Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: A Track-By-Track Guide

Check out an in-depth examination of Yeezy’s new masterwork. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/ Getty Images Kanye West’s new album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , is a return to form of sorts for the mercurial star on the most basic of levels — as a producer and an MC — following a departure with his last project, 2008’s 808s & Heartbreak , a soul-baring effort soaked in personal pain and filtered through AutoTune. With My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , the Chicago artist injects who he once was — a hyperactive musician, moody celebrity and gifted rapper — with the imprints of who he has become after his seclusion and re-emergence following the infamous Taylor Swift incident: an unwavering talent tarnished by controversy but resurgent in his refusal to be defined by anything other than himself. The set, Kanye’s fifth studio album, is an arrogant, remorseful, refreshing probe of perhaps the most complicated figure in pop culture today. The fact that West is the one examining himself makes it all the more brilliant and transparent. Here, MTV News delivers song-by-song crib notes to ‘Ye’s deep dive into his psyche. 1. “Dark Fantasy” On the leadoff number, West reasserts the lyrical acumen he displayed on his first three albums but doesn’t surrender the demonstrative narrative he uncorked on 808s & Heartbreak . Over the robust production of No I.D., Mike Dean and the RZA, which includes a driving organ, tickling keys and feathery choir, West bridges the storyline from his 2009 VMAs incident to his resilient return. And like that, he’s off. Illuminating Rhymes: “The plan was to drink until the pain over, but what’s worse the pain or the hangover?” 2. “Gorgeous” (featuring Kid Cudi and Raekwon) Yeezy is as boastful as he’s ever been on “Gorgeous,” but while his lyrics are razor sharp, the production here is softer, resulting in a melodic finger wag to his naysayers rather than searing jabs. Illuminating Rhymes: “But this pimp is at the top of Mount Olympus/ Ready for the world’s games/ This is my Olympics/ We make ’em say ‘ho’ cause the game is so pimpish/ Choke a ‘South Park’ writer with a fish stick.” 3. “Power” The track that started ‘Ye’s comeback is as stirring months later here as it was when it first leaked to the Web. “Power” is one of the few previously released gems that the producer didn’t tweak for the album version. The record is unflinching, uncompromising, and undoubtedly ‘Ye’s mantra for more than just the current year. Illuminating Rhymes: “I just needed time alone with my own thoughts, got treasures in my mind/ But couldn’t open up my vaults … Reality is catching up with me/ Taking my inner child/ I’m fighting for custody.” 4. “All of the Lights (Interlude)”/ 5. “All of the Lights” A smattering of a song with upward of 10 additional singers, “All of the Lights” is as fearless a track as West has ever made. The rapper is hardly the most present vocalist on this percolating storytelling number, sharing the spotlight with Rihanna, among others. But as a producer he’s front and center — his orchestration is the driving force behind this sonic train. Illuminating Rhymes: “Restraining order, can’t see my daughter/ Her mother, brother, grandmother hate me in that order.” 6. “Monster” (featuring Rick Ross, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj and Bon Iver) A booming collaboration where each MC pushes the other beyond the brink of one-upmanship until Minaj obliterates the track with a hodgepodge of styling — from her flow to her vocal inflection and varied tonal cadences. Illuminating Rhymes: “Yeah, I’m in that Tonka the color of Willy Wonka/ You could be the king but watch the queen conquer.” 7. “So Appalled” (featuring Jay-Z, Pusha T, CyHi the Prynce, Swizz Beatz and the RZA) This all-star cipher is a backpackers dream as ‘Ye’s G.O.O.D. Music soldiers fire away with resolve. But the Brooklyn icon, Jay-Z, steals the show with an edgy verse dismissing his critics with a 16 that’s as pushy as a New Yorker during rush hour. Please, Hammer, stop replying. Illuminating Rhymes: “I’m so appalled, I might buy the mall/ Just to show niggas how much I have in store.” 8. “Runaway” (featuring Pusha T) The emotional centerpiece of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , “Runaway” gets a face-lift from the radio version with West returning the MP samples he blasted onto the track during his memorable 2010 MTV Video Music Awards performance. Pusha’s sneering guest spot remains the same, but in addition to the sampled tics that begin the track, the Clipse MC’s verse is sandwiched on the back end with an elongated outro. Illuminating Rhymes: “Never was much of a romantic, I could never take the intimacy/ And I know I did damage, ’cause the look in your eyes is killing me.” 10. “Hell of a Life” A brooding number with synth-heavy production and frenetic keys strokes. Here, West is all bravado in his hedonistic pursuits. Illuminating Rhymes: “One day I’m gonna marry a porn star/ We’ll have a big-ass crib and a long yard.” 11. “Blame Game” (featuring John Legend) The most melancholy track on the album, “Blame Game” finds West turning inward as he pensively dissects a deteriorating relationship — doling out blame between himself and his lady before ultimately assigning fault to their fading connection. Illuminating Rhymes: “I know that you were somewhere doing your thing/ And when the phone called, it just rang and rang/ You ain’t pick up but the phone accidentally called me back and I heard the whole thing.” 12. “Lost in the World” (featuring Bon Iver) / 13. “Who Will Survive in America” The denouement of Fantasy is a rollicking effort, thundering in its production and chock-full of proclamations from West that lead to more questions than answers after an hour of listening. The track caps off an exhilarating audio experience that’s sonically groundbreaking and lyrically thrilling. The final selection, a Gil Scott-Heron spoken-word excerpt, slowly punctuates the artful track with a stunning statement that seeks to leave West’s fantasy ride open for more life to be lived rather than bringing it to a conclusion. Illuminating Rhymes: “You’re my devil, you’re my angel/ You’re my heaven, you’re my hell/ You’re my now, you’re my forever/ You’re my freedom, you’re my jail/ You’re my lies, you’re my truth/ You’re my war, you’re my truce/ You’re my question, you’re my proof/ You’re my stress, you’re my masseuse.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Kanye West Related Photos Pop Culture References In Kanye West’s ‘Runaway’ Related Artists Kanye West

Do You Want A Real Revolution?

Once upon a time democracies worked fine for small tribes consisting of a number of families. Everyone simply got together and raised their hand to be counted. Easy. As populations grew, one could not hold massive public meetings for voting on every issue. So we developed a representative form of government, called a democratic republic. A person would be voted into office through democratic means and that person would cast a vote the Representative decided was best for their constituents. However, Republican government is not the friend of democracy and the freedoms of the people. In the course of time, as Representatives come and go, a Representative of the people will be corrupted by wealth and power offered to them by the wealthy and powerful. When that happens the people slowly loose their political power and everything degenerates once again into a have and have-not society of surfs and Aristocracy. Once upon a time, starting about two hundred years ago, we believed that was the best we could ever do and ever hope for. Today we have encryption technology. We have telephones and no pay phones that dial 911 without the need for money. We have computers, we have cell phones, we have TV and radio, newspapers, all of which informs us, all of which can be used in a system of voting. Grandma does not own a computer or TV. Grandma turns her newspaper to the Voting Pages where each bill in the state legislature and federal government is described and a pro and con opinion given, plus suggestions for further research. The deadline for the vote is given; say ten minutes before the representative casts their vote yes or no. Grandma picks up her phone, dials the voter number given for each bill, and uses her code or codes and votes. Tomorrow the newspaper will show the results and the voting record of the representative. In three days Grandma will receive a letter in the mail with her voter receipts, or she can opt for granddaughter to download her receipts off line and stay green. Grandma does a similar thing with her checks and bank transactions today. Every state has the option to pass laws making every representative in state legislatures, and in the federal government, subject to automatic recall by democratic process and a triggered recall when 10% of those representatives’ votes do not reflect the electronic democratic votes cast by the people, THE BOSS! A hearing is set and depending on state law, the representative will be subject to immediate dismissal or even criminal prosecution. Every state will be made accountable by responsible citizens on the local level, for setting up a system that is available to all eligible voters. In that way, cheating becomes a local issue forcing responsible citizens to get involved in the democratic process. Furthermore, it would force responsible citizens to get involved in politics at the state and federal level. Electronic Democracy evens the playing field between the average citizen that votes about every two years for a corrupt or corruptible representative, and the wealthy that can vote as many times as they like out of there wallets to corrupt that representative. I ask you, who really has more political power in the US today, when it is one-person one vote, and one wealthy person numerous votes? Be forewarned. The wealthy and powerful always bring out a BIG Scarecrow argument about democracies like those that I have described. They will say that crazy decisions are made by mobs of people with political power. They are correct if the average person ignores voting and let crazies run the government. However, that kind of mismanagement by the people is self-correcting. The moment some insane law is passed, the people will be forced to rise up and get involved. The more crazy laws pass, the more the rise of the people until real democracy and the power of the people is restored. In the United States, we believe in and trust the people to make the right decisions if they exercise their power to vote. That is based on a belief that human beings as a species have the ability to routinely make the correct political decision if they exercise their political power. This is the entire bases of Democracy. If it is a wrong assumption about us, then democracy for Homo Sapien is an impossibility. I for one do not believe that. However, let us put it to the test. We like to call the United States the great experiment in democracy. We can prove that the experiment is successful by using Electronic Democracy and forcing our elected representative employees to carry out the orders of their employers, the people of the United States of America. The best thing about Electronic Democracy exercised on a state-by-state bases, it is not unconstitutional. Note; lazy people can always vote in the general elections. I do not have the computer ability to start the process. But someone reading this does. Set up sites that take the votes of the people in each state, on every issue before state legislatures and our federal congress. Prove that it can work using encryption and technologies I do not understand but I am sure readers do. The revolution will be held on the internet, you are invited to join. The best way to prove this is the way to restore our freedoms and our democracy is to just do it independently. Then show the people that it works. Personally, I trust Al Gore and Current to make this happen. Maybe open a new tab and call it, Current the Democracy Project. But, if not, we can do it ourselves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izddjAp_N4I&feature=player_embedded# ! added by: ezrierin

‘If you touch my junk, I’ll have you arrested’ Flier becomes instant folk hero for refusing airport molestation

“I don't understand how a sexual assault can be made a condition of my flying,” said 31-year-old John Tyner to a pair of Transportation Security Administration officials insisting on giving him a “groin check” before boarding his plane. Tyner was scheduled to fly this weekend out of San Diego International Airport when he was pulled from the security line at the metal detectors and told he would be either subjected to one of the TSA's full-body scanners – which reveal a virtually nude image of passengers – or a full-body “pat-down,” including an inspection of his inner thigh. Discomforted by the invasive procedures and the thought of a security officer touching his genitals, Tyner made a joke that has since made him an instant Internet folk hero: “If you touch my junk, I'm gonna have you arrested'' Tyner's words have since resonated in dozens of online comments and thousands of views on YouTube, for the comment – and the controversial discussion that followed – was recorded by Tyner's cell phone. Though the phone was with his belongings, and thus only caught audio of his confrontation with TSA officials, the camera's footage is posted on a blog Tyner created detailing the incident and viewable below, with his “touch my junk” comment and ensuing confrontation beginning at roughly the 3:45 mark: For Tyner, however, his troubles had only begun when he threatened to have the TSA officer arrested. A female supervisor was called over to handle “issue,” and she promptly explained to Tyner that he had two choices: submit to the groin check or be escorted back out of the airport. “I don't understand how a sexual assault can be made a condition of my flying,” Tyner objected. “This is not considered a sexual assault,” the supervisor said. Tyner replied, “It would be if you weren't the government.” Sign onto the petition demanding the suspension of the privacy-invading scans and pat-downs. According to Tyner's account, he was eventually confronted by more senior TSA administrators and one San Diego police officer before being escorted back out of the security area to the ticket counter. To his amazement, American Airlines then refunded the price of his non-refundable ticket. Before he could leave the airport, however, Tyner says a TSA employees insisted that if he left the airport, he would be subject to a civil suit and a $10,000 fine. Nonetheless, Tyner left and then made his story public. His blog repeats the refrain, “I would not be groped.” Tyner also told his story to the San Diego Union-Tribune: “People generally are angry about what is going on,” said Tyner, “but they don't know how to assert their rights. … There is a general feeling that TSA is ineffective, out of control, over-reaching.” Though Tyner insists he's not trying to start a “movement,” he nonetheless told the newspaper, “It's time to stop treating passengers like criminals and start treating them as assets.” Earlier this week WND reported as dozens of other airline passengers shared their real-life horror stories of close encounters of the TSA kind, including a 70-year-old whose fudge “contraband” was discovered, a Los Angeles passenger who was “groped” four times and a man who was the target of a TSA screaming fit when he chose to opt-out of the “porno scan.” Just a day earlier, WND reported on the growing movement by activists and citizens to push back against Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano's plans for “enhanced” screening at airport checkpoints. A petition has been launched to tell President Obama, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano and members of Congress all about the problem. The petition targets the decision-makers in Washington who could bring the invasive procedures to a screeching halt. “We, the undersigned, call for the immediate suspension of the enhanced security screening procedures and an apology to the American public by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano for directing the implementation of this ill-advised program,” says the petition. Concerns over the invasion of privacy by TSA scanners, described as voyeurism by critics, along with the “molestation” of the associated “enhanced” pat-downs and the health concerns from the blasts of radiation have now reached a critical mass. As WND reported, groups have formed to organize passenger boycotts and prepare protests at airports, calling for a “National Opt-Out Day” on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The options now are to have a full-body scan that essentially produces a nude image of the passenger or opt out of that procedure and endure a full-hands-on body pat-down that includes private parts. added by: crystalman

Move Over Priest: Celebrity Preacher Eddie Long Faces Third Sex Abuse Claim

I spoke, personally, to a friend here in Atlanta that used to attend New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and grew up with Eddie Long in Baltimore, Maryland. He told that the inner circle of Long's entourage has always known about his passion and desire for young boys. One of the accusers was involved in a break in at the church last year. One of the things stolen was the Bishop's Iphone. The young man knew that the phone was the smoking gun because of the incriminating numbers and messages it carried. New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, with it's 30,000 members, has the largest African American congregation in the southeast region of the United States. I'm just not surprised. Don't ask me why, I'm just not. ___________________________________________________________ (Sept. 22) — A third lawsuit has been filed accusing Bishop Eddie Long of coercing young men in his Atlanta megachurch into having sex in exchange for cash and cars. The suit was filed today in DeKalb County Superior Court, in Georgia, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Earlier today, a spokesman for the pastor said the two other young men who have filed lawsuits against Long are out to stake their claim on his fortune and called the allegations baseless. The allegations against the leader of a 25,000-plus-member church are particularly explosive because of Long's outspoken views on homosexuality. The Southern Poverty Law Center calls the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church leader “one of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay movement” and noted that he has referred to homosexuality and lesbianism as “spiritual abortions.” In the lawsuit filed Tuesday in DeKalb County, Ga., the two men accuse Long of exploiting his influence to coerce the then-teenagers into sexual relationships with him for years. Johnny Nunez, Wire Image Two men have filed a lawsuit alleging Bishop Eddie Long, here in 2007, coerced them into sexual relationships when they were teenagers. The lawsuit says Long, 57, has a long pattern of “singling out a select group of young male church members” and using his influence to engage in “sexual acts and relationships for his own personal sexual gratification.” The suit says the pastor — leader of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in the Atlanta suburb of Lithonia — referred to the teenagers as “spiritual sons” and instructed them to follow their “master.” In exchange, they claim, Long introduced them to celebrities like film director Tyler Perry, according to The New York Times. Art Franklin told CNN the claims are nothing more than “a case of retaliation and a shakedown for money by men with some serious credibility issues” and are “definitely without merit.” Franklin noted that one of the accusers was arrested earlier this year and charged with breaking into the church's offices and stealing an iPad and an iPhone. The attorney for the men, Brenda Joy Bernstein, says the June 23 break-in was committed out of anger, when one of the plaintiffs discovered that Long had similar relationships with other young men in the congregation. “He lashed out,” Bernstein told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But if it weren't for that act, we wouldn't know about this. He talked to his friends and learned Long had other 'spiritual sons.'” But not all of the church's members see it that way. Samuel Midgette, 40, said he doesn't believe the allegations, in part because of often Long speaks about his wife in glowing terms. “A man who talks about his wife as much as he do…I can't see it. Unless I'm blind,” Midgette told AOL News today in a phone interview. He said the men making the claims are likely after Long's money. “People don't believe this,” he said. “I think this is all about money.” The lawsuit charges that the abuse began when one of the men was 16. According to the suit, Long put the teenager on the church's payroll, bought him a Chevy Malibu and took him on trips to Turks and Caicos, New York and New Zealand. In New Zealand, Long “regularly engaged in sexual touching and sexual acts” with the teenager, the lawsuit says. Long “categorically denies the allegations,” his attorney, Craig Gillen, told The Associated Press. “We find it unfortunate that these two young men would take this course of action.” Gillen did not immediately return a call to AOL News. Bernstein says church officials knew about the abuse and failed to stop it. “They would do everything to protect the most powerful church in the Southeast,” she told the Times. Long's church hosts a program titled “Out of the Wilderness” that claims to help cure its participants of homosexuality. In 2006, when the family of Martin Luther King Jr. chose New Birth Missionary Baptist Church as the location for Coretta Scott King's funeral, civil rights leader Julian Bond refused to attend. Bond said King's widow supported gay rights and never would have wanted to be in the presence of Long. “I knew her attitude toward gay and lesbian rights. And I just couldn't imagine that she'd want to be in that church with a minister who was a raving homophobe,” Bond told told AOL's Black Voices in 2006. “And I couldn't see myself in my church either.” added by: keithponder

CNN’s American Morning, Fixated on O’Donnell Charges, Played Down Biden’s Fine

At CNN, it’s all Christine O’Donnell all the time.  News readers there seemingly can’t get their fill of Delaware’s Republican senatorial candidate. Today, the American Morning program covered in each of its three hours allegations from a Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint that O’Donnell misused some campaign funds.  Yet when Vice President Joe Biden was fined $219,000 in July for actual FEC infractions, not allegations, American Morning didn’t devote anywhere near as much air time to the story. At 6:00 AM (ET), co-anchor John Roberts kicked off American morning with: “Checks and balances. Questions for the suddenly silent rising star of the Tea Party.  Where does Christine O’Donnell get her money? Is she using campaign cash as her personal credit card?”  Co-anchor Kiran Chetry chimed in with, “We’re going to have a lot more on Christine O’Donnell in just a few minutes.”  And they did, playing a clip of CNN national correspondent Gary Tuchman telling O’Donnell she didn’t answer his question as well as part of an interview with a woman representing the organization lodging the complaint.  Roberts noted that group claims O’Donnell is “clearly a criminal and should be prosecuted because of this spending.” After thanking viewers for watching and mentioning the transition from summer to fall, the 7:00 AM segment began: CHETRY: I’m Kiran Chetry. We have a lot to talk about this morning. We’re looking for answers from the tea party candidate for Senate in Delaware. Christine O’Donnell’s past spending raising some legal and ethical questions. We’re going to show you what the complaints are about, who’s behind them, and how she responded last night at a Delaware campaign forum. By the 8:00 AM segment, the team showed some self-restraint, waiting until about midway before: CHETRY: And Delaware GOP nominee Christine O’Donnell is denying she misused money from her last Senate run. She did though shy away from statistics when our Gary Tuchman caught up with her at a campaign forum last night. They then went to a video, afterwards noting that the “O’Donnell campaign has not responded to our phone calls this morning.” On July 19, the American Morning program reported on another story about the FEC looking into allegations of improprities.  It’s entire coverage: CHETRY: Well, his presidential bid failed. Now, Joe Biden will have to pay a $219,000 fine for violating campaign spending rules. The Federal Election Commission says Biden’s 2008 campaign accepted contributions above the legal limit. A Biden spokesman says that the ruling is, quote, “commonplace” and that a repayment check to the Treasury Department will be in the mail. And that, in total, was American Morning’s coverage that day of Biden’s $219,000 fine. The O’Donnell overkill must be obvious to even the Flavor Aid drinkers of the mainstream media.  Still, they just can’t get enough.  Even if it ultimately backfires as I think it may.

Facebook Is Secretly Building A Phone

Apple is doing it, Google is doing it, it was only a matter of time for facebook to get into the action. http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/19/facebook-is-secretly-building-a-phone/ -felipe “Facebook is building a mobile phone, says a source who has knowledge of the project. Or rather, they’re building the software for the phone and working with a third party to actually build the hardware. Which is exactly what Apple and everyone else does, too. It was a little less than a year ago that we broke the news that Google was working on a phone of its own – which was eventually revealed as the Nexus One. It was about that time, says out source, that Facebook first became concerned about the increasing power of the iPhone and Android platforms. And that awesome Facebook apps for those phones may not be enough to counter a long term competitive threat. Specifically, Facebook wants to integrate deeply into the contacts list and other core functions of the phone. It can only do that if it controls the operating system.” added by: donf3lipe
