OpenFeint Wasn’t Briefed On Apple’s Game Center Reveal, But Expected It

The developers of the many existing social game networks on iPhone and iPod Touch got a surprise during Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0 unveiling yesterday: Apple’s entering their territory. Apple announced Game Center, a cross-platform, cross-game service not unlike Xbox Live and PlayStation Network that incorporates achievements, leaderboards, matchmaking — services that companies like ngmoco with Plus+ and Aurora Feint with OpenFent have been pushing themselves for months. Apple is secretive about its reveals, even to its developers. OpenFeint found out about Apple’s Game Center plans, effectively destroying the usefulness of many like services, with the rest of us. “We were not aware of the [Apple Game Center] announcement but, like many in our space, we’ve been anticipating it for quite some time,” said OpenFeint VP of marketing and developer relations Eros Resmini to me over e-mail yesterday. “We view it as a validation of what we’ve been working so hard to support: a fantastic mobile gaming experience.” Both OpenFeint and ngmoco have announced plans to move from attempting to become the standardized social gaming network across Apple devices to supplying developers with robust tools to better deliver virtual goods and microtransactions in their games, a new field for iPhone games. “Things change quickly in a rapidly moving space like mobile gaming,” said Resmini. “We’re used to it. If you look at the gaming ecosystem as a whole it’s clear that there are multiple ways to participate. Running a social graph tied to a network like OpenFeint is just one of them. Plugging into a social graph like we do with OpenFeint X, our hosted solution for running Facebook style games on mobile devices, is another one.” Despite the change of focus, Resmini isn’t worried about the future of OpenFeint. “We have more ideas than you can imagine,” he promised. Game Center won’t launch until sometime this summer, however, when iPhone OS 4.0 is scheduled for release. It won’t hit iPad until later in the fall for unknown reasons. In the interim, Resmini promised it would continue to work with developers on supporting OpenFeint and transitioning to the future. “We will continue to work with our developers to ensure that OpenFeint plays well with the new Apple ecosystem,” concluded Resmini. “We’ll also continue to focus on our premium services of OpenFeint X and hosted Multiplayer. Much more to come!” Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me . You can also follow me on Twitter . Aurora Feint – IpodTouch – Apple – iPhone – OpenFeint

Introducing Game Space, Apple’s Social Gaming Network

There are a variety of iPhone services linking various games to one another in an Xbox Live or PlayStation Network-like interface with linked friends, achievements, etc. Apple has thrown a wrench into those plans, however, with their own social gaming network, entitled Game Space. Game Space was unveiled this morning as part of Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0 event. The social network includes everything you’d expect and want from a cross-game network, based on other network successes: achievements, matchmaking, friends lists and leaderboards. iPhone OS 4.0 is scheduled to launch sometime this summer. This could be huge for games. But what happens to existing networks like plus? Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me . You can also follow me on Twitter . Kellie Pickler Is Rooting For Ellen DeGeneres On ‘American Idol’

‘I’m sure she’s doing great,’ the ‘Idol’ alum says of the show’s newest judge. By Jocelyn Vena Kellie Pickler Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — This season, Ellen DeGeneres joined “American Idol” as the fourth judge, replacing Paula Abdul. And while she’s still getting her footing on the show alongside veteran “Idol” judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson, and even Kara DioGuardi in her second season, former “American Idol” contestant and CMT Awards nominee Kellie Pickler is rooting for DeGeneres as the show’s newest star. “I’ve not seen the show, but I love Ellen,” Pickler gushed to MTV News on Monday night on the Dressed to Kilt red carpet , where she strutted her stuff on the runway alongside Gerard Butler, Joan Jett and Sean Connery. “She’s like my favorite person in the world,” Pickler said. “I’m sure she’s doing great.” Why hasn’t Pickler been watching the show that kick-started her career? Well, asked that question a year ago at the same event, Pickler chalked it up to a hectic touring schedule . “I have not been able to watch it religiously, ’cause I’m on the road a lot,” she explained. “So I don’t really get to follow any television show, but I do love the show.” At last year’s event, Pickler took time out to give some advice to the “Idol” hopefuls, pointers that seem just as useful for this year’s competition. “I think it’s all about having a good time, and as long as you’re enjoying yourself, success is defined by happiness,” she said. “So just have fun and enjoy it, and pick songs that you love and just have a good time.” What do you think of Ellen DeGeneres’ judging skills so far this season? Tell us in the comments! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Carson Daly On NBC’s Shake-Ups, Life After MTV and Reinventing Late Night

Carson Daly is a rarity among late-night hosts. The Santa Monica native broke into the afterhours landscape after a successful career in music, not comedy, and has spent the past eight years at NBC slowly breaking free from the traditional talk show format. When ConanGate threatened the 1:30 A.M. time slot that he had peacefully occupied since 2002, Daly stayed respectfully quiet about his network (even as his peers took swings at him ), instead submerging himself into a new Last Call format. Without a desk, a tie or an audience, Daly has finally found a documentary style for his show that fits — and allows him to shine a spotlight on the bands he loves (and covers during on his KAMP -FM morning radio show), take viewers on field trips (recently, to see a house that Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner was flipping) or expose his audience to stream-of-consciousness lessons from interesting figures like David Lynch. The persevering Daly phoned Movieline to discuss why he holds no ill will against NBC or his early-morning time slot, his fondest memories of MTV and the one shocking story that Matthew McConaughey never would have told in front of a studio audience.

On Location with Harmonix and the Rock Band Network

Harmonix and EA certainly hit a pop-culture nerve with Rock Band, and the latest bit of proof has been the incredible response the Rock Band Network has seen since its launch last month. X-Play’s Abbie Heppe sat down with Harmonix’s John Drake to find out more about how Rock Band Network is fairing post-launch. “We’re nearing 200 songs right now in just under a month, which is pretty crazy. We catching up quickly to the Rock Band regular DLC releases in terms of the amount of content. And you know, we are really proud of how well things are selling, how passionate the community is, and how different arists – both big and small – are all in the same store kicking around.” For more on Rock Band Network, and what Jimi Hendrix fans can expect in the downloadable content department, check out the following video: Watch Larger Version | Watch HD Version Rock Band Network – Rock Band – Harmonix Music Systems – Jimi Hendrix – Harmonix

X-Play: Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands Preview

Ubisoft is taking its acclaimed Prince of Persia series back to its Sands of Time roots with Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands , while introducing some major gameplay changes along the way. X-Play spoke with producer Michael McIntyre who explained that one of the biggest new additions fans can expect is the revamped combat system. “I think what will mostly be new is things like the combat’s going to be up to 40 or 50 enemies at one time. The combat is going to feel very different, I think, from previous Prince of Persia’s. Like, you’ve got this many enemies, so the prince had to have abilities in order to suit fighting overwhelming odds. So it’s a combat system that has a lot of action and flow to it.” For more on what else is up the prince’s sandy sleeve, check out the video sitting neatly below this sentence: Watch Larger Version | Watch HD Version And for more insight into the game, be sure to check out our Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands hands-on preview . Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West Coming To PSN In April

In addition to giving everyone around the G4 offices a little taste of Scandinavian despair via various types of disturbing candy, developer Fatshark really showed us a great time when they stopped by a few months back to show off their downloadable shooter Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West . And while it was announced a couple weeks ago that the game would be hitting the PC (on Steam, $14.99) April 8, the status of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions has been a mystery. Well, Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund recently told Joystiq that the multiplayer western will hit PlayStation Network in late April, and Xbox Live Arcade sometime thereafter. Fatshark has said it plans to support the game with post-launch downloadable content, and I don’t think they’d release DLC unless all versions of the game are out, so chances are the XBLA version can’t be that far off. The game is a blast, so the more channels it’s available on, the better. Source: Joystiq Lead & Gold: Gangs of the Wild West – Fatshark – PlayStation Network – Xbox Live Arcade – PlayStation 3
