eying Paul Revere, Dante And More

‘Pirates’ star is reportedly lining up several new films, including ‘The Night Stalker.’ By Terri Schwartz Johnny Depp Photo: Jorge Herrera/Getty Images Though he certainly could happily retire on his “Pirates” loot, never let it be said that Johnny Depp is not one of the hardest-working men in Hollywood. This week, news broke of three new potential Depp projects in early discussions. Though he has commitments to Tim Burton’s “Dark Shadows” remake and Gore Verbinski’s “The Lone Ranger” update at the moment, and has said he would consider future installments of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise , it sounds like Depp is trying to keep himself busy for the foreseeable future. Deadline reports that two of the movies are being set up with Disney (Depp’s go-to company these days). The first is a feature film version of “The Night Stalker,” a 1970s TV horror movie and series that tells the story of tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak after he stumbles upon a series of supernatural killers. The second is an untitled Paul Revere film that Depp is working on with “Batman Forever” writers Lee and Janet Batchler. It would follow Revere during the 24-hour time period in which he made his legendary midnight ride to warn the revolutionaries that the British were coming. Depp would potentially star as the lead in both films. And earlier this week, “Miral” director Julian Schnabel let slip the other bit of Depp news during an interview with The Playlist , when he stated that the “Pirates” star had approached him about an adaptation of “In the Hand of Dante.” Depp had purchased film rights to the book by Nick Tosches several years ago and asked Schnabel to consider it as his next project. It’s not clear if Depp would star in the movie. “I’m not going to make it for a couple of years,” Schnabel said of the adaptation of the novel, which weaves the story of the 14th century poet and that of a contemporary writer caught up in the potential black market sale of Dante’s “Divine Comedy” manuscript. “We’re gonna work on writing it, developing it. We didn’t sign anything. It’s just something Johnny asked me to read, and I think it’s a great book, so maybe you should read it. It’s pretty beautiful. It’s about everything.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Related Photos The Evolution Of: Johnny Depp

‘Harry Potter’ Star Daniel Radcliffe Describes Final Film As ‘Heartbreaking’

‘It wasn’t a sense of nostalgia and emotion caused by my own personal relationship with the films, I was a wreck because of the film itself,’ actor says at NYC premiere. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe at the U.S. premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images NEW YORK — The “Harry Potter” film series celebrated its last U.S. premiere Monday night after a decade on the big screen, but leading man Daniel Radcliffe said that not all the tears he shed that night would be sad. “It’s a celebration,” the “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” star explained. “It’s 10 years of wonderful stories and storytelling, and it’s a celebration of 10 years work for us, so yeah we’re celebrating tonight, not mourning.” Radcliffe, who was “sweating like a pig in labor” on the hot July evening in NYC, will spend the next couple of weeks saying goodbye to the franchise that made him a star as he promotes the final installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” which hits theaters Friday. It will be an emotional journey for the stars and crew, as well as the fans who have been watching the movies since “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” opened in 2001, and who now have to accept that the “Potter” series has finally reached its end. Despite the fact that he has spent literally half his life in front of the camera filming the “Harry Potter” flicks, Radcliffe told MTV News on the red carpet that he still found himself emotionally affected by watching “Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” However, he seemed a bit surprised by the parts of the movie that left him in tears. “What I was impressed by was that it wasn’t a sense of nostalgia and emotion caused by my own personal relationship with the films, I was a wreck because of the film itself,” Radcliffe said. “You’ve got to have a heart of stone to not find part of it — especially Alan Rickman’s performance — heartbreaking, so yeah, I’ve done my fair share of crying already.” With “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” doing well on Broadway and his next flick, “The Woman in Black,” already wrapped, Radcliffe seems like he is trying to branch out as much as possible in his post-“Potter” life. Still, the 21-year-old actor said that he’s not willing to rule out returning to a film franchise just yet. “I think that we proved in doing ‘Potter’ that you can bring integrity and perpetual growth to a franchise. It doesn’t have to be a law of diminishing returns after the first film comes out,” Radcliffe explained. “Providing a script is good enough. I would absolutely do another, but it’s not something I’m looking for in the next couple of years, certainly.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Ashley Tisdale Ugly Face Skinny Legs of the Day

The good thing about Ashley Tisdale is that she knows she has a mutant face. She even tried to fix it with plastic surgery. She knows her team paid the Teen Choice Awards, or at least a staff of people in INDIA to vote and vote and vote again for her to win “Hottest Female Actress in a Movie” a few years ago when I personally felt the actual hot girls were robbed. See I’m a master of the internet and I even won a Ford Model VMAN Contest that they never get me my prize for cuz I have the power to manipulate votes, and it’s always obvious that I don’t desreve to win yet funny….yes I was the original ugly fat guy to win a model contest as a joke… Either way, back to Tisdale, what I was trying to get at is that in knowing she’s disgusting in the face, she manages to commit pretty hard to her body and working it out as hard as she can, cuz as she pushes 30, coupled with a scary face, it’s all she fucking has…. Here are her legs..
