Innocent Grandfather Gassed Himself Hours After Child Porn Police Raided His Home

A grandfather gassed himself just hours after child porn police raided his home – even though he was innocent. Last night his widow launched a bitter attack on the police after hearing at an inquest how detectives who seized his computers found nothing illegal. Michael Curtis's home was raided and three laptop computers seized after intelligence led officers to his address after he stumbled upon one indecent picture and viewed it for a matter of seconds. The inquest into his death heard that the 50-year-old amateur photographer gassed himself with fumes from his car just hours after police had executed a warrant at his home. Coroner Nicholas Gardiner was told Thames Valley Police would not have brought any charges against Mr Curtis after finding no evidence on his laptops. The investigation on July 28 was led by Interpol intelligence from Luxembourg after Mr Curtis innocently viewed the picture in March, 2009. His widow Ruth had told the inquest in Oxford: 'It doesn't matter what you write on the death certificate, I know you're going to write down he took his own life but he didn't. His life was taken that morning when those police officers arrived at the house.' The inquest was told that four officers turned up to Mr Curtis's house in Banbury, Oxfordshire, at 9am with a warrant under the Child Exploitation and Welfare Protection Act to seize his computers. Detective Sergeant Howard Berry told the coroner: 'There was no evidence but there was intelligence. Police in Luxembourg traced access to the website to the address. 'A picture had been viewed which was of an illegal nature. Intelligence came to police through international channels. Then there was a decision to investigate further and the warrant was issued.' Mrs Curtis, together with sons Simon and Paul and daughter Jennifer, said after the inquest: 'The police effectively took Mike's life. They may as well have shot him. 'The police when they turned up to the house treated him like he was guilty and treated him exactly like they would a convicted paedophile. 'I don't understand how accidently looking at one single picture for a matter of seconds in March 2009 has filtered down into an investigation in July 2010. 'They must have known he didn't look at any other pictures or visited any other website afterwards. Surely they can come to the conclusion he stumbled upon it? 'He would have been totally shocked by these claims. He would have been thinking about what people would think and what would he tell the people he worked for. 'I want people to know he is innocent and did not do anything wrong.' An hour after police had left the house, Mr Curtis drove to a DIY store and bought piping and wiring before returning home and locking himself in the garage, the inquest heard. Mrs Curtis discovered his body slumped in the driver's seat of his car after she had returned home from work. He had left a note on the passenger seat which read: 'Hi Ruth, sorry, time to go. Of course I love you, Simon, Paul, Jenny, Cerys and Owen. The police have taken the computers.' Mrs Curtis said he left bank account and shares details at the bottom of the note and signed it off with a sketch of the family. Coroner Nicholas Gardiner, recording a verdict of suicide, said: 'Whether or not the warrant was rightly issued is to be taken up elsewhere. Clearly it impacted on Mr Curtis and he had obviously spent time thinking about it and decided to take his own life, and that is how I have to record his death.' added by: toyotabedzrock

Anti-Gay Group Protests Local H.S. Play Dealing With Gay Prejudice

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Police were gearing up for drama both inside and outside Framingham High School Friday as a conservative religious group from Kansas protested the performance of a play dealing with gay prejudice. Officers closed off streets around the school and restricted parking around the campus complex as both groups squared off outside the school, carrying signs and singing. About five protesters from the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, which stages demonstrations outside military funerals and gay-rights events, brought its message to the school Friday morning. The group's leaders, holding signs that said “Thank God for dead soldiers,” said it is its sacred duty to warn others of God's anger over homosexuality, and its slogan is “God hates fags.” “This 'Laramie Project' is what brought us,” said Shirley Phelps-Roper while other group members sang a religious song, “This Little Light of Mine.” Wearing a hat that had the word “Obey” on it, she called the play a “tool that teaches children rebellion against God.” School bus loads of counter-protesters showed up, however, to sing their own songs. “We're all about love, that's pretty much it. Like, that's only promoting love. Not putting them down or anything. We even said 'We love you,' and they walked away,” said Ari Forrester. “I wanted to stand up and be counted on the side of tolerance and live and let live,” said counter protester Ed Herbert. The school's drama director said the play is not about what the group may think it's about. “The play does not promote homosexuality. The play is about a community healing from a hate crime. That's really what it's about, but that's not how they see it,” said Donna Wresinski. Some of the drama students said they've received more positive feedback about the play than negative. “I've got some negative stuff, but we've received so many letters from people that we don't even know, just being like, 'Congratulations on doing this play, this is so exciting. This is a great issue for you guys,'” said student Chloe Kounadis. She said some students are planning to hold a rally of their own to convey a positive message. “It's not about trying to shush them, it's about spreading our message, and our message is that love is louder than hate,” Kounadis said. The protest by the Kansas group was short. It is also planning protests at Harvard, Brandeis and at the Islamic Center of Boston. added by: TimALoftis

Leslie Nielsen: A Fan’s Appreciation

Read a tribute to the ‘Airplane!’ and ‘Naked Gun’ funnyman, who died Sunday at age 84. By Eric Ditzian Leslie Nielsen Photo: Paramount Pictures Owning a VHS tape of “Airplane!” was utterly pointless. The disaster-flick spoof played on what seemed like a near-constant basic-cable loop, available to feed the insatiable need for a first grader to hear Leslie Nielsen quip, yet again, that while everyone on his ill-fated flight was served steak or fish, he managed to dine on lasagna. But there was a certain comfort in knowing that I had access to the movie any time I needed a quick fix. And I needed it often. For me, there was simply nothing else like it. I didn’t know movies could do what “Airplane!” did. A glue-sniffing, pill-popping air-traffic controller? A little girl who takes her coffee black, just like her men? And what the heck was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar doing there? (For photos of the late funnyman throughout his career, click here.) “Airplane!” is a deeply strange movie, and its strangeness had the effect, even after countless viewings, of keeping the film endlessly surprising. How is that even possible? I knew every line and still it felt like anything could happen at any moment. It never got old. Nor did Nielsen, so it seemed. He remained almost unfairly frozen in time — with that same white helmet of hair, that same doughy-skinned face he sported in “Airplane!,” and then later in the “Naked Gun” trilogy. He was a man without a past. It would be decades before I learned of his previous work as a dramatic actor. I knew only what I saw on screen: one of the funniest damn people in the world. And so it was with great sadness that I read of Nielsen’s passing on Sunday at the age of 84. My first encounters with “Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad” were a shock to the system. My thinking went something like, “You mean to tell me there’s a funnier movie than ‘Airplane?’ ” As Lieutenant Frank Drebin, Nielsen just slayed me. The scenes where he crashes a major league baseball game, impersonating an opera singer named Enrico Pallazzo and then stepping into the role of call-botching home plate umpire remain some of the funniest stuff I’ve ever seen. At least that’s the way I remember it. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a “Naked Gun” flick. For that matter, “Airplane!” no longer seems to be on TV constantly. And where that original VHS tape is, I have no idea. But these are movies that are sewn into my pop culture DNA. There’s a certain comfort in that. ‘Ugly Betty’ Actor Michael Brea Charged With Murder

31-year-old accused of killing his mother with a sword in their Brooklyn, N.Y., apartment. By Eric Ditzian Michael Brea Photo: Michael Brea’s Facebook page Former “Ugly Betty” actor Michael Brea has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the death of his 55-year-old mother, according to multiple reports. The 31-year-old Brea stands accused of holding his mother hostage and then slaying her with a 3-foot-long sword. Citing police sources, the New York Daily News reports that Brea was convinced his mother was possessed by Satan and that he yelled such statements as “Sinner! Sinner!” and “You never accepted Jesus” as neighbors listened in horror early Tuesday morning. Neighbors in his Prospect Heights apartment eventually called the police. “I hear the brother chasing her [his mother] through the house and he’s just saying a bunch of [Bible] passages like ‘Repent, Repent, Repent,’ ” neighbor Gregory Clare told New York’s WPIX . “I heard him chasing her through the house and I hear a loud scream, and so I have my father call the cops, call 911.” Officers responding to the call reportedly encountered an extremely bloody scene and the butchered body of Brea’s mother. Brea himself was said to be clutching a bible and a sword (initial reports claimed it was a samurai sword, but the Daily News now says it was a Masonic ceremonial sword). The actor was aggressive and had to be Tasered before being placed on a stretcher and brought to Kings County Hospital for psychological evaluation. WPIX reports that neighbors described Brea and his mother as “quiet people,” and that Brea showed no previous indication of mental illness. The actor has had roles on “Ugly Betty” and, most recently, in this summer’s “Step Up 3D.”

The boy who was raised a girl

When anyone has a baby the first question everyone asks is: “Is it a boy or a girl?” Biologically it is sex hormones, physical appearance and the sex chromosomes – XX for a woman, XY for a man – which dictate whether someone is male or female. But what happens if you bring up someone who was a boy as a girl? There was a case just like this in the 1960s, a case which ended in tragedy. Twins Bruce and Brian Reimer were born in Canada as two perfectly normal boys. But after seven months, both were having difficulty urinating. Acting on advice, the parents, Janet and Ron, took the boys to the hospital for a circumcision. The next morning, they received a devastating phone call – Bruce had been involved in an accident. Doctors had used a cauterizing needle instead of a blade, and the electrical equipment had malfunctioned and the surge in current had completely burned off Bruce's penis. “I could not comprehend what he was talking about,” Janet Reimer remembered. “I thought they were going to use a knife. I didn't know there was electricity involved.” Brian's operation was cancelled, and the Reimers took their twins home. Ideal experiment Months passed, and they had no idea what to do until one evening they met a man who would change their lives, and the lives of their twins, forever. Dr John Money was a psychologist specialising in sex changes. He believed that it wasn't so much biology that determines whether we are male or female, but how we are raised. “We just happened to be watching TV,” remembers Mrs Reimer. “Dr Money was on there and he was very charismatic, he seemed highly intelligent and very confident of what he was saying.” Janet wrote to Dr Money, and within a few weeks she'd taken Bruce to see him in Baltimore. For Dr Money the case provided the ideal experiment. Here was a child he believed should be brought up as the opposite sex, who even brought his own control group with him – an identical twin. If it worked this would provide irrefutable evidence that nurture could over-ride biology – and Dr Money genuinely believed that Bruce had a better chance of living a happy life as a woman than as a man without a penis. Lonely girl And so, when Bruce was 17 months old, he became Brenda. Four months later, on 3 July 1967, the first surgical step was taken – with castration. Dr Money stressed that, if they wanted the sex change to work, the parents must never let Brenda or her twin brother know that she had been born a boy. From now on they had a daughter, and every year they would go and visit Dr Money who was keeping track of the twins' progress in what became known as the John/Joan case. Brenda's identity was kept a secret. “The mother stated her daughter was much neater than her brother and, in contrast with him, disliked to be dirty,” Dr Money recorded at one of these yearly meetings. Continue reading the main story “Start Quote She was very rebellious. She was very masculine, and I could not persuade her to do anything feminine. Brenda had almost no friends growing up. Everybody ridiculed her, called her cavewoman.” End Quote Janet Reimer * Listen to the full documentary Although, in contrast, he also noted: “The girl had many tomboy traits, such as abundant physical energy, a high level of activity, stubbornness, and being often the dominant one in a girl's group.” By 1975, the children were nine years old, and Dr Money published a paper detailing his observations. The experiment, he said, had been a total success. “No-one else knows that she is the child whose case they read of in the news media at the time of the accident. “Her behaviour is so normally that of an active little girl, and so clearly different by contrast from the boyish ways of her twin brother, that it offers nothing to stimulate one's conjectures.” Suicidal Yet by the time Brenda reached puberty at 13, she was feeling suicidal. “I could see that Brenda wasn't happy as a girl,” Janet recalled. “She was very rebellious. She was very masculine, and I could not persuade her to do anything feminine. Brenda had almost no friends growing up. Everybody ridiculed her, called her cavewoman. “She was a very lonely, lonely girl.” Faced with their daughter's sadness, Brenda's parents stopped taking her to see Dr Money. Soon after, they did the one thing Dr Money had warned them against: they told her she had been born a boy. Within weeks Brenda had chosen to become David. He had re-constructive surgery and eventually he even married. He couldn't have children himself, but he loved being a stepfather to his wife's three children. Yet what David did not know was that he had still been immortalised as 'John/Jane' in medical and academic papers about gender reassignment, and that the “success” of Dr Money's theory was affecting other patients with similar gender issues. “He had no way of knowing that his case had found its way into a wide array of medical and psychological textbooks that were now establishing the protocols for how to treat hermaphrodites and people who lose their penis,” said John Colapinto, a journalist for the New York Times who uncovered David's story. “He could hardly believe that this was out there as a successful case and that it was affecting others like him.” Depression Now well into his thirties, David had become depressed. He'd lost his job and he was separated from his wife. In the spring of 2002 his brother died from a drug overdose. Two years later on 4 May 2004, when David was 38, Janet and Ron had a visit from the police. David had committed suicide. “They asked us to sit down and they said they had some bad news, that David was dead. I just cried.” Cases like “John/Joan” – where an accident had taken place – are very rare. But there are still decisions being made about whether to bring children up as male or female if they suffer from what is called Disorders of Sex Development. “We now have well-functioning multi-disciplinary teams around the country so that the decision will be taken by a variety of professionals,” explained Polly Carmichael from Great Ormond Street Hospital. “The parents would be much more involved in terms of the decision making process. In her experience, these decisions have been successful in helping children to grow up to lead a happy and fulfilling life. “One of the wonderful thing about working with children and their families is that children are amazingly resilient. “With support, I'm constantly amazed at what children are able to take on and manage.” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11814300 added by: Dmerza1989

Women Gang Rape Schoolboy In Papua New Guinea

Mendi, Papua New Guinea (AHN) – Police are hunting 10 women who attacked a 17-year-old schoolboy with a knife and raped him in Papua New Guinea’s Southern Highlands province over the weekend. The incident happened on Friday outside the provincial capital of Mendi, according to provincial police chief Teddy Tei. The young victim went to a hospital for treatment after the attack, he said. Tei fears the boy has been infected with HIV by four of the women who raped him at knifepoint. HIV is the virus that causes acquired immune-deficiency syndrome or AIDS. There is a high incidence of HIV infection among women in the Pacific island country. Papua New Guinea also ranks among the top countries with the highest incidence of rapes, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Just last week, an Australian female tourist was raped by locals, who hijacked her car and robbed his three other companions in Madang province in the northwestern coast of the main island. The victims were taken to a secluded site and tied to trees. Read more: http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7020610214?Women20Rape%20Schoolb… added by: Radical_Centrist

Man Proves TSA Policies Are Unconstitutional

Blogger Matt Kernan was able to bypass both the naked body scanner and invasive TSA pat down procedures during his return to the United States this past weekend, proving that both measures are completely unconstitutional and creating a precedent for a total shake-up of airport security. Kernan, who documents the case on his website, was returning from a trip to Europe and was perturbed to see TSA workers making Americans who had already cleared security in their airport of origin go through backscatter x-ray machines and be groped simply to re-enter their own country. “You see, it is official TSA policy that people (both citizens and non-citizens alike) from international flights are screened as they enter the airport, despite the fact that they have already flown,” writes Kernan. “Even before the new controversial security measures were put in place, I found this practice annoying. But now, as I looked past the 25 people waiting to get into their own country, I saw it: the dreaded Backscatter imaging machine.” Having seen the plethora of cases in recent weeks of TSA thugs abusing and humiliating women and children, Kernan, who had no connecting flight and time to kill, decided to take a stand. So begins Kernan’s description of his 2 and a half hour debate with TSA officials and airport police after he refused to go through the naked scanner or be groped. After TSA workers laughed at Kernan for opting out of the radiation scanner, he politely informed them that if they touched his genitals he would consider it an assault. With TSA officials repeating “policy” like a broken record, Kernan stated, “I am aware that it is policy, but I disagree with the policy, and I think that it is unconstitutional. As a U.S. citizen, I have the right to move freely within my country as long as I can demonstrate proof of citizenship and have demonstrated no reasonable cause to be detained.” Soon after the TSA Supervisor, a Delta Airlines manager and the airport police were called and Kernan informed them that he was recording the audio of the exchange on his iPhone. “I will not do anything that is not explicitly stated on recording as mandatory,” Kernan told them, as the police suggested they conduct the pat down instead of the TSA. However, the cops were forced to back down when they refused to state on record that Kernan would have to have his genitals touched in order to be free to go. After a disagreement between the police and the TSA about who had jurisdiction to arrest Kernan, the police began to get frustrated with the TSA Supervisor for pawning off the responsibility on them. At this point, the Supervisor tried to involve the “Federal Security Director,” who was told that Kernan was being polite and citing his constitutional rights. After more deliberation, Kernan was eventually escorted out of the airport without having to go through a naked body scanner or have his genitals groped. “And then came the most ridiculous scene of which I’ve ever been a part. I gather my things – jacket, scarf, hat, briefcase, chocolates. We walk over to the staff entrance and he scans his badge to let me through. We walk down the long hallway that led back to the baggage claim area. We skip the escalators and moving walkways. As we walk, there are TSA officials stationed at apparent checkpoints along the route. As we pass them, they form part of the circle that is around me. By the end of the walk, I count 13 TSA officials and 2 uniformed police officers forming a circle around me. Man jailed for posting nude photo of his ex-girlfriend on Facebook

An “intense” boyfriend has been jailed for four months after posting a naked picture of his ex-girlfriend on Facebook.Joshua Ashby, 20, put the picture up in an “irresponsible, drunken, jealous rage” after the break-up of their five-month relationship, a judge said.In a legal first, the New Zealander was sentenced for a crime committed on the internet under morality and decency laws designed to cover printed media.Ashby pleaded guilty to distributing indecent matter and six others of threatening to kill, wilful damage, theft of a woman's clothes and assault. The Wellington court heard Ashby texted the messages, 'I'm going to kill you' and 'Dead bitch', to the unnamed woman in July.He then posted a photograph of her naked in front of a mirror on her Facebook page and made the picture available to all 500 million Facebook users worldwide and changed the woman’s password to stop her from being able to taking the photo off the website. It took the police and Facebook technicians 12 hours to shut the account down.Judge Andrew Becroft told Ashby he was adapting an old print law for the internet age.“Technology can't be used in this way,” the judge warned. “You would do incalculable damage to someone's reputation.” added by: sbacker
