Old Person Replaces Sick Person as Corrupt Person Steps Aside [Congress]

Nancy Pelosi has selected Rep. Sandy Levin (D-Mich) to “temporarily” replace Charlie Rangel as Chairman of the Ways and Means committee, while Rangel’s under investigation for being incredibly corrupt. Sorry, crazy Pete Stark . The guy who was supposed to be next-in-line was crazy California Congressman Pete Stark, who is very old and who has been suffering from a mysterious illness lately that he won’t tell anyone about. Stark is actually kind of awesome— he is the only avowed atheist in Congress and he’s a founding member of the Progressive caucus and generally we love the guy—but the head of a committee as important as Ways and Means should not be missing a quarter of all floor votes because this weird sickness that he won’t tell anyone about. One of the big problems with congressional Democrats is their fanatical devotion to the seniority system, which is how you end up with dudes like Max Baucus in charge of the Senate Finance Committee and Kent Conrad in charge of the Budget Committee. The Democrats should be thrilled to have those gentlemen in their caucus—but committee chairmanships should actually go to people who actually do toe the party line, which is not such a bad thing if your party line is generally full of good ideas. Let your “moderate” members from conservative states and districts take their symbolic votes against things, but do not let them chair powerful committees, you idiots. Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer are generally much better at this sort of thing than Harry Reid and Dick Durbin. But while Sander Levin is a better choice than Pete Stark, as he is not suffering from a mysterious illness, he is also still 78 years old. He is the older brother of Senator Carl Levin, in fact. Seniority is just another of the incredibly stupid things about our way of governing ourselves that the Founders invented because God told them to.

Molly Malaney & Jason Mesnick: The Wedding Photos

Not even a torrential rainstorm could ruin the joy of Jason Mesnick and Molly Malaney as they became the first couple from The Bachelor to wed last weekend. Trista and Ryan Sutter, who got married after meeting on The Bachelorette, were among the many guests from the ABC franchise on hand for the nuptials. Dark rain clouds and thunder converged on the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes just moments before the beautiful bride was to walk down the aisle. But when Molly Malaney arrived in her custom-made Monique Lhuillier gown to meet Jason Mesnick, her bright smile couldn’t be dampened by any rain. “It was the most incredible day,” she says , having married the perfect man of her dreams at long last “Our wedding was a moment of complete happiness.” Will Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi be the next couple from The Bachelor to walk down the aisle? Many people don’t think so, but don’t count them out. In any event, we couldn’t be happier for Jason and Molly. Dude took a lot of crap for dumping Melissa Rycroft on live TV, but it all worked out in the end. Sunday, we posted some photos taken from afar. Now here are some more pictures from the event, with the bride and groom (and their love) in focus … [Photo Credits: OK! Magazine]

Rapper J-Kwon Missing, Label Says

‘If anyone has seen J-Kwon or has access to him, please let him know,’ label says in statement. By Shaheem Reid J-Kwon Photo: Vince Bucci/Getty Images St. Louis native, J-Kwon , who made a huge splash in 2004 with the hit “Tipsy,” has been missing for almost a month, his label says. Gracie Production released a statement Tuesday night asking for help finding the MC. “J-Kwon is a big part of the Gracie family, and we are obviously increasingly worried and want to make sure he is OK,” Gracie Productions CEO/President Tony Bucher said in the statement. “We’ve already received thousands of e-mails from fans and supporters who are worried about J-Kwon, and we want everyone to know how much we appreciate the love and support. If anyone has seen J-Kwon or has access to him, please let him know we are worried about him, and to please let us know everything is ok.” Bucher and Gracie productions have also gone as far as setting up a Twitter page @WhereIsJKwon so fans can write with any info they may have. According to a rep for Gracie Productions, Kwon was working on a self titled album to be released on March 23. Last year, via the indie, the 24-year-old rapper put out the albums Hood Hop 2 and Hood Hop 2.5. J-Kwon’s biggest project was the original Hood Hop, which came out in 2004. Powered by the party anthem “Tipsy,” the then 17 year-old gained national exposure and even performed on “Saturday Night Live.” “I’m 17, so I can’t get into the club,” he explained to MTV News in 2004 about the controversial song. “I used to stand outside and see people so tipsy, so drunk, they basically did like a two-step away from the club. I took all that and was like, ‘OK, what does every teen think?’ When I say, ‘Teen drinking is very bad, but I got a fake ID though,’ people think I’m actually promoting drinking to teens. Nah. When I say, ‘Everybody in the club getting tipsy,’ I mean we ain’t drinking but everybody else is. That’s what we see, not what we do. A lot of critics come at me about this. If I was promoting teen drinking, believe me, I would’ve sold the song for an ad.” Kwon had a hard knock life to begin with. He was kicked out of the house at age 12 and became homeless. In 2003, he auditioned for LA Reid and Jermaine Dupri, who were at the Arista at the time. “When I went in for the deal I was like, ‘What if they don’t sign me? Forget them. If they don’t sign me, I’mma keep rolling.’ That’s how I approach every situation,” he told MTV News. “So I’m rapping for LA and at the end of the verse, my line was something like, ‘You don’t like it, LA, bite me,’ and I turned around and mooned him, straight up.” Hood Hop was the only J-Kwon album released under the So So Def imprint before the rapper and the label parted ways years later. Six Other Beverage-Based Political Parties That Should Exist [Listicle]

Have you heard about this Coffee Party? It’s basically a Facebook page , but has been somehow featured in the Times and the Post . The party stands for “cooperation in government.” Whatever! Here are six other beverage-based parties that should exist. The Long Island Iced Tea Party Slogan: “Throw off the shackles of the Federal government… but chill out first, K?” Key Issues: fighting taxes in an affable manner; genially advancing Obama conspiracy theories; abolishing the government… and having fun while doing it! Mission Statement: Like the Tea Party, the Iced Tea Party is born from a mixture of populist anger, xenophobia and anti-government sentiment. Unlike the Tea Party, these angry white people want to enjoy their time raging against the Feds. Weekly meetings are organized in local TGI Fridays, where Long Island Iced Tea party members gather round oversized margaritas and take turns at an Obama pinata in the special party room. The Monster Energy Drink Party Slogan: “Go America! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!” Key Issues: Energy; Transportation; Communications; Go! Go! Go! Mission Statement: Many Americans complain that our hyperconnected, hypermediated world is drowning our ability to think critically in a flood of information. These Americans’ brains are not sufficiently augmented with the correct mixture of caffeine, sugar, anti-oxidants and bull hormones. Through improvements in infrastructure and investments in high technology, The Monster Energy Drink Party secure our right not only to browse the Internet on an airplane, but to shoot, edit and upload your latest video blog entry while piloting a personal jet-pack. Weekly meetings held remotely, as many Monster Energy Drink Party members will be trapped at the bottom a manhole they fell into while texting and walking at the same time. The Chocolate Milk Party Slogan: “Chocolate and milk are better together” Key Issues: Race-relations; affirmative action; the achievement gap; prejudice Mission Statement: Like a gay-straight alliance except between black and white people! Together, this bi-racial mob will sweep the country, striking down racism of all types and fostering improved race relations via distributing Sapphire books to whites and Mad Men box sets to blacks. Meetings will be held weekly over a beer on the White House’s South Lawn. Asians, Latinos and “others” welcome. The Whiskey Party Slogan: “Our Country is Fucked up—You should be too.” Key Issues: Legalized gambling; legalized prostitution; legalized marijuana; legalized everything; abolishing the speed limit. Mission Statement: With so much of America gone to shit, we need a strong voice supporting the right of citizens to drink/fuck/smoke their pain away. Rising like a great cloud of hash smoke to blanket the land, the Whiskey Party will be found wherever a laid-off steelworker is slumped over his seventh beer in a bar; wherever a divorcee chokes her loneliness in a massive bong hit; wherever a man trades a woman $40 in food stamps to step on his back in stilettos; the Whiskey Party will be there. The Rubbing Alcohol Party Slogan: “The Whiskey Party is a bunch of rich snobs.” Key Issues: Same as the Whiskey Party, but a lot gnarlier. Mission Statement: BLAAAAAARRGGGHHH The Cherry Coke Party Slogan: “Why the hell doesn’t every store in America carry Cherry Coke?” Key Issues: Ensuring the security and efficiency of America’s Cherry Coke supply Mission Statement: Cherry Coke is the most underrated soft drink. We must pass a constitutional amendment which requires every store and restaurant in the land that carries Coke products to carry Cherry Coke as well. Seriously, America, when are you going to realize this is a civil rights issue?

Kim Kardashian Helps New Home Sales

It pays to have large breasts, a sex tape and an endorsement deal for an unhealthy weight loss supplement . Multiple sources report that Kim Kardashian has just purchased a $4.8 million mansion in Beverly Hills. With her yearly income, boosted by her new fragrance (as pictured below), it’s safe to assume Kim didn’t need to use any unstable adjustable-rate mortgages on that residence. As long as she keeps posing on the red carpet, therefore, we doubt she’ll fall victim to foreclosure, as so many citizens have in this market. Reggie Bush will soon move into the 4,000 square-foot pad house, which should only fuel engagement rumors between the pair. We wish Kim and Reggie the very best as they take this step in their relationship. It sounds like the only thing bigger than the new home is the Kardashians’ need for attention.

Tracy Young: Dating Kim Zolciak!

Big Papa who?!? After having been romantically linked to that a dude with that nickname for most of her life on The Real Housewives of Atlanta , it’s now been revealed that Kim Zolciak is dating a woman. Her name is Tracy Young. “Tracy broke up with her longtime girlfriend to be with Kim,” an insider told Us Weekly . “Since they’ve been together, Tracy lost a lot of weight and got really skinny for Kim. They seem to be beyond happy with each other.” Zolciak appeared publicly for the first time with her script-mandated lover with Young at the Blacks’ Annual Gala in Miami Beach on Saturday. The latter, a DJ, spun a remix of Zolciak’s single, “Tardy for the Party,” while Kim was overheard saying: “We’re really happy!” Simon van Kempen, a star on The Real Housewives of New York City , must have gotten an early look at the script for his Bravo counterpart recently. He’s on record as saying Zolciak’s sexuality will be a major storyline in 2010. “The rumor is that Kim Zolciak will come out this season,” Simon said.

Pelosi says they’ve got the votes

After last week's fun-to-watch but little-accomplishing bipartisan health care summit, it seems the Democrats are just going to move forward without the GOP. The Administration is apparently in favor of having the House pass the Senate version of the bill – which would not require going back to face the possibility of a filibuster. And Nancy Pelosi says she's got the votes in the House to do it. The Republicans have demanded that the Democrats just scrap the whole thing and start over. That was after multiple entreaties from the Obama Administration to find compromise. So, the Dems will go it alone – despite the danger it poses for some of their embattled Congressional colleagues in the upcoming midterm elections. From the Washington Post: “As Democrats fanned out on television to bolster their party's prospects for passing health-care legislation, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said it will require “courage” from members of her party. “Why are we here? We're not here just to self-perpetuate our service in Congress,” she said on ABC's “This Week.” “We're here to do the job for the American people; to get them results that give them not only health security but economic security, because the health issue is an economic issue for America's families.” Link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/28/AR2010022803243…. Tony Blair "depressed" in aftermath of Iraq War

Tony Blair descended into such a deep depression after the Iraq war that he told Gordon Brown and John Prescott he would quit No 10 the following summer – only to renege on the pledge within months, a new book by the Observer's Andrew Rawnsley reveals. The former prime minister's physical and mental decline was so profound that he confided to friends that he “spaced out” several times during Prime Minister's Questions and often woke up in the middle of the night with sweat trickling down the back of his neck. Rawnsley's explosive account is in The End of the Party, which is published on Monday , extracts from which appear in tomorrow's Observer. It lays bare, for the first time, how Blair was haunted and tormented by the deepening chaos and bloodshed in Iraq at the same time as being worn down by the constant psychological warfare being waged by Brown, his next-door neighbour in Downing Street, who was increasingly desperate to take his job. While Blair's gift for presentation helped him hide his depression from the public and most of his staff, his private turmoil was so severe that he decided there was nothing for it but to hand over to Brown midway through his second term. Rawnsley is the first journalist to detail how Blair, in those darkest days, made clear at a dinner with both Brown and Prescott in November 2003, and later in a telephone call to Prescott in spring 2004, that he would step down. http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/feb/27/andrew-rawnsley-tony-blair-iraq added by: jeffissleeping
