REVIEW: Lars von Trier’s Melancholia Offers a Glorious Peep into the Sugar Easter Egg of Doom

Lars von Trier’s Melancholia is neither the provocation nor the yowl of anguish that his last picture, Antichrist , was. For those reasons, it’s less effective and also far less of a workout: Antichrist was the first von Trier movie I genuinely loved, after a decade’s worth of railing against the sufferdome atmosphere of pictures like Dogville , Dancer in the Dark , and even the mildly bearable Breaking the Waves . Antichrist stunned and upset me, but it also filled me with compassion toward the man who made it, a feeling I’d never imagined I could have. The gift of Antichrist — with its horrific depictions of emotional suffering, its wailing-wind subtext of “Nature is everywhere, inside you and outside, and it is not your friend” — was that von Trier had surprised me. That is a critic’s greatest pleasure — or at least it’s mine.

Your #MuppetOscars Campaign is in Full Swing — Is That a Good Thing?

It’s been roughly 13 minutes since Eddie Murphy departed as Oscar host, and already we have a strong frontrunner to replace Brett Ratner’s comeback kid: The Muppets. Supporters rallied on Twitter for their consideration, and now an official “The Muppets Should Host the 2012 Oscars” campaign has been launched on Facebook . We offered up the idea of a Muppet-emceed Oscars in our possible host roundup yesterday, but would the reality of Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Gonzo at the dais be as enchanting as we want?

So Much For #RatnerFreeOscars! AMPAS Stands by Producer: ‘It Will Not Happen Again’

I’m still waiting for anyone from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to bother replying to my request for comment about yesterday’s Brett Ratner “rehearsing is for fags” imbroglio , but AMPAS president Tom Sherak has officially weighed in on the controversy: “He knew it was wrong and he issued that response as quickly as any human being ever has. The bottom line is, this won’t and can’t happen again. It will not happen again.” So much for the #RatnerFreeOscars ; it was nice to imagine while it lasted.

Muppets Song/Dance Sequence: Can Jason Segel Sing and Dance?

Of course The Muppets begins with a happy-clappy street symphony that looks like an outtake from Bjork’s “It’s Oh So Quiet.” It’s The Muppets , dammit! Perkiness on tap, puppetry on parade. Here, in this opening scene from the new movie, Jason Segel and his Muppet brother Walter don matching suits and sing about lovin’ life . Because they do.

Watch Kermit and Miss Piggy Out-Act WWE Stars In Awkward Muppets Throwdown

Following in Hugh Jackman’s Real Steel -shilling footsteps , the Muppets headed over to the WWE’ s Monday Night Raw last night to promote their upcoming movie. Only instead of providing six minutes worth of awkward, forced film promotion , the fuzzy characters brought their own brand of innocence and (what appears to be) some of their own writing to the ring. Surprisingly, Muppets meet Monday Night Raw almost worked…when the inanimate Jim Henson gang wasn’t out-acting WWE’ s regulars.

Muppets Coming to WWE, Naturally

After the success of Hugh Jackman’s WWE cameo last month , Disney has partnered with the wrestling juggernaut to bring the Muppets to tonight’s live Halloween episode from Atlanta. “I can only imagine what will trend this week with the Muppets guest starring, especially when the audience sees what the Muppets are going to do,” said a WWE executive. Anything short of Miss Piggy busting a folding chair over Vince McMahon’s head will be a failure. Any other dream scenarios? [ Variety ]

‘The Muppets’ Teaser – It’s Not Easy Being Green

http://www.youtube.com/v/DUUcOmgYEhY

Continued here:

[1] Between the “Green with Envy” [2] and “The Fuzzy Pack” [3] teasers, Disney’s obviously been having a lot of fun with their marketing of the upcoming The Muppets movie. A just-released trailer continues that trend with an adorable and timely Green Lantern parody. I wasn’t expecting to see the Muppets take on Hal Jordan, but in retrospect, all that “green” makes it a totally obvious combination,… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : /Film Discovery Date : 16/06/2011 17:22 Number of articles : 5

See The Chillingly Creepy New Muppets Poster

There are a few unassailable essential guidelines to film: the villain is always bad, the girl is always pretty, and you should never EVER see the Muppets’ feet when they walk. But in the new poster for Jason Segel’s The Muppets we’re treated to the unearthly spectacle of the Muppet gang perambulating on their own. Segel has sworn up and down his movie would have traditional, CGI -free puppetry, but this makes them look like they’re hanging out with the crappy CGI singer from Jabba’s palace . Click ahead to gawk at the horrific spectacle.
